- Snapper Rider~ STUCK Transmission How To Get It Working Properly - Lubrication & Service
This machine had a very stuck transmission and needed other work too
Caught in time we can save it and you can too!
lubrication of axels
cleaning and inspecting drive disc - Хобби
Finally the clutch was pressed so it could shift from side to side.
The friction wheel was preventing it from shifting. If yours can shift while engine is not running then you may need to lower the friction plate/pully.
I never got the notification for this video! I just checked my feed and sure enough, RUclips skipped right over it to the next one! Sheesh - I’m paying big bucks for this service! 😂
Thank you for the video.. just acquired a 1993 model with a probably not original 12.5 hp L head briggs. Did the basics already, carburetor clean ans reassemble, fuel system clean fluid change and plug to the small engine, she needed a coil, fires up and runs great.
Next, clutch cable, new friction disc and grease and maintenance.
Already added flat frees to the front and a new ignition switch.
So we’re on the way… thank you again!
Sounds great!! Once you get over a certain point you will have a really nice machine!!
Keep it up and thanks for watching!
Luv the stories!
Thank you for the education Arch! Being now retired, and looking for "projects" to do, and record for my little RUclips channel, I'm pulling out my old Snapper to go through it. It has been under the house for pushing 30 years now. I think it must be an 80-something model, not sure. 8hp, HiVac with rear mounted grass catcher. My (now ex) wife traded my 67 C10 stepside pickup to her sister who lives in Kentucky for it back in the late 80's, and we used it for a few years. New house we moved to had much bigger house, much less yard, so a rider wasn't as useful any more. However, it should be a fun project, and spending time working on it will keep me from hanging out in bars and chasing loose wimmens now.
LOL,,, hahahah,, great story! I feel ya!!
Good luck on ya projects and the new channel!! Gonna go check it out!
Thanks!
Thanks for this video. This is exactly whats happened to my Snapper. It had damaged boots when I bought it. I accidently snapped the shift lever today trying too hard to push it into gear. Looks like I will need to follow all the steps in your video and fit some new boots
Ohh Noooo
This one sold but I have to replace the boots on my older machine too!
I was hoping to do the video on that this past season but I ran out of time!
I did lube and free up everything and make it run well though!
Good luck on your project! Take ya time
Learned a great deal thanks so much for sharing your expertise!
Thanks Philip,,,glad to help
That reminds me, I have new boots for my Snapper that have been hanging in the shop for 2 years!! I get under mine every few weeks with the WD40 and free it up, lol! It stays outside which is bad but hey, it keeps chugging along and is 23 years old! I LOVE my Snapper RER!
Why don't they put a cover on this?
My Jacobsen had one!
Keep it going! You know that dirt is putting wear on it!
Mine, (the one I showed) needs boots and like you they have been on the shelf for 2 years as well!
I hope to get this sorted this coming season
I subbed. I just bought me three old Snappers and I LOVE them!
Awesome,, Parts are being discontinued so have a few is a great idea!
A good video. Two thumbs up!
Thanks Big!!
Nice video.. very informative.
I just bought one today in marketplace for cheap cheap. Gonna go thru everything and clean/lube everything well. Thanks 😊
Congratts!! Its a nice machine!
Nice rundown of maintenance for these things
It's in the Operators manual, the Mower frame serial plate is on the mower frames, different places per the model, that model number will aid in getting the Operators Manual & parts manual, DON'T treat ALL Snapper Rear Engine Riders the same, they look similar from year to year but there ARE differences, parts should NOT be interchanged from Model to model UNLESS the part numbers are the same
Great job arch cheers bud
Thanks Bud,,,,,,,!!!!!
Hospital clean that is a great idea to do that for machine service got to keep the great snapper rear engine mower in great shape
Hello from Kingsport, Tennessee!
Welcome Big! Tennessee IN DA HOUSE!!
I just used my hand with a bunch of grease in it and used the other hand to switch gear selector. That way you get much more grease just like a cv joint. on a car
Where can I get a new front tire for this unit ? Any suggestions thanks & great video
Amazon! Grab the info off the old tire or bring the tires/rims over to a repair shop and they can put them on as well! Kinda a pain to install!
Let me know when the other one has posted
Thanks for all your videos. Is there any chance that you could make a video right from the beginning where you show how you stand the machine up on its rear. I’m a little worried about doing that? Thanks again. Tom I.
I think that's a terrific Idea!!
I have one left; the older one that is currently mine.
It needs axel boots, I have them but its a real pain job that I dread!
I am promising myself that I will do this at some point this season..
Its out of cold storage and sitting upright in my garage now..
I will make a point of making a video as you describe soon!
Yes there are a few pointers that we need to do to make it safe for storage or even just to work on it!
Thanks!
Been putting off boot replacement on my Series 15 (14hp Kohler) because the OE appears to have 2 different boots and now, only the 7075115yp appears to be available (old #'s 17083/17084 a long and short boot). Should I try to find Old Stock?
Yea, there is now more discontinued parts for sure..Try whatever works...What if you got 2 long ones?
Maybe modify a long one...
I need to do mine too. I was hoping to get to it this season!
Good luck,, let us know what ya did!
I have 9 of them that I fixed up for me to use, only need one but I’m stupid and looking for more to fix up
Retired diesel mechanic and can’t quite tell I can’t move period
are trans parts for my snapper readily available? Thanks for a great video.
Good question!
General answer is it depends on the year! Newer ones yes some parts are but the older models have some parts that aren't available new or aftermarket however some good used parts are around.
There's always parts machines!!!
Nice job Arch we have as our personal self propelled mower a commercial Snapper similar drive system but exposed from the top. We have never had to service one of these but what do you think of making a sheet metal bottom cover for this rider? Basically would not take a lot of time to fabricate and install.
Wayne yes I was thinking the same thing
Thanx Wayne
Great Idea and you have my wheels turning!
Hopefully I will have time this season to put the boots on my machine and if so, I will look into making a nice cover!!
Great minds think alike! From the moment I realized there was no belly pan like a snowblower I kept thinking throughout the entire video how to fabricate the belly pan that should have been on it from the factory. Even though there’s all these boots and access plugs it’s still an entire area that should have been double protected by a good cover, especially since it’s not like a snowblower that operates in a clean environment.
I’m thinking an old curb find washer or dryer or an old tower computer would have larger sheet metal sections ready to cut up. Just don’t forget small drain holes at the lowest points with rubber grommets.
That’s my two cents! 😉👍🔧
@@Rein_Ciarfella Good idea on the materials that one could use to make the belly pan.
@@TheNovaJohn It has already been done, I worked @ the Snapper MFG plant before it was closed in McDonough Ga. the European models had additional parts including a cover for part of the bottom from fender to fender, if you would like the part numbers I can give such to you
With the wheel that has the rubber on it, for the drive.
Is the rubber belt bit,
Meant to spin independently from the wheel?
I have a snapper mower, and got barely any drive.
The rubber on the wheel is in ace condition.
But when it’s in gear, the rubber just moves, and doesn’t actually move the wheel,
To drive the rear wheels.
Yea,, mine is fine but its getting near its useful life.. Mine drives fine and could last a long time but yes, replace yours...
But keep in mind, I don't know or cant see your ,machine so it could be something else..
Personally I don't like these drive systems..
Good luck!
@@TheNovaJohn everything seams to operate fine on mine.. I just didnt know if that rubber was meant to rotate on its own..
Mine does... The rest of the drive wheel stays still, But the rubber spins.....
Nice video, and where did you get the work table from
Thanx Steve,,,,,,Here is a link to a playlist with this table and one I made...check it out!
Come to my homepage and check out my many other vids too...

10:58 Do NOT shoot lube down in there, that's where the brake lever & brake pad is, the mower WON'T stop when you soak up that area
I having issues with it moving forward from 1st through 5th and up hills. Reverse works well.
Time to get down there and service ,,,,,clean and lubricate!
@@TheNovaJohn that and looks like friction wheel is worn also
Yes, they will run like that for quite some time as long as everything else is working well!
In this example, the issues were elsewhere.
12:15 ALL that cable lube is UNNECESSARY, but IF you do so it can be done WITHOUT all that disassembly by shooting lube from the opposite end where the cable housing is attached close to the engine
6:57 You can beat all day long on that chain case but it WON'T move as long as the clutch / brake cable IS ENGAGED
HOW do I know if the boots are made of rubber instead of plastic Sir ??? Thanks
I've seen these come in a few colors, those are crap. The one I have now was like that..
Get the original type, Briggs makes them
I take it they are rubber Sir ?? Thanks @@TheNovaJohn
Yes,, its a silicone type rubber. Black
I will buy the briggs brand or should I say OEM. Thanks@@TheNovaJohn
16:49 This guy has SOAKED the powdered metal brake shoe that makes it INEFFECTIVE, DON'T put ANY lube in this area
They just need a cleaning every year or two
A light coat of grease and it’s like new again
That certainly helps. who does that? most peeps never bother with tune-ups and maintenance!
7:30 your friction wheel needs to be replaced. it shouldn't move like that.
Doesn't look like its not in Neutral?
It is,, one it got all freed up and lubed
I have taken my snapper in so many times to a shop & they do a yearly maintenance & literally never do this. I climbed under to see my boots are GONE!. Ugh
Sorry to hear,,,,
Time to do the boots my my older machine...Hoping to get to it this season..
At least you know now before damage is done!
Good luck!
Thanks for watching!
What is this “release the clutch” pls?
I'm not sure what you mean....I remember I was moving the clutch on and off and at one point it was on with the parking brake latch one that needed to be set off
@@TheNovaJohn ah so the clutch is the one that engages the blades?
No that's a separate clutch,, In this video we are dealing with the transmission.
@@TheNovaJohn how did you move the clutch to move the unit over? I thought the ‘gears’ were kind of always in mesh with the friction wheel - ie., that was the “clutch” (sorry to be a bit thick here - haven’t tipped it up yet)
I don't remember the shots in the video,,when the clutch is thrown, it lifts the rubber wheel up and off enough to allow the traversing of the rubber wheel over the metal disc.
The rest of the system is in mesh like ya said.
That was stuck initially!
at one point I had to stand up on the table to reach the control pedal.
This machine wasn't that bad but when they are really stuck things wont move properly and it can be confusing on the proper functions
20:34
Man use a shop rag ! The sound drives me crazy
Huh?
LOL , you folks who make YT clips on these Snappers appear to NEVER READ or own a Operators Manual or Service Manual
Not to be a smart ass, but you should have pushed the clutch FIRST.
no point in fixing those anymore. they're discontinued and they won't sell the rights to the model so no one else can built them again.
Everything we buy is discontinued a year after its sold!
There are parts available for these still, some used and some new.
These were very popular machines.. Tons out there!
@@TheNovaJohn doesn't matter if there's parts or not. they're all going to be BANNED soon. Democrats are winning local and state elections all over the country in record numbers and they're BANNING gas powered lawn equipment. The big box stores are complying with Democrat policy and removing gas powered lawn equipment from their stores and replacing their inventory with electric products. The smart thing to do is just stop buying gas powered mowers now because soon they'll all be illegal and worthless.
One of the BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS about these mowers is that ALL the Rear Engine Riders are the same, I worked at the factory 40+ years & I see so much BAD INCORRECT advice in these YT clips, FIRST BEFORE you begin working on these take the Model info off of the Serial Decal that is on the mower frame, that Model number will help to get a Owners & Operators manual & parts manual, get familiar with the parts & their names & adjustments
