    This was a super interesting story. I hope that the uncle who was excited to possibly be his dad stayed in touch. Having an awesome uncle can be great. My dad was adopted and we don't know who his father was. He passed away last year. If i wanted to try and find out who my biological grandpa is would the best way be a y chromosome test on my first cousin (my dad's twin sisters son) he's the only male in the family.

      Unfortunately your dads twin sister will not have yDNA from their father but autosomal testing should help!

    I was very moved by his video. I have a very good genealogical tree going into the 1500s but I did not get along with my father who died about five weeks ago. Except for gaining a few Momentos of him, he has been a shadowy figure in my life even though I lived under his roof the first 18 years. I wanted very little to do with him when I was going to college and graduate school and into my adult years and he didn’t seem to change a lot when I got older. His maniacal ways probably prevented me from having a normal life I could marry and have kids and that has been my biggest anger against him. So I think maybe even having a father only through Genealogical records is better than having a father that you just never got along with

    That's a terrible disappointment. He knows 100% that the guy was his dad but that guy wouldn't acknowledge it. Glad he was able to befriend the one half brother and hopefully it lasts.

    To be fair to Long Lost Families, the British version, they do report the stories that don't turn out happily too, sometimes the person has died or wants no contact, often the happy ending is a half sibling rather than the parent they were hoping for, just like here. Sometimes it's pretty clear there will be troubles ahead, some of the review shows tell that directly. Obviously though it's public and there will be some stories we never see because participants pull out, or they just don't find people at all.

    What a touching story.
    As someone with a half brother I’ve never met I understand the desire or curiosity to meet someone I know I share a parent with but I also understand why some people don’t want to know or why sometimes it’s just better not to rock the boat.
    My mother would never have forgiven me if I’d tried to find my half brother when she was alive. Although my father had him before they married he never let on so when my half bro appeared with his mother at my parents’ business when my mum was quite ill and my dad didn’t say anything my mum never forgave him. Both my parents have now passed. I no longer wish to find my half brother.
    Love your videos Jared.

    There's a huge difference between biological father (or mother) and "Dad" (or "Mom"). If people don't make that distinction on the search, they are probably setting themselves up for a HUGE disappointment. They can (and IMO should) know the facts of their conception. But if they missed out on the bonding and care from bio-parent(s), that needs a different kind of attention from qualified folks.

    Yeah,after finding the biodads for myself and my maternal half-sis, I have really enjoyed helping others!.
    Even if only saying it has to be one of these two sisters, or only saying I don't know who your father is, but your paternal grandparents and Joe Smith and Jane Doe, it is a joy.
    The one I love the best is when I had a match in her 20s and she was really concerned that her dad was not her dad.....
    We only matched at about 80 Cms. But I was able to prove through segment data that the largest 2 segments we shared were definitely Workman segments. Her dad was her dad!!
    He also sent me a thank you message....
    That was my most heartwarming find!

    My heat breaks for him. I went through a similar deal taking my DNA test. I was disowned when my biological mom reached out to me and wanted to meet me. I did a DNA test after she passed and found that I am a child of an NPE. The three possibles for my dad have passed away and only one has a child.

    What a genuine and warm man. I wonder what's stopping his biological family from accepting him? Religion, money, shame?

  • @Chaotic_Pixie
    @Chaotic_Pixie Год назад +7

    It really sucks that certain members are rejecting him. I hope the uncle is willing to continue being an uncle & it is nice that he at least has contact with one of his brothers. That's the biggest thing I hear from DCPs (donor conceived persons), adoptees, and those who have had 1 or both parents removed from their life... it's that they have no access to half (or more) of their medical history. I certainly hope he and his family never have need of knowing family medical history & they remain healthy, but not having that & needing it can be so truly devastating. I also can't help but wonder if maybe bio dad & his wife were together way back then & that's playing a role in why he's denying paternity. Family dynamics are so complex.

    • @Chaotic_Pixie
      @Chaotic_Pixie Год назад

      Side Note: Do you think you might do an episode about best ways to go about DNA testing if you're a DCP or maybe collab with someone who is in the DCP community? I've been consuming a lot of Laurahigh5 content on TT (a DCP herself & an advocate) and I figure since you do talk a lot about adoptees & NPEs, maybe the discussion could expand to include DCPs? They're kind of the intersection of both of those scenarios.

    • @ProfessionalGenealogistReacts
      @ProfessionalGenealogistReacts  Год назад +2

      That is certainly a possibility! During one of the GRIPitt courses I took I sat next to someone who was DCP and specialized in assisting others with that as well. I might message her to see if she would be interested in doing a video about that.

    My adopted mom had a very similar situation, where her biological mom gave the name of the wrong biological father. I had a whole tree for this man, but DNA showed no one with that surname. I was able to narrow it down to 3 brothers that lived 2 streets away from moms biological mother, via DNA. haha

  • @michaelrochester48
    @michaelrochester48 Год назад +4

    Jarrett… I have taken a Y DNA test and none of them have my surname but there’s no real consensus on names, about half of them say Millbourne, some say Thompson, and a small sprinkling of different surnames. Which leads me to believe that I may not necessarily have a non-marital break. It may mean that just not enough people with my last name took the test and the ones who did were of the last names mentioned. Regular DNA testing shows me to be a descendent of the original settler on Prince Edward Island with my last name. So at least up to the immigrant who is born in the mid-1700s it’s probably is my last name. But solidly I’ve been able to trace into the 1600s this last name with very little break although the name Milbourne does show up in Northumberland

  • @torstenheling3830

    I liked this fellow‘s story, but I found it a bit confusing at first. He never mentions that his bio-dad had any sons, but goes on to speak about how he has gotten to know his „brothers“ (half-brothers actually) and I thought he was confusing them with his uncles (the one in particular who tested). Now, I see his „brothers“ are the sons of the man he’s determined to be his bio-dad, his half- brothers in reality. He should convince at least one of them to test just to 100% guarantee that his bio-dad is in fact his bio-dad, as gene-vlogger points out, even though I agree he’s pinned it down with about 99.5% certainty.

    I think it’s a huge embarrassment to some people and in my grand father’s case I knew he had been put up for adoption and he had trouble getting a birth certificate. It was a birth out of wedlock. I also have a great aunt that allegedly had a son in her late Sixties. Wink wink. The daughter wasn’t married the kid was sort of ostracized. I didn’t know about it until a couple years ago a counting contacted me. No matter how embarrassing it was fortunate for me that it happened.
