- So I fancied getting into something older for a while. Wanted a car that was driver focused and having always had a love for older BMW's my search naturally led me to E30 BMW's. I picked it up around a week ago and wanted to share it with you here on the channel.
I have a lot of stuff planned for this car so please subscribe if you want to see more.
Loving driving it so far - So nice to have an inline 6 under the bonnet as well. Can't wait to do more with it!

Cant wait!
@@BudgetMechanic theyll be coming as soon as they can :)
The E30 is one of those iconic cars to me. If you haven’t already, check out the Restore It channel on here.
I have never owned one of these but my next door neighbour when I lived in UK owned a 2 door 1985 E30 car, he replaced it with a later 4 door model. He loved it, he worked for a BMW dealer in Tunbridge Wells.
I shall enjoy the rest of your videos over the next few weeks 😊
Yep I agree, its truly iconic for sure. And yes Restore It is a fantastic channel, big fan of that one! And thats interesting to hear, always cool to hear how E30s have come into different people's lives and what people have owned.
Thanks man, be sure to check out various playlists!
what a gem of a car. nice!
Thanks!
Great car ! Had one but sold it. Sure make content about your work projects on this car, shall be watching. Good luck !
Thanks man! You should definitely get back in one ;)
Wow - very gorgeous. The car is not bad either!
I'll take it as a compliment I guess? 😂
Nice. I liked your overview. Good shots, enough volume level. It is probably hard to overview something in E30 that wasn't yet, but I watched all your videos about E30. The car itself looks great for me! I don't know how much did you pay for it, but in Ukraine a car in such conditions is about $7.5-8.5k which I guess is quite expensive for me. Everything under $4k has to be checked carefully because most of them are tired of rust and cheap tuning. Good luck! I will probably keep on watching your videos about E30 to not to know about it, but just to enjoy a good car with a good shots
Thank you very much! Yes E30 values are only going up nowadays, I didn't pay a ridiculous sum for this one and got quite lucky with it being pretty rust free! Stay tuned, we have many more videos coming on this car!
E30's are pretty much the best era of BMW cars ever made in my opinion. They look quite good still, not too old, not too boxy, but also not too futuristic looking. They are electronic enough to be very easily modifiable in terms of the original motor electronics, so in theory you can make them much more fuel efficient with minor changes to the engine electronics or then make much more power out of the stock engine. There is a lot of information of the typical failpoints of these cars in e30zone and only really hard problem I have had to solve with my e30 were the occasionally poor "little bit warm" starts. That proved out to be the round connector in the engine bay which connects the injectors and at least the engine temp sensor to the ECU, so probably it was getting only 3 of them pulsed. But to replace the connector is realitively easy, and is to be expected for this old of a car. My car is a 1990 2D sedan, pretty much stock expect the weels and ethanol conversion and only things ever broken fully are the fan clutch, some hoses: air, fuel, coolant, heater core, blower and the valve, intake seals, one fuel sender unit (it has two because if it's not level, it will still be accurate, not all of them have though), the round connector and windshield wiper mechanism. Also some outer parts I have replaced, but they are just for the looks so I don't count them here. Might sound like a lot, but they have all happened just recently and were original parts, so quite bad for lasting only 30 years and already broken 😂 Anyway like about 500 € for this kind of repairs in 30 years is quite good. The intake seals would've cost quite much in a shop, but I did it myself in a weekend so the seals cost like 10 €. Otherwise it's just as expensive to keep really than any other much newer car if you know anything about what you're doing.
I can't agree more with your comment, so true. For me the E30 sums up what driving should be, just enough electronics to make them useable as a daily and mechanically advanced enough to make them great fun out on the roads. As you say the design of them still looks great, it's not too obviously 80s like some cars which I think is what helps it look so good today. And then as you mention parts are fairly cheap (and also readily available most of the time). Not to mention the fact the E30 is mechanically and electronically simple enough for most people to be able to repair them at home with fairly basic tools. The 80s and 90s has to be some of the best times for the motor car surely. It represents a time when cars were mechanically advanced but not overly complicated like they can be today. Surely that is everything any driver needs...
My friend asked me why i bought e30? I said that's because you can feel everything when you drive, when you steer you feel the road with your hands on the steering wheel + there are few e30's on the road and everybody around is giving "likes" when you drive. He didn't understood what I was talking about until he has driven it. Then he said - now I understood what you are talking about. I'm also driving touring. Went for the touring, because to me it looks better that sedan or 2door.
I love to hear things like this! And I love your passion for E30's too. Its great to hear people appreciate them and understand what its like to have one. Agreed on the looks of the Touring, it is one of the best looking E30s in my mind. Thanks for watching!
4:06 in terms of originality, all factory e30’s have an angled tip and the m20 6cylinder engines have 2 tips (m10/m40 4cylinder had one tip)
Ah thanks a lot for the info - yeah I was more wondering as the back box looks pretty beefy and doesn't fit the space it's in too well
Foot to Pedal it does look like it is hanging low though haha😎😎 😁😁
Ahaha yep 👍
Loverly condition.
Thanks!
Well if you were a salesman I'd have bought it. Nice video mate.
Ahaha thanks Joe!
I got a 1989 325i E30 Executive about 10 years ago. I still have it, but that initial drive got my dopamine levels surging to levels even cocaine can't get you to.
Ahaha yeah there is no doubt these E30's have a way with you, it's so refreshing to drive something these days with such a driver focus. I find mine very entertaining!
I have a 1990 E30 Touring RHD here in the US. It is from Maidestone, I am putting an S50B30US engine in it at the moment. I also have a 2007 MINI Cooper S. Love your videos
Ah awesome, yeah must be even more special to have a Touring over in the US. And no doubt that S50 will be a very cool setup! Thanks a lot for watching 👍
@@FootToPedal No problem, thanks for the follow on Instagram.
No worries man, some great stuff on your page👍
Nice video! Ive just got myself a 1990 320i coupe and also plan to film some videos on it. Big power and custom wide body is the plan. Will be nice to see what you do to this
Awesome, sounds great! Yeah these E30's are such great cars even 30 years on, hope you enjoy it. Will keep an eye out for your videos too! Thanks for watching 👍
@@FootToPedal cheers, wont be uploading to this channel. Itll be on a new one, i have loads of videos already filmed but sadly my PC specs are not up to standard for editing! So will be upgrading it around december time and releasing videos in the new year most likely
Great sounds good! Look forward to them
Love it mate. If you ever want to sell those front mud flaps HMU :)
Just took my driving test in a 1.8 touring, examiner was loving it lol
They've actually grown on me a lot now, quite like the look of them 😂 Ahh very cool, bet that was an experience for them ahaha
Really nice example, well bought I’d say. Don’t remove the mudflaps, they look fine & you should keep it original, that is were the scarcity lies as there were so many e30’s made just not many around in this condition.
Thanks a lot, yeah really enjoy it! And yeah I must say they have grown on me a lot now and I'm definitely going to keep them on there. Definitely makes it a bit unique. Stay tuned for more content!
There’s no fun in keeping it all original. Keep all the original parts though!
Do you have PAS and if you do, do you use Dexron III ATS for it?? I got a 325i that appears to be running a little low going by the dipstick on the reservoir and I was wondering which liquid to use.
I do have PAS but I've not needed to change or top up the fluid as of yet, I believe Dexron III ATF would be correct though. Probably best to check the service manual to be sure
@@FootToPedal Will have a peek in it :) Thanks a ton mate !
No problem, good luck!
Where did u get the chip can it be use on a coupe 320
It was fitted when I bought the car but you can buy them on e30zone.net. They are available for a variety of different engines on the E30, including the M20B20 that will be in yours.
If the E30 is like the E34 is it a good idea to keep the mud flaps there, if not it can throw nasty stuff insider the bottom of the back bumper, its plastic and doesn't matter too much, but it also get to the bumper dampers holding the bumper and it mass them rust and in turn making the bumper sag
Yep I think the same would happen on the E30 too! At the very least the mudflaps protect the rear valance from the worst of the stone chips etc. The mudflaps have grown on me a lot, plus don't seem to see too many E30s with them on either. Big fan of the E34 too!
@@FootToPedal inside* make*
Yeah, I like early E34s especially as has detaiks thats better quality than the later E34s, my two 88 mod e34s has the same window rolling handels with steel and rubber like E30s and the same apolstering on the seats with the vinyl on the sides and the dash airbag on later e34s look ugly.. all these tiny details they changed out with more plastics and complications that was made easier to produce, showing when they really started cheaping down where they could lowering quality but making things more shiny, seen the change between my two 88s, and 91, 93 and 95 mods I had previously, from 91 its down hill in my opinion, changed a lot of things together with the M20 to M50 jump, none vanos M50 great engines but prefer the M20 for the sound and feeling. And the M50 vanos am I not interested in, one I had with vanos made problems
Yeah its interesting actually, the early E34s were very 1980s in terms of their design and technology, but a lot of things changed as time went on, including the introduction of the M50 engines you mention - I have heard about the VANOS issues on these! But yeah that steering wheel with the airbag doesn't look great and there was a lot of plastic being used. Having said that, 80s BMWs had their fair share of plastic on the interiors too!
Just got passed down one of these, but it hasn’t moved in like 10years. Don’t even know where to start, any forums I should join? Any tips?
Ah that's great, they make brilliant project cars I can say that! Yeah E30 Zone has to be one of the best forums out there, so much information on E30s on there and a great bunch of people there to help you out with anything. There's also a lot of groups on social media, specifically Facebook that can be worth joining too, especially if you need parts. The internet in general has a lot of information available on the E30s so is a great place to look around on for things.
@@FootToPedal Thanks, gonna definitely give the E30 Zone a look see. Look forward to more videos :)
Yeah it's a great site! Thanks plenty more to come 👍👍
Love a wagon
There's just something about the way they look!
Foot to Pedal exactly the lines are just so clean
Yeah totally agree 👍
How much did this cost you if you don’t mind
About £3.5k in 2019
Keep the mudflaps!
They've grown on me a lot, definitely keeping them now!
Mud flaps look better.
S52 swap that thing
I'm going to keep mine original but the S52 is a great engine swap
What are these worth these days
Seems to be whatever you like these days 😂 Right now even the cheapest E30s seem to be £6k and upwards, anything in nice condition can fetch £10k regardless of the model. I've seen 320i's sell for nearly £15k in recent months. If you're after a 325i you can expect to pay a premium and a 325i sport is probably over £20k in the current market
@@FootToPedal I’ve seen one for sale really cheap then. Needs quite a bit of work to the body but will prob cost £4K after restoration. Might have to go for it and hope nothing major is wrong with it.
Yeah thats good going. Mechanically they are pretty simple and generally strong, I'd be more worried about rust issues than anything but that's to be expected on any E30! Most of the time it's fixable with the right budget anyway 👍
@@FootToPedal perfect. Thanks for that.
Anytime!
2.0 is weak engine and it is thirsty like 2.5 l
Still a straight six though!
nothing like the howl of a BMW six & it’s manual, that’s the main trick!
Think he's being ambitious stating it's got 140bhp too....
