Koroit opal is the best kind of opal in the world, there is nothing like it anywhere in the world, its such a pleasure to find as you never know what your going to get, well done documenting it sandy.
I bought some Koroit opal once. I started working on it and it just seemed to melt, until I had nothing. I wasn't too happy and kind of gave up on it. But then... I bought some other pieces about a year later and realized that some of it is garbage and some of it is... some of the finest material I've ever worked with. The Koroit opal you are seeing here is some of the best you can find. They showed a couple of soft specimens, but most of it was hard and beautiful. Look at the patterning in the very first boulder they show you. Those little spirals, usually with an opal lining. Mesmerizing to work on. Thanks for the video, mate! Stunning!
There's a latin phrase that is used quite often when buying opal "caveat emptor" which translates to "let the buyer beware". Buying rough opal, no matter which field it is from, is a tricky business. But you are right, when you get the hard, patterned Koroit opal, there is nothing better. I am lucky to have been involved in finding and working with it. Best,
Thank you for a look. All opals are so different. Boulder opal has it's own beauty. Bugger. All opals are beautiful. Lol. I've been turned into an addict........

I have heard there is, or likely was a bacteria in all opal. Speculation has been made that the colors we see is their waste. Wouldn't that be funny, we pay thousands for nothing more than poop in glass hahaha
Yes. In Queensland boulder opal is generally shallow and is open cut mined with excavators just as in this vid. The only time explosives would be used is where the opal layer is under a hill with a hard (silcrete) cap, buit never near the opal level.
@@BoulderOpal What about the others? I ve bought a boulder opal from Winton, and I really worry about consequences, you know. I thank you to take time to answer me. 🙂
@@lumpinee1099 All miners have to deposit a bond for rehabilitation purposes when they apply for a mining claim. The country out there is very remote and marginal. Although it may appear 'messy', the end result is that water can penetrate the normally hard surface and the mounds catch windblown seed so that regrowth in mining areas is always far more than the natural surrounds which is desirable.
I have an odd question. What’s the deal on all the flies swarming on all you miners. I would have thought there wouldn’t even much for them to lay eggs on and reproduce out there. But still I would love to come there on vacation just to find a few opals. Yours are beautiful, thanks for sharing.
They were bad when I was out there earlier this year but speaking to the miners recently, they are now complete gone. It's a weird seasonal thing. As far as a food source goes, there are thousands of feral goats out there as well as some cattle and sheep as well. best,
I noticed them watching discovery channels Outback Opal Hunters. And in shows everyone was swatting at them to keep them from their mouth and face. I just thought how much crap opal miners have to deal with, glad to hear the flys aren’t aggravating through the whole opal season. Thanks, for that info.

Boulder Opal thank you. Any sites that you sell on? Or recommend? Is it possible to buy direct from your self or other mines?
Etsy's a good source, ebay use to be until they started getting greedy.

Maybe I should give the gold prospecting away and do a little of this instead? Nice video mate!
Mate, if you're finding gold, stick with that!
