NYPD test launches electric cars

- The New York City Police Department has launched a test flight of nearly 200 electric cars in an effort to reduce the city's carbon footprint. It's the largest electric police vehicle trial in the country. Kris Van Cleave has more.

Electric actually makes a lot of sense for the police considering how often police cars are left in idle
Wouldn’t be bad for garbage trucks either if the didn’t need to run a compactor
@@tuckerstafford8266 Miami has some EV mack trucks already.
Except when the car is on 20 hours a day and doesn't have hours to recharge
@@shm-62u30 Of those 20 hours, maybe 5 are spent driving. The rest are spent idling on the side of the road, or parked while cops are outside of them. Fast chargers that can go from 0-80% charge in about 10-20 minutes are also a thing, and being installed in places like restaurants. So cops can charge while eating lunch.
@@themidnighttavern6784 Idling still takes power, they've got all kinds of equipment running in them, and I'm sure many cops use their A/C. Diesel makes the most sense for police.
They actually look pretty cool. Always loved the look of the Mach E
Don’t forget normal police cars are used two shifts in a 24 hour period. Now you’ve restricted yourself to one car per day while it charges overnight
Why would it need to charge overnight? The Mach-e can be charged in less than 30 minutes.
EV's are the future....I have an EV, Nissan Leaf....I hope the US Gov does MORE...to help average American to afford an EV. Tax Credits are stupid for EV'S Why not give us a EV down Payment
The worst thing they did was buy a Ford Mach-E electric vehicle. Some of the issues that Mach-E owners have encountered include battery cell failures, charging system and electrical problems, and frozen display screens. Mach-E models have even become immobile at times. The electric vehicle lost its Consumer Reports recommendation because of its many reliability issues
What do you expect from a Ford.
So it really is a Ford!

They just asked people to use less power during peak time including not charging EVs during peak time. Just like they have been doing for air conditioners for 50 years.

*when the average person can barley afford a decent car but the government can spend our hard earned money on overly priced electric cars*
You think that ICE police cars are cheap?
@@Simon-dm8zv Multiple times cheaper than an electric car
@@Kiwi-rn4pp Do you not understand that you don't have to worry about maintenance on an EV? There are no more oil changes, no worrying about transmissions, etc. You literally only have to worry about occasionally changing breaks, swapping tires, and refilling the wiper fluid. Not only that, they are also WAY better for city driving and save tons of money from not having to use gasoline. I would rather my tax money goes to something like this that actually SAVES money than an expensive and wasteful ICE car.
@@ProXcaliber It doesn't save money at all because the battery goes bad and it's still ridiculously expensive to replace. Tesla charges 15k for a new Model 3 battery, for that money you can get a new ICE car. and then there's the fact that the battery degrades with use like a smartphone, so range gets worse. Whereas a 20 year old Crown vic will run like new with just basic maintenance
@@Kiwi-rn4pp You are thinking on consumer levels, while this is on a fleet level. The savings on maintenance alone will easily offset the cost of battery degradation and replacement. As an example, there is a reason Amazon is investing so heavily into Rivian to give them EV delivery vans. The savings are astronomical when you are talking about hundreds or thousands of cars. This is also the reason that large electric trucks are also in high demand. These companies would not be investing in EVs so heavily if they didn't save money and increase profit margins.
This will be their worst decision. Imagine a car chase when the battery is 20%
I can’t trust a single driver who isn’t grabbing 10 and 2 during high speed maneuvers, that’s common knowledge right?

The point is that the same dumb cop who forgets to keep his car fueled is going to be the same dumb cop who forgets to charge the car, not to mention they can easily have charging stations at the HQ and just plug it in every time they stop by or leave work. They aren't driving like 400 miles a day, most of the time they just post up in one spot anyway.
The folks who think emergency charging takes 4 hours haven’t been paying attention. That’s old school AC charging. DC fast charging at public stations takes a Mach-E from 10-80 in 45 minutes if a long shift needs it. Not like their cars never sit idle during shift now….

I find it hard to believe that this will be efficient. Those consumer vehicles' batteries don't account for all those additional electrical drain placed on the batteries with the sirens, and other police equipments. And in NY it seems that they use the sirens all the time. Oh and the dependency on the electric grid seems like a bad idea to me. I am sure they have backup generators at their base but they can't just rely on charging elsewhere easily. And not mention the weight of these cars. These things are already heavy with the battery packs and adding more equipment makes them heavier. Also it would be super interesting to know how much they are spending on these vehicles.
I'm not sold on EVs being the solution for everything but for city policing they actually make sense. So much time is spent idle wasting fuel and accelerating maintenance to make up the cost difference. They will come nowhere near their range in a daily shift in the city so I don't think a few LED bars on top will make a difference.
Modern tech in a car that literally is modern tech is negligible. If I can run my heat on high for 3 solid days on a single charge, a few minutes of siren and efficient led blinky lights aren’t going make a spec of difference.
@@Lucas-gu7sj agreed on the idling. Also the LED bars were just one of the many equipment they'll have retrofit into the car. I can't imagine Ford wanting to hook all of that into standard battery pack of these Mach-E's.
@@Emceepe LEDs aren't the only police equipment in a patrol car now, is it? :) They'll need to augment so many more things that will share the same battery pack. Unless Ford gives them an auxillary battery pack. I would image a patrol car absolutely cannot have anything affect its driving range aside from the standard things like the HVAC and any other core modules that will need to be powered by the factory battery pack.

I think in the future most thieves will face new problem with escaping cops, Because it will be so easy to grab their location and arrest them lol. Unless they have a way to hack it
They make it sound like electricity is free!
its much cheaper than all the gasoline that police cars use
Good thing urban driving is an electric cars wheelhouse. ICE cars do better at speed/highway speeds
If you think about it by 2030 all car manufacturers are mandated to only sell electric vehicles by then. The rest of the Emergency vehicles may follow just for the change and convenience.
Hopefully there won't be any blackouts or power outages...
You do realize gas pumps dont work during blackouts and power outages either, right?
@@functionatthejunction And you do realize gas can be manually pumped out of the tanks is those conditions, right?
@@imkeerock LOL you think gas stations are equipped with manual pumps?
It seems like charging would be an issue in the winter when a lot of power goes to heat. If not an issue, then they should consider reduced charge due to age and battery replacement frequency. That price may be significant even after taking idling into account.
Do...do you think they didn't take all maintenace values into consideration?
New York can...but when LAPD purchased BMW I3 years ago for detectives....no one drove it for work, only used it for personal business.
Tbf the design choices made by BMW vs Ford would make the difference here. Plenty of units across the country have adopted Model Ys and Mach-Es and fight over who gets to drive them.
I like the idea, but the vehicle wasn’t designed for police work. If this idea takes off, Ford can make a version for this purpose, just like the Crown Vic and Explorer. 👍👍 two thumbs up! Go Big Blue!!!
