The title of Almost Legends is incredibly misleading because despite several of these artists 'demise' they're totally legendary.
100% agree. I was kinda thinking the same thing as i started this video. Id give this video a new title.
My husband was a country musician who has played with Conway Twitty, Jim Stafford, etc. etc. He and Stafford went fishing together, and got so drunk they couldn't fish. The one thing that almost killed my husband was alcohol. He's been clean 30 yrs now. and the hardest thing for him still is trying to live without the adoration of the crowds. Its funny what ego will do to some people. It can utterly destroy them on so many levels.
Thank you for sharing this heartfelt story. It’s amazing to hear about your husband’s journey and resilience. 🎸🙏
It's been so hard for him to get use to not being the center of attention. He knows he just can't do it anymore. I'm very afraid he has cancer and it scares me stupid. The dr. had to take a huge growth off his ear, and it was cancerous.
He is lucky to have you who understands, I never had fame but have been battling the bottle all my life.
I've heard of Conway Twitty, but not Jim Stafford. I'm not a country fan. I thank you, though, for sharing your husband's story. I'm glad he stopped drinking.
@rickroden7666 Cancer of the ear? Don't be afraid; face it and force him to seek
treatment. Sympathy and kindness are a double edged sword. Although they offer relief, that relief ultimately helps one to stay in the dark and ultimately the darkness prevails. Kindness kills! Living in fear, or facing and dealing with the problem. Those are your choices. And the choice is yours.
Yes, I am a TC graduate, so I know. The TC of which I speak was called Daytop. That's my cred.
Act now, @rickroden.
How in the world could they have not mentioned Brian Jones???
Another self destructor like Kurt Cobain and Avicii
They always forget or ignore Brian Jones. I suppose being the founder of The Rolling Stones wasn’t enough of a contribution to Rock and Roll.
It wasn't just the famous. Anyone who was "on the street" and still survived the 60's and 70's should feel some pride over it. Thank God for the 80's.
In 1968 I swore I would never shoot heroin, in 1984 I couldnt get enough. It almost killed me, prison saved me life.
@@pjreynoldsa1 I certainly respect your personal strength and success in prevailing. In my recollection 1984 was already a crack era. Both crack and heroin are a part of many 1000s of tragedies. Good job my brother. Your post made my day.
Alcohol and Drugs destroyed a lot of musicians
I gotta say, David Gilmour was the future of Pink Floyd as a commercial success.
Dark Side of the moon: Gilmour’s music, Water’s lyrics when the two could work together, hard to match
Thank you for posting the video… I noticed a few edits, and would rather have heard everything they talked about, but overall everybody died from miss, treating their body with alcohol, drugs, and or/food. Big name you left off your list is Frank Sinatra… Smoking and drinking alcohol continuously ruined his voice long before he finally died.
Brian Jones ( Rolling Stones) should have been included
Brian Jones is a legend, not an "almost legend".
When Karen Carpenter died, my heart broke. Couldn't help but cry over hearing about her sudden death.
Same, she had the voice of an angel 🙏💔
I met Brian Wilson in about 2001 when a newspaper I worked for was giving him an award. He was a very sweet and friendly person. We hung out for about 30 minutes and ate a plate of cookies together. He was nice.
Jerry Lee Lewis didn't really destroyed his career The man became a hit country singer
Jerry Lee was a great musician, but he was a pervert too. Just a human.... Karen Carpenter was much more tragic figure. Such a beautiful voice and tragic ending.
@@Semprini537If I am correct the UK government asked for him to be deported back to the USA. The US government were not fans of Jerry Lee Lewis - however he is still admired by many followers throughout the US and UK - and elsewhere .
I preferred Jerry Lee’s rock’n’roll , but his country music is also of a high standard .
The best way I ever heard his career described was "Jerry Lee Lewis could have been bigger than Elvis if he hadn't insisted on being Jerry Lee Lewis"
I can't say that death stopped the careers of several of these (particularly Elvis). They had fairly lively post-death activity, almost as if death were a good career move.
But, also, as far as these artists go, their careers might have had a stumble or two, but their place in rock history is secure.
This is primarily a list of musicians who died or ‘retired’ early due to some form of self abuse. Most are still very well known and considered rock/music legions. Perhaps better known than if they had just faded away or done endless tours playing their best music, written thirty or fourth years ago.
WTF is Dennis Quaid doing in here? Why not Val Kilmer also then?
He played Jerry Lee Lewis in a movie "Great Balls of Fire". Not sure why they had him in this because there are plenty of video clips of Jerry himself.
Unreal
From the movie Great Balls of fire. And probably not a whole footage of Jerry Lee
Oh STF up!
many of these artists didn't destroy their careers, but were living with various degrees of mental illness that, in some cases, only became more apparent with drug abuse. Also, Dennis Quaid neither destroyed his career, nor was ever primarily regarded as a musician as much as an actor
Deserving of this spot is also Rick James. Talented not only as a performer, he was a producer as well, spanning tracks from the Temptations to the Mary Jane Girls to Eddie Murphy. But substance abuse issues led him into becoming more and more unreliable over time. He even landed himself in jail for a while. My explanation is a bit oversimplified, so go ahead and read up on this.
How about Amy Whinehouse ?
Recaps keeps saying "mental health" but the common thread is drugs and alcoholism. Johnny Depp said it best; "Don't say 'drug overdose.' It implies there's a correct dose if you can only just get it right."
Drugs, drugs, and more drugs...
So many ultra talented musicians made it to old age. While (most) of the here mentioned artists were undoubtedly very talented, I would never use the word "genius" (or something similar) in describing them or their talent. The fact that they all poisoned themselves, shows that they were far from "genius".
And the general excuse of pressure, stress etc.... well, many of the great musicians, who made it to old age, fought the same battles and struggles, showed that it IS possible to "win".
Yes, some of the people from that list could possibly have given us a lot more great music, but in my opinion, they made a choice.
I remember almost every single one of those deaths. Only one, though, actually saddened me (it didn't surprise me) Elvis. I felt he was pushed into his demise by his greedy "handlers" after he already pretty much accepted that he was no longer "in".
Still, he also gave in to the pressure and, like so many others, made the choice to take the risk.
Sad. But most of them reached their goal of becoming legends. But at what cost?
Movie example: James Dean. Had he lived, would he have ended an old legend or a washed up old diva like Marlon Brando - who was a young legend, but lived on? We'll never know.
Insightful comment. It's true that many talented musicians faced significant struggles. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. 🎶
I guess Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy doesn’t matter because “The Boys Are Back In Town “ has only been used in numerous movies as well as remade by multiple artists
Jimi's death was not from substance abuse but a misunderstanding of his girlfriend's meds
Prescription drugs are still drugs and just as susceptible to abuse. Look at the opiod crisis of today
Jim Morrison? Brian Wilson? Elvis? The depths of obscurity?
Elvis should be ranked at #1
Their careers didn't crumble, their lives did.
These musicians destroyed their LIVES with addictions which I would say trumps their musical careers.
no,it just makes them,more human
what's with all the Dennis Quaid clips?
The only stars I respect are those who haven't destroyed themselves with drugs and alcohol.
No Kurt Cobain? Another 27 club member.....
Iron Maiden are much over 60 and still doing fine. One makes his own decisions.
Bonham,Cobain,Keith Moon....Sid Vicious,Roky Erickson, the list is long
..
The list is too long , alas … Self inflicted outcomes unfortunately 😢😢😢
Yet Jagger & Richards in their late 70’s still living, (2024)playing, performing and I assume doing lots of drugs.
Peter Green, original Fleetwood Mac guitarist was an acid casualty, similar to Syd Barrett. Went way up & never came down
@@NickBradeyin most cases
Jimi's impact was NOT unparalleled. Elvis & the Beatles were .......
I've played bass for 55 years. Lots of paying gigs. I'm NOT dead yet. Hmm...wonder why.
Even now, bass players aren't considered quite as glamorous. Still, the sudden death of John Entwistle of the who and the disappearance of Richey Edmunds are tragic. Do you count the self destructive Sid Vicious or nit?
Nigel in Canada🇨🇦
any one of Janis Joplin's band could have said , " you come home and stay with me and my wife"
they didn't
she sat in a hotel room, by herself , took away her pain of loneliness
... and brian jones! he is the founder of the rolling stones, the most long living rock band of the world !!!
Several of these artists were still at their peak when they ended their *lives* through their addictions. Syd, Sly, and Elvis fit the list because their careers did go downhill while they were still alive. Also, as of this comment, Sly is still alive! The Carpenters just kind of petered out through no fault of Karen's before she tragically died.
The 27 Club.
You forgot Kurt Cobain.
I was thinking Amy Winehouse for #1, or at least on the list. She was becoming much more known for her addictions and public displays at the time she died. Hendrix was still at the top when he had the freak accident with alcohol and sleeping pills. He didn't destroy his career before that.
Where's Brian Jones? Where's John Bonham? Where's Phil Lynnot?
Exactly
Tommy Bolin
To be fair those guys were ROCKERS this is some weaker shyt here
i’ve would’ve included Bon Scott too…
Great points! Brian Jones, John Bonham, and Phil Lynott are legendary and definitely deserve mention. 🎸🔥
Interesting selection, but the title isn't accurate, unless you count addictions as wilful acts within the power of the individuals to control. If not true, then prob only Ike turner can be said to have destroyed his career, due to his abuse leading to Tina leaving him. Similarly, Gary Glitter destroyed his legacy due to paedophilia. But Karen Carpenter and Brian Wilson were clearly severely ill - they didn't destroy their careers consciously.
Brian Wilson, has a sad story, but come on? A teen-surfer themed barbershop quartet vs. the Beatles, the British invasion, & Jimi Hendrix thrown in?
Haha,sour grapes?
Brian Wilson is. A national treasure.
Pet Sounds is better than anything The Beatles ever did.
They've missed out Brian Jones! If ANYONE DETSTROYED THEMSELVES! Take a look at Jones's drug intake and what it did to him and his relationships...
Hendrix was murdered.
During the Brian Wilson story, why was there a picture os Elton John? They look nothing alike.
Why throw Elton in with Brian Wilson? Puke!!
Eddie Fuller!? Accidentally drown in gasoline!??
That's Bobby Fuller, and he didn't drown. The official story is he accidentally succumbed to gasoline fumes in his car, but there's some controversy surrounding the circumstances of his death, and many believe it was foul play.
o, there are so many more...
Peter Green!!!
River Deep Mountain High was a better song when done by The Supremes and Four Tops.
You could add Chris Cornell and many others.
Pretty much any member of a grunge band.
I don't do drugs. But this constant nagging of drugs destroying carriers is totally stupid. 90% of best things in art and music created through distorted minds.. Distorted by alcohol drugs or other things. I think the author of this video should stick to tutoring boy scouts somewhere far far away from rock and roll.
So many unbelieveble talents who went way to early. Pastorius, Layne Staley, Cornell, Weiland, Avici, Winehouse ect. R.I.P. you all.
Janis Joplin was a dreadfully horrible singer.
Why would you lead off with an image of Karen Carpenter ? Just another POOR mini bio of Entertainers ! 😥😥😥😥😥😥😥
What nonsense! RUclips is becoming more and more of a laundry room gossip forum🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You probably are the the only one
Peter Green was a fool
Ike Turner: Great musician, really lousy husband.
You missed Stevie Ray Vaughan
Why would he be on here? He was still just fine at the time of the plane crash, and didn't do that to himself. The list isn't just "artists who died suddenly".
I guess I’m the only one in the world who thought Jimi Hendrix sucked.
and John Lennon
You are the only one
@@petervillalonga1249
Nah, my great Uncle hates him too.
Are you serious?
@@ichthus2188
Yep.
Faith Hill did a better job of “piece of my heart “
Blasphemy!
Are we all forgetting about the one person that fits the description of this video perfectly, CDC'S Bon Scott?
Creepy fact, Bon Scott said that I'd anything ever happened to him, he wanted to be replaced by Brian Johnston... and he was.
Personally, I would have gone with Angry Anderson and this is why. Here he's singing Hugheay To Hell with the female Bon Scott, Sarah McCloud. Awesome.
