I've wrestled all over the UK for the past 10 years and all the old guys love telling Haystacks and Big Daddy stories, the fued they had was legendary.
Watched him in person at Plymouth Guildhall. Massive wrestler who was a delight to watch. Only 52 when he died. Thanks for this video of his final resting place.
His Wife Rita lived in the family home until she passed away in 2019. Even the giant renforced furniture was still there when the house was up for sale . RIP to the both of them .
Great find mate. Like yourself I used to watch him when I was a kid with my Grandma.. he was a huge guy for sure, and by all accounts a very nice bloke. Thanks for bringing this to us. 🙂👍
Ahh, childhood memories of my whole family watching Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy......of course with the " goody " Big Daddy defeating him in the end ❤ RIP big guy ! I just read that Big Daddy sadly passed in 1997. Great memories flooding back because of these two ❤❤
'Bless him' He was wrestling at the Civic Hall Whitehaven in the early 70's when my full row of interlocked plastic chairs fell backwards & six feet to the floor because I was the first to sit down after the fight applause, suddenly he lifted me and the entire row of chairs right up onto the stage again gently patting my head saying...."There now lad, you're OK!" I was only about 11 & so proud. If I recall correctly he was teamed up with Crusher Mason & Cowboy Jack Cassidy.
I used to visit this graveyard. It's beautiful in the summer with squirrels running around. I never knew that he was buried there. Wonder who else was famous there too.
His son Ste, lived in Heywood, where I live, used to bump into him a lot, top lad. Quick story, Giant Haystacks "Martin" when he was visiting/living in Heywood, my mate went to see his son Ste and GH was sat on a stool washing his car, my mate knelt beside him for a chat and when said mate stood up, he head butted an hanging basket sending the contents all over GH, lucky for my mate GH took it as funny :)
Really nice chap, my dad was a ref ……and he arranged for me to get his autograph in person Wow he was a giant….but ever so gentle to me. I’ve still got his autograph in my old book…..👍
As an American wrestling fan I did not see much of Giant Haystacks, except his very last matches in WCW as Loch Ness. I understand he learned of his cancer around that time and that was why he didnt stay long in that company, instead flying home to England to live out the rest of his days. I've researched his life and career a little bit and it seems he was much like Andre, a mostly gentle giant, and a lonely guy on the road, who had a lot of trouble with a world that was often too small for him. And like Andre he was a massive star, if only really in Britain--I read that he even made a record once and that Paul McCartney was a huge fan of his too. RIP Giant Haystacks/Luke McMasters/Martin Ruane.
He played Big Bob in Paul McCartney's movie, Give My Regards to Broadstreet, and also appeared in the video to the song No More Lonely Nights, which featured on the soundtrack.
Saturday's at 4pm back in the 70's and 80's was the time for the wrestling. Great days indeed. Would have loved to have seen him in action in real life. What an absolute legend ❤️
Just found your video . This one brought back a lot of memories for me . I can remember watching the wrestling with my dad & at first I was so frightened of giant Haystacks because of his height . When he was in the ring with big daddy it was great they were my two favourite wrestling men . Thankyou once again
I was told by a friend who actually met Giant, he had a beautiful, beautiful bible, he read every day in his caravan. I went to watch wreatling live at my local icebowl when it first opened. I was 2nd row from the front, and I yelled so much at him, he dared to come after me. I stood telling him to "come on will". People thought I was for being murdered. Not a chance, he blew me kisses and winked ar me, applauding me. He was such a lovely guy, and when he found out my friend knew me, he was sorry he didn't meet me after the fight. Classic, RIP GIANT HAYSTACKS. GBNF 🌹🌹
Once met him in the mid eighties at his house in Alkrington, my dad was doing some work there and took us with him. Really nice man. Enormous, obviously.
Saturday afternoon wrestling, those were the days. Seen Giant Haystacks at the Birmingham Digbeth hall. My own Nephew was a pro wrestler, he was called Doc Dean (Ian Brown) sadly passed away in 2018 of a heart attack in Florida aged 48.
Great to know what became of this man. I remember him on tv when I was a kid in the 70s. Always amazed me because of his size and demeanour. Exciting to watch. RIP and God bless him. Thanks
A Classy presentation for a Class Act of Rasslin Lore! Being a huge Fan of Rasslin since i was a pup, me and my brother knew of Giant Haystacks long before he crossed over The Pond to The States! We earned our our spending money as youngsters doing chores and odd jobs. Then , we all would contribute to a couple of Wrestling Magazines, especially the ones that had International Rasslin News! That is how we heard of Mr. Ruane and his nemesis Mr. Crabtree...aka...Big Daddy! A Very Lovely Grave marker too! I'm ALL IN on this Channel! Cheers From Across The Pond in Ohio
Met him on the north sea ferry on his way to Holland for a wrestling bout in the early 80s on my way back to my unit in Germany A really lovely guy had a drink with him and a good chat 👍
I remember seeing him and the gang in the Ballard centre in Plymouth. Him, Big Daddy, Kendo Nagasaki with his mask, Mick Mcmanus and of course Pat Roach.
He may have wresteled a grand prix wrestler here in Nova Scotia Canada his ring name was cowboy kirk he is still alive today and is a grest friend and a wealth of stories from 60 s 70 s and 80 s he wresteled ANDRE THE GIANT , BULLDOG BOB BROWN, CUBAN ASSASIN, and othe big names like LEO BURK and BOBBY KAYE .
‘ Haystacks’ Martin drove Motorscrapers back in the day on motorway construction, I think he crossed paths with my brothers on different jobs before he became famous , RIP Plant men 🙏🏻
Someone told me that their uncle once worked on a building site with a man who was Giant Haystacks brother, and that he was a huge man who was as big as Haystacks himself! Have you ever heard of Haystacks's brother? Or could this man have been Haystacks himself and he was claiming to be Haystacks's brother because he didn't want too many people talking to him about wrestling and asking for autographs?
I don't know if you mentioned this but Haystacks and Daddy were tag team partners in the early days, going under the moniker 'the Guardsmen' or 'the Household Cavalry' or something like that.
They were indeed tag partners during the early part of Haystack's career and of Shirley Crabtree's comeback. Crabtree had been a star in the 1950's and early sixties, being known as "The Blond Adonis" and "Mr Universe" (at this time he had a very impressive muscular physique), but he retired in 1966. When Shirley Crabtree came out of retirement in the early 1970's he was briefly known as "The Battling Guardsman" (a reference to his time in the Coldstream Guards), but was already known as Big Daddy by the time he worked with Haystacks.
Lovely video. By all accounts they were both wonderful people. It's very touching to see them both together and with flowers marking their place of rest
It took me ages to find his grave, but when you go in through the main entrance turn right, go straight nearly to the end and then turn left, stax's grave is about half way down on the right 👍😎
He made big daddy's so small he was so powerful seen him pick up a heavy table at Yates wine high st 1980s early move it like a coffee table 1 handed people loved him . John Rooney st annes lancshire uk ps no threats from him public got so excited about hay stax .
A mate told me a story of when he was walking through this graveyard & he came across a bloke in tears, he asked if he was alright & he sobbed Giant Haystacks had died. He said he hadn't heard & its very sad. He said "You must of been close?" he said "I never meet the bloke!" My mate said "His passing has obviously affected you badly" the guy replied " You don't understand, i have to dig his grave!!" Still don't know if he was being serious?
One comment I've got to make, cemetery's in the u.k.definitely have that melancholy, slightly frightening, horror movie look and not in a bad way maybe because they're so much older than anything here in the U.S. I'm expecting to see Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing step out from behind a tree.
Years ago I used to watch a program as it was on a Saturday on STV as Dickie Davies used to host World Of Sport before it was ending they used watch Giant Haystacks Big Daddy and Andy Robins who had a real live Grizzly Bear as it appears in an Andrex toilet roll TV commercial who were wrestlers and Pat Roach from Aufedersen Pet was also on the show too I am dedicating this TV series to my old school friends who are both sisters as I hope to see them both again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyxxx

Thanks for the blast from the past 👍 loved watching all the wrestlers with my dad 😊
He was a phenomenal all round athlete. I saw him outsprint Sebastian Coe in the final straight of a 1500 metres at Crystal Palace in 1982.
I stood in front of The Giant, at Northgate Arena after he'd fought..I was around 11. He was a huge man & played the part brilliantly..
I used to visit this graveyard. It's beautiful in the summer with squirrels running around. I never knew that he was buried there. Wonder who else was famous there too.
Was never interested in fixed wresting but he was part of the furniture in the 70s.RIP big man🙏🏻✌️
