Ultralight Fishing With SUFIX BRAIDS!

- I took out my kayak with a couple of ultralight rods and was after whatever bites. I had some 6lb Sufix 832 Braid spooled up on one reel, while I had 3lb Sufix Nanobraid on the other. Just like some of my other recent fishing line videos, I simply wanted to share some of my thoughts on these two line options for ultralight fishing specifically.

I can't believe I goofed up and broke my favorite ultralight rod again... The Dobyns Sierra has been so good to me, but I must have put a weak point in the blank at one point, because it snapped while I was trying to un-snag my jig from some heavy vegetation. More to come as I reach out to Dobyns about it, but at this point, I expect I will get it replaced for about half price a new one.

Feel bad about the rod, I know it's your second Dobyns rod to break unfortunately. I bought that rod because of your videos and it has become my favorite ultralight. Hope you get a new one soon!
Thanks Timmy! It is what it is. My gut tells me I bumped it or something. It’s held up so well all this time. Hopefully I can get a replacement sooner than later.
@@FishAnything It's a fantastic rod. Since I purchased that ultralight, I've now accumulated numerous rods from Dobyns. Love them all. I'll be excited when I see you back out there with your favorite rod.
Suffix 832 is my jam! Been rocking it for over 8 years. I have 3 rods that haven't been redone in 3 years and it's still going strong
It’s definitely a good line. For UL applications with tiny jigs, I just find some other lines give you more distance. Either way, it’s reliable so it’s a good option.
I'm stoked that you're making videos about braid, you gave me the idea to try it on my ultralight setup and so when I saw some bass pro brand braid 6lb line for $13 I had to try it, and it's fantastic!! Casts so much further than the 6lb mono I had before and the line itself is very smooth feeling. Not like other braids I've tried.
Happy to hear you found something you’re enjoying!!! Thanks Robert!
@@FishAnything definitely! Also picked up some mule jigs from your site and they're amazing for fishing our creeks for blue gill!
Nooo! Sad day. I to grabbed the Dobyns rod on your recommendation- the grip is next level.
You’ll love it! Just an oddball deal I trust Dobyns will make it right.
Best attitude in the game. Period.
I appreciate the kind words buddy
It's also possible that some small unnoticed impact in the past slightly compromised the blank and it finally failed. An accidental sharp tap on the gunnel can do it.
That’s what I’m thinking. Some kind of minor bump along the way that damaged it and it was just a matter of time. Not sure!
Shame about the rod just broke mine the other day haha, i think it would be cool to see you test out some budget uls and xuls such as the ali express mifine rods and such. great vid as always!!
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve got about 3 rods at home I need to test out. So many ideas so little time lol
@@FishAnything lol, you must be getting bombarded with suggestions haha
I love the 832 on my bass setups as well. I typically run straight copolymer on my ultralights because I bobber fish a decent amount and don't like braid with leader for that. I'm setting up a new ultralight though and wanted to do a braid setup this time
That’s a good point! I am sure I’d like sufix just fine for bass applications. For ultralight and my style of fishing, there are better options.
You should give the new x-braid finesse a shot it’s super soft and smooth and has been amazing for me so far. I landed a 22 pound catfish on 6lb braid to a 4lb leader and it held up like a champ. Thanks for the info Ethan tight lines !!!
That was a weird snap. Definitely a weak spot, but why is the question. One of my biggest fears with my Dobyn's and my new Olympic Bellezza SUL. I treat them like babies while transporting and I keep my drags set extra loose now. I just had the tip of my Daiwa Presso break the last week of July. Sent it to Daiwa and still have not heard back from them. They've had it since August 9. That was 40 days ago. Time for another phone call! I personally am about to try some 2.3 lb Varivas Red Eye Ajing "Ester" line on the Bellezza. Trying new things! That's what we do. (I still have a brand new spool of the pink Iron Feather. I was going to try that next on my Shimano Vanford reel, but since I got the Bellezza rod from Japan and paired that with the Vanford, the Varivas is going to be next). Always good to get your take on things. I have listened to your advice on many things ultra lite, and have never regretted following it. I love my 6' 2" Dobyn's Sierra 1 piece. It has been my favorite rod since I purchased it. (This Bellezza is now making a serious case for my #1 rod though.) Thanks for sharing.
Sounds like we can learn a lot from each other’s gear experiments! Hope that Daiwa gets replaced soon - I think they just don’t make the Presso very often. They are always going in and out of stock. You’ll probably get one after their next production run.
Sorry about you braking a rod but over all a pretty good day you was able to catch some fish and got to enjoy being outdoors
It was still a good use of my day :)
That is really unfortunate with your rod. I took out my favorite bass rod earlier this summer when I hooked it on the back cast with my walleye rod. So I can kind of feel your pain.
Ouch! It’s all a part of the sport I suppose! Win some lose some 🥲
Sorry about the Dobyns! I got a Daiwa Presso -> Daiwa Revros LT -> JBraid combo because of your videos and the travel friendly reviews and I love it. Been using it for saltwater inshore fishing and it has been a blast.
I’ve done the same thing, but haven’t ordered the J-braid yet. Unfortunately, I broke my Presso doing basically the same thing that just broke his Dobyns.
@@elijahthompson3899 sad news. Jbraid 8x is soooo smooth.
@@ph0b0x92 Very sad, I was falling in love with the Presso. Hopefully it’s covered under warranty, it is at Daiwa HQ right now! I do love the Revros LT, I have 2 in the 1000 size and they’re butter so far.
@@ph0b0x92 have you tried many other braids to have a good comparison to the JBraid? And what weight are you running? If you don’t mind me asking.
@@elijahthompson3899 i have tried kastkings, spider, and others I do not remember the brands… i have been using jbraid #6 on my presso setup.
I feel for you, I've had a bad luck streak last this last 8 months, broke a defy silver (favorite ul) couldn't find the same size to replace it for months, replaced it w a TFO trout and panfish 2, it exploded into 3 pcs in a similar incident to yours (pulling moss of jig gently) then snapped my majorcraft benkai ul bfs rod (amazing bfs) snugging up loose line w jig hooked thru an eyelet omw to fish. Majorcraft took care of me and my local dealer took care of the TFO. Never did cut up the defy silver to send in claim.
You should try the daiwa presso sensor 2 braid. I just got the 3.9 lb and it’s literally thinner than a strand of my hair! I can’t wait to try it out on some steelhead
That sounds neat! Sometimes the line that is ultra-thin actually leads to line twist and management challenges though so I’ll be curious to hear more. It’s a fine balance!
@@FishAnything I think owning a slow oscillating reel like the shimano stella fk will help aid in my understanding of this new challenge that I’m faced with! Maybe i should spool it up and post a review
Had 6lb Diawa J-braid on a BFS setup. Thought it bit into itself too much so I went up to 10lb and not the line is decidedly too heavy. Either 8lb is the juice or I'm out of luck with J-braid. I love 20lb 832 on my larger baitcasters. Might have to try the lighter stuff.
It seems like braid commonly bites into itself on BFS reels in my experience. Good callout!
I don't know, fishing ultralight feels a lot like hunting Bambi. I hate it when a tiny mad perch bites the lure of his own size. And I'm kind of scared about those fragile rods too. Just moving them around. The higher the price, the crazier the dimensions. I just can't.
Like the kayak style though 👍
To each his own! Ultralight fishing is great for variety and helpful to target large fish of smaller species types.
That really sucks about your Dobyns! Sorry about that, Ethan! Just out of curiosity, what was the other navy blue rod you were using, and how do you like it?
Yamaga Blanks Blue Current 3 it’s a great rod but I like the Dobyns more.
@@FishAnything I bought the Dobyns because of you!
🔥🔥🔥
👊🏽🤠👊🏽
Sorry about the rod but at least you didn’t get a Lamprey this time
Good memory! I’m impressed.
I ordered a bunch of stuff based on your recs. I have Dobyns just like that on the way. I kind of worried after seeing that break, but I’m hoping it’s a fluke
I wouldn’t let it bother you. I have caught so many dang fish on this thing. I think it’s either something I caused by bumping it or it was just an odd fluke. I’m going to email Dobyns and see if they’ll hook it up, otherwise I’ll just pay the $80ish and move forward.
I have a few ultralight setup but my go to is my 7ft6in bass pro micro lite glass any 2500 reel with lelands lure trout SOS 2lb test mono. It's my bluegill and crappie killer setup. I've broken so many carbon or graphite rod but never this fiber glass rod. Would be interested in you opinion on my setup. Please do a video!
I’ll have to scoop one up in the future! Thanks for sharing
Was that a 620SF that broke? I had one break in the exact same spot earlier this year when I wouldn't have expected it to. Still a Dobyns fan.
Interesting… yeah it’s the 620 🥲
If you have broke this rod twice, I guess it is proven that it is not a reliable rod. Cross out from my list. Btw, i have caught 5+lb salmon on my daiwa presso, daiwa spinmatic, okuma guide select, 13fish defy sliver, event the softest st croix panfish, they are all UL rod,and they have no issue whatsoever. Thanks
I wouldn’t say that from my experience. The first time it broke was totally my fault due to using crappy Berkley fireline which had too much memory and wrapped my rod tip. This time, I’m convinced it was some kind of bump I put on the blank along the way. It’s held up to tons of solid fish over the last couple years so if it was a manufacturing problem, it would have failed by now. Either way, time will tell!
Bro sorry bout your Dobyns. Hopefully their warranty service lives up to the price-point.
When it come to line, is it worth making the step up from a standard mono/copolymer to one of these lower end braids?
If you’re going lower end braid, I’d stick with copolymer. If you get Phenix Ironfeather 5lb, Spro Finesse Braid 6lb, or J Braid Grand X8 6lb (quality in that order), you’ll notice a nice difference.
hey Ethan I'm getting into ultralight fishing, and I want to get some mule gear. My preference is panfish but of course I "Fish Anything" what plastic and colors would you recommend. I fish where there's not a lot of clarity.
That rod should not have broken like it did.
Something was fishy about it. I reckon I bumped it in that spot at some point along the way. Not sure!
Do you like it better than the spro finesse braid?
Nope! My top two are Phenix Iron Feather followed by Spro Finesse at this point.
My Sierra Trout & Panfish snapped on its first cast. After being sent the same wrong rod twice. Three total trips to Fedex. My Kaden has been alright but I’m in no rush for anymore Dobyns (now GSM).
Oh no I’m sorry to hear that! I have had a great experience with Dobyns and I hope that continues.
I recently broke my fenwick, completely my fault. That definitely sucked
Ugh I’m sorry to hear that!!
@@FishAnything gives me a reason to get a new rod. Got a 20$ Shakespeare micro replacement for now
that 3x nanobraid is very flat, not sure if I really like it or not...kinda so so to me
Agree that it’s just middle of the pack for me. I like several other line options better.
I'm curious about that Suffix Nano braid. When I first started looking for a good casting line, I got Berkeley Nanofil. Great casting distance, but it frays badly. Anyone have opinions about the Suffix Nano braid?
Nanobraid feels more similar to a standard braid than Nanofil. As mentioned in the video, I think Phenix Ironfeather is the best braid I’ve used for ultralight fishing at this time.
dont like leaders on lighter braid ?
what is your thought on the Daiwa J braid?
One of the best options which is easy to get. I use it on several reels.
@FishAnything great but what one? The 4 strand 8 strand or the grand?
Have you ever tried Reaction tackle brand ? I have found that their braids meets all my requirements. I haven't tried a large amount of different brands, but, I would really like to get your opinion. The price is unbeatable.
Hated the Reaction Tackle braid I bought for catfishing, it really didn't work well with the heavy bottom rigs. Took it off after only a couple trips.
I’ll have to give it a look. I have a hard time testing large quantities of lines because I hate wasting a good spool.
@@FishAnything I only use it for U.L. Crappie 3 Lb. and 6 Lb.. You can get it in 150 yd. spools and if you watch every once in awhile they will have it on sale.
Is there a nano braid that doesn't need a leader? I ain't doing all that lol
Lol technically you don’t need a leader for braid but I just find I’m significantly more confident with clear line. If you don’t want to deal with it, I’d recommend just going straight copolymer or ester.
Always a bad day when you break a good rod...Always a WORSE day when it happens at the fishing hole! A month ago I broke a new spinning rod setting the drag...Damn rod never got wet! Of course I got a store refund, but WTF?
Its all sponsored ,dont worry
What’s all sponsored? 🧐 I pay for all my gear and have no rod affiliation so I’m curious what you’re referring to?
@@FishAnything Are brands not sending you free stuff so that you can make a good review for them? a lot of youtubers do it this way. Sorry, I thought that
I wish I got free stuff but I rarely do. If I get anything for free, I clarify that in the video. I value transparency and authenticity so I would never lead the people watching my videos in a way that doesn’t convey those things.
I purchased both spools of line, as I have with every single line I’ve used/shown in videos in the past.
@@FishAnything Ow...okay....
By the way, Im a fan of you and your videos, I started UL fishing because of your videos the most....love it and I can not understand why some people fish on trout with a 10-14 ft rod with a 4000 reel....i fish with my 5 gram rod and reel 1000 , much more intense and fun, never going back 💪🏽👍🏼
