I got the Dell XPS 15 7590 model, and do not regret it one bit. The major reasons I opted for the older model, was the due to the port selection, as well as the lower price of the older model. If I had one small complaint, it would be the smaller trackpad, but I already have a blue tooth mouse so that issue is not really big. Thanks for the comparison!
i have the same laptop and it was infested with bugs. random wakes, overheats in your bag or you find the battery dead, random cpu spikes. its so frustrating. its all thanks to modern standby. i spent countless hours going through reddit threads to find solutions. for the most part everything has been resolved but i wouldnt depend on it. any issues on your end?
This video was AMAZINGLY helpful and I thank you for that! It is currently 11:55 pm on Sat, Nov 28 and I have spent the past 5 hours between the XPS 7590 and the XPS 9500. I have the XPS 9500 sitting in my shopping cart right now after spending a week thinking that I would get the XPS 7590, but I decided to hold out for Black Friday. After watching your video I am so grateful that I DID wait for the Black Friday sales! I am not crazy that the XPS 9500 is lacking USB-A ports, and this almost sent be back to the XPS 7590. What is interesting is that I decided to read the comments before watching your video and I saw that you recommended external speakers to one of your commenters. I had no idea why. Well, watching your video not only explained why external speakers would be a good idea for the XPS 7590, but like you had said, this is a deal breaker. I am currently using my OLD 2013 XPS 13 L322X. It still works, but it wasn't until I started taking virtual classes that I truly noticed a tin can sound when people are speaking. I was looking forward to getting rid of that issue once I finally buy a newer XPS. GOD know that I would not want to be confronted by that same issue with a much newer XPS. Yes, I often use my Beats headphones (when it's late at night and I don't want to wake people) or Beats Pill speakers during the day (when I am away from my laptop) BTW, I had already customized my XPS 9500 order before adding it to my shopping cart. So, here's hoping that I won't have the wobbling issue with the trackpad that you mentioned and I had already read about in the comments/review section of Dell. THANK YOU SO MUCH...and yes, I am now a subscriber!
Awesome! As long as you do not buy one of those “in stock ready to ship” models , you shouldn’t have the trackpad issue! I am now waiting for my new 9500 to fix the trackpad issue. You’ll love it!! Thanks for watching.
Thank you bro you are such a cool guy, this video was amazing for me to finally make a choice, I had forgotten how much better the sound on the new 9500 was! And I agree with you, sound is so important!
Finally someone mentions the gap between the lid of the screen. I hope they fix manufacturing issues for the next generations. I am watching this video from the 7590 oled :) I trusted the old design better because it had 4 years to solve the problems. As this is the last model of this design it is has zero issues so far coming from a 2015 mbp. Some notions btw: Black banding can be solved by installing Dell premier color, input lag can be fixed by setting the screen to 59.9 hz on oled. Trackpad lag can be fixed by reinstalling windows. Audio can be fixed by NOT installing wavemaxx audio. lol I guess preinstalled windows bloat is pretty bad out of the box. Also fn lock for function row can be set with fn+esc on both xps.
I was surprised that you only have 997 subscribers. Quality was ok and the lines were funny. Got offended by the "who uses function keys nowadays" since i'm a programmer. I'm your 998th subscriber. Cheers!
Great comparison! Funny about that trackpad manufacturing issue, I bought a 9500 almost immediately on release and my trackpad is too stiff - often it's too much force to click!
@@ultiprice Sort of! It's inconsistent. Sometimes it feels perfect, similar to the amount of force & feedback from the keyboard (which is great), but most of the time it takes more than double that force which is very straining on the hands. So basically this tells me they were all over the place in terms of their tolerance on the trackpad. (or I got a unit made 'after' the manufacturing fix, and they severely over-compensated with the tightness)
just bought this off the Dell Australia website with 4k Display 16GB Ram 1TB NVMe GTX 1650 Ti 10th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10750H - it hasnt arrived yet, i figure i can always upgrade the RAM down the road if needed, thanks for your review - I paid around 2800 AU
at 5:27 you can Lock the FN Button through the ESC button. So what you're saying about having to always use the FN button is wrong. And right at 1:22, the old xps 7590 also supports USB C charging through its thunderbolt port
I think lack of dc jack on 2020model is also a deal breaker. Since ports are directly attached with motherboard if they goes out we cant charge the device without replacing the motherboard. And continuos
Nice review! I really like the new XPS 15 and 17 design, but I think I'll wait for Dell to refresh their lineup with new CPUs (hopefully AMD zen 3, but tigerlake is ok too) and GPUs before buying
the oled has PWM backlight and you can even see the screen flickering on this video. The PWM backlight frequency is abysmally low at 60Hz which means you are almost guaranteed to have eyestrain with it.
I feel its a better version all through in terms of specs, body and sound especially. As someone who's really inclined to sounds, a bad sound is a huge deal breaker. Nice video Michael.
Hey man, you are very informative and offer great analysis. Don't take this criticism the wrong way, but I think you should speak more like you would if you were explaining this to your friends. Relax more and smile. You've already nailed the technical side, now you just need to humanize the review. Be yourself :). Thanks for the great video though, it helped me make my decision!
Awesome video. I was trying to see if getting the older version, to save some money, was worthwhile but for me the features of the new XPS outweigh the small savings.
Thank you so much for the wonderful video and the very useful comparison, could you please tell us your opinion about the temperature of the new XPS? I am someone who is obsessed with the issue of temperature and fan noise, so your help is highly appreciated in evaluating this issue.
Thanks for watching ! So for the new xps 9500, the thermals are not amazing given that it's a thin and light and no vapour chamber. So under normal use under the ultra performance setting, after about an hour the bottom may be somewhat warm to the touch. During gaming and heavy use of the dedicated gpu the pc will get quite hot and the fans will be running at full speed, but it is a barable noise that isn't too distracting. The good part is that the high heat sections are in the upper middle keyboard area, so you rarely feel it on either palm or fingers. Overall, I have not found any major issues with thermals
Any former Mac users make the jump to this model? I'm a former Linux user who's been using a 1st gen 15" Retina MBP. I noticed this XPS is available with either 4K or FHD+ screen. Is this unit comparable to the MBP? Is the 4K screen worth the upgrade? Apple's 15" Retina seems to be right between those resolutions. I might stick with Mac just to ease the migration. But after the non-replaceable glued-in batteries, patching splits in my power cords with electrical tape for years, and Apple sacrificing things like function keys and keyboard travel for the gimmicky touch bar on the newer ones, I'm not feeling as enthusiastic about Apple as I used to.
I am getting Dell XPS 7590, i7-9750H, 16gb ram, 1Tb ssd, GTX 1650, FHD, for $1223 - student discount. Is it worth it? BTW nice video. You're going long way. When you have millions of subscribers, remember I subbed under 600 subs.😉
can you share where you get this deal? I am also looking for a 7590 model from last year and the price is still $1799 even with the Black Friday discount.
I really wanted to get this laptop. Though hugely disappointed that dell couldn’t fix the trackpad after 6 months... also, I think I’m done with intel for now... Let’s see what dell does next year. For now leaning towards Apple M1
@@ultiprice Thanks for your reply! Another question: the old one has a oled display and the new - ips. I was about to buy the new one because of the oled, but actually I like the form factor of the new one more. So, my question: how does the ops display of the new Dell feel in comparison with the oled? Does it feel for the eyes like the same level of optical quality or a kind of a step back?
The "black" issue is totally "natural" for the OLED one. OLED is showing the "true" compression of netflix stuff. Put in some uncompressed 4k and you will see it looks much much better. Modern TVs habe algorithms to make those black "crush" disappear (those first OLED TVs had the same issue). The IPS one cant show this compression cause it cant show those dark colors and compressed stuff is especially compressed in darker areas.
Definitely the 9500. Since I mostly play classic, 1080P is just fine for the resolution. However, the speakers and speed of the 9500 greatly outperform the older version. I have quite a few games installed on the 9500 and it has performed all of them flawlessly, except cyberpunk.
I don't really understand what's wobbly? It seems fine to me just makes a clicky sound when you click. Does it make that sound when you scan around the trackpad?
The sound you hear in the video is not me clicking. It's me simply applying a little bit of force onto the trackpad. It doesn't register as a click. The real click sound is louder and you have to press harder like a normal trackpad click.
@@ultiprice thanks for clarifying so basically it makes the sound before the click activation is what you're saying, I can see how that can get annoying thinking you've clicked but I'm fact haven't
function key info is wrong ... it works directly and indirectly ... it depends on your setting ... also the 4k OLED info is incorrect ... new XPS comes with 4k OLED aswell
That was an awesome comparison, thanks! Interesting what you said about the speakers as I was on both of these machines in a store today, and the store was too noisy to hear how good the bass etc was, but one thing I did notice through all the noise was the new xps 15's speakers had a distinctive rattle on both sides, esp the left. Is that something you've noticed? The 4k oled is truly breathtaking, esp next to the fhd of the newer xps. I'm sure the 4k version of the new one is gorgeous too. Do you know if the new 4k touchscreen displays on the new models have that awful colour banding and blocky dark colours thing? Because that would drive me nuts.
There shouldn't be any rattling of the speakers on the new 9500. Also, there shouldn't be any banding issues as that was just an OLED thing. So I would say it is pretty safe to get the new 9500 or 9700!
@@ultiprice well I had a play on another new 15 inch xps in a different store yesterday and that one also had rattly speakers. They also had an old oled from the previous gen there too, again those were fine (albeit quieter and lacking in richness). 2 out of 2 doesn't inspire me with confidence. On the positive side both had rock solid trackpads.
Hi, for the color banding, I've noticed the same problem on the new xps15 9500 4k display. I only could manage to fix this by removing the dell color software and replacing the Dell's OEM inted HD driver with the latest legacy intel HD graphics driver. I'm wondering though is there any big advantage to have the new xps UHD+ version over the FHD+ one? I'm thinking of switching in order to have better batery life. Thanks
I personally think the fhd model is sufficient in terms of pixel density with the added bonus of battery life. If you never use the unit on the go , then the uhd version will be clearer overall. I use the laptop for gaming, and the 1650ti isn’t powerful enough to game in 4K anyways, so my vote would be for the fhd panel. Thanks for watching!
hey hello, I have the same exact issue as you with black pixel blocks in 3:47, exept when i reset color setting my screen turns completly black and i should connect an external monitor in oreder to fix it again by reinstallin the driver. Any other idea how to slove this issue? Iv made e complete reset to my pc, reinstalled the windows from begining and no dell app. who messes with colors is in my pc.
7590 OLED all the way! Speakers on a laptop, non-issue. Display. Display. Display! As someone who switched from MacBook to XPS, keyboard is just fine on the 7590. The difference between the systems is, well, very first-worldish. Both are great and it's become ridiculous for me to see them as astronomically different. They simply aren't. The 9500 is great, as is the luscious 7590 OLED. Period.
@@ultiprice They're nothing to write home about, but I don't find they're horrible or ineffective. If I want/need more, I connect a respectable bluetooth speaker or slip on headphones. I've owned MacBooks (15" and 17") and sure they provide better sound but it's the least thing I miss about using a Mac. I suspect that's because sound on laptops has never been a priority for me--and I'm a musician (i.e., I know a thing or two about sound). In any case, I find reviews of the 7590 exaggerate the sound deficit. In fact, I was worried when I ordered it, expecting the worst. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the sound on the 7590 did the trick (for me). What bugged me hella more was the carbon-fiber deck (what most reviewers raved about) since it's a print magnet. Dbrand to the rescue!
Well put. The new 9500 palm rest seems to be less of a fingerprint magnet and more resistant to tarnish. I could see that if you went into the 7590 expecting very poor speakers that the onboard speakers would be pleasantly acceptable. I went in with the false sense that it would be comparable to all other 2020 high-end laptops, so felt some disappointment. It's true though, that in the grander scheme of things, the speakers are not the only thing to be focused on. I didn't get to notice a huge difference between the 4k OLED and the 1080p screen on the 9500. I have been daily driving the 9500 recently and just enjoy it's extra layer of refinement. I've found a work around for the wobbly trackpad by sticking a piece of electrical tape under the battery. Silly one would have to do that though in this day and age.
I ran into that issue with the XPS 9310 too. The only fix that I could find is to turn off standby sleep completely and use hibernate. So closing lid and power button hibernate instead of sleep. Then the overheating issue doesn’t happen.
@@ultiprice what i did was upgrade to windows 10 pro to turn off automatic updates in group policy editor, disabled tasks that would wake my laptop from sleep in tasks scheduler, made sure no devices in devices manager would wake it from sleep in device manager ie the fingerprint reader, disabled unnecessary services, changed some values in the reg editor to truly disable automatic brightness despite it already been turned off in the new windows 10 settings. tweaked display settings in intel graphics command center to reduce color banding. it took numerous hours reading through countless reddit threads just to get everything working smoothly but even so, i still cant comfortably rely on it that it would work the moment i need to do something important. no one should have to go through all that just to get everything to work at it should from the factory. i would not recommend this laptop, or any windows laptop for that matter, to anyone who isnt tech savy. im tech savy myself and dealing with the issues gave me headaches
Wrong on the Function Keys. Software developers use them all the time, hundreds of times a day probably. This is a deal breaker. Visual Studio Run application in debug = F5 Step current line in debug =F10 Goto object definition = F12 EXCEL Create chart from selected data =F11. Loads of options to assign quick keys. Why would anyone prefer fast access to the volume or brightness unless you're only using it for video and gaming, which are not the main markets for this laptop btw., and not something you need hundreds of times per day. Great video generally but in this one point you are totally wrong when you say 'nobody uses the function keys anymore'. That is just something you do. So it's subjective, not objective. Hope this helps clear things up. Maybe speak to some developers and the target market. Now, if dell put the option in the bios to allow this to be configurable (and who knows, maybe they did as there are so many options in there), then this would suit everyone.
Thanks! You’re absolutely right. The XPS is quite targeted towards creators and creators use the FN keys quite a bit. So actually it would make sense for them to be the default functions for those keys. Thanks for the insight !
I made the review one day before the M1 :) but... with that being said. I do agree the M1 is a beast hands down. But it does not support a dedicated graphics card. And for those of us that require a dedicated graphics card, this is a good option for now, especially with Black Friday deals, before the M1 is paired in the MBP 16 with a dedicated graphics next year.
The idea of dedicated graphics I think will become an obsolete concept, especially if it’s runs slower then it runs on a shared SoC. Not to mention, I don’t think Apple will go back to a dedicated graphics card in their ARM computers ( they’ve got intel for that) I’m sure they will increase the graphics and performance capabilities of their newer processors or maybe adding dual SoC’s to their ARM machines but I doubt we’ll see a separate graphics card in their ARM computers. Conventional thinking would tell us they would have to however, when have that ever applied to Apple?” Lol!
Thanks for the comparison, I'm about to upgrade from a 2019 model XPS13 to an XPS15. I'm deffo going with the 9500!

Oh, speaking of headphones 😂 Loved that one
4:04 what did you say is the name of the movie
LoL, I'm watching the sound section of the comparison with my 7590 and trying to notice the difference with the onboard speakers... ironic
Very helpful.
Would you recommend the 7590 for editing 4k & and 5k videos?
It could handle it just fine in my opinion. The 9500 graphics aren’t that much better, and I can edit 4K videos without issue.
is the new one lighter and smaller?
Yes it is quite a bit smaller but only about .2 pounds lighter. However because of its form factor it overall feels smaller and lighter.
@@ultiprice thx!!
My 11 year old Asus ux31 has a "2021" opening feel
great review
I really love the 9500 but I really need the convenience of a USB type A
It’s true. But dongle life isn’t all that bad once you get use to it !
What? Bro that doesn't make any sense, like nobody uses USB A anymore.
@@troywalt4834 You are absolutely wrong!
Perhaps try to uninstall dell colour calibration !
@@ultiprice thanks for answering, that dosnt exist on my pc, iv deleted almost all dell apps
Did U find a solution for the display issue , please let me know when U do, thank you
You can disable the dell colour calibration wizard and it should fix it. It’s because the calibration from dell and the intel driver are conflicting.
@@ultiprice Thank you so much for your reply , but is there a permanent solution. I tried what you told me and it doesn't work all the time.
I haven’t found one yet :(
Is that new dell XPS 15 has OLED screen?
No the new XPS doesn’t have an oled option. It has a 1080P and 4K non oled option.
Which is good, because no PWM!
@@ImpactSpace OLED doesn't have PWM... see other videos...
Nice review and comparison, yea speakers sound is very sucks and cheap, my Sony walkman sounds much better ...wish DELL comes with a speaker upgrade 😁
@4:24 thanks alot this broke my computer and now it's a permanent black screen
Who cars about black bars 3:00 ??
If you only watch videos, this is not the laptop for you!
16 to 10 offers benefits for pretty much everything
Between black bars and black plastic bezel, I'd take the black bars and extra screen real estate ANY day of the week.
The 16:9 has black bars with the big bezels also 😂
7590 OLED all the way! Period.
You don't mind the 7590 speakers?
@@ultiprice if you care about nice sound you shouldn't use the internal speaker ...
just got this xps 7590 old one for cheap ,speaker not that bad as yours
agree with that 7590 and 9570 have really terrible keyboard
get neither...
theyre infested with bugs.
my main issue is modern standby
Hell bro i will buy xps9500 is the best from xps 7590
Wrong on the Function Keys.
Software developers use them all the time, hundreds of times a day probably.
This is a deal breaker.
Visual Studio
Run application in debug = F5
Step current line in debug =F10
Goto object definition = F12
EXCEL
Create chart from selected data =F11.
Would you buy one of these in 2025 for 70 to 150
In screen resolution xps9500 like screen Mobil iPhone where xps 7590 like s 23 ultra😂
very k OLED ... just pay extra and buy
Why would I get one of these over one of the new M1’s? This review is either too early or too late! Lol!!😂😂
Conventional thinking would tell us they would have to however, when have that ever applied to Apple?” Lol!
this should be a 5 minute video.
you need to get to the point much faster. you spent a whole minute talking about FN keys. jesus christ
