Multipotentialite, or Master of None?

  • "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Throughout our childhood and into our formative years, this question is asked of us so many times, and with it comes the expectation that we will eventually find the single profession that best suits us. But what happens for those of us who have multiple passions, multiple aptitudes, multiple potential career paths? Today I explore the merits behind Emelie Wapnick's model for the 'multipotentialite,' and the opposing idea that "a jack of all trades is a master of none." Is there even a correct answer to be found in this particular inquiry? Let's discuss. :)
Emelie Wapnick's awesome TED Talk can be found here - www.ted.com/ta...

I think the important part for us MultiPotentialite is like what Emily had mentioned, "Idea Synthesis"... Whereby we synthesize all interests into a path of its own, creating something entirely different.

When I watched that TED talk it was a relief to me to discover that I was not alone and many people around the world feel the same way. The solution? I not yet found - I do not know if there's any - but I have dedicated myself to try to combine my passions and see where they take me. ;)

Life is a buffet. And just like a diet rich in variety, our professions can be equally diverse, nurturing our spirit and our wallet at the same time. The trick is to not get overwhelmed by the buffet of choices and freeze in line, never putting anything on our plate. I say NIBBLE AWAY! Give yourself permission to enjoy the flavors of the day (current professional interests), but remember to keep your overall nutrition (mental, emotional and financial health) in mind. Overeating is as unhealthy as starving yourself. I think learning this balance is how we become a MASTER at living the life of a multipotentialite. Love your thoughts, Nicole. Thanks for putting this out there!!

I'm a starter. I don't like to finish things. I'll read all but the last in a book series, I'll play all the games of a series but not complete the final chapter. I've been this way since I was a kid. I used to find myself to be deficient because I couldn't "follow through" but I've come to an understanding of my own personal path. I. Love. Starting. Everything. So now I'm working on a business that will help people star in the their own businesses, get the ball rolling and back out. I adore watching people succeed at their passions. That's my passion. So far it's been a popular idea. I believe the choice between multipotentialite and the master of none archetypes is dependent on the person. If you're not willing to be open and creative with the energy you were given then your chances of balancing out and finding peace are far slimmer than if you create your reality yourself. Takes a lot of inner work but it's 💯 worth it. Great video. Thank you (:

What I got from Emilys talk was to synthesize your interests and the intersection is where your true calling is. You may need to follow a few more leads, but the result will be your very own customed designed life path

"To be or not to be, that's the question." I think there are many amazing possibilities and thank God they all exist because we can do and be whatever we want to. For me the most important thing is to be happy, you can choose to be a teacher, a lawyer, a vet or a housewife, but you better do your best in order to feel satisfied and happy with your choices.
P.S. I love when my phone rings and it means it's a new video of yours. Thanks for bringing all this discussion. Much love! 🌻👍❤

If there is one thing get gets me it is how much I share with others. I don't have several passions. In whole I am an artist. But my passions ignite, flare, and douse at random. I currently have, all unfinished, a book; a movie screenplay; an album; numerous artworks; and an app idea. I watch my ambition die so often I suffer every time a new idea sparks. I know it will lead nowhere. I am confident that it will go without fruition. And I feel helpless to change that. On top of all of my attempts are numerous product ideas that have never stepped beyond a thought because I see the future of it.
I know we are all different. Some of us will succeed in crafting a fulfilling life, and career, out of our multipotential minds. But I do believe others do, and will continue to, suffer their own existence. Just wishing to find something that they can follow to the end.

Novelist, poet, game designer, film designer, historian, trainer, paranormal investigator, and Montauk Boy -- Having explored a lot of paths in a long, busy life (natural energy, no coffee), but with a singular one running throughout, I'll offer up both perspectives (I'm a Gemini): It's rewarding to explore a lot, because you get a taste for more and have less regrets of "would I have been happy if I tried that . . . ?" while also having a lifetime passion offers a pillar when life is rough. I suggest, as life is nature amplified, be like your own body -- A core skeleton of one good passion to run throughout your life (your family, your garden, your books, whatever), but also "flesh it out" with a lot of dabbling in other passions, say a few years each, just to see. At the least, you gain wisdom.

I think most people miss is the point "idea synthesis" or our ability to draw two passions together to make our own path. let us say in my case writer, film-maker, and powerlifter. i could potentially one day have my own youtube show doing just that. making mini documentary flicks of myself and other powerlifters battling the stereotypes and misconceptions of being skinny and looking like you lift 500 pounds compared to being labeled "fat" and actually lifting 500 pounds. just little things like that im sure the lady in the ted talk was trying to say. this all of course my personal opinion but i feel i said my peace. :)

Lack of following one path does not necessarily = not following through. To me, it = having a greater understanding of our world. Music & sports have pretty been much the constants in my life, and I've had the great fortune to have professions in both. Took a year off school to tour with a band (drum roadie), then, when that was finished, continued school to become an Athletic Trainer (Sports Medicine professional). I'd had other majors along the way, but it was Athletic Training that the rays of light shone down upon, so to speak. However, all the other areas of study have constantly come in very handy in working with athletes. One of my first degrees was in Psychology -- talk about useful in AT! I also studied Sociology, Anthropology, and have degrees in Kinesiology with concentrations in Athletic Training (where I also double majored with Psychology), and a double major of Biomechanics/Exercise Physiology for my Master's. In my world, life would be rather boring and drab to have just one interest, and I dare anyone to say I'm a master of none! Politics, sports, medical topics, music, world events? I can speak intelligently about any of them because I'm not simply a master of one. :D

I've always used that phrase 'jack of all trades, master of none' to describe myself to others. Firefighter, lifeguard, chef, governess, cleaner, scientist - to name a few... what I do doesn't matter so much to me as long as I stay true to who I am along the way. I think the issue is that for many people what they do becomes a core part of their identity - if you already know who you are than you don't have the same pressures to choose just one thing to do or follow. Personally my identity primarily lies with my faith - that give me focus and a constant passion which will always remain and underlie everything else I choose to do in life.

I get what she’s saying it’s more toward being consistent in something to where you can have a fulfilling life and or being potentially gifted for the rest of your life and what I think is when we spend time on our self that time as well to take for our craft. But then as far as having a family and finding a potential partner and finding who we’re going to have kids with or who we’re going to marry that’s a whole Nother life expectancy as well and also possible gift, so both pies have time to take and also time to learn. The question just is how do you maintain everything at once? That’s from my understanding of this video

I believe as a multi potentialite we make the most of our life by accessing a variety of things. I believe there will be pros and cons to a lot of things and it's whether we accept or decline certain roads. As a person there is no clear path until your dead and u won't know everything.

Or... easily bored? I think we are all born 'multipotentialites', but a lot of people who have difficulty maintaining long focus (and that's most of the world in today's 24/7 amusement park aka the online world) are just seeking another jolt of discovery. What's wrong with that? Nothing, except finding a sustainable and rewarding career. And that's why so many people line up for creative career training, hoping to find some larger-than-survival meaning they can't possibly discover in lower end jobs. When was the last time a 'multipotentilite' listed skill sets like, 'accounting/bookkeeping, pharmacology, library technician'? In nearly every case it's a list heavily filled with creative skillsets.
Which brings us to the cruel reality of creating for survival. It's not a bell curve, and the bulk of professional creative workers feel underpaid (relative to skill levels in 'boring' non-creative work) and less respected -- and subject to massive market disruptions (aka style).
I think that the idea of broadening your knowledge and experience across disciplines is a noble ideal -- only, how many can afford the luxury of investing the necessary time and focus of such broadband skillbuilding while trying to pay the rent, buy food, student loans, etc.? Maybe, by adding the label of 'multipotentialite' as an option to world struggling just to survive, we're feeding into that mythology that it's all possible if you just become professionally creative.
You can't ignore the reality of opportunity levels ('luck') and relative class privilege when you actually plan your career. And yet... judging by the creative college programs waiting lists... lots of us do.

I have this problem in a way, I'm 45 want to pursue my passion about health and wellness but also am deeply interested in inner child work and depth psychology, but I dont have 12 years to blow away in school, doing both so how can I do something that is kind of both? Get my masters in psychology then become a certified sports nutrition coach? Or get my degree in nutrition and become a dietitian and then take a course to become a life coach? I dive myself nuts with this dilemma!!!

This from someone who can't follow through with keeping her nails manicured. Chipped nail polish is a big indicator of inability to follow through. I agree with the person who commented that having many interests and figuring out a way to follow them all is not the equivalent of not following through. If you're that interested in following through...start with the small stuff...like maintaining your nail polish.

    • @NicolePacentOfficial
      @NicolePacentOfficial  6 лет назад +1

LaDonna Paulk Thanks for your opinion. To be perfectly honest, I paint my nails maybe three times a year because honestly I don't really care about them. My lack of nail mintenance has a little to do with follow through that way and far more to do with the fact that there are many other things I would prefer to do than maintain my nails. Like make videos, write essays, volunteer at the LGBT Center, spend time with my family, etc etc etc. Not a girly girl that way. Never have been. I'm pretty okay with my nails the way they are, thanks. ;)

I think as long as you don't choose your big goal you won't know if you should stick with 1 thing or be master of none.
as long as we choose not to choose our goal it's just a question of what would bring us the most joy or fulfilment in life. and if the goal is the fulfilment in life then it is kind of egoistic and doesn't really matter. Imagine how people will talk about a person when he's gone :"he/she was living her life and was able to feel fulfilment most of the time" - applause.. can it really be the goal? does it matter?
but then again, if we choose to do something big for the humanity - who cares? each person will die anyway.. and the children of their children will as well. soon maybe it will be possible to live forever but again - so what? now you're living forever - why should that matter?
please no religious bscomments here lol...
so all that being said the real question is : does it all matter at all?
and if your answer is definitely a yes , for what ever reason, than you most likely will divert into the philanthropy, which will facilitate the finding an answer to the question "should I focus on many areas at once or be a master at one?", because in this case you just pragmatically analize your best developed talents and skills and calculate your action plan that would most likely maximize the well being of humanity overall.
and then other ethical questions will arise which you didn't even think of while being stuck on this first stage where you can't decide what is your big goal. one of these ethical questions is how exactly do you define well being of humanity? could you justify to develop a healthy food chain in the US while people in poor countries are starving? could you justify spending you time on building an infobusiness providing coaching and info products for those who can afford them while people in poor countries can't even read?
the Jewish Tora people would give you a simple answer which is God made everyone for a reason, so as well the illiterate as well as the geniuses are needed in our world system. but this would just mean that we can tolerate the violence and rape and poverty in poor countries - and we find ourselves just where we began.
so what is you big goal?
is it philanthropic? then the answer to the question of "should focus on many things or become a master of one" is just a matter of a max benefit calculation.
or is your big goal to be fulfilled? then you can't do nothing wrong, the answer is again a cold hearted calculation of what could give you the most fulfilment. calculate and take action. might be one thing, many or a prioritized combination.
but what do you do if you aren't fully convinced of the philanthropy?
    that is my question.

hey nicole ...i like your video. i am also in the same situation in which you are....thinking like you..and want answer ...have many interest and same time i also watch that multipotenlite video...and i also relate to that definition...but then i also think that ..if i want be big enough to world know i need to be best in the one single thing which you love you to do and by doing it so many years and practice and leaning more and more and get expert or master in that thing and then only you can be great in that thing.....like sachin tendulkar in cricket and india he is god. bcoz he is doing one thing that is playing cricket for years...and shahrukh khan ..acting ...lata mangeshkar for singing ...messy bcoz foodball...mickel jacson bcoz rock music...mark zuckerburg bcoz facebook...steave jobs bcoz apple..like so many ...big names for the only one thing that they love and they did or do...........but if you think you are multipotentialite the n how to find that one thing which you can love and can do for lifetime and that can lead you to sucess.... ???
