At the end of the day when it comes to movie advertising, nothing beats a 15 year old with Adobe after affects procrastinating on a school deadline. LIKE THOSE EDITS are better than any tiktok
Literally I’ve watched so many movies just from seeing TikTok edits of them, and they’re always made by some high school kid with nothing more than Capcut and a dream
its genuinely embarrassing how much they show up the actual official trailers as far as drumming up a community of excited people goes, they’re doing all the work promoting films and media nowadays. free labour😭
Reminds me of when Pixar advertised Brave as an action/war movie when it was actually a “mother and daughter need to wear the getting along shirt movie” and then was surprised when everyone hated it
This is part of the reason why the new Mulan movie failed. A lot of people were already planning to boycott because of the lead actress, but the marketing team didn’t help. They marketed it as more accurate to the legend of Mulan. They also marketed it as more realistic, hence the removal of the songs. Those who paid to watch the movie were disappointed since it wasn’t accurate to the cartoon, or the legend.
I had no idea that everyone hated brave 😭 as a scottish girlie I loved it when I saw it in the cinema and I love it to this day. maybe that's because I'm biased and didn't see any of the marketing (because I was 10 lol)
People no longer have a shared point of reference in terms of media consumption. There is too much content being made. Before, it was conceivable to be aware of everything that was relevant in pop culture, now there is no possible way. People are enjoying their own things completely oblivious to each other. It must be frustrating for advertisers. I remember a time when a prestige movie would come out, all they needed to do was have the stars on Oprah for a special spotlight show and it was a done deal.
I honestly love that, but not the oblivious part. I love people who are willing to share their own niche interests at the time and let me share my own so we can both walk away with potential media to look into for yourselves. I get what you mean though. It's really hard to figure out who to advertise to nowadays tbh. Although I'd still argue genre can be a shared point for some people. Like, for example, the horror community might talk about a new horror flick that just came out.
That also means the individual is bombarded with advertisements that theyre not interested in and effectively failed advertising. Probably lead to the intense data collecting that we see now.
The best movie marketing I've seen recently has been M3GAN. Just having a lot of fun with its ridiculous premise and leaning in to the internet's decision that M3GAN was a mean girl the same way the Babadook was a gay icon.
I went to see M3GAN with my sister because there was nothing else to watch but it was so freaking funny, it's not necessarily a comedy but it has the best comedic dialogue/ situations that I've seen recently. M3GAN was so sassy it was a fun watch!. Not a horror movie for me but great as a comedy
Yes! I hate horror movies and although I’m sure some people wouldn’t say m3gan was horror it was definitely horror for me (I’m a wimp lol) and the marketing made me watch it for sure
I haven't gone to watch M3GAN but I saw the trailer while I was on either this site or twitch. Oddly feels uncomfortable but still seemed more meta than what the movie scene offers. Something about it stood out.
Your TikTok voice was almost scarily accurate... Also, the expense of death in this country is INSANE. I can't even DIE without someone needing to burden it financially. I always tell my family to just throw my body somewhere in Yellowstone and let me give sustenance to the wildlife there.
It's insanely expensive in Germany too because legally even cremated remains have to be put on a cemetery. You can't keep them at home so you have to pay the cemetery just for a tiny bit of space and in a city that's expensive as fuck. Even if you choose the cheapest option which is just unmarked rows of urns on a field on the cemetery. Basically just grass and urns under it and even that option cost my family over 3k 11 years ago when my grandma died so I don't even want to know how much it costs now. People are legitimately getting insurance for their death now so their families can pay for everything.
@@DieAlteistwiederda thankfully you can leave ashes at the crematorium here, my abusive mother is stuck on a shelf forever and I don’t have to ever pay for that. The price of death and how much people are pushed to believe a fancy funeral will make everyone feel better and how the industry preys on grieving people it needs to be talked about more
As a Gen Z-er, I feel like our generation tends to like movies that don’t take themselves too seriously but at the same time we want movies that take themselves seriously without being obvious that they’re trying too hard
I’m an early millennial being born in 84 and I remember the when celebrities weren’t as accessible as they can be now cause of no form of social media until the creation of MySpace so getting something like an autograph was a rare occurrence but now with social media we can see where a celebrity could be through social media posts cause my generation along with gen z have become over sharers on social media
What you want is for a movie to care. That's really it. Not so corporate that it feels disingenuous, not so cynical and pretentious that it loses its soul. Honestly I think what you want is something every movie goer SHOULD want.
One of the best examples of good influencer marketing in recent memory is HBO sponsoring mikes mic to review the new pretty little liars show. Mike had already done a deep dive into the original series, and covered both the positive and negative aspects of the show. So by having him review the new series, instead of some random influencer, HBO reached a ton of people who were already interested in the show with a reviewer who felt authentic and trustworthy.
@@sadem1045 Its kind of innately linked to capitalistic concepts and therefor innately cringe and negative. It's a bit like "alpha male" imo, not worth trying to reclaim the term and make it positive.
Your description makes Babylon sound so much better than I imagined- I had the option to watch Babylon on a plane ride and all the description said was that it was about excess and drug use in hollywood. That's all.
Huh… that description just makes me think “oh yeah, that’s the movie made by Hollywood for Hollywood with every new generation of Hollywood stars” and I would also have passed on it
I feel like social media marketing aimed at gen z should also include fancams. A good edit/fancam can do SO MUCH for people. I haven't even seen a Babylon trailer but I feel like it's peak fancam bait based on how you're talking about it. I've legit watched multi-season shows because of a solid fancam.
Just like how people get into k-pop and in groups because of one member's fancam. Yep, this is how I got into Kpop after watching Seulgi from Red Velvet performing Bad Boy way back in 2018
Fancams and edits on Instagram (back in 2017/18) is how most people got to know about shows and movies. It would be random 'badass' edits or 'plot twist' edits and that's how people would learn about new characters and shows
A note on the demographic that would have gone to see this movie: I think that's me. I am rocketing towards my 30s at a frustratingly uncomfortable rate, and I'm entering an "Old Man Phase" of my own design. I've been taking a lot of recent measures to temper my internet anger, such as limiting my time on Instagram, reading more, and avoiding Tik Tok and it's culture of brainwashed children like the plague. I'm also really burnt out on Hollywood money sinks like the MCU, and I've been making the effort to go see smaller scale artsy movies that I think will give me something better to talk about. Beyond a 5 second teaser trailer of Tobey Maguire smiling creepily and just knowing that the movie was called "Babylon", I know literally nothing about this movie. All I heard was that it bombed; the most information I've heard about it at all is your descriptions of the setting from this very video. I'm actually baffled that they tried to market this one to the kids at all? What 15 year old wants to watch movies like this? I'm picturing a trailer of "There Will Be Blood" with the TikTok speech to text calling Daniel Plainview problematic or something.
@Sassy Tabasco absolutely! Tbh getting old is better than the alternative and when you're late 20s early 30s the cool thing is you are old enough to get A level of respect but not so old you no longer relate to the youths. Last year I started mentoring a teen girl. That's a thing I get to do because I have had 3 whole experiences. It's pretty dope tbh. My psychiatrist is 30 and she can finally start enjoying privileges of all her hard work. My bf and I met this year and are deeply in love and pretty compatible. It's hardly all good. I've had my fair share of bs but establish a fitness routine, learn how to eat to take care of your body, and love deeply and passionately and you'll have a blast
Hell I'm barely 23 and i feel the same way. Especially in tiktok where most of the young genz thinks anything above 20 is old and ancient. Brands or adverts are pandering to the wrong audience. Like i get the logic their logic, but they are going about it in the wrong way. Heck i only get to know about movies from either twitter or from trailers shown before other movies in the cinema.
literally i had no interest in seeing the fabelmans, until i saw a random scene on tiktok out of context that has nothing to do with much of the plot that some random person posted, but i was like i must see it, and i did and loved the movie. but i never would've given it a shot with just like the premise. i have watched entire tv shows because i saw a random scene on tiktok, it works, just don't force it
For me, this video already being “out of date” doesn’t even matter because I’ve never heard of this movie. I stay far away from tiktok so you’re my source of drama on there lmao Edit: also, most of gen z has seen the great gatsby so we 100% don’t need another movie about parties. We’ve seen more than enough in our English classes lol
I have seen it on a digital advertising screen on my city’s main station the other day (I’m not from the us). I don’t have TikTok and instagram anymore, and also RUclips premium, so I don’t really see ads online, and … the poster also didn’t catch me; reminded me of another series by the name Babylon Berlin which I desperately want to watch the new season of xD
similar to me as well! I don't have TikTok but consider myself online as well, I had never heard of this movie before and just now watched the trailer. I did watch the invitation the other day though and had also never heard of it before and just watched it because it was in the Netflix top 10. There is just so much media out there and content I can't imagine what its like to be an advertiser right now
I think it comes down to genuinely showing what you’re creating. You don’t need to “trick” us to come see a movie. Let us know up front what you made and we will decide if it’s our thing or not. 🤷🏻♀️
Honestly I think the best example of legitimately doing this kind of media outreach with influencers is stuff like the “Queens Who Like To Watch” series Netflix does with Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova. Obviously that’s a bit different bc it’s run by Netflix rather than just working with influencers on a case-by-case basis, but the model of “Let these entertainers react to this piece of media and use it to help drum up hype” clearly works for them - they wouldn’t keep doing it otherwise. There are a TON of Netflix originals that I had never heard of and had no interest in watching until they were reviewed by them, and then it made me want to actually watch them. Clips of them reacting to stuff like the first season of The Circle still circulate on TikTok and on Instagram reels and RUclips Shorts and all that good stuff.
“GenZ does not like being talked at. They dont like being told what to like and what not to like. Cause they’ll just prove to you that they don’t like that, or that they will stop liking that to prove a point.” This is such a good explanation of GenZ
tbh im so shocked that (as far as im aware) no movie studio has got in on tiktok editing yet. the amount of shows, movies, even songs ive seen blow up on tiktok bc people edited them is astounding. the one ive seen recently is beautiful boy - someone made an edit and loads of people are in the comments like 'i watched this movie bc of tiktok and it made me cry', stuff like that. honestly all they would need to do is release high quality scenepacks on youtube or whatever and let people go nuts, then theyve got a whole community of teenagers to essentially make little adverts for the movie FOR FREE!!!
I had literally no idea that that movie was about the transition from silent films to speakies. The advertising was so horrible I thought it was like a new age Great Gatsby.
Ive seen so many ads for Babylon. Not once did I think that Babylon was being marketed towards me, it was too vague in a lot of ways. I tried to figure out what it was about and then even after I found a synopsis it was so bare bones I just forgot about it. I need to know enough about what's happening in the movie so that I can not forget about it until I know what happens next. Or in other cases I need to be so immediately charmed by the characters personality and their interactions that I want to see more of them. I feel like they really just wanted to drag us in using the aesthetic of the film but that only really works when there aren't a ton of other films in the same aesthetic.
I thought it was some old party movie. I never went to see it because I only saw the party scenes and I never knew what it was about. But now knowing what it’s about actually sounds good.
same! all i saw was the party ad and i learned nothing about the plot so i wasn’t interested at all but now that i actually hear what it’s about it seems interesting
I saw it and I enjoyed it It’s not the best movie ever, but I had a really fun time watching it So yeah, I’d definitely suggest checking it out if you’re interested and have the time (because it is a suuupeeerr long movie) (There‘s also a very attractive queer woman in a suit in the movie, if you’re into that kind of thing ;) )
Im a film student and the only ads for this movie I saw were in theaters. I really wanted to see it, but completely forgot it was even coming out soon because I never saw anything else about it. Film bros might be the audience they were hoping for lol
@@n48_art as someone who quit Twitter a while ago (and spent good portions of my day just scrolling when I did use it!) let me just tell you: it gets easier with time, but at first it can feel very weird. hope everything goes well for you
I stopped using it in 2020 and it’s been the best. I watch a lot of friends use it more and I see how badly it effects them. Like y’all please you know it’s bad for you
@@FrancisFabricates i think a big part of it is fomo. i miss a good bit of references ab tiktoks and i feel like a grandma even tho i’m newly an adult😂
@@lamibonxd I just ask my younger friends of google it. The ao is proven to harm your brain, brain damage isn’t worth it to find our people are asking if under age girls have bubble gum pink junk like is the current trend. It’s a garbage fire
One thing that makes advertising on social media harder is as others have said social media has gotten so big and you can be on the same platform now and not come into contact with what other people consider popular/viral content. Whereas before everyone went to the same sources for entertainment or to find out what’s coming out like talk shows now not so much
Also, I don’t think it is said enough that not all of Gen-Z is on TikTok. I’m in college (so the older half of gen z) and I and so many of my friends don’t even use TikTok much, if at all. So by focusing most of their energy on TikTok, advertisers miss out on a decent sized portion of Gen-Z. And the portion of Gen-Z they miss out on are the people more likely to have money to spend on going to the movies.
This reminds me of Markipliers story of when he was at that red carpet event. Hollywood has such an ego that they just can't seem to understand how internet culture works.
@@athena2824 Mark's show on youtube, In Space with Markiplier, was nominated for an Emmy. He went to the red carpet for it, and none of the press really talked to him because he wasn't a Hollywood guy (if I'm recalling correctly). They didn't care about him or his show, and figured there wouldn't be an audience for interviews or content. Meanwhile, he can get hundreds of thousands of views online and has a massive fanbase, but traditional media doesn't recognize or validate that audience. Any interviews or information or pictures would have done really well in the online sphere, but Hollywood doesn't know, or doesn't care to know.
@@char_the_shark That sounds very old money vs new money, Gilded Age kind of thinking. Yet, Hollywood will try to pander to the younger generation and be confused when it doesn't work.
my main issue with Babylon is that Brad Pitt is in it. Also i didn't see a single ad for it anywhere on social media and I spent a lot of time there, I only saw the trailer in the cinema
Everything you're saying is so true. Like I'm a mid genz and I do not watch movie trailers. The only time I ever see them is during previews for movies, in theatres. Trailers mean nothing to me and the same can be said for the rest of my friends. What really gets us to watch movies are those insane edits on tiktok made with like capcut or Adobe. They're so much funnier and they actually showcase the best parts of the movie as apposed to all the shiny bits that 40 year olds will think we like.
"They could like this specific actor because they post dog pictures, or because they find them attractive." Amanda's really tokyo-drift dodging the feral fandom aspsect of it
I am horrified by how well Amanda did the Siri text to speech voice. Also, the random movies that blow up on TikTok tend to be crazily hyped. Like I remember Megan is Missing being hyped up to be the most terrifying thing ever on the platform. Then I saw the actual movie, and it was just plain bad lmao.
I watched the invitation with my mom, I was sitting there wishing she actually stayed with him and was a dark romance while my mom started telling me that’s why I should never travel for free with a man 🤣
I only saw that Margo Robbie scene as well on the advertisements, and I had no idea it was set in the 20s, her hair looks so 80s to me, and I'm over the 80s nostalgia. Not to judge costumes, but I may have looked into a bit more had that aspect been communicated in the ads
Hi! I actually have insight on 4:30 where you say that books are being written to go viral on tiktok. My parents are ghostwriters for though self published books on kindle, and you are completely right. Allot of people who publish those books are asking for that exact thing.
@@kbanks5754 It was a SUPER slow start, But they started on Upwork and basically didn't refuse any job. If someone wanted the most rancid erotica or a self help book preaching a topic they didn't believe in they took it and wrote it with passion for almost no pay. After a year or two of that they built up a reputation, or at least as much as a ghost writer can have and were able to slowly raise prices to a livable wage and start being able to refuse the really horrible jobs. Thats really the abridged version, But thats basically what they did.
@@pujwujforever That checks out, freelance editing has been that way as well. So much respect for their determination and work ethic. Thank you for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it!
I straight up watched The Invitation, in a theater, because I was Influenced™️ by a TikTok, from someone who saw it and talked about how the marketing was bad and the movie was better than it portrayed. It's almost a "you'll be one of the first to actually enjoy this movie - save it from a bad marketing strategy"
I'm 28 and I did not know any of these movies. I literally never know what movies are in theaters or what new shows are on netflix. Maybe it is because I've done everything I can to avoid ads and it is too expensive to go to theaters... but I never see movie ads. I don't have cable or tiktok, so I feel like I miss out on all the things coming out. Lately my idea was that streaming places need an "E3" or something like that, maybe quarterly that are just like "these shows are coming out and these ones are leaving"
The movie M3GAN keeps showing me the scene where that android girl crawls on all fours and it... just.. looks SO GOOFY and then they cut to her dancing??? I work at a movie theater so i can see it for free, but i only want to because it looks so bad... I would not pay money to see it.
The sad thing is, if a lot of these companies and individuals advertised more genuinely, they might be able to grab an audience that would at least like the work more or that it'd have more of a lasting effect on. There are so many movies I ended up adoring but avoided for years because the advertising sucked or was dishonest/too pandering. I think we're in a time where people value honesty more and are quick to call out advertisers that are just outright lying or being too gimmicky, so I think a lot of advertisers would do well to understand that. That being said I also agree with the points you made at the end of the video.
I feel like the new Matilda movie had good TikTok marketing like there was a whole trend to do the revolting children dance. I personally didn’t find it because of TikTok (I’m already obsessed so I found out pretty fast) but I know a lot of people who found it on TikTok.
I loved not knowing anything about The Invitation, and finding out in the spot that it was a vampire movie. It made for very good at home entertainment.
i only get ads when i’m on my phone, and the only ads that really stick in my brain are yt ads, and i didn’t even know babylon was a thing until i showed an irl friend the barbie movie trailer, started talking about margot robbie and how badly her new film (babylon) was flopping. i was living in a major city and didn’t even see a bus stop poster for this film. did they even market the film outside of tiktok??? either they didn’t or they didn’t bother to market the film in the country the lead actress is from
I was the same with The Invitation. I had no idea it was about vampires until I started watching it. Also agree that going to the movies is a luxury for me as I don't make much money & have to make sure I have enough for rent, bills and groceries, so I try to wait to see movies when the DVDs get to my local library where I can watch them for free. Babylon is one I will watch eventually mostly due to Margo Robbie being an amazing actress who I will watch pretty much whatever she is in.
I’ve been noticing recent big budget movie ads just say what actors are in it and that it’s a “spectacle” or a “thrillride” or something. Also “only in theaters.” It feels like they’re dangling pretty things in front of my face and expecting that to be enough not only to watch the movie but to deal with all the theater crap to see it. Times have changed, folks.
YOU know what we want, why arent we hiring you? as a gen z-er you explained it perfectly I like keanu reeves so ill go see his movies but he's not mt favourite actor I just respect his talent, I also loved will smith before he became a youtuber
I specifically watch your videos bc after watching more and more of your content, I was convinced you were being genuine. It must just be by chance but the first at 10 videos or so of yours I watched you didn’t mentioned how you’re specifically very honestly about your opinions. This was something I picked up on myself. I enjoy hearing what you have to say! Love your videos :)
I'm a big movie person, and I didn't bother with Babylon. There have been several mediocre films lately where all they do is throw the talented cast in your face the entire trailer to distract from a lackluster story. Even if it doesn't apply to this movie, that's all it makes me think about.
On advertising in general online: I came from a time of the internet where if there was an Ad *anywhere* on the site you were told to not click it because it could be a virus. Pop-up ads were especially infamous for this. On advertising on tiktok: Youre so right. People like hearing people infodump and talk about anything. We want to see what is the movie about? Who's in it? What makes your movie different from another movie? We have limited money. I will watch, and have watched, hour long reviews on media (including a 12 hour video on a video game thats not available in english) I dont want to see a meme in an ad. Its not funny, and we've moved on from the meme by then because the life of a meme lasts 1 day.
I saw the trailer for this before The Lost City in March. . . And never saw another ad. I'm a millennial that's not on the clock app. I wanted to see this movie, but forgot about it in the 9 months between that single trailer I saw and when it came out. They definitely don't market to me anymore. Thanks for all your insights.
Babylon isn’t even released in my country’s theaters yet, the premiere is on next week’s Friday here 😂 I didn’t plan on seeing it in theaters, but this made me curious to go see it
I'm a 26 year old avid internet user. I'm on youtube, tiktok, reddit daily. I'm not exaggerating when I say I have never heard of this film. I've never seen an ad, a comment, a passing mention. This video is my first interaction hearing about it and I find that fascinating.
The only time I saw ads for Babylon were in the movie theater before other films I was seeing. I was intrigued because "Brad Pitt being goofy" is one of my favorite movie tropes, but I didn't see anyone saying anything good about the film or literally even talking about it at all, so I was hesitant to waste my time on it (time, not money, because I also have AMC movie pass lol). I may go see it now though based on what you said about it.
100% agree with this all. I have no clue what this movie is, but I respect your opinion far more than a random movie critic, so now I know not to waste my time. I can relate more when I can put a face to the opinion, and its why I trust you to be telling me the truth about things like movies or products. If a studio tries telling me that their movie is good, I'm immediately going to distrust them and anyone related to them, because I know that they're lying. So thanks for being honest with us, its a nice change of pace.
I didn’t even know Babylon was a movie. I used to see movies all the time because I love dissecting character choices, themes and plots. Nowadays, I’ve been watching things that make me feel nostalgic. I’d love a movie that hits that nostalgic note while being a new movie because I don’t think my roommates will let me watch Hunger Games again.
I think the soundstage scene was great, but would have been nearly impossible to put on TikTok because it's so long and it relies so much on the slow burn of the whole thing. Honestly, the hook that would have helped Babylon would have been to do some info seeding. Have some BookTok accounts talk about Kenneth Anger's book Hollywood Babylon (so people can then go see how this movie did and didn't lift elements from the book), have some FilmBro accounts start diving into how weird and limiting the technical changes of the early sound era were, so people would be curious about a movie showing those things. In the last DefunctLand video, they talk to a Disney Channel executive who gives an anecdote about how they were promoting the movie Finding Nemo. While the film was still in production, they started adding "fish facts" bumpers before and after commercials. Just interesting little bits of information about fish, seemingly unrelated to anything. The idea was to just get kids thinking about how cool fish were, so that months later when the Finding Nemo trailer dropped, the audience was already primed. That really feels like a niche where TikTok would be perfect.
this isn't a diss lol but you're my comfort youtuber and I listen to your vids for background sound or to fall asleep a lot. I've watched this video 6 times and now a 7th bc I fell asleep to it every time 😂
I couldn't agree with you more, especially on booktok. As a writer who aspires to be published, the current marketing climate makes me nervous, because I don't know how to use TikTok (old millennial here) and don't know how to market to today's generation. I'm focused on writing good stories, not something weird enough or scandalous enough to go viral.
As a cusper (or young millennial whichever) I'm right there with you as a writer. The marketing landscape is scary and being an author as a brand seems so gimmicky, and even though I'm younger, I feel too old to keep up cause it seems to be changing so fast
Ill be honest i had no idea babylon was a movie that existed, like i hear the name i keep thinking that horror movie barbarian. I genuinely had to look up the wikipedia page for it to understand what amanda was talking about 💀💀💀
Instagram movie ads have taken a really odd approach too. Every ad I’ve seen for a movie on there in the past year or so has just been a really long trailer that basically gives the entire plot and climax away. Then all the comments are something along the lines of “thanks, now I don’t have to go and see this!”
So I never knew the full plot of Babylon, and in all honesty, for me, it gave the idea of "giant party and everyone there wants to have sex and does drugs but in the 1920s", the ads I got were very odd and didn't make sense. Movie creators I enjoy are Kennie JD, Amanda The Jedi and Mista GG. They all do varying movie content, but it's fun and keeps you engaged!
It's funny seeing this as a millennial and remembering how "Millennials are killing everything" headlines were a thing for a while, with news outlets forgetting that Millennials at that point were around 30 years old, but we were still being referred to like Millennial = teenager. Now Gen-Z is in that phase of people acting like they are all 12 year olds when some are hitting their mid-20's, so no wonder Gen-Z aren't interested in childish advertising, half of them aren't even children anymore.
One of my favorite film critics on RUclips is Dan Murrell, he used to work with Screen Junkies but now he has his own channel where he releases reviews and even tracks/analyzes the weekly box office! He's really fair in his reviews and he's about as close to unbiased as a film critic can be, so he's definitely worth a subscription!
im 17, and the movies i saw in theaters most recently were skinamarink, bones and all, and puss in boots: the last wish. i didn't see ads for any of them, i chose to watch them based on word of mouth from close friends, unsponsored tweets, and instagram edits. my generation is susceptible to advertisement, but we are not interested in movie stars or flashy trailers.
I watched and loved the menu and glass onion but both were on streaming, GO was an anticipated sequel with an amazing cast and they both had very interesting behind the scenes features and interviews they released on TikTok before the movies came out
My aunt literally did not think that Glass onion was the real sequel because she knew it was going into theaters and she wanted to see it in theaters. however, they were only in theaters for like a week before moving to streaming only .
Tiktok ads suck in general - especially the RUclips ones - they can't use licensed music so it's some weird laughing audio or royalty free music with a random video.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Tik tok ad for a new movie that I’ve actually went to see. I’ve seen reviews of old movies and have definitely went and watched that movie
Another thing, I think it was about Babylon - there was something about the director or something, and people were wondering why everyone was willing to work on the project. Maybe I'm wrong. But that's something that would make me hesitant to support it, plus people have no theatre etiquette.
When I saw your video on “The Invitation”, I had never heard of it before then. This is also true for this movie. Never heard of it, of course I kinda live under a rock. I barely use tik tok. However, I do spend a great deal of time here on RUclips. But I do love hearing your film reviews, we tend to share the same opinions.😉
On god I don't even really hear about movie's coming out anymore. I have exactly 0 patience for ads, especially ad's that try to be clever through stupid methods. If the universe wills it then I will hear about a movie through a friend or youtuber, but otherwise...
I literally only ever saw the nipple icing scene for an ad, and man, that gave me nothing to latch on to that would make me even remember the movie being a thing, let alone interest me enough to remeber a release date and buy a ticket. No idea what it was supposed to be about, the setting, the characters, no clue why I should care, based on that ad
Watching your video has made me so happy that I don’t have TikTok. I just went to see Babylon yesterday I really enjoyed it for the most part but if I had gotten the ads that you are talking about instead I would not have gone. I did not enjoy that beginning party sequence so I would not have gone if that is what I had been shown
I think when it comes to booktok and many suggestive/reccomendation communities in tiktoks they fall into alot of categories of projecting too much into their "advertisements", and like you've mentioned on 4:00 it often times feels like they are so blinded by their love of the sources or even trends that they start filling their own fantasies into the narrative to make the original sources seems more interesting? Kind of? So yes, "false advertisement-ish" which is definitely severe on some booktokers as their reccomendations are if not often bad or just... straight-up toxic??
I mean this very literally: it's fanfic brain. It's seeing the potential of a story (whether it has merit or not, actually it's stronger the weaker the narrative) and filling in the blanks or adding what was almost there.
@@Kayla_P99 Now I'm wondering what's Amanda' take on the new Avatar: the way of water movie since it seems like a mix review in general but going back to the 'fanfic' mindset, Avatar has def been one of the sources that has revived the thrill in self-insert and fanfictions as a whole after well 13 years, maybe not as much yet but I've seen plenty of shipping fics already 👀 between the Navis and readers...
I only saw Babylon ads on cable tv and I learned more about what the movie is about from this than I did from their own ads but I still know nothing that makes me want to see it😂
I actually remember seeing a trailer for Babylon and thinking it looked interesting but also looking up what it was about because the trailer told me NOTHING in that regard
At the end of the day when it comes to movie advertising, nothing beats a 15 year old with Adobe after affects procrastinating on a school deadline. LIKE THOSE EDITS are better than any tiktok
no joke, if i needed a movie trailer made, I would probably hire those 15 year olds who make phenomenal breaking bad edits LMAO
The way that more edits have convinced me to watch movies than any trailers ever have
The editing girlies have gotten me to watch so many more movies and shows than official trailers ever have
Reminds me of when Pixar advertised Brave as an action/war movie when it was actually a “mother and daughter need to wear the getting along shirt movie” and then was surprised when everyone hated it
This is part of the reason why the new Mulan movie failed.
@@elisyasinea1727 also its funny how they want to be realistic but then add elements like chi & a witch lol.
...And a fun action movie at that. Sigh.
Brave was underwhelming af!! I was so hype for Merida!
💯💯💯
Even back then they needed to go on other shows, “press tour” is the name for actors/filmmakers who do this, it’s certainly worse than before
I honestly love that, but not the oblivious part.
Seriously. I haven’t seen an ad for a movie or show in months. It’s not my preferred media, so the algorithms don’t show me it.
Yes, the hallway dance scene was the best marketing for this movie!
I feel like the creators of m3gan are more dialed in to the current culture and current social anxieties than any movie I've seen in a while
I haven't gone to watch M3GAN but I saw the trailer while I was on either this site or twitch.
The price of death and how much people are pushed to believe a fancy funeral will make everyone feel better and how the industry preys on grieving people it needs to be talked about more
There is a great RUclips channel that talks about the death industry and how funerals are super expensive called “Ask a Mortician”.
sorry about the late response but unfortunately that costs money too i think... and you'd definitely need a pass of some sort, if you can even get one
As a Gen Z-er, I feel like our generation tends to like movies that don’t take themselves too seriously but at the same time we want movies that take themselves seriously without being obvious that they’re trying too hard
The exact reason "everything everywhere all at once" did so well
@@tom_j. exactly the movie I thought of in response. GenX / Boomer cusp here. We aren’t all clueless about Gen Z.
As a fellow Gen Z-er, that basically sums it up😂
I’m an early millennial being born in 84 and I remember the when celebrities weren’t as accessible as they can be now cause of no form of social media until the creation of MySpace so getting something like an autograph was a rare occurrence but now with social media we can see where a celebrity could be through social media posts cause my generation along with gen z have become over sharers on social media
Yes!!!! Exactly! I watched it because of him, he made it sound so good, in my opinion!
I almost watched because of him lol

It would be random 'badass' edits or 'plot twist' edits and that's how people would learn about new characters and shows
A note on the demographic that would have gone to see this movie:
I think that's me.
Oh man no comment is me more than this one. I'm 32 in March XD
BTW you don't know how great your 30s will be till you're there. Soon to be welcome

I stay far away from tiktok so you’re my source of drama on there lmao
Edit: also, most of gen z has seen the great gatsby so we 100% don’t need another movie about parties. We’ve seen more than enough in our English classes lol
I’d never heard of it either and I’m chronically online… minus Tiktok! Interesting to think about
I have seen it on a digital advertising screen on my city’s main station the other day (I’m not from the us).
There is just so much media out there and content I can't imagine what its like to be an advertiser right now
I’d never heard of it either…
Babylon is not about parties. It's a love letter to cinema. And it was amazing
I think it comes down to genuinely showing what you’re creating. You don’t need to “trick” us to come see a movie. Let us know up front what you made and we will decide if it’s our thing or not. 🤷🏻♀️
This right here. I’m tried of being “tricked” into seeing something. I don’t need that. Just show me.
Cause they’ll just prove to you that they don’t like that, or that they will stop liking that to prove a point.”
This is such a good explanation of GenZ
tbh im so shocked that (as far as im aware) no movie studio has got in on tiktok editing yet. the amount of shows, movies, even songs ive seen blow up on tiktok bc people edited them is astounding. the one ive seen recently is beautiful boy - someone made an edit and loads of people are in the comments like 'i watched this movie bc of tiktok and it made me cry', stuff like that. honestly all they would need to do is release high quality scenepacks on youtube or whatever and let people go nuts, then theyve got a whole community of teenagers to essentially make little adverts for the movie FOR FREE!!!
I saw it and I enjoyed it
It’s not the best movie ever, but I had a really fun time watching it
So yeah, I’d definitely suggest checking it out if you’re interested and have the time (because it is a suuupeeerr long movie)

Really good points!! I really enjoyed the invitation and it is a fun watch but it has been advertised terrible
This reminds me of Markipliers story of when he was at that red carpet event. Hollywood has such an ego that they just can't seem to understand how internet culture works.

Promoters just need to hire teens with editing programs dude that's the shit that always draws me into content
Amanda The Jedi, Real Queen of Horror, and Possessed By Horror are pretty solid reviewers who's opinions I generally trust
Spookyastronauts is another good channel who is also honest in her film reviews.
"Like all hot girls I have stomach issues."

They don't understand that we don't watch the adds, especially when they look like adds. Also, I love it when you talk about movies you love!!
Thanks!
Treating us like our attention spans are so short will only make them shorter and they'll blame us for it.
I will watch, and have watched, hour long reviews on media (including a 12 hour video on a video game thats not available in english)
I dont want to see a meme in an ad. Its not funny, and we've moved on from the meme by then because the life of a meme lasts 1 day.
I had never heard about Babylon until I saw someone on Twitter go "Why aren't people watching it?"
The new Indiana jones hits those notes pretty well, much better than the crystal skull and with a lot of call backs to the originals
I've watched this video 6 times and now a 7th bc I fell asleep to it every time 😂
Me too 😭 😂
I couldn't agree with you more, especially on booktok.
Started watching swell like a few months ago and now it's my favorite 😍
I’d never heard of this movie, but it sounds cool when you describe your idea for an ad! 🤷🏼♀️
I don't have tiktok and I didn't know about this movie. I let tiktok culture trickle down through Amandas videos.
A few people have said it already, but I'll preach to the choir: TikTok sucks in general.
I think she doesn't include them to avoid getting a copyright striked
hearing that AG1 tastes like green liquorice makes all the SomeMoreNews ads make so much sense
Their marketing was so bad that i, a gen z samara weaving super stan, never saw ad with her in it, i didnt even know she was in this movie!!
"BONUS POINTS IF YOU'RE HOT." Honesty! Honesty is why we come to this channel!
The only ad where I believe they did a great job promoting the film on TikTok was for the movie Smile. The movie was good too!
"I don't like wasted potential" *reaches my full potential to be your friend*
im 17, and the movies i saw in theaters most recently were skinamarink, bones and all, and puss in boots: the last wish. i didn't see ads for any of them, i chose to watch them based on word of mouth from close friends, unsponsored tweets, and instagram edits. my generation is susceptible to advertisement, but we are not interested in movie stars or flashy trailers.
The tik tok voice impersonation was great loll
Tiktok ads suck in general - especially the RUclips ones - they can't use licensed music so it's some weird laughing audio or royalty free music with a random video.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Tik tok ad for a new movie that I’ve actually went to see. I’ve seen reviews of old movies and have definitely went and watched that movie
Another thing, I think it was about Babylon - there was something about the director or something, and people were wondering why everyone was willing to work on the project. Maybe I'm wrong. But that's something that would make me hesitant to support it, plus people have no theatre etiquette.
This is the 1st I'm hearing anything about this movie. I had no idea it was coming out.
Man, she did an amazing job mimicking the robot voice on tiktok lol
I’m so glad I haven’t downloaded TikTok.
I'm so glad I deleted it! There's nothing value-add on there.
I'm so glad tik tok is ban here in hong kong
I’m so glad I deleted it. Life has so much more meaning without it 🙃
Same
Oooop Tiktok makes me happy and it depends on what you choose to consume. I find ton of value
All of the film buffs at work were talking about how great Babylon is and I had never even heard of it
In terms of other movies review channels on RUclips, I love Kennie JD
