  • How fast do the shorter 6 coach Intercity 125 High Speed Train (HST) sets accelerate? Enjoy as we depart Luton Airport Parkway on the short 20 mile sprint to Bedford aboard an East Midlands Trains (EMT) train. This is formed of two 'buffer' fitted ex Grand Central power cars and a shorter rake of just six rather than the usual 8 coaches, The service departed 10 minutes late - giving the driver plenty of incentive to drive this train 'flat out'. The result - superb acceleration to 125mph - continuous cruising at the 125mph limit - even if the final braking into Bedford was not quite strong enough to match the Railway Performance Society's fastest recorded Class 222 timing of 12 mins 24 seconds. A real treat to be aboard as these 40 year old diesel trains - the fastest diesel trains in the world - still continue to perform. The power cars were 'buffer fitted' and MTU engined 43484 and 43467. Performance was the best i have yet experienced aboard any HST - and proof that these trains are still one of the very best running on the UK rail network - especially when the interiors have been refurbished to a high standard. Sadly EMT have not upgraded the interiors to the standards seen on LNER or the new ScotRail trains. This video is a fitting tribute to the amazing High Speed Train - Intercity 125. Average Speed over this relatively short distance is approximately 95mph!!!! The scheduled journey time is normally set at 13.5 minutes.

    The great thing about the British InterCity network is that while it may not break speed records the trains can hold their top crusing speed of 125 mph over long distances thanks to a relatively good infrastructure and well maintained tracks. The perfect contrast is my home country (Germany). Our high speed trains can go uo to 200 mph but on most routes the tracks don't allow such speeds. So our "super cool" InterCity Express (ICE) on many routes is forced to crawl at amere 90-100 mph. Isn't that a shame?

      Love your comment so German train speeds are not always that fast, before covid kicked in and I voluntarily resigned I worked with a lot of Germans they were always polite courteous and had a good sense of humour, regards from Norfolk UK

      @@timtim4603 Thank you. I should however add that my comment was a bit outdated. In fact many upgraded and costum built high speed lines in Germany are now fully functional and travel times have decreased significantly. Typical for Germany: It takes decades to built but once it's completed it's great! Just like the new airport in Berlin. It's probably one of the best and most advanced airports in the world. Being good Germans we will of course conveniantly forget that its completion came with about a 10-year-delay!!! 😂🤣😅

    It's impressive to see out of 40 year old locos and coaching stock. They were recently re-engined, but still!
    Testament to the crews who maintain them. The Midlands ones are a bit rough riding, but I'm sure they stick to the tracks safely and they run fairly reliably (if doors do cause delays)
    MML (and all intercity routes) are desperate for full electrification, once the DfT regains some resemblence of sanity.

    Awesome acceleration, 100mph in just over 3 mins and full 125 by 5!!!! Deceleration is pretty swift too. Performance I'd say is not much less sprightly than a Meridian Class 222!!!

    • @railperf
      @railperf  5 лет назад +5

      only 5 seconds behind a Class 222 Merdian. The 222 has a slightly better start from rest. But the HST was actually starting to catch it up.

    wow around 3 minutes in at 200km/h i couldn't keep up, had to take my eyes off the screen, thats some speed, here in ireland we have Enterprise, Mark 4 push pull and 22s the enterprise locos and Mark 4s are 125mph capable however our train lines cannot handle that speed so they are limited to 100mph and the 22s are limited to 100mph

    Brilliant performance indeed. Normally 100-125 takes ages, but this run was no doubt helped by the falling gradient after Sundon off the Chilterns into brick clay country. Shame that this opportunity has now all but disappeared for good.

    Very interesting I loved the 125 comfortable, much better seats than new trains pity they couldn’t renovate them to run on electric as well like they have with new class hitachi would it have been cheaper than new flat pack furniture trains they introduced? , , ! 😃

      when the trains are running late and there is no congestion ahead, then drivers have an incentive to use the power and speed available. All too often many of the schedules - particularly on GWR - are quite slack, so those HST's are often running at less than 125mph to avoid arriving too early at the next station. This was an example of what happens when you need to make up time - and with stronger braking it could have been even quicker still!! The midland seems to be one of the few lines where schedules are quite tight - and harder running is required.

      Gwr has 4 mk3 sets running in Devon & Cornwall, those consists must have some wicked acceleration with only 4 mk3s for the power cars to push/pull.

      @Stuart J A long time ago (about 1979) going from Leeds to London we were diverted for engineering works (I seem to remember going through Lincoln!). When we got back on the main line the driver put the hammer down. I timed the mile markers at 135mph. We had waiters serving coffee and they had a helluva time trying to stay upright.

      On diesel yes. The 800s start away ok, but tail off over around 50mph it seems. On electric it's a very different story; 800s put IC225 and even Pendolinos to shame.

    • @joshwaaa
      @joshwaaa 3 года назад +2

      I reckon the 800s in Diesel mode still are quicker, they have around the same 0-50 but the 800s keep gaining speed where as the HSTs tend to tail off past 70 ish, I can't say for sure as I have never seen a direct comparison with both in Diesel mode but from what I can tell, the 800s seem slightly quicker with Diesel.
      Although that could be down the fact they are technically DEMUs rather than 2 power cars + 6 coaches.
      Having put this comment I mean no hate or anything towards your comment and I'm open to disagreements, this is just my opinion.

      @@joshwaaa
      Fair to say the 800 accelerates *differently* to the HST. As a regular user of the GWML, and after the first 800s arrived running in diesel mode only [this was before OLE energisation] in among the HSTs, I compared some 0-125mph start-to-pass timings (Swindon to Uffington, for example) and to my amazement 800s and 2+8HSTs were pretty much the same! 800s are better than HSTs 0-40mph, then same or worse in the mid-range, then a bit better 90-125mph.

      Sadly, DfT has instructed XC and GWR to cut operating costs further. Last I heard, GWR was planning to withdraw all its 'Castles' by the Dec 2023 timetable which neatly trashes their 15X and 16X DMU cascade plan.... Not certain but I think XC will be HST-less by same time.😒
      At least DfT diktat doesn't extend to Scotland, so Inter7City lives on😃👍
