    @mjay4700 4 года назад +8

    Yeah I also do not understand why these guys are slicing and cracking the stones in half, when they know there's Opal in there.
    I think they're just excited and want to see more of the color, and "crack the egg open" to see the surprise inside. However, in cracking that egg, they're losing a lot of value in stones that would've been 2x the size. Guy slices the rock right in half, then opens it up to show the opal is now cut in half. So a 120ct stone is now 2 60ct pieces. Doesn't seem logical.

    • @Sinbadthesailor52
      @Sinbadthesailor52 4 года назад +5

      M Jay
      They are slicing it because buyers will only pay for what they see. If the rock is 15cm x 15cm and is only showing one little seam where it has been knocked the buyer won’t pay much for it. Cut it in half it could show half a dozen seams, cut it in half again and if it is still showing half a dozen seams, you have hit a jackpot. Massive increase in value to what the original piece was showing. I’m speaking from a miner and cutters experience. I mined and cut boulder for 30 years. I even worked in this mine with Aaron’s father for a few weeks a lot off years ago.

      If a miner relies on a diamond saw to cut right through a stone he risks shattering the opal that it hides. By making a shallow cut then splitting it with a hammer and wedge it will split along the grain and hardly damage the opal at all.

      Because people who cut the opals buy them with the other rock still ontop of it. The best way to show the true size of the opal contained inside Is to cut the bolder in half. It's the only way to show the stream goes through the entire rock and you will get more value out of it this way. They're not stupid, there's a reason why every single miner does the same. It's not the job of the miners to make the whole opal visible.

    Obviously these guys are experts and this is the way opal mining is done, but the way they are so rough with such a fragile material and how the break rocks in half and and up with two small pieces rather than cutting it properly and having larger prices. I don't get it, literally cutting opal bearing rough pieces directly in half and splitting the opal in half instead of working closer and closer to the colour, seems lazy. You'd never see a sapphire miner cut straight through the middle of a rock, they work it as they read the rock to find the most amount of gem

    • @Rob_Fordd
      @Rob_Fordd 4 года назад +1

      I think part of it is just because of the TV show aspect, like they gotta show the audience something real, and the producers don't want to film months in advance + shell out for having this stuff professionally cut.

    • @nstratford9073
      @nstratford9073 4 года назад

      @@Rob_Fordd Yea of for sure they need to see action and the whole process from mining to a finished cut opal is months I believe, but I'm pretty sure it's common practice to just whack their boulders in half to reveal the opal inside, that's with boulder opal anyway. I just feel like of they were a bit more careful it would pay off more. Black and crystal opal is different. Someone correct me if I'm wrong! Also we are talking about good ol Aussie country boys, they don't tend to fluff around
