Jojo Mayer was well-known for his jazz drumming before he got into recreating electronic beats. Of all the contemporary drummers out there today, I think he's probably one of the few that could pull off the Buddy vibe. Also, the shirt is epic.
The ending where he mimics his heart beating is what Buddy did after some of his performances. And you can see he looks up to the sky and asks forgiveness from Buddy.
It's refreshing to see Jojo Mayer pay homage to a man who was inhuman on the drums. No one has, or ever will, become remotely close to the drumming ability of Buddy Rich. He was well-beyond gifted; he was divine; in a category of one called: Buddy Rich
Someday we'll watch a video of someone talking about Jojo the way he talks about Buddy here. It's so awesome to see a great musician talking about one of his heroes like this.
I think he's better than Buddy, technique-wise. His musicality is subjective but you can't deny JoJo's technique. It's pretty damn perfect. I believe what he says when he said that he was out of his element. He is. I could tell by the way he played. He really didn't sound too confident. But, man....imagine if we got to see them two duel each other. Whoa....
Man, if ever there was a drummer to actually pull off a Buddy Rich tribute orchastra & solo, it's Jojo. There are other drummers I like better, stylistically, but Jojo is a master of effortless technique and showmanship. I think Buddy would have approved.
whateverman666 Of drummers still alive today, far better choices are Butch Miles, Donny Osborne or Jeff Hamilton, to name just 3, who are 100% pure, bona fide Master Jazz drummers.
gospelplayer2 - General RAWR It's about concept, not technique. Any competent drummer can develop technique. Having the concept, the Jazz mindset, that the Master Jazz drummers had is far more important than having technique and being able to get around a drumset quickly. Jazz is a completely different animal and requires a totally different mindset than any other music. Unless you are 100% devoted to it, a drummer will never really have that Jazz concept, and it comes across in their performance. But, I'm not here to argue - - - - you have your opinion, I have mine.
MarkR1957 That's a little unfair. Even Buddy Rich himself was more a "big band" drummer than a "jazz" drummer. He was incredibly good at what he did, but he wasn't as good at be-bop as the greatest practitioners of that style. This shouldn't detract from his brilliance in any way (any more than the admitted inability of Yehuid Meuhin, Fritaz Kreilr and Jascha Heifetz to swing on violin diminishes their brilliance )- but the notion that there is a particular "jazz mindset" that he had and Mayer doesn't is very wrong, in my opinion.
I think this might be my favorite moment of a drummer idolizing another drummer. Just pure excitement, almost childlike admiration. And I love schwyzerdütsch!
There are so many really great drummers today, but I can think of no one more appropriate to pay tribute to Buddy Rich than JoJo Mayer, and that is a very, VERY high compliment.
thing about that Concert for the Americans show was right after that remarkable performance, he was rushed to the hospital because he had suffered a heart attack....tough bastard he was....RIP BUDDY
It's a real shame that the videos of some of the whole music performances were taken down. I personally find it a treat to see JoJo doing other styles like jazz when he's out of his usual electronic territory like when he was with Harry Sokal in Depart. He's great at live DnB, but when he takes a break to embrace his natural roots, like a breath of fresh air.
Szab S. wow chillax man. You sound like the kind of people that's pissed of about everything in their lives. If things don't work out, change your lifestyle. Making assumptions of people's heights and dick sizes on the internet is pretty lame, I suggest you to stop watching crappy videos about cacophonies and go practice . Then maybe one day you'll reach a level of execution in drumming half as good as Weckl's and hopefully stop commenting all the shit that crosses your depressed mind. Then If you post a video I'll be the first one to say "good job man, keep up the good work!"
he wasn't a show man he just loved sharing his art with people and it was one of his biggest motivation for music plus music itself his not show man at all his one of the greatest artist ever , he had talent, technique and creativity.
explaining things like 'wind-up' and stroke efficiency have been on my mind since I first hit a tom and felt the amazing rebound. But never was there any guidance on how the mechanics truly work in your favor. I saw drummers beat the crap outa everything, as if in anger. Only guys like Weckl and Jojo taught me to play pianissimo, which is ideal for studio work and it is truly amazing how much faster you get with proper fulcrum etc. Igoe is another breakthrough teaching talent that I owe everything to.
Great post, Buddy Rich to me remains ? The king of drummers around the world . He truly was a master of the shells. I still to this day play and enjoy his big band sound mixed with my other standards of jazz . In close in my Dj jazz biz.? I still even pop in a BR tune and occasionally? Someone will comment on it.
The thing that puts it all in perspective is Jojo mimicking the famous Buddy post-solo heart attack move , then looking up to Heaven to ward off the impending Buddy lightning bolt....that is true respect and love coming through from Jojo.
It’s allmost like you expect JoJo or buddy’s left hand to just keep playing while they get up and walk away to get a drink or whatever...GOODGOD ALLMIGHTY...UNREAL 👏👏👏
the thing with Jojo is he is not only a rolled class drummer if not arguably one of the very best I would love to see him in a drum duel with Steve Smith another of the world's very best all-around drummers as of 2017 but also the fact that he has such a love for the art and what buddy meant to him is conveyed so eloquently here and that to me is as special as the tribute itself because it brings inside to where JoJo's heart is and that is why I admire and respect him Beyond his insane chops technique and style buddy would no doubt appreciate and even probably tear up at this tribute to him there needs to be more artists that carry themselves with JoJo's level of class and dignity I wish he would come to Chicago I'd be in the front row
Growing up, my music teacher taught me about buddy. for those of you who drum. check out Rich vs Roach. anyway, we all know how special Jojo is. so cool to see him open up about Buddy like this. humble man. one day I'll meet Jojo and I hope to give him a thank you hug for being on this planet.
I really like how the first thin Jojo talks about is playing out of his comfort zone, a true good musician can play any genre; funk, metal, punk, reggae, jazz, classical. I doesn't matter what genera you play as long as you worked really fucking hard for your skills.
Hi Thom! Please follow this link for a longer version of the concert: www.srf.ch/play/tv/kultur/video/live-at-hinterhof?id=cf23363b-3e33-4c98-a1b4-5d3fa82f2294#t=1
Great playing JoJo, as usual! I’m working on the Big Swing Face album. Won’t be able to play it note for note, but just want to get the main vibe of every song. Going to take me a long time. But I’m learning so much from every song.
i have started to pay close attention to pedal and hand strokes, because you can play 'dumb' exercises for hours and truly get a feel for every limb. There is a satisfaction in executing superb doubles (especially in kik) at any velocity, or that perfect rim shot when you need it; ghost notes that are so subtle in subconsciousness..... The beat at this point is redundant or mechanical, but when you apply your groove later on, it is like heaven.
Oh well. I feel Jojo is beyond BR, because he is also a great teacher and a total inspiration to me personally. I would have never pursued mayer-moller or his heel up hybrid techniques if it weren't for his 'Secret Weapons" DVDs.
impresionante. parecia de escuchar a boby ritch. lo mejor. la bateria sencilla. asi es como se ve lo que se puede hacer con una bateria sencilla. o standard
What amazes me about these concerts is how much the band drives the drummer. However, when you watch Buddy Rich, it’s the complete opposite. It just goes to show you how over the top and In control BR was. I love watching the sheer athleticism of BR over all the other drummers who do these shows. However, past that, I prefer to listen to other drummers.
Plenty of young cats will be looking to Jojo the way he looks to Buddy; both are phenoms. After watching this, I'm one part inspired to nine parts intimidated. What's the next frickin' step? Dammit!
Buddy was the greatest drummer of all time. Even the true greats agree with that. His drums even sounded different when he played them...maybe tuning..maybe the way he hit them.
Dr. Feelgood Man, it is Vulcan. Jojo is another alien pretending to be human among us. Everyone knows that Buddy Rich was an alien with at least 8 arms. That's how he could pretend to play one-handed rolls.
the only thing I can fault Jojo on here is that his drums and cymbals are too dark and meant for combo playing. He needs to crank up that snare and get some cymbals meant for cutting through big bands if he wants to sound like a big band drummer. He clearly has the chops.
Agree and find it weird that his snare is so lowly tuned. He usually has that shit tighter than a nuns vagina. He even has like a very limited share that's like 20 ply or something stupid so it doesn't warp
The nel yeah but this is a tribute to Buddy Rich, not Mel Lewis, hence why I think he ought to have used brighter setup. It's irrelevant what Mel does.
well im sure the idea isnt to sound just like buddy rich. Its just to play some music associated with buddy and give a tip of the hat. its more this statement i found odd. '' He needs to crank up that snare and get some cymbals meant for cutting through big bands if he wants to sound like a big band drummer'' . Like that is what it means to be a big band drummer. Many different drummers have different ideas of what sounds best in a big band. To each their own though.
The nel ok but the main criticisms on this video seem to be that he doesn't sound like Rich. Many have postulated he doesn't have the chops, I was posing an alternative theory that he doesn't sound like Rich because his drums don't sound right. I think he has plenty of chops but the wrong tone. Maybe the point isn't to sound like Rich, but if it was I think the right gear has a ton to do with it.
Fuck swiss german is an incompehensible language is quite remarkable to notice how different is the german language within a relatively small geographical zone. He is from Zurich and I speak fluent german and for me is almost imposible to understand him. Anyway his drumming speak for himself and thank god he doesn't have to speak in swiss german
Jojo Mayer was well-known for his jazz drumming before he got into recreating electronic beats. Of all the contemporary drummers out there today, I think he's probably one of the few that could pull off the Buddy vibe. Also, the shirt is epic.
Any list of greatest living drummers without this guy on it can be safely ignored.
The ending where he mimics his heart beating is what Buddy did after some of his performances. And you can see he looks up to the sky and asks forgiveness from Buddy.
Jojo mayer...One of the best drummers today
It's refreshing to see Jojo Mayer pay homage to a man who was inhuman on the drums. No one has, or ever will, become remotely close to the drumming ability of Buddy Rich. He was well-beyond gifted; he was divine; in a category of one called: Buddy Rich

zdrumrguy I agree, but you have to take into consideration that buddy came up with most of this stuff on his own.
Man, if ever there was a drummer to actually pull off a Buddy Rich tribute orchastra & solo, it's Jojo. There are other drummers I like better, stylistically, but Jojo is a master of effortless technique and showmanship. I think Buddy would have approved.

MarkR1957 it wasn't about being a master of jazz its being a master of drums/technique in general which Jojo no doubt is one of the best
gospelplayer2 - General RAWR It's about concept, not technique. Any competent drummer can develop technique. MarkR1957 Thanks for that! But read what i said, this was a tribute to Buddy Rich not to Jazz. As Jojo even explains in this interview

You know you've got amazing technique when Jojo Mayer approves and praises your technical abilities...
It's a real shame that the videos of some of the whole music performances were taken down. He's great at live DnB, but when he takes a break to embrace his natural roots, like a breath of fresh air.
I can't think of a better drummer than Jojo to do Buddy's hand techniques. Left hands out of this world
Dick Cully has a pretty sick set of hands too.
+blapis89 It means you must have quite a narrow knowledge about real drummers...
Szab S.

Maestro at work! Proud to see him live a couple of times.
so Jojo's obsession began after he lost that drum duel to Buddy on the Muppet Show?
💀💀
My favorite modern drummer, by miles and miles. Thanks for this Jojo!
he wasn't a show man he just loved sharing his art with people and it was one of his biggest motivation for music plus music itself his not show man at all his one of the greatest artist ever , he had talent, technique and creativity.

one of the best modern drummers shining a light on the greatest of all time, nice!
Buddy would have been proud! :)

a feines haus, der jojo. immer mit einem blick über den musikalischen tellerrand auf sein publikum.
in love with drums³. superb.
Does his shirt have a picture of Harambe
i fucking need that shit
fucking meme magic, man. that shirt existed over a year before the Harambe incident.
1952 drum battle: Krupa and Rich. Make sure you hold on to your socks, or they're gettin' blown off.
beautiful
WOOOOOOOOW....UNREAL...👏👏👏👍👍🙏🙏🥁🥁
Jojo is so talented...what an amazing artist!
I really like how the first thin Jojo talks about is playing out of his comfort zone, a true good musician can play any genre; funk, metal, punk, reggae, jazz, classical. I doesn't matter what genera you play as long as you worked really fucking hard for your skills.
Toll JoJo mal wieder im Swingkontext zu hören und sehen! Cool! :-)

Beautiful, thank you for sharing!
Great playing JoJo, as usual!
I’m working on the Big Swing Face album. Won’t be able to play it note for note, but just want to get the main vibe of every song. Going to take me a long time. But I’m learning so much from every song.
Jojo mayer is awesome! I really like him. My favorite drummer. Also buddy rich of course
Anyone know where I can get that shirt?
In the old haberdashery where my mum usually buy her things I guess...
Jojo is the man... he can just afford everything! :)
+Dr. Feelgood lol
The shirt in the link has a random gorilla, Jojo´s has Harambe, not the same thing dude
i have started to pay close attention to pedal and hand strokes, because you can play 'dumb' exercises for hours and truly get a feel for every limb. Great share, thanks
love to play those VF Buddy Rich sticks..they're great! ;)
Fabuleux 👍👍👍👍😍
I hate that there is not a single drumming video, where an idiot comments 'not quite my tempo' WE GET IT, we watched the movie too!.
Oh well. I feel Jojo is beyond BR, because he is also a great teacher and a total inspiration to me personally. I would have never pursued mayer-moller or his heel up hybrid techniques if it weren't for his 'Secret Weapons" DVDs.
impresionante. parecia de escuchar a boby ritch. lo mejor. la bateria sencilla. asi es como se ve lo que se puede hacer con una bateria sencilla. o standard
Thanks for that! Very nice!
One of the Best out there...
Jojo is a master in his own right. Buddy is Buddy, Jojo is Jojo, both unique.
Genuinely made me emotional. I'll be a drummer of ten years this September. Needless to say, it's time to start taking lessons.
4:48, is he wearing a Harambe tshirt? what year was this video made?
I am german, I lived almost three years with someone from switzerland. But I don't understand anything. Thanks for the english captions.
Jojo is certainly the world's formost expert and Buddy Rich Historian.
Legend and seems like a nice guy.
This piece on Buddy Rich is part of a documentary project with and about Jojo, so there's more to come! Check jojomayer.com and srf.ch for updates.
Well that was super fun :)
The part at the end with the bass drum, consecutive crashes and stick tricks was a page out of the great Sonny Payne's book.
Sonny Greer was the source for most of that.
I love you Jojo Mayer!
What an amazing Man Jojo is.
Love Jojo!
Jojo you are my inspiration, with budy rich.
High drummers
Is that fucking Harambe on his shirt?
it vermy much seems so
but this video is from february 2015
o.o
What amazes me about these concerts is how much the band drives the drummer. However, when you watch Buddy Rich, it’s the complete opposite.
It just goes to show you how over the top and In control BR was. I love watching the sheer athleticism of BR over all the other drummers who do these shows. However, past that, I prefer to listen to other drummers.
Well, I've got to be honest, Jojo: I'm fascinated by Buddy, but you're a huge inspiration too.
Mayer, who was quoted as saying jazz is dead, playing a tribute to BR. That's rich.
That ending solo. My God.
Einfach großartig!!!
Danke, sehr spannende Geschichte!
great video.
Nice job.
Awesome stuff.
Great!
wow...that was funtastik!
Una traduccion en español por favoooor !
MY GOD HE IS GREAT
As a speaker of Hochdeutsch, his Schwyzerdütsch is just so interesting to me.
Plenty of young cats will be looking to Jojo the way he looks to Buddy; both are phenoms. After watching this, I'm one part inspired to nine parts intimidated. What's the next frickin' step? Dammit!
I specially love the drummers with suit and tie
Jojo's grown very old. Great guy.
If you're lucky, it can happen to you. The opposite isn't very pleasant.
can we PLEASE focus on the intense awesomeness of that shirt for a moment???
Excellent T shirt.
WOW!
Is this going to be available as a dvd release?
You look good in a suit Jojo!!
hey , does anyone know if this is out on DVD or anything ? Full concert i mean ? Thanks
Beautiful performance. Jojo is probably the only drummer that could have done this tribute.
Steve is the ONLY other that comes to mind.
JoJo is the Shizznit
where can I find the song in this video of Jojo Mayer and the band playing?
Buddy was the greatest drummer of all time.
Even the true greats agree with that.
His drums even sounded different when he played them...maybe tuning..maybe the way he hit them.
When he had his band, Buddy's roadie tuned his drums and it was definitely the way he played, not hit, them.
What language is he speaking? Is that klingon?
Swiss german:)
He's from Zurich
Dr. Feelgood Man, it is Vulcan. Jojo is another alien pretending to be human among us. Everyone knows that Buddy Rich was an alien with at least 8 arms. That's how he could pretend to play one-handed rolls.
German
+Dr. Feelgood Sounds dutch to me.
Not even CLOSE ! ! !
the only thing I can fault Jojo on here is that his drums and cymbals are too dark and meant for combo playing. He needs to crank up that snare and get some cymbals meant for cutting through big bands if he wants to sound like a big band drummer. He clearly has the chops.
Agree and find it weird that his snare is so lowly tuned. He usually has that shit tighter than a nuns vagina. He even has like a very limited share that's like 20 ply or something stupid so it doesn't warp
to dark? Ever heard of a drummer named mel lewis?
The nel yeah but this is a tribute to Buddy Rich, not Mel Lewis, hence why I think he ought to have used brighter setup. It's irrelevant what Mel does.

wat goed en leuk jojo top
wow man.
Und Buddy ist natürlich der Größte!!!

+Juande Montelongo I think that's because it's Dutch...
+Juande Montelongo Nope nevermind it's just fucked German haha
I'm Irish, Lived in konstanz and understand Züridüütsch. What's wrong with you germans? It's High Alemannisch.
What a cool dude.
"SMITHERS! Look at all those Germans playing jazz!!!'
Swiss not german
I gladly stand corrected :)
Where is the full performance?
what does that music's name? I really love that music
Jazz
link to full performance!
I want a pineapple now, don't know why.
Is anyone else facing problems with the video reproduction quality? I mean, it's like the video is cut in a series of horizontal lines.
called aliasing and its when a camera cant handle the quality its producing so very fine edges become lines, in this case all of them lol
