Without getting into the whole Premiere pro vs Davinci comparison, a lot of the features you mentioned are in Premiere pro. There's pros and cons to using either or both.
Thank you for the insightful guide to DaVinci Resolve; it's been incredibly helpful for kick starting my video editing journey. Your clear instructions and tips have made the learning process much more accessible and enjoyable! Great j ob sir!
The one most important piece of advice I would give before buying the Studio version (which is very worth it) is, If you are looking at buying some hardware from Black Magic, wait and check because it might include a free Studio license. You could get a pocket camera, or a speed editor, and save some cash, since those come with the Studio license. If you aren't planning on getting anything from them, it's still well worth it to get Studio, any one of the features is probably a good enough justification.
Very informative. I'm thinking of upgrading to Studio, my free version works fine but I'm apprehensive in case I buy it, only to fine it requires a lot more computer power.
Thanks for the video Dunna! This is exactly what I needed. I have been with Premiere the last decade and finished a course in Resolve about a year ago but haven't jumped in fully. Edited my first RUclips short in Resolve last week (it was 4:2:2 10 bit footage) and it worked fine. I used the free version of Resolve and realized there is no auto transcriptions in the free version. I still pay for my full Creative Cloud suite because I use AE, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc so still on the fence whether to get the paid version of Resolve.
I filmed in a noisy nursery next to a busy road, and the footage was very loud, but once I used the voice isolation feature, you could hear me super clear and all the background noises disappeared like magic.
I’ve been using the free version on my iPad Pro for about a year now and I think it is that time to install Studio on my Mac with these features…thanks 👍🏽
Thanks Dunna for the wonderful and eye-opening video. One request. Since DaVinci Resolve is so resource hungry, could you please do a separate video on what could be the 'ideal' PC/Mac configuration for running Resolve? Thanks in advance.
i JUST started using davinci resolve but i’m really tempted to get it before it turns into a subscription (if it ever does). so far, i like davinci resolve and there’s a lot of things for me to learn!
Great summary. For me, HDR workflows is another key difference that may bring me over the fence into the purchased version, as well as better multi monitor support.
I recently purchased Sony A7C2 and unfortunately I cant import 10bit 4:2:2 videos on the free version. I'm already keen on purchasing the paid version and this further solidifies my decision. Great breakdown !
Tbh its quite good app. Only downside that is holding me back to fully switch from final cut pro to resolve is timeline scrobbling. U knoq u can hover ur mouse and u dont ever need to click to playhead to move on timeline. So for that reason, I'm currently editing my videos on fcp but if the video is long, i prefer to make an XML file then put it onto da vinci for export. For some reason i cant export videos longer than 15 hours on final cut pro woth .mov container. It exports as .mp4 tho but i need .mov so da vinci does that. But seeing auto captions and magic mask, it is insane to have em. No need for ae to rotoscope anymore. And that smart reframe. Idk how well its gonna work for my content but ima try it and see. Cos my shorts are waay to complex to edit. Cos sometimes theres 2 talking heads and i like to fit em at that moment where they talk etc in a single shot so definitely smart reframe cant do this. So im doin manually in fcp and im gettin better evry day but ima try it in resolve to see how its gonna work. Great video btw.
Only buy studio if you are highly committed and taking video editing as a Top Hobby/Career. If you just a Casual RUclips content creator just making videos for fun, Studio isn’t necessary, but you can get it if you want.
A software company supporting a reasonably priced in-route to amature creatures is a huge value for me. Adobe will never get my money. I don't even mind if I stop getting new updates at some point. A perpetual license of something this powerful is a huge value.
Great Video Dunna. 🔥🔥🔥 The free version is good for folks to get started, break into Davinci and see if Resolve works for them. But Studio is obviously the way to go on all levels once an editor gets acquainted. If anyone is going to do some real editing, color grading....etc Studio is a must.
I just upgraded to the Studio version of Resolve even though I'am still a novice in terms of video production and editing. I'am happy to support any company that has a one of payment plan. I refuse to pay via the subscription model and have been using open source based software as a result for alot of the software I use. I think because Black Magic Design is primarily a video hardware company maybe the reason they can use the one time purchase model for Resolve.
Does Davinci Resolve Studio have an auto edit feature like the GoPro app? Gopro app's AI auto cuts, adds transitions between clips/scenes, and free music and makes a 2-3 minute video. And it does a really good job.
I went straight in with studio and while my Mac does struggle with some things (magic mask) it gets the job done eventually! Don’t regret it at all! I do regret the £100s of plugins I bought for FCPX though 😢
I have a Lumix S5 and used to use the free version. I could edit my 10bit footage then using my M1 Mac mini. What I heard from others is that blackmagic capped some computers and laptops to 8bit editing for the free version, but not really sure though. And from what I’ve heard is that the sure thing is that even if some laptops or computers can access 10bit files in the free version, it cannot export 10bit files. So to be sure, if you want to use 10bit files and export 10bit files, you need the studio version.
I picked up the speed editor hardware tool which comes with the software license for the paid version of davinci resolve. $400 vs $300 for the software alone. So basically, you get a hardware device for $100 with some useful shortcut buttons and a super useful wheel on it.
I've been using resolve free for about two years before switching to studio and I honestly feel like the free version, if your just a normal editor, is fine. But if you want to push your content, UPGRADE! Its 200% worth it!
depends on who you are, most people will find the free version gets them most of the way there. In the end I only really benefit from the 10bit colour managing and that's only if you want to colour. Genuinely sucha good piece of software to learn on before jumping up to more professional editing or colour programs (Film light or AVID)
Remember, resolve is meant to be a cinema grade editing software, so the studio features are essential for Hollywood producers. However, if you're just making silly youtube videos, the free version works fine enough
I've been using premiere since the beginning of my video hobby. About a year ago it updated and now doesn't recognize media encoder even though everything is up to date. Which means I can no longer make proxies and I have to export each video one at a time instead of editing a bunch and having them all export at the same time while I sleep. I was already on the fence and leaning towards DaVinci resolve but you've just convinced me. I'm going to open up all my recent projects and finish them as quickly as possible so I can start fresh on a new project with Resolve 🤘
Love your channel Dunna! I've been using the free version for the last year and a bit, and this has finally convinced me to pull the trigger on the studio version. Do you have a BlackMagic affiliate link? Would love to support the channel and purchase it through an affiliate link, since this is what convinced me! Keep up the great work!
I switch in December to STUDIO - and the firts WOW - was, that the studio version use my fulll GPU power - so now I render 2 minutes instead of 20! That also a BIG feature that not so many free version users know.
As a penny pinching reluctant Studio user: My favorite studio feature is two screen editing. Magic mask was a huge disappointment. I found I could get better separation with the more cumbersome free tools. I REALLY NEED to look into editing via transcript!
i use capcut to make edits but i was limited due to the fact capcut was new and was missing features, i wanted to use aftereffects but it was way too big of a jump for me since capcut is one of the simplest editing softwares and after effects is one of the most complicated, i was looking for a way to have the simplicity of capcut but with the features after effects has... and then i found davinci resovle god i love this
The studio version of DaVinci Resolve is not available to buy in all around the world (It exists only in 60 countries) and I reached the support to ask them if I could buy a UK or US serial key they tell the key wouldn't work cause my country is not supported. The Blackmagic company's focus is on selling cameras and other items, not the software. The opposite of Adobe software that you can buy in whatever place you are in (195 countries)
Coming from Adobe's hell, I think I'll keep the free version for now, mainly due to my easy edits and my 8 bit camera. I do plan to upgrade just to support a company that cares about its customers
10 bit that opens are ProRes versions, some H.265 -it’s a trail and error, DnxHR HQx (actually 12-bit). I haven’t got any H264 10bit files to work in resolve.
What's amazing is that buying Studio is a fraction of the cost of buying your camera hardware. :-) And the reason there is a free version and the pad version is a one-time purchase is probably because BlackMagic Design make most of their money selling hardware!
It’s worth it but all I’m saying is magic bullet has halotion just film stocks etc but I just figured out why that ain’t footage was tripping when I was editing it
If you're a windows user this is an absolutely mandatory upgrade, without it you are unable to use hardware decoders and encoders of your computer, meaning video playback will be choppy even on high end systems.
Used to LOVE and always use FCP7... Moved on from that, didn't edit anymore lol.. Then tried newer versions of FCP, hated it.. Premiere dropped, got on that, junior-editors on that, LOVE it.. But NOT loving the subscription anymore lol. Got on Capcut while traveling, pretty easy and fluid... Now about to get on Resolve for the end all be all lol.
Just bought the Studio version... What I noticed is that my Free version was very slow.. with the studio version everything seems so fluid and faster... I don't know how true this is but that's just what I noticed
I personally love using davinci resolve for the fact that i can use it on linux unlike filmora with windows or whatever apple uses. Davinci is available for all!
Great video. As a cruise vlogger I started editing with filmora but am seeing lots of issues with various elements. Has anyone used this and moved to Davinci and how difficult was the transition? Thanks in advance.
Great Video! one of the biggest setbacks for me though is the way Resolve organizes my projects. Is there a way to save a project as its own file instead of me having to access it through the app itself? similar to adobe's workflow where I can access and save my project file within any specific project folder i want to.
It took me 5 years before I finally sucked it up and upgrade to Studio. 3 of those years I had a computer that would've been able to handle the extra grading features, fusion effects, and benefit from hardware acceleration. It's been a year since the upgrade and I'm still seriously pissed at myself for not upgrading sooner.
I paused the video at the before/after noise reduction. I prefer the before actually. Your beard looks much more clear, whereas the after looks blurry. But I do love the magic mask and that tempts me to buy it. But I just Got fired so I dont have the money :(
So as far as I know, with Studio you still cant really move around your workspace like in Premiere? For me thats a dealbreaker and I would probably go back to Premiere for it. Especially working with more screens makes Davinci (at least the free version) sometimes insufferable.
Hi Dunna, Just wondering how you do your videos when using both 360 camera and a normal camera, do you use a multiple time lines, maybe one for each then bring them together?. Maybe would make a good video many thanks
Worth it just for supporting a company who didn't jump on the stupid subscription train!

After watching this video, I went ahead and upgraded to the full version. Thx for the info.
Interesting that you were able to do 10 bit footage on the free version! You’re one of the lucky ones I guess haha! Glad you liked the video though!!
@@dunnadidit I guess so! 🙃
Voice isolation is a available in Lumafusion on ipad
Great summary. For me, HDR workflows is another key difference that may bring me over the fence into the purchased version, as well as better multi monitor support.
I recently purchased Sony A7C2 and unfortunately I cant import 10bit 4:2:2 videos on the free version. I'm already keen on purchasing the paid version and this further solidifies my decision. Great breakdown !
The license also comes with any pro Blackmagic camera / select gear
Absolutely!
Purchasing a Speed Editor and getting the Studio version is a no-brainer.
Heck yeah!
Nice! Sucks about the plugins tho! Hopefully you still have everything you need in DVR
I upgraded to the studio version and it was the best thing i ever did.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the community 🙏🏻
Does the paid version provide subtiles in other languages ?
I picked up the speed editor hardware tool which comes with the software license for the paid version of davinci resolve. $400 vs $300 for the software alone. So basically, you get a hardware device for $100 with some useful shortcut buttons and a super useful wheel on it.
Man I just want that Auto Masking Feature for FCPX lol......Hard for me to move away from FCPX, I have so many plugins and titles!! Great breakdown!
Haha I’m over here trying to entice you 😜
I've been using resolve free for about two years before switching to studio and I honestly feel like the free version, if your just a normal editor, is fine. But if you want to push your content, UPGRADE! Its 200% worth it!
Bam bam! This is exactly it!
Love the noise reduction and voice isolation, has saved my ass a few times. Thanks for the vids you do.
VI is not stable and prone to mess up your edits.
depends on who you are, most people will find the free version gets them most of the way there.
Hi! Great content as always.
Can you make something regarding removing objects and dust on the lens. Thank you
I’ll definitely keep it in mind! Dust on the sensor is a tough one in video!
@@dunnadidit I did see a video before where they used a similar method that’s used in photoshop
ESPECIALLY since you OWN IT when you buy it.
Great Video Dunna! Love resolve studio. 10/10 would recommend!
Thanks dude!
Love your channel Dunna! I've been using the free version for the last year and a bit, and this has finally convinced me to pull the trigger on the studio version.
Do you have a BlackMagic affiliate link? Would love to support the channel and purchase it through an affiliate link, since this is what convinced me!
Keep up the great work!
loved this video! I can't wait to get the studio version.
I switch in December to STUDIO - and the firts WOW - was, that the studio version use my fulll GPU power - so now I render 2 minutes instead of 20! That also a BIG feature that not so many free version users know.
I am very close to making the jump! Thanks for the video
As a penny pinching reluctant Studio user:
My favorite studio feature is two screen editing.
Magic mask was a huge disappointment. I found I could get better separation with the more cumbersome free tools.
I REALLY NEED to look into editing via transcript!
i use capcut to make edits but i was limited due to the fact capcut was new and was missing features, i wanted to use aftereffects but it was way too big of a jump for me since capcut is one of the simplest editing softwares and after effects is one of the most complicated, i was looking for a way to have the simplicity of capcut but with the features after effects has... and then i found davinci resovle god i love this
Gald you're back! welcome in 2024
First video of the year and we’re off to the races! Happy new year!
The studio version of DaVinci Resolve is not available to buy in all around the world (It exists only in 60 countries)
and I reached the support to ask them if I could buy a UK or US serial key they tell the key wouldn't work cause my country is not supported.
Amazing video bro. Very clear and direct. Love that
Paid version enables GPU acceleration for effects. Insane fast on a good GPU
10 bit that opens are ProRes versions, some H.265 -it’s a trail and error, DnxHR HQx (actually 12-bit). I haven’t got any H264 10bit files to work in resolve.
Sold!
yo is that vortrox??
What's amazing is that buying Studio is a fraction of the cost of buying your camera hardware. :-)
And the reason there is a free version and the pad version is a one-time purchase is probably because BlackMagic Design make most of their money selling hardware!
Same man just bought up new gaming laptop to start editing and still feels choppy to use in RTX 4050
What would be the better ecosystem for desktop and iPad editing? I mainly use FCPX at home, but I really like Davinci's iPad app thats free.
how much is the full paid version these days ?
495 bucks onnnnnlllllyyyyyy
@@ashishbehal6818 I checked it last year,i think the 18 and was on sale for $299.Quite a jump.Thanx anyway.
Great video. I also went from free to Studio. I think it is actually cheap vs what you get.
Great video. Thank you for making this. 🙂
I needed this video bad bad thank you sir
My pleasure!! Thanks for watching!
Unfortunately, I have no money.
You are not alone lol
Great video. As a cruise vlogger I started editing with filmora but am seeing lots of issues with various elements. Has anyone used this and moved to Davinci and how difficult was the transition? Thanks in advance.
Great Video! one of the biggest setbacks for me though is the way Resolve organizes my projects. Is there a way to save a project as its own file instead of me having to access it through the app itself? similar to adobe's workflow where I can access and save my project file within any specific project folder i want to.
Loved this video! Thank you.
But I just Got fired so I dont have the money :(
Thank you for helping me make my decision. One question tho: Do gou think it's worth it to buy the bumdle worh the speed editor?
Would love to upgrade... just the cost. Any deals or codes going around? Thx
You have a video on color grading where you said you were using the free version for just over a month... Where did this 3 days thing come from?
So as far as I know, with Studio you still cant really move around your workspace like in Premiere? For me thats a dealbreaker and I would probably go back to Premiere for it. Especially working with more screens makes Davinci (at least the free version) sometimes insufferable.
Hi Dunna, Just wondering how you do your videos when using both 360 camera and a normal camera, do you use a multiple time lines, maybe one for each then bring them together?.
Maybe would make a good video
many thanks
