Thanks for this man. I just got done and it was a pain at first. Loosed the engine and it was pretty smotth from there. I had to take the bolts out of the rear drive or whatever to get the belt on and off. Thanks again!
Thanks so much front part of the belt was easy .Then I could not get the rear loose . Watched your video and loosened motor bolts raised motor up 1/2 inch belt came right out . THANKS
You really didn't have to untighten the motor. If you drop the belt on one side under the motor shift to gears so you could take off the other side and the belt completely comes off. I just did it today. The only time I used my ratchet set was to take the cover off and the pulley.
Thank you! I could not change the belt without loosening the engine! I'm a carpenter not a mechanic by any means. I hate Engineers. Seriously...couldn't have left another 1/4" gap.
With that engine, you can take the gas tank out of the holder so the cap doesn't leak, and lay the mower on the left side...won't hurt a thing. Then you put the trans in 5th gear, with the rubber disc all the way to the side of the engine pulley/drive disc, so you can get the belt between it and the rubber wheel without having to loosen the engine bolts. And you can just loosen the deck idler pulley, you don't have to remove it. I could replace that belt in 8 minutes, not counting the plastic deck cover. (30 years in the power equipment business)
I have a 1973 Comet and dont need to move the engine to change the belt. Put a clamp on the clutch, this raises the rubber disc and related assy then you can squeeze everthing out. YMMV
@@RayStein I use one of those clamps that allows you to repeatedly pull a trigger grip and it slides the clamp a foot or so along its length. You can let the clamp do the work as opposed to you.
You can adjust the belt tension if it is too loose. Under the seat there is a clamp around the main frame tube. Loosen the clamp and slide the tube in the rear section as needed, and tighten. You may need to adjust the pedals a bit, just move the grommets on the pedals.
Thanks! I'll check it out. I love those old Snapper riding mowers. They're built like tanks compared to the new Cub Cadets and John Deer low priced models.
@@RayStein Changing a belt on mine as we speak but the 71 1/4 belt was far to short. Went with a 74 1/4 belt and it's a perfect fit. Mines a 33 inch. Waiting on a few other parts before I roll it out. I love these old mowers too. I got mine for free at a curb in the early 90s. Cleaned and rebooted the rear axle once and went thru a few used engines but that's cheap compared to what they sell today. A plastic camshaft and trans axle? WTH?

@@RayStein Thanks for responding. Mine is also a V but how can the flat side of yur belt ride on a V pulley? I was given this rider and don’t know what was done to it but my belt does sit flat on the V pulley.
@@pushrd1 The v goes inside and touches the metal inside the metal pulley on mine and it works great and never slips. If the belt was flipped the wrong way it might explain what they did wrong meaning they have the flat part touching the pulley.

I have a 1990 model snapper rear engine 10 hp with a 30 inch deck possibly does anyone know a belt that would fit it that is specific to the Snapper SR 120 please because I just ordered a belt for it with the same exact part number and it’s too short. Please help it came from snapper themselves It was $54.00. Please help.
I would take the old belt to The Tractor Supply store and measure it. If it does not have a belt get as close as you can to the right size. They let you try various belt sizes to see if it fits and return ones that don't fit.
Loosening the motor mount bolts was the hack I needed to get new belt on that was absent in the first two videos I watched. Thanks!
Thanks - some people argued with me but I said why do it the hard way? It's only 4 bolts and makes the job much easier.

It's interesting because I tried everything else they said works online but the engine bolts were the only way I could get it back on easily.
Your way is best and easiest way I've seen. Thank you
Thanks!
Thank you so much! All I needed was the belt size but I can tell loosening up the motor will help in the future 🤙
Yeah it made it much easier for me. There may be another way to do it but it's quite simple that way.

I was thinking the same thing. The experts put the tractor on a lift so I found another method that works. Thanks!

I love those old snapper mowers. It's true the gas can comes right out. They don't make them like that anymore.

Good tip. I tried that first but just didn't have the strength so I went with the slower approach.

Negative engage clutch/ break...hold with rope ...putt in 5 gear belt is easily removed and replaced
Thanks for the great idea. I used to do it that way too when I was younger.

Is that a v groove pulley? Or flat? On the tensioner.
Mine is a v groove. Just double check in case yours is different.

Did you check if someone stretched the tube to take out slack? That would make your belt too short also.
You didn’t address how loose or titeen belt to be.
It needs a little play. Too tight is bad and flabby is awful.
