Matt Garstka on a technical level is out of this world, he might be the best drummer out there nowadays. He's able to play stuff that 99,9% of the time seems humanly impossible, especially in AAL. But man, the groove and feel that Navene brought to this band has no rivals and to me was never topped by Matt! Everytime I hear or watch this guy play it makes me want to go behind my drumset and hit everything like a madman, screaming. Fucking hell I love Navene.
Well, I think maybe you'd like to do a retrospect since the latest AAL album Parrhesia is out already? Matt has evolved so much in the recent years and his technique, songwriting and finesse are only getting fleshed out further as displayed in the album.
here we go again with soul, groove guys on internet omg bro you are contradicting to yourselves, "Mat is great he can play everything, but this guy grooves(not being able to move limb from crashes all the time)" How can Matt play everything if he doesnt have groove ?
I love Navene’s playing. He is a powerhouse drummer. From what i heard he is a self-taught drummer and for him to learn AAL’s tunes is insane. You can’t compare Navene and Matt. Both of them are extremely talented in their own right. Two different beasts on the drums
@@michaelsalcedo3337 he ain't lying. you can always watch drum lessons on youtube or be shown a few things from a buddy. I don't know a single drummer who's learned the way pianists learn from an instructor showing up at 8am every morning.
@@Mohamed636 For sure ! What you’re saying is indeed correct as well! To me self taught means a person who learns in his/her own way and not having to go through music school or University programs like Berklee etc. Im with you there 100%
Blasts have their time and place, but would sound incrediblly out of place with this music. Also ever seen him in other bands cuz he blasts in a decent amount of them.
+BurnThePope0514 I was applauding his technicality as opposed to the usual cut and paste blast beat drummers that seem to make up a sizeable majority of this site
yeah its actually pretty annoying how much people blast beat. they are cool and one of my favorite things to do but they are only good in moderation. people write entire songs around blast beats and single stroke fills. its fucking repetitive.
Guys, I really REALLY appreciate this music... In a way that is socially matters. You, and every person that moves the human race forward in music, in art generally, in science etc. Is the only thing that human race should fight for its existence...
this drummer fucking kills it. beats the living shit outa his kit and it grooves. idk why every body loves the new drummer so much this dude is incredible too
When I saw them live here in Mexico it was incredible. To watch these masters at work was all I needed. I could care less about fog and lights lol then I waited after the show to get signatures xD
By far the most talented group of musicians ever. Each, in there own right, are musical geniuses. I'm waiting for the world to realize the talent of this group.
Goddamn he breaks a stick picks up another one in the middle of the song and yet his performance is still flawless! I wouldn't have noticed at all if I didn't see it
How aggresive and innovative move from naveen, his has own credibility to play this legendary song. He just like put honey in tea. Same Line but different taste.
I must say, as a guitarist and big fan of Tosin, Navene is my favourite musician from AAL. Every single fill he makes is just... beautiful, so musical. Man this guy might be my new favourite drummer.
Matt Halpern and Navene are the new wave of drummers whose show is not "how many drums can I play, or sticks can I twirl", although I love Terry Bozzio. Small kits, played like demons from another world, is the style, and they rule.
@iloveskateboarding45 I normally would have angled that out but he was so smooth with it I had to leave it in . Stick recovery is an art within itself.
I don't want to shit on Garstka...but I really think Navene does this band justice. He plays so confidently and consistently. I could be wrong but it seems like even Tosin can be seen jamming harder and playing more comfortably knowing there's a solid backbone to the song.
You guys arguing about Navene doing his own thing alot of it, but you have to remember, almost all the drums in the AAL songs, arent actually made by Navene, They are programmed. So obviously he is gonna do his own thing on stage because he didnt really make them to begin with, and whether or not he does "too much" he is so much of an amazing drummer that he can still keep the rhythm of the song perfect and improvise anywhere he wants.
Your opinion fails to capture the raw complexity and ingenuity of the music and how it is played. Simply playing it is a feat of legend. Great movement is occurring in areas that you obviously cannot comprehend.
I know, I love that part. That was one of the most sincere looks of shock ever. And then he looks at Navene and nods, almost as if to confirm whether Tosin was okay and if they could proceed. Their reality crumbled for a sec. (I exaggerated, but yeah)
This band is SO amazing! It sucks that you wanna just sit there and stare in awe at their ability to play very complicated music, live, instead of rocking out for which this music was intended. Tosin should tell everybody to circle pit at the beginning of the song!
@gregatron11 He plays to a bass track he makes...that was when i was with them 2 months ago. No click He's a guitarist to and bass player don't forget. I asked him the question specifically.
how bout we all agree that instead of placing people on ridiculous pedestals, we acknowledge that the music he plays is incredibly complex to perform in studio, let alone on stage. there for any mistake he makes is justified.
He fucks up lots of times, more than a lot of fast metal guitarists I think. But thats what I like about him, he's just playing music, and making it sound human and real if you know what I mean :)
did navene slow a bit at 5:24 or I'm crazy? I'm just asking this guy is absolutely amazing! Koperweis, Haake, Halpern, Duplantier and Dailor are the best drummers in the modern "era" of heavy metal
Hey sickdrummerdudes, it would be great if you could get some JP Kaukonen, since Circle of Contempt are about to release some new stuff, and I'm guessing they will tour in US also. Cheers from Finland, thanks for awesome videos!
i think navene has a stronger groove and is extremely powerful. matt has a lot more gospel chop finesse that he brings to the sound which is cool -- i wouldn't say he's an upgrade; both have attributes that make them essential.
Joshua Cameron i can understand where you're coming from there. i am sort of the same way: i like the grooves to establish a little bit of breathing room instead of a song feeling like one big solo, which is something navene does very well. on the plus side, though, matt's chops are so damn tasty.
Joshua Cameron Trust me, dude, go see 'em live with Garstka. There is nothing convoluted at all. The shit is tight and powerful with Matt. It's unreal.
***** Technically Matt is way more skilled, and he's more broad. He does have a tendency to "overplay" the songs but in this kind of music i think it fits.
***** i agree with you, he is more technically skilled (although any drummer who lands this gig is definitely technically skilled), and his stuff fits. i just think navene's work fit better.

Love how he uses the ride in so many fills...
While so many are blasting for the sake of it this guy is just laying waste to the lot of them. What a performance

Navene dominates the drumkit, he's also filling up a major part in their sound since they're a trio, the heavy hitting really works well here
Navene delivers an unhumanly musical element to his mad smashing that is rare even among the ultra-skilled drummers out there.
this drummer fucking kills it. beats the living shit outa his kit and it grooves. idk why every body loves the new drummer so much this dude is incredible too
Garstka and
Navene are both great drummers but Matt is just out of this planet !
Love the song especially the drummer going berserker. Heavy as a sun turning into a black hole.
that's some Japanese metaphore shit right there, lol :P
That unbridled energy of this drummer could set fire to the face on fire.
get goosebumps just watching him...damn!
Navene makes a freakin 4 piece sound like the most amazing thing ever. I love the talent he has of what he can do with a four piece

Putting the Animal in Animals as Leaders Golly!
The bell hit at 1:07 is awesome!
My fav part too! A simple addition yet really freaking awesome!
How aggresive and innovative move from naveen, his has own credibility to play this legendary song. He just like put honey in tea. Same Line but different taste.
Honestly, the most impressive thing about this video is the stick change at 2:32 without even slipping on the time.
I must say, as a guitarist and big fan of Tosin, Navene is my favourite musician from AAL. Every single fill he makes is just... beautiful, so musical. Man this guy might be my new favourite drummer.
Missed an opportunity to see these guys live. Spent the entire night in my room, listening to their live videos. It didn't make up for it.
The most unfair part is that Navene is a genious on guitar too. Damn multitalents, they make me feel I've wasted my life!
Matt Halpern and Navene are the new wave of drummers whose show is not "how many drums can I play, or sticks can I twirl", although I love Terry Bozzio. Small kits, played like demons from another world, is the style, and they rule.
man, it just blows me away how well he compensated when he dropped or broke that stick. hell of a drummer, right there.
........................................ i dunno man i think this is the best animals as leaders thing that ever and will happen
I never want this song to end. ever
Brutal epic!
hell yeah. representing my area. animals as leaders rule
No wonder his china is broken. Great band, great song, great players, great music and nice quality video!
There's not a single group of musicians out there that are more... perfect. Exponentially better every. single. time. I. hear. them.
Damn AAL used to be metal as fuck! Wish they would go back to being more of a "metal" band.
Incredible band.
just recently got the band's album. i have to say this is the best shit i heard in ages. i hope they keep playing together!
Fucking love this band. Navene is definitely a huge influence for me.
If you can't understand/follow this and you consider yourself a musician, you really aren't. Navene kills it!
It's nice to see how much they've improved over the years
Those drums sound sick!
Navene's my hero
adjusts his snare like 4 times, breaks a stick gets a new one ect... if you weren't watching you wouldn't even notice. navene rules so hard
Wow. This guy is insane. Essentially a metalcore drummer who knows how to do algebra.
Very good version. Navene is heavier in his playing. And Matt is more jazzy. Both are outstanding drummers.
@iloveskateboarding45 I normally would have angled that out but he was so smooth with it I had to leave it in . Stick recovery is an art within itself.
Having a medium-big drumkit, I REALLY fucking love seeing guys rip the shit out of a small kit and make awesome music.
this is such an amazing video. great quality!
one sick drummer indeed! i love the little fill at 2:10 in the video!
@bea5ToloG They are Frontline Drums. Navene is now endorsed by Tama.
I don't want to shit on Garstka...but I really think Navene does this band justice. He plays so confidently and consistently. I could be wrong but it seems like even Tosin can be seen jamming harder and playing more comfortably knowing there's a solid backbone to the song.
Gotta agree with you here. They seem to flow together better with this lineup in my opinion.
so fking awesome badass ending in this song...thats pure metal

Tosins guitar in this vid is for sale right now!
It has experimental Dimarzio’s in it. Price is nuts, but if you can afford it, go for it (49,999 USD)

I love how Navene plays with authority

I had no idea he was ever in AAL!
Hell no, lets just do it ourselves. It's GENIUS!
the bell on that ride sounds so sick gotdamn!
i think navene should be in the front of the stage just because they are a trio and his playing adds to the overall visual

@Nikomeus Actually Misha programmed all the drum/synth parts of the album as well as a few guitar parts as well.
performance-wise, absolutely. but in terms of technicality and pure skill I think Matt is much more capable.
