  • On a beautiful winter's morning, East Midlands Railway's 180113 is seen running from Bedford to Wellingborough. I was surprised to see this train pull in as I hadn't realised EMR had taken these on. This video forms part of the lockdown #TrainRideTuesdays series.
Class 180 "Adelante" Diesel Multiple Unit
    Manufacturer: Alstom
    Engine: Cummins QSK19, 750bhp
Transmission: Voith T312 BRE (3 speed)
    0:02 - 1st gear
    1:43 - 2nd gear (64mph)
    3:45 - 3rd gear (94mph)
Between 4:00 and 7:20 it seems to be cruising at about 100mph. From 7:20 it starts accelerating again and hits 125mph at approx 8:50. It stays at full speed for a couple of seconds before easing off.
You known when they're doing between 50mph and 60mph as there is a deep whine (1:10-1:30 and 9:55 - 10:05). Another distinctive sound these units make is the squealing from brakes as the train comes to a halt. This can be heard from 11:10 to 11:20.
The video was 11 minutes long, but I tagged on an additional clip from Kettering to Market Harborough which has the speedometer in view and it powering only up to 110mph. This starts from 11:24
If you don't mind all the noise (I don't!) then these are quite nice to travel on - and they don't have that film on the window that blocks out the signal like the 222s do.

The best video of a 180 on RUclips by far, great work! It's a shame that these have always been plagued with reliability issues, and bought in small numbers as, to me, they're far superior to any of the Voyager/Meridians.

100% echoed my views right there! I love the 180s too, always prefer them to voyagers and meridians and would very happily ride them again!

@@jordanjones7172 How so? The 180s have more power and a higher top speed; they may be from the same manufacturer and share some similarities but that's far from the same thing.

One thing I miss about the related 175s is that wine sound and exhaust rumble these Coradias always make when the engines are idling, the 180s also sound very similar at lower rpms to the 175s as well.

@@UndergroundEric Well that's true that's basicly with all QSK19 fitted DMU's... The DB has alot of issues with the Cooling of the 612s (QSK19 engines) too resulting in many emergency idle moments and lots of coolant being used... Same goes for the Stadler Flirt Bi-Mode with them Deutz V8 diesels.... DB always tells the drivers to notch it up gently and to use the HD brake where the engine gets revved up and the coolingfan can blow away all the heat.... Usually about 4km of HD Braking to let these engines cool down after being worked to the max :)
These Cl.180s they really are pushed beyond what they can withstand... Tooo long in that First Gear at 1900-2100rpm results in the biggest strain of this engine.
