  • A short film by Martial Arts Instructor Sifu Keith Min showcasing the Chinese Internal Kung Fu style, "Xing Yi Quan".
    ABOUT XING YI:
Xing Yi Quan is an extremely powerful, direct, and practical fighting style. Its goal is to reach and drive through the opponent quickly, overwhelming them using bursts of aggressive, linear movement. The direct fighting philosophy of Xing Yi advocates simultaneous attack and defense, where efficiency and economy of movement are crucial to dominating an opponent.

Keith Min is a member of the Chicago-based LBP Stunts Chicago Action Team (www.lbpstuntschicago.com/), who most recently participated as core members of the stunt team for the upcoming action-adventure film DIVERGENT.

Loved the video. It showed exactly the flavor of what Xingyiquan is.
Been a practitioner and teacher since the 80s.
When you see someone treating Xingyi Quan in a similar light as Taijiquan… stressing push hands type of applications … if your interested in learning real Xingyiquan , just walk away from them.
Xingyiquan is an advance form of pugilism, it is based on dominating the opponents centerline by taking control of the angles… not by push hands, not by sticky hand … Xingyiquan does it by using attacks and counter attacks. The methods themselves seize control of the angle in play …
By treating applications similar to Taijiquan’s one also miss the syncopation and timing that xingyiquan is all about. Its creators understood tempo … Xingyiquan exist in the “in-between beats of the tempo of a fight. A simple example: people will jab (on 1) the throw a cross (on 2) for a quick 1, 2 (for two beats… ) Pi Quan does not teach 1, 2 … it teaches dominating the angle on 1 (with the rise and drill which is similar to wedge block defense) and striking almost simultaneously (with overturn and fall… ). Its not a 1 & 2 … It’s 1 &….
All Mother fists teach strategies and tactics like the above
    And that’s sophistication

For all you Xing Yi haters on this post, even more to those who really have any actual skill in any other martial art. Go find a sincere long term student of Xing Yi and feel it for yourself. You are missing out if you don't. It's one of the most direct, effective, and accessible arts out there. Which is exactly why it is rarely seen in the ring. It's one of only a few martial arts in the world that have actually been battle tested in large scale warfare by a mainstream military with deadly results. And Xing Yi, along with Ba Gua and Tai Chi, can be tracked back as root arts of a surprising large amount of other established martials around the world. So much so that speaking poorly about it, to anybody with any clue, will most likely be seen as a sign of somebody is clueless.

I actually see Xing Yi, Ba Gua, Tai chi in the ring all the time not directly but rather the principals aren't that far off from modern day marital arts and it's so unfortunate that people miss those connections because it can be so powerful in trained hands. Often people mistake these arts as ineffectual due to the people presenting them whom don't have that ring experience but imagine someone like a mma fighter who cross trained in them.

To anyone who knows anything about the subject, how would Xing Yi Quan hold up to Baji Quan? In my travels in China, these were the two styles that most often were referred to as the most practical, efficient styles of Kung Fu.

Practicing the form and do the techniques in actual combat are 2 very different things. In forms you can be more wide open and do bigger and more elegant moves, to practice body mechanics. In real fight you need to be adjustable and have good timing so your techniques are different, more practical and short.
Internal martial arts begin with internal training first and then goes to external, while external martial arts the opposite. You need both, you cant be totally internal or totally external as a martial artist. I like this video because its shows good skills at form AND shows you some practical adjustable henkas ( variations ) Battle is not a nice view and most of martial artists forget how the techniques they practice really looks in combat scenarios.
    Very good job.

Xing to is effective yet too limited which was why the eagle claw was required. Xing to is only effective up close or in a gang fight where there isn't much open space for everyone. Xing yi is good but also kind of a incomplete art. It lacks defense, grabbing and evasion.

  • @Deathpunkization

Actually, there's very little of it on movies. The One, The Grandmaster and that's it, really. Xing Yi actually is a very brutal style that looks ugly only to those who are used to flashy kicks and Bourne Identity movies. Forget about seeing it on film. The guys that made this video made a good attempt at capturing the practicality or power expressions of the style on a short pilot film. Very good job, actually. If you know what you're doing and you trained the right way, then you will be an opponent to be reckoned with. As usual, it depends on the practitioner and the teacher. The lineage perhaps, but it's up to each practitioner to make himself combat ready.
Regarding the Kung Fu Quest documentary, the families featured there are only used to fighting if at all amongst their own, they really don't go out there to try and fight other styles.
Drop Chinese kung fu flicks as soon as you get off the TV set. Forget them and really start looking into what you're doing unromantically. If you practice with chop socky flicks in mind, you're going to let yourself down when it's time to put your stuff to work. The same with MMA. UFC fans do not necessarily make good fighters.
Keep reality and practicality in mind when you're focusing on applications. If your goal is practicing forms for whatever other noble reason you have, be it a form collector or whatever, then don't run your mouth.
Saying Xing Yi is ineffective is an irresponsible remark. If you've been in martial arts long enough, you'd know by now that all schools are not equal or have the same focus or dedication to an honest pursuit. If you do not understand what's being done or how to use it, just shut the fuck up.

You should check out the movie The Grandmaster, by Wong Kar Wai. It's technically another wing chun movie about Ip Man, but it includes many good martial arts demonstrations and fights with masters of different styles like baji, hung gar and bagua. It also has at least three scenes that I remember that showcase the art of xing yi. Worth a watch!

Aside from good body mechanics, the external visible part is probably about 5% of the art. The forms are meditative (but not 'pretty') and at first, the practice makes a person very healthy and very strong. I have seen advanced practitioners throw thousands of punches in a single workout. The idea is that you build up a lot of chi and learn how to use that energy, those that have mastered this art are deeply respected by other martial artists. If you don't know, and you run into one of them on the street or in a tournament, you very soon will. It's always a good idea to be polite and courteous regardless...

They can fight against Xing Yi Quan, or other styles, so I can see the effectiveness of the style. People can go all day and say BJJ, Pankration, Kickboxing, Wing Chun, Wrestling, Western Boxing etc, etc. is better and Xing Yi Quan is garbage. Ok, fair enough prove it with you sparring in your style against other "bullshit" styles. ijs

Not true. Xing Yi is a complete system. In the beginning of the 20th century, xingyi, bagua and taiji were trained together as 3 parts of one whole, so the way it's trained now emphasises on attack, since taiji emphasises on absorbtion and bagua on evasion.

    • @robertchauval2492
      @robertchauval2492 8 лет назад +4

You either havent trained hard enough or dont have a teacher that can show you those aspects of the art.. deflection and evasion are in there but in the context of xing yi NOT taiji and bagua. Agreed XY appears externally to be soley an attacking art, but internally it relies on the same princples and sensitivities that TJ and BG use. The context and expression are different thats all.

Bear in mind the log he's spinning around his head in the middle part is much, much heavier than it looks. Xing Yi application is simple and very, very powerful. All the fancy movements are just to get your body moving, but for developing whole body power, real Xing Yi practice is hard to beat. vimeo.com/9622648

***** Yeah I never really understand why they even make it a 5v1 fight if 4 of them just jacking off while 1 gets beaten. Just do a GOOD 1v1 instead of making it look kinda stupid And I mean films in general

deanpetrow half right and half wrong. In a real street fight I don't care how good you fight , if you alone are fighting 5 people you will get at least 2 or 3 hits

Everything looks good except Hengquan, it's not really strike, it's primarily a takedown. The application shown Heng is really just Zuan quan.

Troy Schott 30+ years of Hubei style Xingyiquan here.... Heng Quan is akin to a "drilling' back fist. Both hands performing circles in opposite directions along with the Yao cork screwing downward then torquing hard back (fajin) toward the direction it started and towards/through the target. If the opponent is close the movement can be used to throw someone,, (especially if the rear hand has something like the opponent's arm/lapel etc..... However Heng Quan is generally used for an multi directional back fist. (it comes across the body diagonally but also drills up then down or down then up) Its one of the measuring sticks for a xingyi practitioner. (i.e how much power one can generate doing it) If done correctly its brutal! But I do agree that the video is demonstrating a Zhuan Quan application.

Just train all the time martial arts are made for the same reasons, some are only more powerful than others because of the practitioner.

Jjtalbot; if you were remotely intelligent, you would've understood that there is no top martial art. The only thing that makes an art good is its artist. You should probably look up the lineage of the art you brag about being skilled at, and trace its roots. Get back to me.

So many bad teachers out there too. I dont play the "this art is better than so and so" nonsense.. just find an art that has good history, suits you physically and mentally and def a good teacher then just train hard.. its all up to you
