Spider-Man is a brilliant creation. You don't have to be a white kid to relate to Peter Parker. You don't have to be black/Latino to understand Mile Morales. Their struggles and triumphs are universal and span a whole crazy SpiderVerse
"Spider-Man is a brilliant creation. You don't have to be a white kid to relate to Peter Parker" actually... it used to be like this "You don't have to be black/Latino to understand Mile Morales" if you are a new reader, if you are a reader in your forties you stick to the original
@@AdissapointedSonic too bad apparently I'm probably the only one left who wants Peter to still wear the mask considering how many of you are turning your back on him for Miles, "everyone can wear the mask"? so why don't you care about the one who wore it first?
I dealt with an idiot in the IGN comment section that still thought because the Mario movie outgrossed Spiderverse, that going woke still equals going broke. It doesnt matter how many of these success stories you throw at these people, theyre just going to be blissfully ignorant no matter what 🙄
Kinda funny because before the Mario movie released these MFs kept saying it was gonna be a woke flop because Princess Peach was too covered up... Wish I was joking
Lol 😂 ign comment and rotten tomatoes are the worst literally read some comments said he didn’t see it but just wanted the ratings down so he give it a 1 star, some don’t like that miles is getting recognition or that Peter is barely in the movie even though it’s miles and Gwen movie 😂
Woke is whatever the far right hates. Everyone with a thinking brain judges movies based on how good or bad they are from the writing, acting, special effects etc... Most people don't care what gender, color, sex are in a movie.
the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Barbie have been widely referred to as "woke". some have also put Zootopia, Beauty and the Beast (2017), Aladdin (2019), and Frozen 2 in that same category. they all grossed over a billion at the worldwide box office
Peter B. Parker becomes the most in tune and intelligent of the side characters, achieving his goals with minimum effort. The goofing is just a trait, but his role is critical and dignified. He is a worthy Sege/Mentor figure for Miles/Gwen, and yet, people only see 'woke took another white victim'.
As far as I know, Peter has always been a little bit goofy. He'd throw quips in fights and make the occasional bad jokes. In some stories he does it more than others but it's still there.
Yep. Woke and anti woke are often too sides of the same coin. Nuanced storytelling and characters is lost on them, they're to busy looking for agendas to comprehend what the movie is trying to show them.
Plus he’s likable, admirable, we know about and see his home life, and we saw his arc. This isn’t a reverse magical negro where he exists solely to prop up Miles and never gets his own story. He’s a fully fleshed out character, he’s just not the main one so people lost it.
Thank you! Black people don’t even use ”woke” anymore. And it original meant (when my folks and I used it in the 90s and 00s) to mean “hey, let’s ALL realize who’s keeping us divided and be for the people”.
Best comment here. Just want a good film. Spider verse has diversity but darn it, it is a great film that left you wanting more because of how good it was.
People that yell the word woke are so hilarious. Its like they're infatuated with the concept of "woke" even if they use it in the wrong connotation. I've seen so many of my favorite RUclipsrs go into movies looking for something to be woke. I'm glad this movie encapsulates everything they consider to be woke yet is getting rave reviews.
They prioritized telling a good story over checking boxes, and that's why the anti-woke crowd likes it despite having "woke" aspects. You can have woke with a good story, but if you make woke the story it won't work.
I kinda disagree with Korey here it's not that it's "not forced" it's that the writers room was clearly made up of different voices. As someone in the creative industry. A lot of the media you consumer ain't made by people with melanin. Even now companies are only now starting to here other voices or put SOME minorities in positions of power. I'd say spiderman constantly addresses race. Miles existence being called a mistake and him flat out rejecting that in one of the coldest lines "nah imma do my own thing" is straight up telling the audience that are trying to pigeon whole Miles and the blackness he represents. Even that speech from his mom telling him "You're gonna have people tell you do don't belong, but you do" It's well written cause it's clear the writers room is allowed to say this. I actually wrote a paper on diversity and profitability for my management post grad there's a lot more on this topic. Diversity is generally good but more importantly (to companies) its extremely profitable. There's a lot to unpack but its also nefarious that black art isn't allowed to fail like white art is all the time. Ridley Scotts last movie bombed but nobody is saying "Go white , goodnight" it's white supremacy at its finest to judge art with diverse groups who have historically not been allowed to even make art at such a ridiculously high standard. What's worse is people will still hate it even if it's great. Shout-out Korey. This mot even really a disagreement more just a slight critique of the framing. Peace and love
According to Box Office Mojo, AtSV only got knocked off #1 domestic because The Flash and Elemental debuted midweek and within a week it was back at #1. Elemental knocked it back to 2nd and then Indy knocked it to 3rd, but as of July 3, a month after its debut, it's holding steady at 2nd place and hasn't dropped lower than 3rd place no matter what debuted. And that's just domestic - it's made over 600 million worldwide, over half of that in the US. It is an unqualified success. People rooting for its failure or thinking that it wouldn't succeed where the original did will ignore this, but it's a total repudiation of the idea that diversity in cinema is a losing bet.
When movies does race swap but don’t even try to make the character unique or the plot intriguing it will flop look at little mermaid, a lot of fans hated miles morales but I saw some saying that they liked that he became his own character.
@HeroCreator - the Disney remakes lose money because they're lame ducks, not because of race swapping. They cost too much and they saturate the market with stuff we've already seen before.
@@GladwinAbel I'm talking just domestic box office. If we're talking worldwide then Guardians 3 and Fast X are ahead of it too. But Spiderverse doing extremely well domestically. Only other movie i think could potentially knock it off of 2nd place this year is maybe Mission Impossible.
its used in jest, not that hard to pick up. its sarcasm. you wanna know what word people use alot that they seemingly dont understand? tolerant, people should really understand that word a lil better before using it
What do you think is the correct meaning? Right now it is used in a valid way which is why Diversity chief of Disney, Netflix and Warner were fired recently.
when miles morales first debuted in the comics world people said the same shit about him that they say about the little mermaid. It took several strong storylines in the comics movies and games to get people to accept him.
Very true, been reading Spidey since the 80s and had a massive fallout with a good friend who couldn't accept that 'his Spidey' was 'replaced' by Miles. For me, Miles was just the next Spider-Man. Then again, I liked Ben Reilly and Mayday Parker, so maybe I just wasn't that stuck on Peter Parker.
Nah the writers love the character and he is a interesting character his family, his origin, his bond with Peter. They really showed us that woke character can be great.
and even then he's still in that same box of non growth, cause no one knows what to do with him, same enemies, town and stories as peter cause he really is pointless and that's a sad truth
19:31 the recent exception to this would be Puss in Boots: The last wish; bad first movie, excellent second movie that did well financially. I think ultimately people don’t really care, they’ll watch anything as long as enough good word of mouth builds up. Doesn’t matter if it’s a sequel, remake, soft reboot, new IP etc…Politics also doesn’t matter in the end of the day if the foundation of the story and characters are strong enough. Netflix’s Nimona is imo another good recent example.
It’s like most moviegoers in the real world don’t give a shit about what’s “woke” or not, and people who spend all their time on the internet think that “woke” is some kind of meaningful criticism that anybody actually invests in when watching media when nobody whose opinion matters does.
So people who call out products that do deserve it by going woke and ruining established media not valid opinions? Not heard anyone moan about Spiderman tbh. but to make yourself try sound superior by claiming everyone who claims woke isn't valid to listen too is actually incredibly dense and is the reason majority of media is shit now
And those guys mean “woke” I believe that he’s in the wrong terminology. (Also sidenote I really hate how that word got co-opted to just means diversity smh). Now back to the actual point, what they should say is not having messages shove down your throat. Make your messaging intertwine with your story. Every story with messages shouldn’t be handled how it is in our world. Because it gets tiring and stale. Look at the trend in the 80s and early 90s. With the American action muscled up hero. Some of them had way too many messaging shut down your throat. The ones that didn’t were huge successes and written good
I agree with both above comments, but I’ll add that the “woke” critique a lot of times comes from a bad faith perspective, veiling bigotry and intolerance in what people think is criticism. Like OP said, anybody who has an educated opinion can see right through it.
Miles Morales isn't a black Peter Parker. He's has his own original story and his own problem to overcome. More people would be angry if they make Peter Parker into someone else just for the sake of DiVeRsiTy.
I have never understood people that say "Go woke, go broke." It seems more like the people that say that are coping. There is more talk and depiction of diversity now than pretty much ever and so many of these huge companies like Disney and such are being more open and consistent with depicting multiple cultures, skin colors, and sexual orientations. It makes no sense that the inclusion would be making people go broke. I actually think it is the opposite. Where are all the opposite of woke movies, shows, games, etc. being so successful? I say bigots get broke.
The most recent one they claim that's "not-woke" and successful is The Mario Movie. And keep in mind, a bunch of people were complaining about it being"woke" before release.
@@kylegathright Didn't they make Peach a strong female character in the movie when Peach has usually been the damsel in distress in the Mario games? Also, didn't it include a drag scene when one of the male characters dressed up as Peach?
The difference between this is because the diversity is the major point of the spiderman universe there are many kinds of spiderman which gives everyone their version of spiderman
"People fear what they don't understand." Nah, fear's got nothing to do with it. People assume 'the other' will take what's theirs. Any slight power boost 'the other' receives, people will see it as a challenge for their status, jobs, etc.
@budgiecat2885 Blackwashing characters, randomly segregating stuff like CHAZ "White-Out" segregated mourning or the UC Berkley "POC house", telling the manager at Starbucks to fire any White employee regardless of whether he or she did anything wrong, and then firing her when she refuses, etc.
"People fear what they don't understand." no I simply care about what I like and I like Peter not Miles "People assume 'the other' will take what's theirs." why isn't it like this? just look at how they are reducing the original "Any slight power boost 'the other' receives, people will see it as a challenge for their status" no in Miles' case the power boosts are just to make him look better than the original
All the characters in Spider-Verse are likable and feel real first. Ethnicity and sexual orientation are elements of a character, they shouldn't be the defining aspects of one!
The crazy thing is that most of the time, these characters ARE written to be more than just their ethnicity and sexual orientation, but the "anti-woke" crowd ONLY sees them as that thing. The ones who complain most about identity politics are almost always the same people who throw a fit when a minority gets cast into a traditionally white role. Or when they have to see two queer characters share a kiss for 3 seconds.
@@SymbiSpideyexactly, hell even the Little Mermaid has literally zero to do with her race. She just happened to be the best singer for the job. But "meritocracy" never applies when black or brown people are picked for a role.
The "woke" aspect isnt distracting and its not part of the story. Miles motivation for being spiderman isnt racial injustice, gwen isnt giving monologs on trans rights. The creators are smart. They know not shove that stuff in your face and polarize their audience.
I mean, that hasn't stopped ppl from complaining about "wokeness" before, people will call things woke based on the demographics of the cast alone even if the actual content isn't political in any way.
@@thestraypeople will call out walk things based on demographic if that's the only reason that demographic was picked. It's about being organic to the film, if we have to stop the plot to point it out or market it as such, that's throws people off.
But in fairness the Little Metmaid didn't complain about being black, the female character didn't talk about being a woman and the Flash didn't insist on being called them. The film just wasn't written well.
Woke is whatever the far right hates, that's all it is. The movie is good because it's well written etc... All the movies that those people complain are "woke" and then bomb at the box office, isn't because of being "woke" its cause they were bad movies from the start.
Wrong majority of the time that statement is actually true when diversity and this #metoo movement is forced we see time and time again movies fail the reason why this movie is successful because it respects the source material and the pandering isn't forced the story isn't over saturated with political messaging.
wrong, go woke go broke has been proven, but when things are written properly and them being black or gay isn't their entire personality and when they aren't race swapping people then it will do well, I can bet if they race swapped Peter Parker people would hate this movie
Most the get woke go broke crowd just wants good storytelling and not have tasteless messaging in media, if anything accusing fans of “bigotry” as a cheap defence against genuine criticism is the real problem
@@NMbones98 Correct. The people I listen to, like Geeks and Gamers and Nerdrotic have never had any issues with natural diversity. It's the shoving of agendas down peoples throats that they hate. We had diversity in film for years. For example, Rush Hour came out in 1998 and it starred a black man and a Chinese man. No one was complaining about that. But it recent years, these film makers feel like they have to shove talking points in your face and lecture you. That's why Rings of Power was poor and why Cobra Kai is great.
People who say something is "forced" on them sound truly stupid. Nothing is forced on you in terms of entertainment. Watch it if you like it, and don't if you don't. It's not that hard.
People that use the “TOO WOKE” argument are idiots. By their moronic logic Aliens would be “Too Woke” because it’s a strong female lead in an movie with an anti corporate message with a couple of strong females out last 90% of the trained male marines… but because they grew up with that movie being one of the greatest movies of all time. (Which is is) they don’t say anything. Then a movie like Prey comes out and it’s “WOKE” Ripley is a more of a Mary Sue than Naru was in Prey and has more plot armor too like the way she just casually walks into the Queen’s hive lair and leaves with Newt like it’s no big deal while both Alien movies made Xenomorphs the perfect killing machines that sneak up on you. Atleast in Prey the plot armor parts were all established Predator lore, they don’t kill the nonviolent/unarmed and they can only see heat. A good movie is a good movie regardless with any social messaging that’s in it. Yes you can say there are alot of bad Hollywood movies that tailor to a certain audience but at the end of the day it’s bad because it’s a bad fucking movie not because of the messaging
Oh they will point to Ripley being best example of a strong female character, but let's be honest if those movies were made today these will shitting on Ripley for those in addition to calling her a man cause she looks like a normal woman.
wrong on so many points even this movie for its praise could still be said to be especially preggo spider-woman that's there for a cheap "girl no matter what state can do it too" its a terrible lesson to give to pregnancy as not important to stop doing what you're doing - and not the first time media has done it, its becoming a pattern way too often Alien isn't cause it isn't about sue Ripley being invincible or infalliable, Prey Naru is outright, complaining all the way while everyone dies by her stupidity and is rewarded by the end as a "told you so" look on her face as all their tribesmen are dead and the predators come back for round 2
@@marcusclark1339 1) I can barely understand the first half of your comment. 2) No if these losers were actually consistent they would be shitting on Alien, but because it's a beloved well made classic they would look really stupid if they tried that "woke whining" on it.
I loved Pavitr in the movie. I definitely feel like he gives Indian children the sign of: “You can be a hero no matter what culture you’re from.” And I’m glad they put him in there because he was great.😁😁😁💙💙💙❤️❤️❤️
In my perspective, lots of people use Go Woke Go Broke to push bigot politics. While there are people that want representation to be more well integrated or not used as cash grabs, there are TONS of other people that just don't want to see gays on screen. Go Woke Go Broke is confusing because multiple kinds of people are loud about pushing the movement.
Not only that but like 95% of the media stuff that they say "Go woke go broke" are all commercial successes. Captain Marvel, a dull MCU movie which broke the brains of many anti-SJW chuds, grossed over $1 billion. The people who constantly chant that mantra are utter clowns.

This movie and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 prove that people aren't sick of superhero movies; they're sick of thoughtless, formulaic superhero movies.
The only thing I like from guardians was the rocket story. I'm tired of the MCU jokes. Spider-Man on the other hand, it's animated in it feels different.
13:10 I disagree Corey, if what you say is true then nobody would have had a problem with Finn in Star Wars being the comedic relief. When most if not all of the credible criticisms of Star wars noted the poor treatment of Finn, who was in an amazing position to be an amazing co lead but was unanimously thought to be wasted and just on screen as the token black guy which even he admitted. All we were asking for is respect to be shown to these characters. Black Widow is arguably loved by all Marvel fans but her movie was 📉.
You make a very good point. But Corey is talking about the history of how black actors are portrayed in films starting in the early 20th century in relation to white characters. I believe that was the angle Corey was coming from; showing black characters as foolish, stupid, cowardly, etc etc which did not relate to the reality of where those black actors were raised. I believe that was the trigger for his point.
@@milesfolley6840 valid criticisms but we're 100 years on from those times, black, brown and female actors are considered just as capable now. This is what Disney is saying about the negative reviews of their movies but is really a marketing tactic to tar all the valid critiques with the racist ones. Corey is speaking but all I hear is the Disney corporation.
People were horriible about Finn existing before he was revealed to be the comedy relief. Did you forget about the mountains of racist backlassh he recieved by being the main focus of the first trailer to TFA? It was always race.

I feel like it doesn't. Having a diverse cast doesn't mean it's woke. That's part of the problem. When people complain about things being woke it's not understood so when people have an original story with a diverse cast people are like "see being woke is ok". That's not the complaint. The complaint is changing races of established characters, making characters up just for the sake of diversity and shoving gay people in movies just to say "were with you". Having characters that just happen to be diverse and nuance isn't woke. No one had an issue with movies like terminator 2 or avengers because the cast wasn't based on diversity it was based on good story telling. Making sure that male/female black or white that the story came first. If anything it proves there point. A good story is a good story. Focus on story first and diversity second

Cory, it’s not that it’s diverse. It’s that most movies are sh*t now, most with obnoxious marketing attached to them too. This was genuinely good, and people love it.The absolute opposite of everything Disney are doing these days.
There is no such thing as "go woke, go broke". It's literally just black people and other underrepresented groups who we rarely see in the front or on screen in general being the focus. That's it. Spiderverse is not the only example of this working, The Little Mermaid is currently behind it for the first month of the summer competition and that's with backlash and being a disney live action. The truth is, black people and black led films have been a powerhouse at the box office with audiences for the last half decade and that's been the way since 2018. It only feels and sounds like there's an "issue" bc the loudest detractors are people who just are so used to discrediting black people in general that when it happens it has to be something tactical and not just them being a boxoffice draw.
Generally sound comments but in the Ghostbusters, the black woman was seen as a comic relief. I feel that the if you look at Indiana Jones, Little Mermaid, Flash etc...I did really see forced agendas. The reasons why people didn't see the films were because of streaming, financial insecurities and they weren't that good.
Diversity is never the problem nor is social commentary. It's that too many now use it as shorthand for a good story and characters. Then they expect you to accept it and if you see past their crap then they attack the same people they want to support it. It shows time and again that you can have all the diversity and "wokeness" you want as long as it's attached to a good story, interesting characters and not the focus. It's sucks when a new project is announced and the first thing they start telling you is how many women are in the writing team or how the main character is the first whatever in cartoons or film and they tell you nothing of the plot or even about that character. It shows that the story came second and patting yourself on the back for making a trans or black woman the main character came first.
I think social commentary can be a problem when done in a lazy way. Like when creators insert specific heavy handed messaging just to score brownie points with a particular crowd, that's a huge turn off. But something which has something actually new to say or an original commentary can be a great thing..such as the Matrix making us think about what is reality.
people care they just don't have a word for the mediocrity they see in modern hollywood films, they blame it or poor scripting or not enough time to develop characters or some characters being poorly written rather than purposefully written that way for an agenda and praise they'll get by social media crowd the truth is they won't admit the issues cause that means something would have to be done about it and more so a quality line would have to be drawn which people never do
I don't know why. Woke is pretty easy to define. It's preaching Post Modernist agendas in media. You see......the Spider Verse does not come across as Woke. People don't seem to understand what Woke means. Having diversity and inclusion isn't Woke. Obnoxiously virtue signaling and using diversity for preaching is. Like with Indiana Jones. The Fleabag character is there to undermine and tear down Jones because he is an old white man and she is a young feminist
Go woke, go broke isn't about diversity. Go woke go broke is typically creating an emphasis on certain groups but the quality is bad. Like velma. Go woke go broke is ignoring red flags for diversity hires. Not every attempt to diversify is woke. New Spiderman movie is diverse, not woke. Not beating you in the head preachy.
To force diversity when not necessary and placing everyone in a box based on their race, sex, culture, etc. Like all the new commercials coming out now where apparently 90% of the American people are in an interracial relationship or gay. It is a distortion of reality to appease the sensibilities of a group seen as a "minority".
The creative variety is one of the best parts of these films, which includes the characters having distinctive looks and personalities even those just in the background. Not to mention the story exploring the concept of formula in Spiderman stories and embracing shake ups to canon.
I think there is a very fine line between “being afraid of change” and just straight up hating. To be fair, one of the leaders among the “anti-woke” crowd is The Critical Drinker. And to my utter shock, he listed Everything Everywhere All At Once among his favorite films of the year and he called Across The Spider-verse brilliant. So props lol? Geeks + Gamers and RK Outpost, on the other hand, straight up hate. Unless you can prove me otherwise…

@@GladwinAbelIt would likely win best animated film like it did when the first film released. I can’t even think of another animated film that has come out this year or upcoming that could top it but maybe there is something out there.
I feel like another example is fast and furious series, it's a series with a very diverse casting and even strong female archetypes but almost always makes a lot of money.
F&F started out starring the quintessential attractive, straight, white "alpha" male and a racially ambiguous co-star. The female love interest: played by a white actress (who uses sex appeal to manipulate men around her). The _only_ female actress who could possibly pass for black-ish (Nathalie Emmanuel), is phenotypically racially ambiguous but still very much of a European beauty aesthetic. And isn't a lead like Rodriguez and Brewster (or even Gadot). Giving minor, throw-away roles (many of which are antagonists/"bad guys") to Asian and white-presenting Hispanic actors isn't diversity; it's tokenism and quota-filling.
I'll be completely honest and upfront I did not hear any complaints or as they say Woke complaints about this movie maybe at most the black pregnant Spider-women. I love these guys but I think they missed the mark. Also Indiana Jones unfortunately is the definition of what people say woke is. I just think it's all a terrible thing. And the only reason why spiderman was such success this year was plain and simple it's a great film
I dont see how the hell Avatar isnt blasted for being so called woke. Because that movie is pro native, environmental, anti colonizer and very anti white movie. But people ignore that! Bridgeton race bended REAL HISTORICAL PEOPLE! like what in the F! It is HUGE! people love it. So I have no idea what people talking about.
@@supersonicsaga then that should be the argument. What I mean by this is stop co-opting the word woke. And use the argument of creative shoving down messages down peoples throats. If more of these RUclipsrs will make arguments like this it would be good. @@supersonicsaga Exactly this. Arcane and the DnD movie check off many "woke" tropes, but they are good regardless. "Woke" can be great as well as bad. It's the difference between Tales from the Hood 1 and Tales from the Hood 2.

I've been working in animation for over a decade now. The bread and butter to a good story is writing. Good character development, and good story elements, and relatability take your audiences on a journey they never forget. Thats why we always go back and watch classic movies that we love so much because they are enjoyable and fun to watch. Your goal as a film maker is to be a good story teller. It can be used as a tool to educate, motivate, and elevate peoples minds. But if misapproprated, people can and will see the bullshit and call you out on it. Your intentions have to make sense. The key word is "intent" Are you using your film to put out a statement, or are you making a film that can enrich someones imagination.
modern movies, are not relatable, it's sad that it takes a animated movie to be more relatable than a live-action one, that is out today and lot of movies that he is stating in his misguided review have no relationship to plot or story and is not character driven, and the biggest misconception that korey is not getting is that lot of these movies that are being made are just been made because of the name, Indiana Jones was made just because of the its name and and one person at Disney Studios is trying to destroy George Lucas Legacy, that's Kathleen Kennedy everything she touches turns to dust
i think marvel overall is proof off how good diversity is in storytelling vs dc. marvel has characters from all backgrounds and it feels natural. Black Panther, Ms Marvel, Jessica Jones, Miles Morales, hell even the xmen they all offer such different perspectives on life and culture, whether its real or an amalgamation of cultures, and feels like im reading or watching something unique and legit. As much as I love DC, their attempts at being diverse feel like they are just checking off boxes to be marketable and they do not care to push those ideas forward.
DC was more diverse than Marvel until they fired Zack Snyder... first big budget female superhero movie, first Asian/Pacific Islander superhero movie, first half-female superhero team since X-Men Last Stand, first half-minority superhero team Marvel was playing catchup for 10 years. Even then, DC is still more diverse Shazam, Blue Beetle, Black Adam and the JSA
As long as we remember diversity =/= automatically good writing. Look at Eternals, that's the most diverse group I've ever seen outside the Burger King kids club, and they sucked. Gotta focus on the story and character before anyone cares about the colorful collection of characters you introduce us to.
I find myself agreeing with some of the criticisms of the anti woke crowd but the main criticism of the last Indy movie boiled down to Phoebe Waller Bridge was annoying. That's it. Quite ironic given that Kate Capshaw wasn't exactly a fan favorite. They complained because she was portrayed as Indy's rival despite the fact that she ends up bonding with him. The earlier criticism was that she was going to be portrayed as his equal which clearly wasn't the case. Indy was always about getting himself out of tricky situations using his smarts, and having a goofy sense of humor. I got the feeling that some people were looking for any reason to crap on the movie when the reason for the movie's failure was more boring. The main criticism I had of the movie was that it stuck too close to the Indy formula, the opposite of trying to subvert the film's legacy. I believe a better Indy film could have satisfied both old and new fans but this film just couldn't get the balance right. Despite the film being watchable and even a step up from the last one, it couldn't overcome the huge deluge of summer blockbusters, each one more expensive than the last.
Stormfornt had personal beef with all dem bitches. The "girls get it done" set up didn't matter anymore at that point, shorties got on demon time and the fade followed.
My brother and I enjoyed this movie for its animation and story, plus I loved seeing other Spider mans being black that shows were getting more representation, and I loved Miles being half Puerto Rican considering that my family is from the Caribbean. Let the haters hate its not gonna stop me from rewatching this film it was beautiful.
Beautiful Animation, Fun Story, Great Cast. Happy its getting a Boost & More love & For the Outta pocket comments I saw someone reply to say read them in Dale Gribble's voice from King of The Hill and Bruh that is Entertainment for hours cause they cant help themselves lmaoo
Agreed and instead of the pandering they focused on the the story and making the characters interesting unlike many other projects that fail to get it right and only care about diversity instead of story.
Another great example of how “Go Woke, Go Broke” is a lie is Nimona. That movie is debatably more “in your face” with its progressive assets than ATSV with its message against intolerance towards trans/non-binary people, promotes a bit if anarchy, and a prominent same-sex couple where they unapologetically kiss right in front of the camera. Yet, even with all those “woke” things, it’s been getting major praise and is currently the biggest movie on Netflix.
Some of the creators behind the movie actually explain that a lot of the plot is a direct answer to the original backlash about Miles Morales. The conversation with Miles and his mom. The scene where Spiderman 2099 tells Miles he was an accident, he was never meant to be Spider man. And Miles answer that everyone is trying to tell him who he is and that's he's going to do his own thing. This is the part that gets lost in all the argument over diversity. No, diversity alone is not going to save a bad script or a badly written character. And when it comes off as a cheap gimmick its even worse. But fighting against diversity can rob the world of really good movies and great characters. The point of diversity is to take away barriers, so the story and characters can shine on their own merit, no matter who they are. That basic point gets lost along the way.
Portray Jessica Drew correctly. Her web wings allow her to fly and she has stinger abilities but she never uses these powers in the movie. WTf with the Motorcycle!! Spider heroes don’t need motorcycles!! That is what web slinging is for
This ‘woke’ thing needs to stop. What if a movie is good because it’s ACTUALLY good? The story is engaging and the animation is on a whole other level. I feel the audience is gravitating toward this movie because it’s bringing something new, something different in animation. Something that Pixar, Illuminations, and Dreamworks aren’t doing. Audiences know the quality those studios provide. The folks behind Spider Verse are stretching the limits and boundaries of animation. It’s different, it’s new, it’s edgy, it animated so beautifully. And that’s what will make audiences go to see it. Sure, you can make an argument that it’s culture is impacting communities in a positive light. But, that’s not the only thing. Pixar is dropping the ball on their last few movies and no longer the animation juggernaut powerhouse it use to be. Same with Dreamworks. Illuminations is a one trick pony behind the minions, their animations always look the same. Audiences are getting bored of the same style and the same quality. That’s why this movie is a success. It’s different.
Oh they tried to cancel this too. You cant tell me that the complaints about there being a part 3 to an obvious trilogy wasnt a sneaky attempt to chip away at this francises popularity.
This movie ain't woke at all. Why? Cos the movie's never about Miles being a non-white Spidey as THE main thing. He's just one of the many Spider-powered heroes in the multiverse..or spider-verse. And unlike Strangeworld and Lightyear, there's no obvious agenda being paddled..pushed here. And no unnecessary gender or race -swapping... Even tho, i still think ppl who won't give the new little mermaid a chance IS stoopid..and maybe racist. Halle's GREAT as the live action Ariel. Anyway.. Yeah, anyone who sees this movie as being woke is an imbecile.
I saw a Tiktok reaction to a guy who questioned why there's an Indian Spiderman.....in India. Love the comments tho. "He's right. I expected British Spider-Man in India."
Being white, I never saw an issue with having black/brown people in Media. But the idea of a persin saying "you made the white person goofy" when 1. If you have a mostly white cast 9/10 there's at leaat gonna be two goody asses. And 2. Do they not know Peter parker? Wise cracking, jokester, peter parker!? Have they interacted with spider man media in their lives? Were they born yesterday??
This movie is so good, all of those “go woke go broke“ RUclips channels have nothing to crap on outside of the fact that “it’s only half a movie“. And they drove that horse into the ground.
Cuz it's a good movie, simple as that. They use "woke" elements to tell a good story, not make up a garbage story and make it the background for "woke" stuff.
This movie isn't woke because the characters are already established. Movies like the little mermaid people call woke because of the race bending (which is stupid) or if you inject a gay character or situation like in lightyear ( that scene was a blink and you miss it scene but I digress). It's ashame because if the movie is good then it's good regardless of what's in it yet many people aren't ready for change
More often not, a good story with good characters, that doesn’t beat you over the head with anything, is more than enough to win over plenty of people.
it's because while the film DOES actively promote diversity, the appeal of its characters don't begin and end with "look, we included an Indian person! Give us a pat on the back!" each character has funny lines, their own experiences, their own aesthetic, their own motivations, their own impact on the story . . . .they have DEPTH. They're not just affirmative action palette swaps of more beloved cis white male characters: they have their own shit going on. And they're not made so obnoxiously competent that they render the efforts of the protagonist useless by comparison. Spider-Woman can still have her badass moments while still being flawed in backing the wrong horse and still being able to fall for a trap from Miles. It's not cold and calculated. It's not arbitrary or surface level like so much representation in media is. It's also not preachy (matter of fact the film actively makes fun of preachyness by acknowledging that Spider-Punk is a bit obnoxious to Miles). It's PURPOSEFUL and CREATIVELY DONE.
Honestly no one has a problem with diversity, it’s the preaching, shaming, and victimization that people don’t like. The problem with the unsuccessful “woke” material is that it labels everyone in the audience either a victim or an oppressor, with no one asking them to. In most cases the people watching are neither of those things so it’s annoying
Yeah Korey but they act like forced agendas are unique to diversity campaigns. There have always been agendas in movies, namely that America is always the good guy.
I used to follow some channels on RUclips few years ago i think after last jedi bc i really didn't liked the film and these people were ripping this movie to shreds in their live streams, but agter just like 3 to 4 months i was just exhausted bc these channels are nothing but hate trains, they watch and consume every single MCU,Amazon, Netflix property they do not like while telling their your audience not to watch it while them being there on the first day first show ready to talk shit and making a video about how woke and bad these are They hated Bri Larson when Captain Marvel came out and Kathleen Kenedy after Last jedi, even after all these years they make videos about these two women, i mean yes they make videos about other "woke" celebrities but Bri and Kathleen are like two punching bags for alot of the channels who just happened to be very good friends with eachother
Imagine the Marvel films were made by a Christian movie studio. The films were the same quality, but with Christian themes. Captain America spoke often of his personal relation with Jesus, while Tony Stark's arc was overcoming alcoholism through faith. Christianity was depicted as true, while atheists were ignorant, foolish or malicious. People with traditional lifestyles were happy and well adjusted, everyone else was marred in some way. Strong, independent women ended up lonely and unhappy, and gays lived short, tragic lives, caused by poor moral choices. The villains' evil plots always involved convincing people to abandon God. That's what it's like for a conservative to watch modern movies. Would you enjoys such films, even if they had great special effects and good actors?
Counter to your point about this could have been a story about any Spider-Man.... the directors have said the story was a response to people on the internet saying Miles isn't a real Spider-Man because he's black.
That's the key word. Diverse. It's not woke, trying to shove talking points down your throats. People who talk about wokeness in film have absolutely no problem with diversity.
Eric July's self professed "anti-woke" comics star an all Black cast and sold over a million copies on their first day. Woke is when it makes more sense to cast a White person but you do the opposite because you think White people are icky, like changing the race of established characters or historical figures.
Miles literally have a BLM button on his bag… Yet the “woke” aspect of this movie was not overbearing. It did not get in the way or distract from an amazing film
Exactly. The only real "Woke" argument people have is Jessica Drew race swap, it's not that big of a deal but I do think it's lazy to be honest. I would have prefer Valerie the librarian, the real first Spider-Woman and she's black instead of some white hand-me-downs.
Spider-Man is a brilliant creation. You don't have to be a white kid to relate to Peter Parker. You don't have to be black/Latino to understand Mile Morales. Their struggles and triumphs are universal and span a whole crazy SpiderVerse

Oh my god thank you! This is 100 percent correct. He’s a goofy dad who seems thrilled that he is one.
Right. Peter was shown as a protective father and loving husband. They didnt feel the need to make Myles look good by making the white guy look bad.

This is true
Go white, goodnight haha gold 🥇
I'm stealing "Go white goodnight.".
They cost too much and they saturate the market with stuff we've already seen before.

when miles morales first debuted in the comics world people said the same shit about him that they say about the little mermaid.
I never cared about Miles until I saw him in Ultimate Spiderman. I liked his portrayal there.
and even then he's still in that same box of non growth, cause no one knows what to do with him, same enemies, town and stories as peter cause he really is pointless and that's a sad truth
I still do not care about him. Peter Parker is the only Spiderman for me
19:31 the recent exception to this would be Puss in Boots: The last wish; bad first movie, excellent second movie that did well financially.
Nimona was fun to watch. And that scene with Ballister stopping Nimona made me cry. That movie has heart

The crazy thing is that most of the time, these characters ARE written to be more than just their ethnicity and sexual orientation, but the "anti-woke" crowd ONLY sees them as that thing.

Alien isn't cause it isn't about sue Ripley being invincible or infalliable, Prey Naru is outright, complaining all the way while everyone dies by her stupidity and is rewarded by the end as a "told you so" look on her face as all their tribesmen are dead and the predators come back for round 2

People don't like a liberal agenda pushed in their face, but a lot of people also don't want a right wing or bigoted agenda pushed in their face, either.

Woke is just an all encapsulating term for shit they don’t like.

Honestly, I didn't hear this discussion for this movie. I will clarify that I mostly discuss movies on Twitter and that's a big factor in most of the conversations I have. The biggest controversy about this movie was people discussing his last name. Why doesn't he have his father's last name? They went on and on about that?
I chalked that up to it being a different universe where the family takes the women's last name.

This is how you do diversity
Exactly
@@NMbones98 yup
The complaint of race-swapping doesn’t mean Woke though.

Cory, it’s not that it’s diverse. It’s that most movies are sh*t now, most with obnoxious marketing attached to them too. This was genuinely good, and people love it.The absolute opposite of everything Disney are doing these days.
Woke is not congruent to diverse. It's a term used for bad writing with major emphasis on diversity.
Well said. Before this word "woke" was a thing it was called "being preached to," which everybody hated.
I think social commentary can be a problem when done in a lazy way. Like when creators insert specific heavy handed messaging just to score brownie points with a particular crowd, that's a huge turn off. But something which has something actually new to say or an original commentary can be a great thing..such as the Matrix making us think about what is reality.
people care they just don't have a word for the mediocrity they see in modern hollywood films, they blame it or poor scripting or not enough time to develop characters or some characters being poorly written rather than purposefully written that way for an agenda and praise they'll get by social media crowd
the truth is they won't admit the issues cause that means something would have to be done about it and more so a quality line would have to be drawn which people never do
The “Go woke, go broke” crowd can’t even define “woke”. I love calling them out on that
I don't know why.
It’s funny right? One side can’t define “woke,” the other can’t define women.

The fight with Spot will be incredible. He's now akin to a god!
It’s like the girl power scene in the boys vs the scene in endgame, endgame felt forced, the boys didn’t
Infinity War is better regardless if they had that girl power scene or not
Stormfornt had personal beef with all dem bitches. The "girls get it done" set up didn't matter anymore at that point, shorties got on demon time and the fade followed.

That is what web slinging is for
Go Woke, Go Broke? More like Go Fash, Lose Cash.
If the "woke" themes have actual subtlety and don't overshadow the main principles of the film then yeah, you're more likely to be successful.
this movie is freaking awesome and amazing in my book

Nothing was forced, it's just that simple.
I think these guys don't understand what woke is
it's because while the film DOES actively promote diversity, the appeal of its characters don't begin and end with "look, we included an Indian person! Give us a pat on the back!"
each character has funny lines, their own experiences, their own aesthetic, their own motivations, their own impact on the story . . . .they have DEPTH.
You realize you are the exact type of person they’re criticizing in this video?
@@wjsproductions1784 I don’t know how you arrived at that conclusion, but ok.
@@wjsproductions1784 Corey literally said "I'm not sexist but" after complaining about people who say "I'm not racist but" lmao.
Yeah Korey but they act like forced agendas are unique to diversity campaigns.
There have always been agendas in movies, namely that America is always the good guy.
I used to follow some channels on RUclips few years ago i think after last jedi bc i really didn't liked the film and these people were ripping this movie to shreds in their live streams, but agter just like 3 to 4 months i was just exhausted bc these channels are nothing but hate trains, they watch and consume every single MCU,Amazon, Netflix property they do not like while telling their your audience not to watch it while them being there on the first day first show ready to talk shit and making a video about how woke and bad these are
They hated Bri Larson when Captain Marvel came out and Kathleen Kenedy after Last jedi, even after all these years they make videos about these two women, i mean yes they make videos about other "woke" celebrities but Bri and Kathleen are like two punching bags for alot of the channels who just happened to be very good friends with eachother
For real man some of those channels had like 30 back to back videos trashing the last jedi. At some point its like jesus man move on.
Except those all limit the kind've characters you can create
One of my favorite movies of the year
Counter to your point about this could have been a story about any Spider-Man.... the directors have said the story was a response to people on the internet saying Miles isn't a real Spider-Man because he's black.
This the most diverse movie ever and is loved by the general audience. Great story and feels natural
That's the key word. Diverse. It's not woke, trying to shove talking points down your throats. People who talk about wokeness in film have absolutely no problem with diversity.
@@TheZerox500yes they do
@@TheZerox500 People like you that use "woke" don't even know it's meaning. It's become a meaningless buzzword and a huge dog whistle.
They tried to say Mario was woke when the trailer dropped because princess peach was shown to be a warrior
@@TheSenzuBeanPlug the mass majority of people do not, there can you accept that?
Translation: if it ain't straight and white, it ain't right
Eric July's self professed "anti-woke" comics star an all Black cast and sold over a million copies on their first day. Woke is when it makes more sense to cast a White person but you do the opposite because you think White people are icky, like changing the race of established characters or historical figures.
“Go woke go broke” has never been real no matter how much it rhymes
I hate what they turned woke into. I cringe every time it's used now
People like miles now. It's that simple. When people like you, you can getaway with a lot of things they don't like.
People like Miles, and people don’t *dislike* “wokeness” as much as some figures on the internet like to pretend they do.
