My RUclips feed often has videos of what people eat in a day...
So, I thought to myself, "Self, do the viewers actually know what and HOW MUCH these little critters eat EVERYDAY???" I'm not even sure I knew how much!!
This was a fun video to do as it answers one of my most asked questions, and allowed me some company while doing chores!

I love these videos, you share every aspect and every sound, there's nothing quite like it, but we get a great glimpse of your farming life. It's almost like being there with you. In a pack, dogs lick each others ears to keep them clean. It can also just be an affectionate grooming thing, but if Kinsey is licking a particular ewe's ears often, you might want to check the ewe's ears for infection.
We had a little dog-Gretchen- who used to lick the cats ears all the time--when we got another dog after Gretchen passed the poor cat would go to get her ears licked and couldnt figure out why that "stupid" (I'm remembering the cat's expression) dog didnt react to the same clues Gretchen did. As always, Sandi, great job--I look forward to each of your videos!
I'm not so much a numbers gal-- but I love getting a glimpse of the science behind your operation. We need to know ALL that it takes. Growth literally and metaphorically isn't just luck. Success is hard work. PS: I love that my favorite sheep farmer wears holey overalls AND a Pandora bracelet while she scoops manure and cuddles baby birds. You are awesome. Best to you always!

I'm always worried that one evening, Sandi is going to look at her wrist and notice something missing... Then she spends all night internally re-examining every ewe she assisted that day!

I am having a hard time trying to figure out what the 945kg of "calich" is. For the maintenance ration really is. RUclips could be spelling ot wrong. I am new to sheep and have 4, 1 buck and 3 ewes. I justbwant to make sure I'm not making simple mistakes that could harm them.
@@carlaanderson7102 Please discuss with veterinary doctor in your aera. Ration depends on weight of sheep, quality of feed etc. Also be in touch with nearby sheep farmers, get advice from them. 🙏

Very good suggestions.
May I also add that the soil, climates, Seasons, & humidity ranges are very important.
Also, whether the sheep spend time in pastures & what grows there.
I would not give them any city water because of the chlorine, chloramine, fluoride, or other chemicals the utilities companies put in their water supply. If you use well water, have it tested by a lab for things bad for sheep, perhaps every 6 months, or after very heavy rains or flooding. The wrong pathogens can be disastrous for all animals & people.
I had no idea how fast sheep can get deadly diseases, & so many different ones. Goats are similar in the same way.
If you have a local Farmers or Sheep Herders Assocation, County Farm Extension Ofc., Or State Agriculture Dept. they can give you brochures, information, & probably training classes, that apply to your geographic area.

@@terryst9835 it might be a family farm but it's factory raised, or atleast that's what we in Scotland call factory farming as they are in a barn from when they are born until the die
@@HootMaRoot they're in the barn only because of predation pressure in her area. She'd lose most of the lambs and some ewes yearly if they were outside simply due to predation. But it's not a factory farm. Those in North America are absolutely gigantic, many times bigger than Sandi's. Think several thousand animals in one barn or on one range/plot of land, like several thousand cattle ranging on one piece of land, or a few thousand chickens in cages in a barn
@@LeafGreenLPs it's still small scale factory farming. I grew up near small scale sheep factory and many sheep farms. but I would say she does look after the sheep a lot better than any of the big places do

It just so happens I was on u tube one day and I noticed a young lady talking about sheep, well I was hooked, I watched a few of your vlogs and decided to start from vlog 1 and I caught up last month. I'M HOOKED! I can't wait for the next vlog. You have come such a long way and even tho I am not into sheep, I find you such a hard working person and very educational. And don't let people get you down, your doing a great job! I saw where other farmers mentioned your name about hoof grooming. AWESOME!

Ok.....my OCD just kicked in. I’m coming to clean the cobwebs out of the feeders in the lamb barn and clean off the proportioner too! Lol. Great system girl.
What paper is your husband working on? Those folks that thought farmers were dim just got an education. I think farmers have to be very smart/clever/resourceful/hard-working to not go belly up. Such hard work. Thank you farmers for your persistence and work to feed the world
Thank you for the good shout out to farmers!! They have to be frugal, a chemist, decide which chemicals to purchase for different years for which old and new weeds that appear, "weather guesser" bookkeeper, mechanic, good banker, to always save money and not to have to borrow it for operating from year to year, it takes us well over thousands of dollars each year to get seed, chemicals etc. purchased for each
year. This doesn't include machinery, repair bills for machinery and other unexpected expenses. Farming is enjoyable most if the time but, is a big business and a lot of work.
Mark has been working on a Nuffield Scholarship. This is the work he was doing when he traveled to Australia and New Zealand earlier this year. Unfortunately the trip was cut short due to COVID. You can watch his travels on his blog here. ruclips.net/video/BDQWDM-6NjQ/видео.html
Early this year Mark went to Australia and New Zealand on a Nuffield scholarship, to study other country’s crop management. He has to write his paper on everything he learned in the last two years, and how he can incorporate that information into his operation. The time in New Zealand was cut short due to COVID.
Hey Sandi! Terry is bang on! Mark is working on a Nuffield Scholarship which involved some travel, and now he has to write up his report to finish it up!

Thankfully, I have few enough horses that I can buy my feed directly from my local feed mill already mixed to the ratios I need. Right now, I only use two mixes - a Senior feed for the older ones and a performance mix for the other adult horses. Two kinds of hay, served in flakes - alfalfa and timothy. Who gets what type depends on the nutritional needs of the animal and the time of year. Supplements are given to each individual horse per feed (twice daily) and tailored to specific needs. No youngsters or breeding stock to contend with which is nice. I'm math phobic, so kudos to you for balancing and mixing your own ratios!
What great information, and all that goes into keeping your flock healthy and in production.Makes those feed sheets all that more important. I love your dog licking the sheep's ears. I had a dog that would go out and lick the calf ears and always joked that he like his rawhide ears on the hoof!!

Even for a long term viewer it is really really interesting and thought provoking. The amount each sheep eats per day in particular. Wish I could weigh out a days ration for one sheep to get a visual on it!
How in heavens name do you see a profit when you spend so much on feed. I know you grow your own when you can but the cost involved in growing harvesting and storing etc aren’t nil. The extra care and dedication it takes to balance out the feed because they’re raised inside and maintenance of all the equipment. Extraordinary and most interesting in an are you serious way. Love it. Thank you.

I love your feeding setup. Your head for business, ag and livestock goes a long way toward making a successful operation. And of course in farm lingo that means perhaps break even sometimes! It's all such a gamble, isn't it? But we love farming anyway. lol Kinsey cracks me up, licking ears and biting the tires on the feeder. Silly doggo! Our neighbour growing up ,fence his yard and put sheep on it. They have a very nice looking yard. I don't remember any major droppings, but then I was a kid and didn't care.
We need to get Mark one of those little vacuum cleaners for his keyboard 😂
I _love_ mowing! We had 2 acres we kept mowed while I was growing up. Give me tunes, a drink bottle, and I'm happy for a couple hours or until more gas is needed. I'd be more than happy to do yours if I weren't 3000 miles away. 😉

Speaking of feeding, you mentioned a bit ago that you wanted to try feeding later to prompt the ewes labor/lamb later in the morning. Are you going try that this lambing session?
With cows if you feed them late afternoon early evening the bulk will calve durning daylight. The idea is they get a big full gut of food, sit down to ruminate and the pressure( lack of room in the gut cavity) will kick off labour. There is also homeopathic remedies that are good for inducing and priming the uterus for speedy labour. Same for mating.
I have a good friend who was looking for a ram. She went to a farm and she just walked up to the ram pen and the one that came directly to her and wanted her his face rubbed and to say Hi. She got one of his offspring. She aways said you don't have a mean animal on the farm. Big, strong and eager to be with the girls, is different than being mean.

It’s a big piece of plastic mixing around with the food how do you stop the sheep from eating it and I love the way you have being putting your hair up with the bandanna
I think the sheep would mostly spit it out or not even bother with it since in previous videos they seemingly ignore the pieces of plastic as they know it isn’t food. Since those pieces are pretty big. I could be wrong though.

I saw that when she picked it up and dumped it in the mixer. Thought she would show us her taking it out, but did not. Just worried it would tangle some how in the augers.
It had me on edge for a good chunk of the feeding. I bet she pulled it out as she was feeding though, I've seen her do that in the past.

That’s a good video! Very helpful information, something to go by and keep in mind if I ever decide to sheep farm. I watch the new borns and how cute they are and how you make me want to run out and buy up 1,000 sheep, you make it look easy.

This was really interesting because all you normally see is people feeding but you don’t know what and how much goes into sheep feed or any animal feed most people know about dog and cats food etc but not large animal feed so thank you
Thanks Sandi, The investment in machinery and acreage needed for one person, with a little help, to produce a continual crop of lambs is an eye opener.

I know that it is very important that humans get their minerals. Human body will use organic mimeral to help with some vitiman shortages. A gpod organic company ( T R C has a 75 organic mineral liquid package ) could a mineral shortage in some ewe's be the still birth problem ? Please Take Care of your self Plus Be Very Care Full around all Farm Equipment.

Very interesting.......there is so much that is done that brings a lamb from conception to birth and beyond.......to the meat produced...the feed is just one part of the process......wow.....thank you for taking the time to explain it all.
math was never my strong suite but even just knowing the averages helped us figure out feed! one horse in a bad cold winter can easily eat up to 5tons of hay with about a 2 ton grain feed put with it(going from November to may) so average for 5 horses was about 30 ton of hay and 10 tons of grain and each actually ate diffrent! the hard keeper got twice as much grain than the easy keepers but they ate more hay....so knowing the average and having some left over was always nice on the pocket book. NOW I'm just down to one easy keeper but this will be his first winter without a buddy to keep warm with...I see his grain ration as doubled already and as much hay as he can clean up each day....here's to hoping we guessed right🤞

Aha! Another dog who licks ears! I have one too. She licks cat ears. Cats love it. They sidle up to her when they want to be groomed and she happily obliges, starting with ears.
Oh goodness, when your dog was going after the wheels on your feed cart I died. My dog does this with my lawnmower wheels. Silly pup!
I could honestly watch you pet the Billy's for an entire video. Calm spa music in the back and you taking turns between the three of them. They look so relaxed and happy.

For safety, you should dump the mineral in your bucket with your haylage or corn silage and dump it into your TMR mixer wagon that way.
