  • I think we all know that changes are coming, but none of us know exactly what impact this will have for us enthusiasts. Modern classics offer a remarkable compromise between driver engagement but sadly, their future too is uncertain.
    In this film, we examine the reasons why now is actually the best time to buy one.

    The car community is a great place. It's awesome to be able to bond over one thing that shares so many basic principles and yet is so diverse.
    Classics, modern or oldschool are amazing, they all tell a story, they all lived a live, and they all require varying level of attention with upkeep. I got an e30 touring aswell and i love the thing to death. Modern classics are great because they are often quite affordable to young enthusiasts who grew up with these cars. They're the perfect entry-drug for any future car-nut ...

    I had a 2000 BMW 330Ci, had it for a year but sold it to get a 2015 Mercedes A class. While I absolutely loved the Mercedes, I ended up selling it in January for another 330ci (a 2004 M Sport this time). Everyone thinks I'm mad but I'm very happy with my decision. It genuinely is new enough to be reliable and a daily yet it's just about old enough to feel special without being too old. I'd actually like to go older to be honest but I love it, such a good car!

    A cracking video pal, enjoyed whilst supping my morning cup of tea.
    Now, I have a question.
    Like yourself, I own an E86 but asking this with all bias removed and purely from the angle of this latest video of yours.
    Would you consider the E86 to be a modern classic and if not quite at the right age just yet to be so, do you think it will be?
    I did not buy my E86 as an investment or any such reason, I had always had a serious soft spot for them and the rare occasion I did see one on the road, well, it was an occasion. For me, the classic coupe lines, long bonnet housing a delicious straight 6 and indeed the interior, bespoke for the E86 (and E85 of course). So when an opportunity arose for me to get myself one as a weekend car if you like, I grabbed the chance.

    • @FootToPedal
      @FootToPedal  2 года назад +1

      Thanks very much, appreciate you watching!
      A very good question indeed - I suppose we must start by defining what a modern classic is. Certainly subjective, but I generally take the view point that they are cars which have the reliability and relative performance of cars of the current time, but are usually much more analogue and simplistic and clearly of times gone by. For me, the E86 is pretty much at modern classic status. The oldest models are now 15 years old and they are certainly from an era of BMW we will never see again - the ideology was so different back then. A timeless design housing the signature BMW straight 6, I think you are being perfectly reasonable to call one a modern classic, I certainly would at this stage.
      I think that status will only solidify as time goes on too. Stay tuned as there will be some E86 videos in this series, coming very soon!

    Great video, and I'm a believer, I've had an e86 z4 coupe for the last couple of years for exactly the reasons you suggest. I just have one comment - how do you balance it with the undeniable facts around vehicle emissions and the environment, especially if you have one of these old gas guzzlers as a daily? I wrestle with this a lot, so interested to hear your take.

    • @FootToPedal
      @FootToPedal  2 года назад +3

      Thanks Ashley, a very relevant point you bring up there.
      I have a relatively simple answer - annual mileage. The E30 for me is a bit more of a special occasion car. Throughout the summer I like to get it out as often as I can, but this time of year, due to the salt etc, it tends to stay tucked away until we got the odd day of nice weather. So that ultimately means the mileage I do annually is very small in comparison to most cars (maybe 1k to 2k). The E86 will probably do about 6k a year, so it's a similar story.
      You've also got to consider the emissions of actually producing a car, which are usually enormous. So if I'm using a 33 year old BMW that has served 5 or 6 people in its life, even if its dirtier for the environment when being driven, I am not sending it to the scrap and initiating the emissions release for the production of a new one.
      Believe it or not, there was a stat I covered in a video last year about the 2030 petrol/diesel ban, that the average classic car emits less emissions annually than a single return flight to the Mediterranean would. In other words, if you own an EV and went on holiday there once a year, you'd be doing more damage to the environment than I would in a year running a classic!

    • @ashleybrooks985
      @ashleybrooks985 2 года назад +1

      @@FootToPedal thanks for your reply, and I think that's a view many of us share. Perhaps the picture changes a bit of you were using the classic to do 20k miles a year, I'm sure there is a tipping point somewhere, where the full life cycle emissions start to be more favourable for the EV, even including those produced in manufacture. Time is running out though... The market for used EVs is growing. Let's hope the law continues to allow us to enjoy our old motors (in moderation).

      Yeah absolutely, I think there is definitely a tipping point, but I'd imagine you'd have to do quite a bit of mileage to hit that.
      I'm assuming most modern classic owners don't do crazy mileage so perhaps that helps the argument a bit.
      But yeah times are changing fast, ideally anyone who wasn't interested in cars would buy EVs such that the impact from the small number of ICE cars on the road each year is negligible, then hopefully we'd be safe. We shall see I guess!
