This is why covering legends is a good thing. I've heard the "ghost" version, didn't know it was a cover, found out about Roky whom I've never heard of....but have now and here we are...
This song is a great expression of hallucinations schizophrenia can cause. Roky battled schizophrenia from his early 20s. Rest in peace Roky, thank you for the music
This is so funky and amazing, then Tobias's version is haunting and devastating; the juxtaposition between the groove of the melody and the sadness of the lyrics is one of my favorite things in music. Thank you Ghost for introducing me to this. rip Roky 🙏🏻
The Evil One is one of the great albums. The empathy this man had, his story is unmatched. A gentle but disturbed soul who eventually took his life back from forces against him.
The way he lets the lyrics just pour out like a stream of consciousness actually make it sound like him and his ghost are talking back and forth at the same time through the same mouth.
Came from a Ghost BC playlist, they’re both good but hearing how cool this one is amazing and reading a comment where he has schizophrenia makes this make more sense with the “If you have ghosts” and the Ghosts being Hallucinations makes the song more interesting and cool:)
Both versions are great in their own way. And Roky is the one who actually made the song in the first place, so massive respect to him. A beautiful Texas man as Copia likes to put it.
Its weird that the metal band did the slower version. Then again, you can't get more metal than the original schizophrenic ramblings and shredding guitar of Roky.
Ghost got me here. I love how Ghost didn't just copy it, they made it their own. Apart from the lyrics, the two songs sound completely different. Love both versions, both deserve as much love as each other.
Instead of being a snob about it, why not embrace a new generation who are rejecting the shit radio and TV are ramming down their throats and discovering great music like this....they are the future of rock, without them rock will die.
Holy shit this is awesome! As with many others I came here because of Ghost and I never would have imagined the original was so southern rock. I love both versions!!!
A cover is a cover. I doubt ghost considers their version better (in any capacity) than Roky's. The brain that created the damn song is the brain that should get the praise
I love Roky, absolute gold dust! Fantastic song, fantastic person.... I heard of Roky through ghost. another amazing seriously talented song writer who should have had more exposure! Roky if you can hear me, thank you :)
I only like the key in the Ghost version of this song better.....beyond that, both version of this song is amazing in it's own way....Thanks Ghost for introducing me to Roky Erickson
here here, Ghost's version is beautiful and melodic, this is eratic and soulful. both versions kick much ass. and remember everyone, Ghost wouldn't have been able to make one of the best songs I have ever heard without Mr. Erickson. My hats off to him!
Love me some Roky!!!!!!!!!!! Discovered his music in Austin in 90s. A few years ago I had a spontaneous spiritual awakening and I think I discovered the real meaning of the song.
Such an amazing talent, and such a tragic story. Watch the documentary about his life "You're Gonna Miss Me" it's unbelievable that he was able to put out so much good music in his condition.
Somewhere and when, Frank Zappa did not approve of Roky throwing beer bottles during a sound session. Most of the archived strange is gone or spread thin.
Every one of my sensibilities is rattled. This musician rejuvenated my love of both "outsider" rock and psychedelic rock. I Think of Demons, Goodbye Sweet Dreams, Haunt, Night of the Vampire, A Cold Night for Alligators...the entire 13th floor library...very saddened. Roky was one of my 5 favorite artists, with Daniel Johnston, Tom Waits, and the late Warren Zevon and Johnny Cash. RIP You Don't Love Me Yet...well, yes, I do, and I'll never stop. None of us will ever stop.
I first heard of Roky in 1985, while watching Return of the Living Dead. His song "Burn the Flames" featured in a crematorium scene. That song was amazing. A few years later I heard Two Headed Dog, and I was hooked. I never knew of "If you have Ghosts" until Ghost preformed it. Didn't know until today, 3 years later that Roky had passed. I must say, Ghost certainly pays tribute to him in their rendition. A cover version that compliments the original by being it's own thing. RIP. Roky.
God damn that's some cool guitar work. Wasn't sure at first, took a while to get into the rhythm mostly because I'm so used to the Ghost cover, but there is some really fucking cool stuff here!

Originally from Houston Texas, we all knew who Roky Ericson was. He had a pretty sad story. Lots of mental health issues that were made worse by his use of psychedelic drugs. There's a great tribute album WHERE THE PYRAMID MEETS THE EYE that came out around 90 or 91. John Wesley Harding did a cover of IF YOU HAVE GHOSTS which is my personal favorite. The tribute album is packed with great covers by many Texas bands, ZZ Top, Butthole Surfers, etc... such a talented guy. Sadly, Texas lost him not too long ago. I believe this song my best capture what he had going on in his head.
This is why covering legends is a good thing. I've heard the "ghost" version, didn't know it was a cover, found out about Roky whom I've never heard of....but have now and here we are...

Good comparative analysis of the two versions. The lyrics are a bit of an enigma, but I guess that's one of the reasons I find the song so intriguing.
@@keithbarlow9701 Most likely a song about his mental illness

If you have Roky or GHOST , you have EVERYTHING,
