  • 1 MOA challenge in collaboration with ‪@BlokeontheRange‬
    The basic rules are:
    - 10 shots on target for score (at least 50 yards or further)
    - no mulligans, no do-overs, no fliers...
    - max rifle weight: 4.76 kg (10.5 lb)
    - lead sleds are not allowed
    Check out Bloke's original video where you can find complete rules in detail:
    • Enter The 1 MOA All Da...
    The idea of this challenge is to show keyboard kommandos that 1 MOA is not that common and not that easy to make. First point is that 3 rounds are absolutely not statistically relevant and resemble more luck than anything else. 5 shots are better but not really indicative of the accuracy of a particular rifle or ammunition. I have gotten really good 5 shot groupings with rifle that i arent consistent. Sometimes you can get lucky.
    But 10 rounds grouping level the playing field - you can't cheat it, you can't get lucky with all 10 shots and if the rifle/ammo isn'0t capable of 1 MOA, you won't be able to do it.
    Yes, a lot of people don't have the skill to do it but you would be surprised to learn that also a lot of most common rifles on the market today can't do it. A lot of them require at least handloaded ammo and a bunch of modifications.

    When I worked in gun stores, I was *sorely* tempted to make 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 inch circles out of paper or cardboard just to carry around and slap on the counter when someone wanted to go on and on about MOA. "If (insert rifle model here) can't hold at least 1 MOA it's JUNK!" Slap 2" circle on the table and ask if they'd be unhappy with 10 rounds in that at 100yds and watch them shut up. Or sputter and sperg uncontrollably. Either way improves my day.

      What prompted me to do this video were the comments under my CZ600 Trail review video. That rifle just isnt capable of shooting sub MOA with 10 rounds but it's sub 2 MOA
      I think this is still very good but people thought it was shit. So many gun owners think their rifles can do much better without even full understanding what MOA means.
      The other thing i also suspect is that many people dont understand that accuracy is a cone that relatively equally spreads out relative to distance from the shooter

      Looks nice but most cars cant make it, even if you have 100 km of straight road and the best driver behind the wheel. This are most common rifles on the market.
      Then you have some better ones, so lets say some cars that can actually do 250km/h but only with proper tyres and with a good driver, that wont crash before it reaches that speed.
      And then you have high ends sports cars that will do it without a problem, some even with sub-optimal tyres and with a amateur driver, but those "cars" or rifles are not that common and usually specifically built for certain purpose, like PRS, F-class, ELR,...

    Important to remember, 10 shot groups are not the pinnacle of consistency either.
    Hornady made tests, 100 shots worth of 3 shot groups, 100 shots of 5 shot, and so on to 100 shot group.
    3 shot group sizes can be +/- 60-70% from mean. If mean is 0.5 MOA, groups can be from 0.15 MOA to 0.85 MOA.
    5 shot +/- 40-50%
    10 shot +/- 30-40%
    20 shot +/- 20-25%
    30 shot +/- 15-20%
    50 shot +/- 10%

      Statistically you'd want to shoot out a selelction of barrels. Youd look at the steel for a given population. Youd look at the processes. It would be a lot. Where it would be relevant to have a barrel spun up is to have a barrel timed and indicated for "straightness". That way you focus on vertical stringing rather than horizontal or worse. Manage as much unknown as possible.

    Thank you Ziga! I think this is quite an important conversation to have for a more realistic perception of rifle/shooter capabilities. BUT I have a small tweak for this challenge that i want to propose: dont measure the overall group size, but make a 1 MOA target and all 10 shots have to land inside (edge hits count) the target.
    The point of small groups is to hit a small target and I get the impression people believe their "sub-MOA all day long" rifle will hit a sub-MOA target all day long. Essentially people will also be confronted with how well they zeroed their rifle and if they did it for a mean average group (with 10/20 or 30 shots) or for the smallest group that they shot.
    In my experience there is always an excuse. "oh that's a flyer, lets not count it" "pulled the shot" "zeroed for different ammo"
    In range practice this is one thing, but when it comes to hunting I really wish that people make sure they can hit a desired target, not focus on how close they got their 3 shots.
    Regardless, thank you for putting this out there and inspiring us to gather more real data for ourselves

      Think of minute of angle as a cone of where a bullet will hit at a givem distance. If your rifle is one minute of angle it will hit within an inch at 100yards going out to say 500 yards it should hit within that same cone but now within 5inches

    • @PolenarTactical
      @PolenarTactical  4 месяца назад +15

      I like the fact that you asked because there's a lot of people don't quite understand it but use it anyways to brag about accuracy.
      In short, MOA means minute of angle. So we have degrees - a circle has 360 degrees and every degree has 60 minutes of angle (MOA) = a complete circle has 21.600 MOA
      So MOA is not a measurement of length but a measurement of angle.
      Why we like to use it is because 1 MOA at 100 yards is approximately 1", 2 MOA at 100 yards is approximately 2" and so on.
      And since this is a measurement of angle, 1 MOA is 1 MOA, regardless of distance.
      It just means that 1 MOA grouping at 50 yards will be 1/2 of an inch (because you half the distance), it will be 1" at 100 yards, 2" at 200 yards, 3" at 300 yards and so on.
      So if a rifle can shoot at certain accuracy, let'0s say 2 MOA, you can immediately know what kind of accuracy to expect of it from any distance.
      Any yes, we are also making a video about this trying to explain it in simple terms

    • @PolenarTactical
      @PolenarTactical  4 месяца назад +1

      My WWSD pencil barrel was around 1.5 MOA until i shortened it to 12"
      Now the best grouping was at 1.3 MOA with 10 rounds.
      What i also noticed with mine is that it groups better when it's hot. I always got better groupings after 20-30 rounds with a hot barrel. I think this is because when the barrel is cold and starts to heat up that is the time where the majority of stringing and termal shift happens.
      Once the barrel is hot enough, it stays consistent.
      I have no idea if this is something all thin barrels do or not. This is also technically against the rules of this challenge, but what i would do in your place is set up a target with 3 aiminng points and then start with 20 rounds of cheaper ammo, shoot it relatively fast and do groups. Then without letting the barrel cool, you load 10 precision rounds and take your time to shoot the last grouping.
      The other way would be to wait very long between shots so barrel can cool down.
      Either way we would love to se your submissions with both rifles 🙂

    Is pillar bedding bolt actions and glass bedding the recoil lug a thing in Europe? It's common accurizing for hunting rifles in the US. Very cheap, and effective.
    I imagine there are tons of US entries with DD or Geissele entries. Berger otms, mk262 clones, eld-m is not hard to buy off the shelf. Trick is find a suppressor that helps tighten up groups on the shorter setups.

    10 rounds, many people will pull the last couple off, like you did.

    • @PolenarTactical
      @PolenarTactical  4 месяца назад +3

      The thing is that i didn't. Those weren't fliers, my shots were perfect.
      I suspect it's because of thermal change in the barrel - i didn't wait long enough between shots and it got quite hot.
      When i do accuracy testing i also shoot a lot from a very solid lead sled and the "fliers" are just part of the overall accuracy of rifle/ammo. Could be variation in velocity or some other factor but i have seen rifles group nicely from 4-6 rounds and then widen the group. It could just be normal statistical distribution but it just shows itself like that because humans are wired to see patterns in things.
      Long story short, 5 round groupings can still be a bit deceiving because if you shoot a couple of them, there will be quite a lot of variation. For example i was able to produce two 5 shot groupings with my CZ600 Trail that were under 1 MOA but was never able to make it even close with 10 rounds.
      But yes, 10 rounds also bring out the skill of the shooter - for this challenge i was most afraid that i will mess up, not the rifle

    • @BlokeontheRange
      @BlokeontheRange 4 месяца назад

      @drtech-pw2cu that's your primeval monkey brain which is preprogrammed to see patterns where none exist - if you see a 5 shot group with 3 together then 2 off in different directions you're preprogrammed to say "look! those 3 are the group and the others are fliers!" And it takes some deeper understanding of the statistics involved to learn that this is not necessarily the case (have a look at "statistical clustering", that's in a similar vein): our brains are not adapted to see randomness. It's an adaptation from millions of years ago, where seeing a false positive in in a pattern isn't likely to do much other than give you a bit of anxiety, whereas a false negative in a pattern will get you eaten by a sabre toothed tiger or stung to death by killer hornets. Those last 2 shots were simply part of the overall group, but your monkey brain really, really wants to see them as out of it.

    shooting 10 shot groups without wind flags? Even at 100 yards it matters, 0.25-0.5" moa is quite possible wind deflection between two extremes.

    • @PolenarTactical
      @PolenarTactical  4 месяца назад +2

      When i first read your comment my first reaction was "bullshit", probably because i learned in the military to just ignore wind at 100 meters.
      Lol, i get the irony 😆
      I checked in Hornady and you are absolutely correct, .223 and .308 will have enough drift even with 5mph wind at 90 degrees to make a difference, especially with 10 round grouping.
      But what worked for me is that there was no wind at that range, especially no gusts and the conditions didnt really change between shots.
      I honestly think my .308 started to spread out because of heating up the barrel. I noticed similar results when i did some testing in summer and shot multiple 5 shot groupings back to back

    getting 1" groups at 300 with my Taurus G2C

    I'd like to try this with my 16" but i think the stainless heavy barrel and A2 stock puts it over the weight limit. Its possible i could strip a pound or more off though, have a hollow A1 stock for it. We will see.

      Dont worry about the weight limit, we're accepting all submissions. Have fun, try it out.
      Most of rifles that were able to do it were over the weight limit
      We're gathering more info and we will probably make a revised challenge next year

    Get a Sako. No need for any of the extras you added and you will get under 1 MOA all day at 100m.

      Eventually i will change it out but i really dont have a reason to do it right now - also the desert paint job matches the chassis :D

      I agree
      We made a video of shortening the WWSD pencil barrel and it improved the accuracy

      @@PolenarTactical ok. I just don't understand why you'd go to all that effort just to slap a piece of broken equipment on top. But the trolling bit, I meant ....most of you can't shoot sub moa. Proceeds to shoot sub moa with a broken scope. Which is exactly what you did.

      @badprogramming2486 when i put this rifle together i didnt have enough money for a proper scope. I got this one for free and initially wanted to use it for a video (shooting through a scope myth)
      But after i managed to glue it together i noticed that it holds zero, so i paninted it and put it on this rifle as a placeholder... well, i did a lot of shooting with it, even a precision rifle course in CZ and got hits at 1 kilometer in Slovenia.
      Idk, it just happened.
      Now i have 3 scopes that are much better quality than this one but i never bother to change it.
      It just always worked 😅

    Good points on shooting 10 shot groups. A good rifle will shoot sub moa for 10 shots. Most of my rifles will do it, and have proven it. Shoot 2 10 shot groups side by side on a single piece of paper, average those 2 groups, and see how you do. Even some of my "hunting" rifles will shoot that well. 3 shot groups don't tell you shit, and 5 shots are about the same. Shoot 10 to "confirm" your rifle and load, and get back to me.. As for your AR's. All of mine shoot sub moa 10 shot groups.. I also have an AR10 6.5 that shoots .8 moa for 10 shots. Not a real hard feat, yet everyone swears they have rifles that do it "all day long". Ask them to prove it, and you hear crickets chirping..
