  • Stefan Pape sits down for an extended interview with director Steven Soderbergh to talk about his new film, Unsane, which was shot on an iPhone.
He gives a great answer about shooting the movie on a phone, and talking about 'the future of movie making'.
He also talks about his new film High Flying Bird, also shot on an iPhone, a film they had a rough cut of 8 hours after the shooting completed.
Unsane stars Claire Foy, Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharoah and Amy Irving.
A young woman is involuntarily committed to a mental institution, where she is confronted by her greatest fear--but is it real or a product of her delusion?
It is released on the 23rd of March in the UK and the US.

I like that he used a iPhone I’m a filmmaker and I use the iPhone for shooting because it’s not about your device it’s about your creativity

So true. It's about creativity and the story. Steven Soderbergh though could make a film with a paper bag and it will still look good.

Very true. Another thing that's true though is that the filmmaking community has... well, a lot of ego behind it. It's like if you talk to a PC-exclusive gamer about playing on console; the latter gets dismissed because of the sunk-cost fallacy of the former. Sure, there are benefits if you really go look for them, but at the end of the day, the experience is on par. To bring it back to films, sure, undoubtedly more expensive cameras and rigs give more capabilities, but at the end of the day, the same experience can be given to the audience with just an iPhone. Unfortunately, the trick is being able to take that on set without getting dismissed.

What an inspiration Soderbergh!! ❤ As an aspiring filmmaker and also Mobile Filmmaker in the process this is awesome, it's not about the camera, but about the talent behind the camera.

I hope this is the future of filming for alot of people who have something like that to use. I loved this movie and find the fact that it was done on a iPhone charming. I can relate to this movie, cuz I've been contained in a mental facility 5 times. So this movie was a trip. Enjoyed the rollercoaster ride it gave me.

I think this was a brilliant choice and it showed us that the tools are not as important as the creator.
I mean, DISNEY used state of the art equipment and still cranked out The Last Jedi.

I suppose there "might" be a (solutional) gap between the RED MONSTRO (or whatever similar and big) and the iPhone. Steven, just admit that you are addicted to iPhones - not that it's the cool creative solution.
Well, I respect Steven for showing what a great results you can achieve with a sort of minimal amount of equipment. (But come on, there are better quality solutions - check also Stuckamann's review - he points towards about the same direction)

...There's no sign of 'creativity' in the way he uses this smartphone (with some extra lenses...) in this movie (movie that I am not judging in itself: I humbly like very much Mr. Soderbergh, for the record, no resentment at all). He simply uses it like he had a dslr, or an old camcorder, or any other kind of camera, even pricey. There's a misunderstanding. That's what happens when a brilliant American director sees himself like an European director (I don't want to use the term 'hipster'...), or at least like Mr. Orson Welles. I am European and this sounds obvious, to our sensibility. It's like reaching the Opera House on your bike instead of driving your limo (plus chauffeur). "So what"? Do a movie like it spending only 1000 $, and then we'll see (by the way, neither in this case we had a movie 'experiment', only an 'industrial' one, like a new delivery post service 'on foot', to say...). He is not a Gondry, for an example, or a Belà Tarr, or a Von Trier, or a Klimov. There's a huge misunderstanding (fortunately of a light kind: peace to everybody).

variamusica I'm going to kindly say this, but shut up. It was a good film and I find the fact that he filmed this on an iPhone charming. I've been to a mental facility, so he hit that on the nail on how it feels like to be contained in one. They treat u like ur crazy, when you're not.
