      The XPS is targetted towards a market that is similar to what the Macbook Pro is aiming at. Creative professionals and/or media enthusiasts who need a mobile computer powerful enough to handle what they need. Gamers on the other hand may not necessarily care about weight, and instead want maximum performance, which usually entails a much thicker design to accomodate the cooling required for such a load.

    • @bruhdabones
      @bruhdabones 4 года назад +3

      Zeldagigafan exactly. The styling and disappointing lack of ports are very obviously an attempt at stealing some of the MacBook market share. I could see playing Minecraft or CS:GO on this with moderate settings.

    Great in depth review. Heading to college next semester to study Electrical Engineering, and this seems like a good laptop for that but also for some lighter gaming for someone who comes from Xbox. Only current issue is it keeps going to sleep. No particular time. Initially thought it was due to updates and program downloads but it did so also after I plugged in an external hard drive???
    Changed battery/sleep/hibernate settings and still occurs. I’ll be contacting dell support later this evening regarding this issue

      IM also thinking of switching for my laptop. I want finally want to be able to use proper GPU power since i also do 3d design aside of graphic work. I like this design because it still has a more quality look, great looking display, black finish. I do feel its behold back quite a lot due to bad cooling design. Im thinking about this one, the y540 or y740 or the Zypherus G14. All quite different machines. But not full blown gaming machines.
      PS how is the switch from OSX to Windows, i used to work on them both. BUt now I've been working on OSX for around15 yr torso, i kinda hate the windows system a lot. I find it counter intuitive compared to OSX. Whats your take in it?

      Jarrod'sTech Ah man you cant please everyone. I agree in terms of specs and performance but for me as long as it “can” game and do all my video editing. I’m happy with the trade off of a bit of performance for IMO a more premium metal build and design and battery life. The 1660 is the sweet spot and hopefully they work on the thermals and at least give us a 1650 super with 6GB if that’s a thing. Would be nice if it could do a 1660 but I think they will keep it 130W

    Have this laptop 4K touch display. It’s amazing. Although, when I got it, I immediately noticed a weird lag on the display and after weeks figured out that it was the display resolution.
    For anyone experiencing weird lag (you can tell if you open the settings application while in dark mode and minimize and maximize), simply downscale your resolution.
    You don’t need it to run at 4K all the time anyway & it helps with thermals as well.

I've been doing high-quality production work for companies for a long time and no other device can match the performance this laptop has. glossy finish is a huge advantage, not a drawback. Brighter, more vivid colors and better brightness in general, plus absence of crystallic(?) effect which makes you notice every pixel all the time.
    I want a gaming laptop with a 1080p glossy ips screen, but they don't exist. If you want the screen to be mat, the mat coverings for screens are broadly available, but then again all the beauty of an OLED screen would be gone.

    I have borrowed a Lenovo V330 in the interim and I can't stand the quality of the screen. I don't know if it's the contrast or the colours, but it's unbearable for me - I can't go more than ten minutes without a headache forming, and for my job I'm on it all day.
    However, the Lenovo is a FHD screen, and so is the Dell XPS that I want (I really, really don't want the 4K - out of my price range and reflection/glossy issues).
    So my question is, is the FHD screen of the Dell XPS very good? Are the colours decent, the black levels crisp? You can tell I'm not a techy as any correct terminology is beyond me xD I just don't want to spend out a whole bunch of money only for the screen to be as bad as the Lenovo I'm using.
    I'd really appreciate some advice! Thank you all! :D

    I feel like powerful/gaming laptops that lack an ethernet port is an immediate no, but that's just me I guess. Depends on whatever the buyer is gonna use it for, of course.
    I like how the "gamer aesthetic" is becoming less popular, it's not particularly nice to look at, but I can't say I'm a fan of "thinner and thinner" laptops either, that cuts stuff like the ethernet port because of how thin it is.

    Hey Jarrod. I am really looking at purchasing the Dell XPS 15. Looking at it with the I7 9750H, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and the 1920x1080 Screen. I'm not too concerned about the 4K as the FHD screen will boast some better battery life and storage isn't an issue as I dump my photo and video files onto two different external drives. My question is this, are there any laptops you would recommend I buy over the XPS 15 that have better performance when it comes to Lightroom, Photoshop and Premiere Pro? I have heard good things about the Lenovo Extreme Gen 2 but I can get the Dell XPS as spec'd above for $1619.99 plus tax (Canadian) at the moment. Which to me seems like an unreal price. Thanks if you respond! I am just very unsure at the moment as there are so many laptops to choose from at the end of the day.

      Yeah personally I'd look at the Gigabyte Aero 15 (new one with improved cooling, not the old model), or the Eluktronics MAG-15. All have the same core extra features that most other laptops are missing (Thunderbolt/SD card slot/big battery (MAG also has mech keyboard)). They're priced similarly but with better CPU/GPU performance as they come with GTX 1660 Ti for similar money, but that is about 50% faster in games compared to the 1650. You can get a rough idea of how the XPS 15 stacks up with this graph covering recent laptops I tested in Premiere, I actually exported this XPS 15 review as the test video haha: jarrods.tech/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/lenovo-y540-adobe-premiere-performance-1536x864.png

    Hey! On the dell site they say the 4K OLED version has an anti reflective coating on the display. Why is it glossy on the review unit?

    • @fzst-ub5xf
      @fzst-ub5xf 4 года назад +1

      It just means that there is a anti-reflective coating applied on top of the glass - which of course is glossy.
      They try to keep the reflections under control this way. It is still way more reflective than a matte screen though. So if you prefer a matte screen for work than you shouldnt get this model. However Im actually quite impressed with the coating. It definately is less reflective than alot of other laptops Iv seen in person. Including the "normal" glass of a xps 13 with touchscreen, which I thought was too uncomfortable to use in a well lit room (I guess the xps 15 with touch uses the same glass surface?)
      Coming from a matte laptop surprisingly, I can live with the reflections of the 7590 OLED. Its not as bad as most other glossy screens.

    • @JarrodsTech

      @@lgjsp99 Well to be clear here:
      The screen is still WAY more reflective than a matte screen. But I noticed that its less reflective than most other glossy panels out there - namely all the touchscreen panels I checked out in person. Like the Lenovo Yoga, Dell XPS 13, Microsoft surface and some others.... I would say its about on par (I want to say its even a little bit better) with the macbook pros, who handle reflections quite good also (there are variations within the mac-lineup though).
      That beeing said, coming from a matte screen, I can live with it -and I use it on the go alot. And its also WAY more beautiful ;-)
      The matte screen of my other laptop just looks really grainy and liveless in comparison now....

    Jarod, did you notice VRM throttling on this XPS (similar to older models)?
    Where CPU and GPU temps might be okay but Dell has placed a firmware level temperature limit.

      @haxorinator8219 4 года назад

      @@JarrodsTech Unfortunately, I don't think it can be measured with "traditional" means as in sensors with HWiNFO.
      Videos I've seen use IR/Thermal cams like yours, but as you say in many videos you might not be able to disassemble them.
      I just find it strange that they allow the CPU to reach near Tjunction but they don't allow the GPU to boost fully or come close to Tjunction. Therefore I figured it was similar issue to previous XPS models where the VRM temp was the culprit.
      According to Notebookcheck their 1650 averaged 1710Mhz albeit with an Acer Nitro 5, with the majority of 7590s only hitting base clock of 1400Mhz or slightly above (according to Reddit).

    Hi Jarrod. I have just ordered this machine with the i9 mainly for video editing, software development and data science, but I will occasionally play games on it too ;-).
    I run VMs (so need the 32GB) and the data stuff can get really intensive so a little concerned about the three-minute thermal throttling that you mention. Does the cooling pad that you show in your video help with this? Or is there likely to be a mod to allow boosting the fans?
    Currently, on my Surface Pro machines, I use a USB fan to help, which works but is noisy. Do you recommend the pad in your video, or another pad or a bloody great desk fan, or just not buying this laptop?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад +1

      The issue seems to just be how Dell have programmed it, after a while of consistent CPU load the power limit lowers in order to keep the thermals under control. In theory if you can cool it better, it may not do that as soon, also hard to say how the i9 model may differ to what I tested here. Basically any cooling pad or even a basic stand should do the job, I just use a giant one so I can use it regardless of what laptop I am testing. But I seriously care about performance and as these XPS laptops make one of the only lines on the planet to compete with the Macbook Pros, they have to be capable and fast if not better. I prefer Windows OS and the futuristic no-bezel design on the XPS, but as a user of heavy Adobe software I hope they listen to this. Points of improvement for the XPS line.
    • Speakers, enhance them, bring them forward. We don't care what brand it is, just deliver good sound. Especially for the creative professionals.
    • All webcams on laptops suck, why not be the first to introduce a relatively good webcam for once. Especially on a top Windows laptop, which is used video conferences quite a lot.
    • Deliver beast performance not just beast specs, we don't care what chipset and memory, graphics you have let alone don't even know what all those things mean. But it better be good even if it isn't the latest if it's fast it's fast, let it speak for itself.
    • Stop competing with the Macbook Air... We get it, the 13 inch model outperforms the Macbook Air on so many levels. The XPS is light more compact yet a beast comparatively etc. But the XPS 13 is still somewhat behind the Macbook Pro 13 considering performance. Whilst Windows users are almost always recommended going for the XPS, it doesn't always beat the MBP in terms of capability. I want a fast and smooth working computer and not a whole lesson on thermals CPU GPU and what not... It's time to think more about performance and actual quality compared to portability.
    • The trackpad, ehm yeah, make it bigger.
    • At some point the carbon-plastic finish has to go or change. I like it but it has to be improved, a lot. I like the white more glossy option and less rubbery feel of the new XPS 13, but why not improve that and consider using different less bendable materials.
    • Just keep it going! You're the best ❤❤❤

      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад +1

      Yeah fair enough, will also depend on if Dell are willing to boost fan speed and be noisier to offer higher performance. I just wish they give the user the choice, sure by default make it quiet and not perform as well, but if I am exporting a video let me change the fan speed or something.

      I'm also not planning on using this for gaming. I do quite a bit of game dev, which includes programming and modeling in blender, and the occasional build test. My game is low poly. So I will never be using this laptop for actual gaming.
      I just want the raw power for fast compile times and quicker workflow without being bottlenecked by the technology. My current laptop, an Acer Aspire, is like 10+ years old, and can't even run the newest version of Blender anymore. Pretty sad day, honestly. Aero 15 OLED (or many OLED laptops) is extremely inconsistent in quality control and their customer service is just not adequate enough. I managed to return mine to ExcaliberPC after sending them the photo and video proof of defects, but the process is not fun.

    Hey guys! I am a RUclipsr as well and do quite a bit of video editing but I have no idea which specs I need. Here's what I DON'T need. Since I have an external monitor, the size of the laptop screen or it being touchscreen means nothing to me. While very nice, all the premium materials & thinness of the XPS range are also not needed. The laptop also stays in one place so portability is not needed but I don't want a big desktop. I just need a pretty quick laptop that will render my videos as fast as possible. I also would like not to break the bank. Here's what I DO(or think I do)need: I want a Dell. Intel i7 9th or 10th Gen, 16gigs or more of RAM, 512gb Hardrive and not sure if a dedicated graphics card helps in the rendering of videos or if that's for game play on the machine itself of which I do none. Well you dont really need to test the screen - if you put windows in dark mode you already see it, if its there...
      Did you check dark mode out with your test-example?
      I got mine for a week now and I noticed the typical vertical banding on grey, near-black colours - which one can see when windows is in dark mode.
      I can live with the banding but the top right corner gets reallly crushed in dark scenes.
      And I noticed some uniformity-issues when displaying all-white too, the left corner ist brighter than right side of the screen.
      Its not that bad really but I informed Dell and they offered to send a technician to replace the screen. Having read some reviews and comments online about this, it seems like most OLED-screens suffer from this issue to some degree- so now I just dont know if I should have the screen changed or not. I fear it could get worse with the new screen, hence why Im wondering if you noticed any of that behaviour in your panel....
      Otherwise the screen is just gorgeus!
      My phone - an LG V30 - has way worse uniformity issues, and I got used to it. I dont really mind it anymore but then again: I got my phone really cheap and with a bigger screen its much more noticeable.

In the end as long as you have some form of mid range Nvidia GPU you will get a boost in video export, doesn't do much for me during the actual editing process though, you always have the option of transcoding footage to lower res while editing too, the proxies will only be used on the timeline, you will still be able to export at 4K, makes editing smoother.
