looking to get this one for college film courses, where ill be doing video editing almost everyday, how has the temps been while you have been using yours? Have you run into any over heating or thermal throttling?
I first noticed the banding issue on my 9570 while watching Netflix. Had me scratching my head for a while thinking it was a compression issue. After some digging, im almost certain it is to do with the intel HD graphics drivers. If you have a video open with compression artifacts, pause it and open the Intel graphics control panel and go to display > colour settings. If I move one of the sliders (contrast, for example) 1 point, and then back to where it was, then hit apply, the banding seems to subside
I have the OLED and for most content and use it looks incredible, but I find the whites noticeably over warm. It's quite distracting and I'm concerned about it affecting my photo editing (I've not had a chance to do any serious editing yet though since buying the machine). This is after calibrating with DisplayCal and Color Munki Display. Any advice? Perhaps its due to the DCI P3 coverage you mentioned?
So happy with the non-reflective OLED screen. I jump around between co-working spaces and coffee shops and my touchscreen XPS 15 was like a mirror if I sat next to a window. It was almost impossible to see what was actually on my screen. Soooo frustrating. I now have the OLED screen and I'm so happy with the non-reflective screen. It looks amazing and noooooo reflections now.
Hi, Tom. Thank you for your great review. The question is how are your eyes dealing with OLED? No irritation? OLED looks great, but I noticed my eyes become more tired from my OLED smartphone screen rather than from LCD on my laptop.
You replied to my comment on your other video saying I should not get the oled. Glad I still bought the OLED because we don't have the 1TB version of the 4k touschscreen in the UK haha! Can't wait to receive my laptop shipment now that you think oled is actually the better choice 😊
Those artifacts at 2:35 on LCD panel aren't here because of the panel itself. I'm 100% sure it's because of Intel GPU video settings. You can turn off their "improvements" in Intel Graphics Control Center app and you have to do it once per display (settings are separate for internal display and external monitors and TVs). It was ruining videos on my XPS 15 9570.
I had a similar screen flickering issue on the Dell XPS 7590 4k Touch but it was my own doing. So it was the heatsink placement. I had re-pasted and everything was good except the number 3 screw hole was elevated a lot! I put this down to screws one and 2 causing the displacement and pushed on. When all was back together have mild at first, when loosened it was extreme and tightened better. Then I noticed (after a nights sleep when i could think properly) that the top of the heatsink, the VRAM and MOSFET cooling portion, (in the centre and off the top of the pipes) that part had caught on the silver lip of the laptop and was not sitting flush! Was both a horrific revelation and a relief. I disassembled once more, re-pasted, and correctly positioned the sink and all is well. So i'd check that and also the thermal pads under that part or the sink, mine needed to be slightly replaced.
I'd always choose an IPS LCD panel over an OLED panel for anything other than watching movies. The consensus seems to be that the color vibrancy of OLED panels comes at the expense of color accuracy. While color vibrancy is great for watching movies, it's not so great for content creation where you actually rely on accurate color reproduction. So it's interesting that you would choose an OLED panel for video/photo editing over an IPS panel when most others would advice precisely the opposite...
Hi Tom, I'm considering buying one of these two laptops at the moment and was interested in knowing almost a year on, have you experienced burn out on the OLED display?
I'm on the fence about getting either the oled or ips lcd, I will be using it for video editing and streaming so the oled would be nice but I have the same concern
Great video! I love the banding comparison. I would love a game of thrones the long night freeze frame comparison (jk, compression and bad lighting can't be solved with oled)
Random question for XPS users - for all those video editors out there that use an XPS & premiere pro... What Dell Premiercolor display do you use on your laptop when you're editing? Photo (Adobe RBG) or Internet (sRGB) ???
You got a point. But unless you are in the editing tasks, you are not gonna give too much atenttion to those details. Great review dude as usual, you never let us down!!!
I am amazed over that your last 5-6 years can find a lot of OLED TVs, but not any OLED-laptops or external computer displays. Thats relly mind blowing. Good to see some few laptops start to go over to "old" OLED techology, lol.

My concern is the difference when gaming. I know this is not a gaming laptop but I would use it for world or warcraft occasionally. The 1080p panel has a lot less graphics to push unless you play in 1080p and have a softer image due to scaling.
I ran into PWM flickering on my 1st 4k tv by vizio...it looked great but I was getting terrible eyestrain and headaches shortly after buying it and couldnt understand why....then after a lot of research, i heard of this PWM flickering and on the vizio it was caused by a setting called "Backlight control". once that was turned off, the issue with my eyes stopped like magic...
Hey Tom - great vid again... Just curious, which Dell docking station is good for this laptop (TB16 or TB19) to connect Dell 27 4K monitor? I read from reddit TB19 was not a good fit. Which one do u recommend it? Thanks.
I'm surprised you did not focus more on the burn in problems that OLED has as a PC has a lot of static pictures which can cause this. Even more than TV's and this is a problem I have experienced myself without any help from LG. My message to all is to avoid OLED unless you are prepared to replace your device frequently.
Though, the Alienware R3 has been out for a couple of years now and had no burn in issues whatsoever. Also, LG uses a different kind of technique for their panels compared to Samsung.
The only thing I use my touchscreen for on my XPS 9570 is to close out of windows. 😅 I personally think unless you have the XPS 9575 or a 2 in 1 laptop a touch screen is really useless for anything but shutting out windows. You cannot use the pen to write because the angle is too weird. But if you already have a 9560 or newer it is pointless to upgrade to a new XPS right now also. Great video Tom!
I'LL go with OLED I love the color contrast in OLED ..it gives us rich look to enjoy with the screen each and every moment u spent with your OLED LAPTOP
From the very start of the video I could instantly tell the one on the right was the OLED, all you have to do is look at anything black on the screen. You can instantly tell the color black is deep rich pixels being completely turned off as opposed to light pretending to be the color black with the LCD
I just got mine xps 15 this evening. I'm surprised by the heft of the laptop. I always have this picture of Dell's being plastic-y and low end... i'm pleasantly surprised. But i went with the 4k touch screen instead of the OLED. I like the extra ability to touch the screen instead of using the touch pad all the time. Also, i think it could be great for photo editing... does anyone know if the Dell Premium Active Pen is compatible with the 7590? I haven't been able to find it...
Tons of respect for that little fix for screen flickering. I was wondering if it makes sense to buy OLED for someone who spends quite some time coding. From what I see\hear ead seems like it's not an issue with that "panel auto update" fix
You should have covered the durability issues of each a little more. I hear that OLEDs can burn out in certain areas more easily than the LCD screens. You make good videos but not enough details. They feel like infomercials.
Banding on LCD is because of wide gamut and color transformation to sRGB from Adobe RGB, because Windows operates in sRGB. OLED doesn't cover Adobe RGB to 100% so that tool you are talking about was not supposed to be used with OLED. In order to fix banding switch to sRGB in the tool, and use sRGB color profile. And you will have perfect grays
I tent to believe the comparison test you did at 2:28 has some problems, I tested the same video on my junk laptop, entry level 4k tv and asus mg279q monitor, none of them shows banding.
I'm worried about the growing issue about screen bleeding on LED base screens the thing is you won't notice it immediately it takes 2-3 years before you start to notice specially loptops screens stay screen on more longer than smartphones like when you are editing, rendering and those kind of stuff i wish they can fix this LED problem because obviously LED based screens are so much better than LCDs
I had really bad banding on the OLED. You should look at your screen at 5-10% gray and see. Maybe I just lost the panel lottery? Had to send it back.also the heat it was putting out was awful.
I have the exact same issue. I've just spent way too much time trying to fix it and nothing works. I think I'll return it and go for a mac.. they are just so much more expensive.. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do fix the banding issues?

Panel self refresh is for avoiding Burn-In Insuppose. Similar to Always On Display in AMOLED phones. Turning this off means risking the life of display. Correct me if I am wrong.

What do you mean by closer. The oled is better in every way and release 1/3 the amount of blue light that the lcd releases. So it is better for your eyes. Only downside is burn in
@The Tech Chap: Watching this on my 4K OLED Spectre. This one seems to have an additional pen input touch layer which is visible under certain circumstances, like a grainy pixelated layer on top of the OLED panel itself- and unfortunately this layer reduces a bit of the OLEDs stunning resolution and clearness. As your reviewed Dell is a non touch (glossy) display you might have clearer whites with this one. For those having concerns about burn in: It won't happen at all. I've been using a 13 inch OLED Spectre for over 2 years, most of the time with static elements and never had any burn in issues. Even color shift (due to the shorter longevity of blue pixels) was not noticeable. There are some potential issues with the current 4K Samsung AMOLEDs though: PWM flicker at around 60 Hz, color bending with grey colors/backgrounds, color 'lag' when moving certain colored objects in front of a black background, contrast shift at highest brightness settings (that might be a driver issue).

Angelo Merte I think, in this case (Dell XPS), the LCD’s quality is high enough for most people, and when factoring all other aspects (besides display quality) the LCD has the upper hand... But, it’s eventually a matter of needs and personal preferences...
The problem with the IPS ones is that you can only get them with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. That's enough for the average person, but, if you're buying the 4k IPS display, which comes with an extremely powerful i9 processor, to do 4k video editing, you need more RAM and storage than that. I don't really see the point of the i9 with 16GB of RAM. If you only need 16GB of RAM, you don't need an i9.
Actually, I think the banding is due to compression. I have a 4K LCD monitor and an OLED TV. The same thing happens on my monitor with highly compressed content from RUclips, Netflix and Amazon Prime. However, whenever I download a raw 4k video file or connect my 4k blu ray player to my monitor, that banding-like effect is gone. I think OLEDs just handles compressed video better than LCDs.
Of course, it's possible that you can see banding in some videos due to compression. However, in this case, it's Intel's GPU drivers settings for videos. From my experience, it's best to just disable all of Intel's "features" because they make every video look more compressed as evidenced in this video. Also, don't believe this guy then it comes to Dell's laptops, this video sort of confirms that again. He missed so many XPS 15 issues that are present on various models for years (as evidenced by other trustworthy sites like notebookcheck, ultrabookreview and users on Reddit). I guess he gets free devices from Dell so he's being very cautious with issues.

Since you said you won't be doing a lot of video or photo editing, the LCD is the better option as it is much cheaper. But if you can get the oled it's just phenomenal and once you get used to oled it's hard to go back to lcd

Two questions for you that might help me finally pull the trigger: 1. Which panel performs faster for gaming or would you say they’re the same with respect to ghosting or screen tearing. I use my SB2 currently for light gaming and the screen quality when moving quickly and panning side to side isn’t very good. 2. Does last years XPS perform the same as this years? For me I couldn't justify spending the extra $250 - $300. I bought a 4k 27 inch monitor on Amazon prime day with that money instead.
For me, my mind will never make up to buy an OLED version since I worry the screen will suffer from severe burn-in in a couple years. Imagine being in a work environment and using the same application 9-10 hours a day. In fact, IPS LCD panels have really improved in quality over the years, and OLED panels are better suited for Tablets and Phones where content consumption is generally more.
Proof it.
It was a old configuration ,now it a myth.
Watching this one a XPS 7590 4K OLED, I'm glad I got this one. Bought it for my graphic design studies and it will definitely do the job
I am also considering to buy this one. Can you maybe tell me more about the battery life you experience on the things you do? Beceause that is something where my doubts are
@Anthony LaMarc Thanks for the info! Atm my (old) laptop can't even get 2 hours so that sucks. But I would love to go to school (around 4/6hours) and use my laptop without charging. (not heavy load, like using lightroom or word). I am someone who use lightroom alot and after effects for video editing. So I assume OLED is the way to go for me. How is the screen brightness outdoor btw?
looking to get this one for college film courses, where ill be doing video editing almost everyday, how has the temps been while you have been using yours? Have you run into any over heating or thermal throttling?
@@alyj6381 no thermal throttling so far, ive noticed it getting a little bit warmer when rendering but nothing to worry about at all
@@thomasvandenbergh1098 do you have the i7 or i9?
How is it now
@@rohanvernekar1947 fine!

That's true, it might be Intel's power consumption "improvements". They ruined my display as well, when my laptop was not plugged in.
You could also mention better response times for gaming on the OLED, while concluding the video.
Random question for XPS users - for all those video editors out there that use an XPS & premiere pro... What Dell Premiercolor display do you use on your laptop when you're editing?
Photo (Adobe RBG) or Internet (sRGB) ???
Adobe
The best RUclipsrs who goes through every aspect of the laptop

Thank you very much for this Comparison which was really helpful for my decision .
Thanks man, been waiting for someone to do the comparison. Finally.
You got a point. But unless you are in the editing tasks, you are not gonna give too much atenttion to those details. Great review dude as usual, you never let us down!!!
Great video. For XPS 9320, Which one do you think is best for productivity? Mostly MS office, Excel, web browsing. Thank you
I am amazed over that your last 5-6 years can find a lot of OLED TVs, but not any OLED-laptops or external computer displays. Thats relly mind blowing. Good to see some few laptops start to go over to "old" OLED techology, lol.
I have to OLED version as well and I do get that bright flicker too. Thanks for sharing the solution to solve this issue.
Did it solve ur issue?
@@neseanjohnson1585 it didn't make any difference. But with the latest firmware update, flicker seems not occur anymore.

Big throttling and overheating with i9 - avoid unless you want to undervolt
@@Thetechchap :( that could be a deal breaker for me. What if it had the i7-8750h on the older model? Any other recs for a relatively thin & light laptop that would be best for video creation & editing using adobe programs?
The video that I've been waiting for along time.. Thanks tom you are the 🐐
My concern is the difference when gaming.
I know this is not a gaming laptop but I would use it for world or warcraft occasionally.
The 1080p panel has a lot less graphics to push unless you play in 1080p and have a softer image due to scaling.
Great content. Thanks! May you also test the OLED/LCD for PWM flickering? Thanks bro!
Thanks Tom
Very informative video!
Hey Tom - great vid again... Just curious, which Dell docking station is good for this laptop (TB16 or TB19) to connect Dell 27 4K monitor? I read from reddit TB19 was not a good fit. Which one do u recommend it? Thanks.
i'm a owner xps 7590. OLED dispaly is awesome especially when i watch 4k documentary, photos, movie. i want to say you should buy it.
exactly :)
Is this laptop perfect for a computer science student who wants to code alot and do a bit of photo and video editing and watching youtube/Netflix..??
Yh
Yep! Ideal for that!
Why not the X1 Extreme? The keyboard on the thinkpad will be much better as you'll spend more time on the keyboard
a bit overkill. Also keep in mind that you maybe want to write something down in classes. x360 by lenovo is pretty good
I'm surprised you did not focus more on the burn in problems that OLED has as a PC has a lot of static pictures which can cause this.
The touch screens are very useful in photo editing for the pinch and zooming. That's my primary reason, it just feels so natural...
I'LL go with OLED I love the color contrast in OLED ..it gives us rich look to enjoy with the screen each and every moment u spent with your OLED LAPTOP
That banding issue on lcd can be fixed inside the intel graphics control panel inside color settings
By changing color gamt from natural to vivid
From what I see\hear
ead seems like it's not an issue with that "panel auto update" fix
Xps 15 7590 Oled vs Razer Blade 15 Oled vs Aero 15 Oled. Who's the winner? Would love to see a comparison.
Those who know what to look for can easily identify the two in a side-by-side comparison. It was the contrast that tipped me off.
How’s that oled display holding up? Any issues with burn in or other problems? Considering oled for my next laptop.
I was waiting for this!!! Thanks!
Really nice to see the differences between these
OLED is the panel which makes display look incredible at 1080p or even UHD. Its makes the experience a lot more better than IPS.
*Meanwhile*
Pro gamers: 1080p 144Hz or 240Hz with
Panel self refresh is for avoiding Burn-In Insuppose. Similar to Always On Display in AMOLED phones. Turning this off means risking the life of display. Correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks bro for this helpful comparison video. I was about to order the IPS one but now I’ll buy the one with OLED panel 🖖
Hi John, did you buy the OLED? how has the reliability been any flickering issues? Thanks

I just got hired for my first full time job as a teacher and am needing a new laptop badly (mine is 12 years old)! I love the true blacks of amoled but I also need battery life. I would like to see the actual color differences and any possible issues between the three before i spend the money i have been trying so hard to save up so i can offer my students a better distant learning experience. Thank you for taking the time to read this!
Oled was $50 cheaper option vs the 4K LCD up here in Canada. Get my oled xps 15 tomorrow 😁
the main difference is LCD arrive in 3-5 business days and the OLED is more than 30!!!!
There are some potential issues with the current 4K Samsung AMOLEDs though: PWM flicker at around 60 Hz, color bending with grey colors/backgrounds, color 'lag' when moving certain colored objects in front of a black background, contrast shift at highest brightness settings (that might be a driver issue).
exactly same mesh crap on the p1 gen2 of lenovo i just received.. this companies should not be trusted they are backstabbers selling 3k$ duds to everybody with a smile ... they fake not knowing about the defect while they sell thousand of these piece of crap voluntary broken oled panel

Watching this on my Pantone calibrated Aero 15 OLED. Love this panel and it's insane contrast and color volume. Thanks to Samsung for an awesome screen.
I think for anyone not editing videos and photos - the LCD is a much better choice.
even without editing the OLED has a far superior picture so i don't really see this as a clear choice unless you value battery life or don't want to pay the premium
as the owner of a CRT and an OLED phone my IPS LCD with dogshit contrast fucks me up every time when theres any black/dark content

I think, in this case (Dell XPS), the LCD’s quality is high enough for most people, and when factoring all other aspects (besides display quality) the LCD has the upper hand...
One for gaming another video, picture, and content creation. Go for which you do the most
Going to buy the 1080p version of XPS 15 7590. Is that a good option or should I go with OLED for an extra $300? I am a research student in the engineering domain; and, not a video editor but do photo editing occasionally.
And Tom, expected your thoughts on the 1080p version in this video.
Since you said you won't be doing a lot of video or photo editing, the LCD is the better option as it is much cheaper. But if you can get the oled it's just phenomenal and once you get used to oled it's hard to go back to lcd
Thank you for this video. I’ve been torn between two screens. I Know these are not gaming laptops but I would like to do some moderate gaming on them. Two questions for you that might help me finally pull the trigger:
1. Which panel performs faster for gaming or would you say they’re the same with respect to ghosting or screen tearing. I use my SB2 currently for light gaming and the screen quality when moving quickly and panning side to side isn’t very good.
2. Does last years XPS perform the same as this years? I’m leaning toward the LCD and if this is the same as last years I might get one of the Dell Outlet models.
Thank you!
(Last years lcd perform the same as this years lcd is what I meant)

very useful. I was suprised to see you got 100% adobeRGB in teh OLED, as Dell does not advertise it as such. any chance you saved the DispayCal results? what does the deltaE is for both panels? (for me, that is an essential part of the color accuracy as important as the % coverage)

@@Evie0133Totally agree, if you play games and/or doing anything GPU intensive then the Razer OLED is worth it.
