People can trash talk these GM 60 degree V6 engines all they want, but they are pretty reliable, make a great noise and it is nice when people do things to tune them. I feel they deserve more love than they get.
They definitely need more recognition. i think the main reason they arent as popular is they got overshadowed by the 3800 because they came stock with forced induction that was common. realistically the 3100/3400 is a much better platform for actual power, just it was overshadowed and we now have a lack of aftermarket. i feel a setup using the 3.4dohc design with a custom intake, better cams and head, and some boost could easily reach 700+ wheel
My buddy in high school had the four cylinder version and let me tell ya, we tried every bolt on doo-hickey possible to make it faster! 😁. Thanks for sharing Matt, love it!
I had a friend with a factory turbo cavalier. I've never seen another one since. I don't remember the exact year, but it was the same body style. Finding parts was impossible for it 15 years ago
So cool to see one alive. Friend had a '91 in highschool with the 3.1. They were pretty torquey and fun even stock. Of course he managed to blow it up but that was the hardest car for him to destroy.
What’s cool is the Grand Prix came with a turbo 3100, the 3.4 and subsequent 3.5 share a lot with each other. The F35 is the manual transmission that bolts up to those v6 motors.
Damn that is super cool. Super clean ride too. Never would have thought you could put a 3400 in one of those. In the age of every car getting a K series or LS swap, this is refreshing.
Always had a soft spot for these cars. My brother had a z24 convertible when I was a kid. Won a handful of car shows with it! Awesome to see a super clean one with an off the wall combo.
This definitely brings back high school memories. Had a buddy that had a Z24 convertible. He put a glass pack muffler on it. It was ungodly loud. Could hear it from over a half mile away. I think it was as slow as the 305 powered third gen he bought after the cavalier. 😂
I love oddball stuff. I’m so tired of LS and K series content. Both great engines... blah blah blah... but this guy deserves respect and these are decent numbers. I bet the torque figure is good too. Thanks for sharing Matt
Nah I can argue that😅 but in a race against mine I am TOAST!!! Imagine if this car had an extra gear from a F40 Transmission swap, you may be able to see this car do 200mph+ at the bonneville salt flats🤷 don't forget some special tires of course!! Also suspension work🤔 it can be done and seeing this cavalier in a video doing 200mph makes history😂
the z34 lumina was a sweet car lol i had a 94 cutlass supreme with what i think was that same 24valve 3.4 as the z34? it smoked all the cool kid's maximas and hondas and vr6s until the 3.5s came out lol and even the 3.5 maximas were'nt enough to pull on it except on the highway
wow, that thing is super clean, its rare to see them without rust everywhere. I actually like the looks of that generation Cavalier z24, and the Beretta z26
This Z24 + this engine setup = Has alot of QUESTIONS!! Me as a fellow 1993 Z24 wants to know😏 I am still waiting on Ben Phelps to get my engine Done! I also have plans to break records with it once the car is back in my hands 🤝 Very Beautiful car! Fantastic Job
memories. I had a 92 with a stick. full bells and whistle. Miss it to death! Sold it around 2001. edit: can't tell if it's just the colors in this video editing, but mine was a slightly darker blue
Z24’s were very popular where I’m from during the late 90’s. I had a couple RS 3.1’s and a 2.8 Z24. The engines were torquey compared to any of the 4 bangers of the day but the transmissions didn’t hold up well. Don’t see may of these cars around anymore.
I was able to get 300 something out of an na 3400 with a tune and a couple other things. I loved it. It beat everything. It was the pontiac grand am, i miss it
The later Montana/uplander minivans and g6 etc had a 3.9L version of this engine with vvt that made 240/240 stock. Always wanted to boost one in something.
My 07 chevy equinox (the good ones) has the ole gm 3.4 paired with a aisin auto 5 speed sitting at 430k miles. It had absolutely nothing done except maintenance and it sounds amazing on a cold start with factory exhaust. They don't die and can handle some power and abuse.
My brother had a Pontiac sunbird. Idk what year. 90 something anyways. Looked similar. All he did was put a muffler and 17" rims. That was cool to have in our highschool days. There was a turbo'd sunbird. But unfortunately my bro didn't have one of those.
In a world caught up in LS swaps nice to see someone showing the old six shooters some love... Matt anyone asking you to tune an LV3 4.3 v6? With vvt and flex fuel I bet you could play all day.
I got a Cavalier but it's not the foxbody look like this one in the video. Mine is an 03 with a 2.2 DOHC. Motor blew and was beyond repair so I now have plans to turn it into a mud buggy. I'm stuck between taking a 3.8 from a Buick and just boosting it stock with a single turbo or building a strong twin turbo 3.5 from a Chrysler or Dodge.
I was wondering how bad of an idea it would be to take like one of the 3800 and turbo as a swap in like a suburban you know like the eco boost I mean if it's makeing like 500 at the crank that's still pretty good and could possibly get better millage
I'm pretty sure the 3800 would too but they won't both probably take some effort as far as which computer to use and I assume you have more control over the 3800 because they have a coil for each cylinder well a per 2 but I assume they are controllable and as far as I remember all the 4.3l have distributors but I don't think I have really messed with one in a while
I'm running a 3100 with a turbo in my 1993 c1500. More power and better on gas than the 350 tbi. Eventually I will go 3400 or 3900 to get some more torque when not in boost.
@@james10739 using a obd II computer for the engine but plan to switch to megasquirt. Best I have done is 22mpg taking it easy. I think that I can still get a little better from it!
@@modeverything1 I mean in a half ton truck that's like 30 years old that's pretty good ball park do you know how much you are making I mean the stock 350 only made like 190 hp or something but probably around 300ft/lbs
It's the coolant not the 3.4 itself. Dexcool. Terrible chit. Most 3.4 factory recommend dexcool Brownish coolant , it eats the head gaskets. Not a gasket problem nor 3.4 to blame. Dexcool. Simple fix. These 3.4 are just as reliable as 3.8 or any V6. Flush that chit out
My best friend has a 99 Camaro we put together with alot of the parts off my 00 z28 it has a 2004 3800 blower motor from a grand Prix with a n/a intake with 80 pound injectors it's on e85 besides that its stock he built the turbo kit it's got a s472 with a 1.15 or 1.10 t6 housing and a cheap a2w intercooler. It's never been on the dyno but its pretty damn fast its gotta be in the 475-500 range, the biggest pain in the ass is the weak 5 speeds that come in those cars. When ever that 3800 let's go he has another one put together with good rods and pistons and a pretty nice glide ready to go! If he can get one of those 3800's to make some power I'd like to put one in my z28 it weighs 3127# with me full fuel cel andl a 403 ls2 gtx5594, th400 and strange 12 bolt and see how fast a 3800 can go in a decent chassis
The old 3.4 cavaliers, the 5litre eater, I had one exactly like that same color 3.4, was a auto and put a 5spd in it on a 150 shot went 13.1 99mph, hence the sign*, had 2 haha fuck

Minus the fact the paint is pretty mint, nobody will ever expect what's about to happen when they're lined up at a red light...
Brings me back to high school. Had a 94 beretta z26
I still have a 96 Z26. Awaiting a 3400/3500. I love it

They're about the same as a 3.1L sfi.
I deeply approve of this. Excellent!
That’s sweet. 400+ hp.
I did this swap for a buddy's brother way back when. I was never a chevy v6 guy, but these were pretty cool!
That thing looks super clean! I always loved the z24 package on those

I always loved the look of that era of Cavalier. It appeals to the hotwheels kid in me. The sound of the boost hitting that 3.4.... Yeah buddy!
This sounds really good

Yes
Is this a stock bottom end motor?
I’m curious to this as well. What was done to the engine to prep for boost.
That has to be some kind of record for a 3.4 l Chevy V6
There's a 3800 series II 5sp 87 z24 on the internet. Would love to have it
