Could be something wrong with his ear piece. Its very hard to hear yourself in a live Metal/Rock setting like this. If the ear piece is flaking out or something is wrong at the sound board, you can easily miss timing or not be able to hear yourself which is an even bigger issue. King is 68 years old, probably has hearing issues most likely.
