When people don't understand, they fill in the blanks with cultural norms and assumptions. And since that's quite a maze of mental karate in itself, plus the required reading needed to even begin to sort of comprehend Ancestry in the context of DNA, ignorance seems to take the day, much of the time. Great video!

Honestly, a 10min tutorial video with DNA websites that quickly run thru things could reduce these ridiculous misinterpretations.
if he's still active on YT... I'd actually love to see him have his tree built out... especially if his gran is still alive & if she wants to be involved.

He absolutely has an African Ancestor, it is impossible for it to show that high a portion of West African ancestry and it be from some "carry over" from some other distant ethnicity or just random distant carry down through many generations. before Chromosomes are passed into human Sperm and Egg cells, they go through genetic recombination, zipped and unzipped and zipp and unzipped. This recombination occurs in random amounts, in random places, but it inevitable happens in some amount across the entire chromosome. over many generations dna gets blended. The reference data the companies use are the current modern status of ethnicities DNA, which means you cannot have a large confident block of DNA linked to that ethnicity without it coming from recent links to the same origin population of the modern refence data group. He absolutely has a west African ancestor at a distance similar to what Jarrett suggests. Since he his British it is probably from one of the limited number of Enslaved people brought directly into England, or possibly from an American ancestor whom was awarded freedom and protection by the British around the time of the Revolutionary war. Many African Americans saw England's abolition of slavery as an invitation to find their way into British places, so there are many options as to how they could have done so.

That 1.8% West African might also come through one of his Southern European ancestors, like an Iberian one, who may have had some West African in *their* background.

Iberians don’t have much of a genetic/historical connection to West Africa though. They do have a considerable amount of North African DNA because of the Arabs (especially Southern Iberia), but the only contact they had with West Africa comes from the very few colonies they had there. Britain and especially France had a lot more colonies in West Africa so if I had to guess i’d say his West African dna comes from Nigeria, from the British side of his family.

The UK had docks where for centuries foreign seaman would land and live around. Some of these seamen had relationships with British women. In addition there were black slaves in the UK some of whom ended up marrying into the rest of the British population. People mistakenly claim that slavery was illegal in the UK but RUclipsr J Draper, a historian, has explained why this is not so.

Good to see another video from you. I hope one day Dan looks deeper into his family tree to seek out that west African ancestor and makes a video about it. Or better yet, that he hires you to be on your RUclipsr series! I think the reason RUclipsrs don’t show their matches is for privacy reasons.

Can you please tell me how to find a Search Angel? I'm at the end of my rope with my maternal Great Grandmother's family that comes from an endogamous region in Western Pa. I've come to a brick wall with her maternal grandparents. I have 6 DNA kits from direct descendants of said Great Grandmother. Many of our DNA matches go back to 2 families. The research tree I made based on the DNA matches looks like a tangled mess with all the cousins interweaving and I cannot find the connection from either of those 2 families to my Great Grandmother. I am happy that I was able to solve the initial mystery my mother had been trying to resolve since she was a young girl - which was basically where did her grandmother come from and who were her parents. Even though my mother was raised by her grandmother, she had a difficult time getting any details out of her! Much of the info she did get turned out to be lies, or partial lies! We found that the reason for that was because she had a secret first husband and children that she left in an orphanage prior to meeting my Great Grandfather... who by the way, is another brick wall as he came to America as a stowaway from Croatia, but that's another story! I'm at the point that I've burnt myself out and need help! If you can please point me to a Search Angel, I'd appreciate it!

Have you tried using the Leeds Analysis approach? This can be helpful, although I haven't tried it with an endogamous DNA test. Plenty of explanations online as to how to do it.

It's unusual for someone from that area i.e. Britain or Ireland to get SSA and it is not going to be confused with European so I'd say it is real.

Regarding the African ancestry....as a person of 99% European ancestry, my 1% African ancestry is very perplexing. It has bounced from country and region over the several years of initial results and all of the Ancestry DNA updates. For years it was just my dad and me - both bouncing - but in the last couple of updates, my brother was finally added back in the the African DNA pool. LOL I have many, many hundreds of years of ancestors on my father's line and, largely because I can trace much of my paternal grandfather's family back to Norway, I am pretty sure that this DNA comes from my father's Canadian-born mother, but I cannot find any clue as to who this ancestor or group of ancestors, may be, since we are all very, very English/Irish/Scottish/Welsh, etc. One of the many mysteries of my ancestry life. LOL 🙂

Your DNA is matched to people who have self reported that they have generations of family who come from a particular region. As they get more data, this demographic may change, not your DNA. There's been a great deal of migration in Africa for centuries and notoriously, the slave trade era so there could clusters of similar DNA over a wider region.
Also, an ancestor who may be of mixed race and lighter skinned may pass themselves off as white in those times, erasing any family history of a black ancestor.
