I just got a mitutoyo comparitor and it doesn't get much better with more light... I even have the accessory lens for surface mode... 😢
    Yours looks awesome!

Hmmm, in theory they all work in a very similar fashion so light from above should give you a good surface mode picture. Some things to note though: Make sure the lights are above the lens (ie the only light the lens can see is being reflected off the part, otherwise you'd get washed out glare), and you need waaaaaay more light than you'd think. I don't talk about it in the vid but that's two 10 watt leds that have spot lenses on them, so it's 20W of LED light focused into a spot 50mm wide... it's painful to look at, even briefly.
When you say 'it doesn't get much better', could you elaborate on what you're seeing/what it's like?

@@makebreakrepair I got a crazy bright led light off Amazon and shone it down on the parts as much as I could, it just didn't make that big of a difference. The existing light was pretty bright so maybe it was already as good as it was going to get.
I've changed course since and am now replacing all the mirrors and optics with a binocular magnifier. Keeping the xyz stage though. I hated to tear the machine up but I am just looking for a much more clear image.
I'll be making a video about the build sometime soon if you're not interested.
      Thanks for the reply!

I'm very curious about your build, and sad to hear the mititoyo comparator is getting modified (don't suppose you live in australia and/or want to ship it to me? :P ). If you're just looking for a stereo inspection microscope I can recommend these (no affiliation, not sponsored, and you can find the same unit on aliexpress etc, this is the one I purchased and was very please with www.vevor.com.au/multi-directional-microscope-c_11135/eco-micro-inlaid-mirror-ball-vise-engraver-micro-setting-microscope-jewelry-tool-p_010191167000) instead of modifying the comparator - they're not great as an inspection microscope (ie the surface mode lighting is fun and good for measuring surface features, not for inspection).
Send me a link to your build when it's done or if you have any questions etc, just email me at makebreak.public@gmail.com
