His wife Nana told me that she complained that he never wrote anything about her, so he went into bedroom and ten minutes later he came beck with “Starry eyes”.
Thank you for writing this masterpiece, you legend. The version by Cigarettes After Sex has remained my all time favourite song for years now. I know it wouldn't have been possible if you hadn't written this song all those years ago. I come back and listen to the original from time to time, and it brings a smile to my face.
I always listen to two versions of this song... its too short to listen just once considering how it feels. Strange combo of happy and sad. Melancholy nostalgia perhaps. Somehow, no matter what Roky sings, I always feel it like hell. The mans transcendent. We may all be insane, but in our insanity there is truth. In periods of insanity, the truth is hidden, but when you're on the mountain looking over the clouds at all your cards with the mind for it, you see what insanity means. Love you Roky. Never apologize for who you are, never wish to be anyone else, though know we all do. You're a gift to the world, man. You touch so many hearts and have one of the truest and most honest and compassionate voices in music. WE LOVE YOU! KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD! KEEP IT ALL WEIRD! KEEP YOURSELVES WEIRD!
I know this song doesn’t fit his creepy image but it’s a testament to his talent. I love this song just as I love Night Of The Vampire or any of his other horror themed songs. Long live Roky! I do miss you now that you’re gone.
The goofy actor rocker Jack Black should do a movie portraying as Roky Erickson! Black could pass as looking like Roky! Long hair, beard and a guitar, you'll have Roky! Some one oughta tell this to Jack Black...
Rip brother Roky I was just playing this on my Road Glide today as loud as I could. I just found out you past tonight. Keep playing these good tunes in the sky. I will def keep you alive down here brother 😎
Roky and the 13th Floor Elevators busted through the stodgy and overly produced music of the 60's with Austin's answer to the SF becoming-enlightened psychedelic scene, bringing a deep Americana sensibility via his intuitive lyricism, the trippy amplified jug vibrato and Roky's daring and sometimes terrifying, sometimes heart-breaking vocals as in "Starry Eyes". I am grateful to have spent some precious moments with you after a fine gig in Orange County, capping my love for your genius since I was a teenager in the 60's. We will catch up to you in the great cosmic afterlife Roky. Jam on brother.
Every one of my sensibilities is rattled. This musician rejuvenated my love of both "outsider" rock and psychedelic rock. I Think of Demons, Goodbye Sweet Dreams, Haunt, Night of the Vampire, A Cold Night for Alligators...the entire 13th floor library...very saddened. Roky was one of my 5 favorite artists, with Daniel Johnston, Tom Waits, and the late Warren Zevon and Johnny Cash. RIP You Don't Love Me Yet...well, yes, I do, and I'll never stop. None of us will ever stop.
i took a picture of my ex-gf once while she watched fireworks over south padre island. she was so beautiful as she gazed upon. i called that picture starry eyes,
For me, this is Roky's most beautiful song, esp first version. Just a testament to the power of true love, and wonderful music to boot. Singlehandedly rejuvenated my spirit, in a way only a few songs in my lifetime have. So creative and focused. RIP Roky, hope you are at peace jamming in heaven 😮💨

You really are a star now Roky. Shining and eternal. Rest in Poetry.

R.I.P Roky. We love you brother. Thanks for the memories. You changed my life.

One of the most underrated artists imo.
Gutted man. Your music
One of the best song writers of all time! This one hurts.

One of the top ten best songs ever written. Roky is a true genius.
A lot of people and other musicians helped this man keep his music alive for the ages.
I always come back to this song, it's been with me since my school years. I love it, i love you... R.I.P Roky.
