    One of the least expensive ways to make over furniture is with paint and stencils. In this tutorial, learn how to stencil on furniture. I took this $30 thrifted table, split it in half, stenciled the top with a pretty damask stencil, and made a long folding table for my latest laundry room makeover!

      Serena Appiah HI Serena, why did you use a brush at the beginning on the stencil but later on you used a roller ? Which do you use out of those 2 ?, or do you need to use both ? Also, what do you use to clean the stencils with ? Just water or anything else ?

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  9 лет назад +1

      Hey there justmadeit2 ! I switched because it was such a large table that the stencil brush would have taken too long. You can use both, but the roller helped me get it done sooner! :) The stencil can be wiped when wet, but it if dries, I've been told that soaking it overnight in Simple Green will get the gunk off. Good luck!

    Do you have to put a clear coating of something over that stencil work to protect the paint from coming off, or do you just paint it and leave it and it will be fine? I really like your channel by the way. :-)

    Love this idea!! I have a square paisley print, but it doesn't have those little key pieces the you realign the piece to to continue the pattern..argh! So did you ever use the spray adhesive to keep the stencil completely flat?? and after you rolled paint instead of using the pouncing brush, did paint ever get underneath the stencil when you had to move it?

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  7 лет назад

      Hey, Lisa! I generally don't use spray adhesive, but you can! Look for ones like this (amzn.to/2jJEejH) that say Stencil Adhesive. Rolling works well because it's faster, but you have to make sure you don't overload the roller. Sometimes paint may seep underneath, but you just touch it up with a small paint brush! :) Hope that helps!

  • @kuyaglenn17
    @kuyaglenn17 7 лет назад +1

    How do you avoid bleeding from stenciling? I'm on my second attempt and using a stencil with fine detailing and it just doesn't look good cause the paint bleeds through. I've tried dabbing with sponge with minimal paint as well.

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  7 лет назад

      Hey, Glenn! Yeah, it's tricky. Don't think it will be precise and exact. The more detailed of a stencil you use, the less noticeable the bleeding is. You can also try to use an adhesive spray, although I've never tried it. On this stencil job, I went back afterward and just touched it up in places that weren't as sharp as I liked!

    Question: I have a table that i recently finished with chaulk paint. I have not applied a sealer, gloss, or wax. If i apply a stencil, what type of paint do I use? Do I use chaulk paint? It seems like it takes several coats so I'm confused. Thanks!

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  8 лет назад

      Hey, Heather! Sorry for the long delay in responding! Yes, you can use chalk paint. It does take a couple of coats for a great finish, but because it dries so fast, I would recommend doing one section with a coat....wait for it to dry a few minutes, and go over it again for a second coat, THEN lift it and move it to the next area. Make sense? Good luck!

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  7 лет назад

      Hey there! I didn't put anything on top, but I SHOULD have. I would have used clear wax at that time, but since making that video, I have started using a topcoat that I really love by General Finishes High Performance Top Coat. It works really well and has just enough shine! You can find my affiliate link here: amzn.to/2sS7JUt . I also have started to use a finishing wax called Fiddes & Sons that a friend recommended and it has a lot of amazing shine to it. You can see me use it here in this video: ruclips.net/video/oLzDDElIS4k/видео.html

      I'll have to check it out! I wonder if you're talking about ombre, like different shades of the same color on the dresser drawers? (BTW, I just bought Lilly's book, but haven't read it yet. It looks really good, lots of sound advice on being successful!). Here's a project I did with ombre drawers: thriftdiving.com/pink-mod-ombre-dresser/

      No, not a fan really, but I have watched some of her videos and she's funny as hell! I just happened to be at the bookstore and saw her book and was like, "Hey, I've seen her videos." Her book is very common sense and down to earth success advice, and I am interested in how she's been able to become so successful. She talks about hiring the right people, setting yourself up for success, and rewarding yourself after your "To Do" list is done. I love her advice! I have to get started on reading the book. Maybe tonight, since we're talking about it!

    Can you use latex paint to stencil onto a latex painted surface?

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  7 лет назад

      Hey there, Sue. You can.....but if you do, I would recommend a flat paint. The satin and semi-gloss paints tend to be a bit "gummy" and will peel off if there's any moisture or humidity. You're best bet, though, would be to stick to a chalked-based paint or another paint designed for furniture. It's a bit heartier and will stick better to furniture. Some other brands would be Americana Paint that you can buy at The Home Depot, or this brand: bit.ly/pretty-stencil.

      Hey there! Yes, you can find stencils at craft stores like Michael's or Hobby Lobby. The thing is that they're pretty limited in their stencils. The ones they have are nice, but the patterns aren't as nice as the more premium stencils. However, yes, you can get stencils there, too! :)

      Carolyn Tillinghast NOT ridiculous when you use it on many projects as I have done! :) If you buy cheapie ones they may fall apart. But the good quality ones last over and over again. No one said every aspect of DIY is dirt cheap! Lol. Sort of like making your own clothes: fabric, thread, sewing machine. It can all add up. Thanks for commenting!
