    They're the coolest thing ever for doing flat tires on the side of the road!

      Dunno Brian, used the standard van set last week, and even with having to RTFM to find the stuff ( later read why the one spare wheel nut just kept spinning, made it easy to put back) and using the dinky jack it only took 15 minutes to change that flat.
      Did it in under 10 minutes years ago, in pouring rain, as I knew where all the VW tools were, and just tossed every thing I absolutely did not need ( including the flat tyre) on the road onto the back seat and hauled out of there, with heater on max and trying to drip dry before getting home. Put it all back later after the insurance claim for the pothole.

      I been telling my friend (as we try to fix his trans 84 corolla) that rebuilding a transmission is harder than the engine because you can't really go ask anyone how to anything with it because not many people have done a transmission like they have done an engine.

    These synchro videos have been great Brian! This is the content I like to wake up to a coffee with, thank you. Your knowledge, attitude and character really help me in ways that my vocabulary isn't articulate enough to express. You radiate with positive energy and I hope to one day have 1/10th of the knowledge you possess. Thanks man
    Hey Spanky!! I'm glad you got your car fixed! It's pretty cool seeing briansmobile1 feat. D6Spanky. I may or may not have developed the same innocent crush for you that the 6 year old Brad had for Kimberly from the Power Rangers in the 90's, lol. Now a theft proof vehicle, as I guess a manual trans is a rarity ( not even available as option on Corvettes I hear) in the USA these days. See you got the right oil as well, just using SAE80 will make them balky, you need that SAE75 in there.
    Hope you also changed the clutch release bearing while in there, always cheap to do while you have it out, and pretty much will always help as well.

    Interesting video, nice!
    I could be wrong, but isn't it bad that she keeps her foot on the clutch and her hand on the gear lever?
    Or did she have to shift soon in the clips?

    • @ruudxd1
      @ruudxd1 7 лет назад

      That is why I commented it indeed.
      But I would have figured Brian would have told her, that is why I wasn't sure.

    • @briansmobile1
      @briansmobile1  7 лет назад +2

      Resting your foot on the clutch pedal down the highway is bad. It wears everything out in your clutch kit, but especially your throw out bearing. Hovering or covering isn't bad. It's a matter of pressure. Anyone that gets 100k on a clutch set is doing decently well. I've had customers blow one to crap in a week. Had to go out driving with them and watch how they drove on the second clutch- it was them.

  • @zoidberg444
    @zoidberg444 7 лет назад

    I've heard that some people have had luck getting more life out of bad syncros in Toyota gearboxes by changing fluids. That some of them are very finicky on what works with them. Some like single grade dino oil. Some need synthetic or multigrade.
    Nice video though. Not a job i'm looked forward to ever having to do. That's for sure.

    Hello Brian: Would appreciate if you could help me understand what's wrong with my 2002 corolla manual transmission. My clutch was changed recently, there is no issue with shifting or down shifting. My engine runs good as well. I hear an intermittent noise (every 5 to 10 seconds), something like a part coming loose that I only hear when the car is moving on gear engaged (all gears). The noise goes away when I shift to neutral while the car is moving. Any clues as to what the problem could be?

    There aren't any syncros on my freightliner Eaton fuller 10speed transmission. My options are to double clutch or rev match

    • @joshzotz7445
      @joshzotz7445 7 лет назад

      Joe Johnson well, if I don't rev match, it grinds. It has done that since it was brand new. All of the manual trucks in the fleet do it too. I'm not sure what dogs really are, but in my case, there isn't any 'grind protection', for lack of a better description.

    • @joshzotz7445
      @joshzotz7445 7 лет назад

      Joe Johnson It is possible that I'm not explaining it correctly. I'm not a mechanic. Like I said before my fleet has about 3,000 manual trans trucks and they all do it. In the beginning of my trucking career, we had to take a class just on how to shift and how to rev match or double clutch. Plus, you definitely have to rev match for downshifting for jaking down a hill.

    • @roadkill5333
      @roadkill5333 7 лет назад

      Josh Zotz The transmissions in big trucks, are not fully synchronized transmissions, like in car and light trucks! When you shift one, you have to ensure that the input shaft speed and the output shaft speed, (the engine and the road speeds) are the same!! You can use a technique called "DOUBLE CLUTCHING" or you can use a technique called "SLIPPING THE GEARS"!
      Either way, you can not shift from one gear to another, without speed matching the different gears!! Even with the clutch depressed, with the input (engine) speed, and the output (road) at different speeds, the gears will not mesh together!! And no matter what you do, the totally improper gear cannot be obtained, at all, ever, never, won't do it! You have to be able to match the engine R.P.M.s and the road speed, to get one into a gear!

    • @joshzotz7445
      @joshzotz7445 7 лет назад

      roadkill5333 That's right. Good explanation. I couldn't explain it at all. Joe Johnson is right about the trans not having syncros, however, I don't think anything is wrong with my truck. I believe this is truly how they are designed and rev matching or double clutching is your only way to engage gear. I'm not exactly sure what the cringy grinding sound is when I miss the rev for a gear.

    • @briansmobile1
      @briansmobile1  7 лет назад

      Maybe I'm thinking of the Ford model A then? I drove an antique car that was a lot more work to shift and it really took some timing to get it right. I mess up names. It happens.

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 7 лет назад

      I think so. Model A had a non-synchro sliding-gear box. Model T has a planetary gearset.

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 7 лет назад

      PS: And I HATED trying to shift a Model A. Even when you're double clutching and rev-matching and taking your time...it's still virtually impossible to avoid crunching a little. :-P

    • @briansmobile1
      @briansmobile1  7 лет назад +1

      The gears in their relationship to the shaft is intuitive. There's marks where bearing are- they go biggest to smallest on the driven gear. And you just match up the splined to splined and put clips into groves. Everything has a home like a "tab a into slot b."
