He is fantastic! I'm an Aussie myself, about 800 kms from Coober Pedy and George's charisma & attitude is so very common amongst many hard knox happy Australians. Many people from overseas adapt so well to this blessed country's humour, wit and charm. I know a 77 year old Spanish fella, Jose, who has lived here most his life and has still retained his accent but is absolutely bogan hilarious and proudly Australian. Similarly to this dude. Sure is a great place to live.
Has that ever happened? Maaany times! It's no problem! Also, most opals you'll see are faux opals. Real opals are rather expensive and not something you buy in any store.
what a nice and funny man. the last part where he said I could be your grandpa but im your friend was one of the best things haha. and then with the accent makes it even funnier
Manu Talamoa typical old Greek bloke. We have a lot of them here in Australia, and they're always fun to chat to. While serving as a police officer in the region from 1996 to 2004 I mined opal in my spare time. Gadassi became a valued and trusted friend and mentor who would no doubt remember my close friend, police colleague and mining mate and I as George and Mick. As you no doubt learned for yourself from his remarks like 'yeah or what I put the rope there for?' Gadassi's sense of humor is as dry as an outback summer and his intense, almost limitless energy is analogous to the explosives he uses to mine. Have no doubt that Gadassi can swarm up a safety rope so fast he virtually pops out of a shaft like a cork. On one occasion while prospecting old claims his generator broke down so Gadassi climbed a regular shaft freehand without the benefit of a safety rope. When he did so that time he startled the heck out of Judy who was waiting at the top of the shaft he originally went down when he walked up behind her. He is kind, generous, wise in the ways of life and men, as sharp as a razor blade and tough as the chisel on a jackhammer (as a young man he was a sergeant in the Greek army). My mate George and I enjoyed the hospitality of Gadassi and his late wife Judie at their home in Coober Pedy on numerous occasions. Gadassi helped George and I in many ways from advice on mining from safety to geology and guiding us with regard to pegging a claim. (The shaft on that one was 100 feet deep) He also classed the occasional bit of opal for us and all the while generously imparted his almost limitless knowledge and understanding of all things related to opal. You could not have had a better guide and mentor during your stay in Coober Pedy than Gadassi, he is a bit of a local legend among people who know gem quality in men when they encounter it. (He wasn't joking about the ladies either and I assure you it is a subject he takes seriously indeed.) If he is your friend, be certain that it is for life.
Cool fact: The biggest opal found in Australia was in 1956 and it was 17,000 carats. In todays money it could have been worth up to $250,000,000 That is crazy!!
**Horizontal, but yes, I loved that quote. Particularly because as an engineer, I'm constantly correcting people calling columns [vertical members] as beams [horizontal members] and vice versa.
Do you have any recommended courses? I'm going to use it for Spanish. I'm also interested in some of the history and chemistry once because I'm weaker in those areas. Your feedback is appreciated, I would like to know if being a long-term sponsor partner with them makes sense.
I've watched "Understanding Greek and Roman Technology", with the family and quite enjoyed it. Next by the same prof is "Understanding the Worlds Greatest Structures" My wife + son have gone through "Fundamentals of Photography", and "Turning Points in Modern History" and she liked that even more. She thought the modern history one was really good at showing connections. I thought the greek/roman technology one was fascinating because of the sheer ingenuity and ability of some of this engineering going on two thousand years ago.
I use it for homeschooling too. I enjoyed "Understanding Modern Electronics", and I've watched "Chemistry, 2nd Edition" and liked it. I love Great Courses plus because it's a lot easier than ordering DVDs and also its easier to watch on smart TVs.
+OJ The Aviator, +Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) How much detail do they dive into? Is it like watching a discovery/history channel doc or is more like a uni-course? For example does "Understanding Modern Electronics" explain the science behind electronics and dive into how to design said electronics or is more of a "Hey look electrons! They go trough some silicone and BAAM you got RUclips"?
You really got me on this one! I became a jewelers apprentice about 9 months ago. I’m not a jewelry wearer but the tiny tools got me interested. I decided the ONLY piece I would ever wear is an opal I found myself. I still don’t wear jewelry but it’s some of the most fulfilling creative work I have ever been apart of. Opal are the coolest!!!
I travelled to Cooper Pedy in 1985. As a young Canadian backpacker I attended a New years eve party at an opal mine. The local people were definitely a special breed. This video brought back a flood of memories. All good!!
While I haven't used the Great Courses Plus myself, a lot of channels I watch advertise them and I know viewers there have had pretty good experiences with it.
I would love it if you gave it a shot with me and help me decide if they should be a long-term sponsor. Here's the link. Feel free to cancel before the one month free trial is over. ow.ly/OoWp302du3z
I was on the edge the last time they sponsored you, but this new video has sold me. You meet the strangest people and do the craziest things. So I'm signing up. Do me a solid and tell your wife, next time, okay?
I'm sort of curious if The Great Courses is still relevant as a paid service. I don't doubt the quality of their content, but with the amount of free University level courses there are from places like MIT open courseware and Coursera, I'm just wondering if the value of their service makes it worthwhile over the free content.
I've seen this George guy like 4 times on other programs, he must be the guy they call to ferry around the tourists who come looking for opals. "Oh great another Yank or Brit come looking for shiny rocks, better call the Greek" At this point old Georgy has probably made more money from being a tour guide than from actually mining for Opals.
This video from 1989 has him. He is credited as Andrew, which is his first name. It also has the same drill machine. the process has not changed at all: ruclips.net/video/bjomq-HKLd4/видео.htmlm38s
I just showed this video to my dad, we were talking about mining and stuff like that. After about half a minute he said "Oh, I didn't knew that!" - mission accomplished! He subscribed to your channel :D
What do you call it when you just learn or read or see something and then, all of a sudden, you start noticing that thing getting referenced in other places? We just watched The Rescuers Down Under, and McLeech mentions that there's "nothing but opal mines as far as the eye can see" or something like that. And now this...
That's a pretty disturbing name for anybody who knows who Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof actually were and what deplorable acts they committed alongside their fellow terrorists...
This is easily one of the most interesting channels on RUclips. Destin, you rock man! And you really do help all of us get a little smarter every day that we learn from you. 🤜🏼 🤛🏼
Destin is so blessed to do such amazing things for his RUclips channel. Thanks for taking us on these journeys with you, I never want these videos to end.
got a lot of laughs from georgie! love the part where you ask him if he's still fit enough to climb out without the winch, the response was pretty much "well of course i can, if i couldn't i wouldn't be down there would i you simpleton!"
I also love Opal!!! That is my favorite gem alongside Alexandrite. The way she looks, and her bow, and her light arrows, wait, are we talking about the same thing?
btw to add a little more basic knowledge, once you "peg" a claim, you have 10 days to lodge an application with the department of mines and petroleum, other wise someone else can steal your claim by re-pegging it and lodging their application :D
Just found Smarter Every Day. You mined for opal and found treasure. I found out Great Courses is online and offers a month free through Great. Courses Plus. Learning is my treasure. Thank you!
i toured this few years back, was 55 celsius in Summer with flies everywhere. as soon as you even go a few meters into a tunnel the flies bugger off and the temp drops. you can even camp under ground . the place is crazy. the hotel pool was so hot it was like a bath. not a single person stayed in pool they would simply dip into water for literally seconds then get out to let the breeze do its thing. Its not a exaggeration to consider this place Mars like
thats why they live underground, temp drops no matter what temp above ground, broken hill had to temporarily put hospital patients in one of their silver/lead/zinc mines because of a massive heatwave

Think he is greek
He reminds me a lot of a Turkish soccer coach I once had. Lots of fun! Georgie is a great character.
Tiago de Pádua don’t talk about Dustin like that!
I think he is from Greece too 😂
That old man is a precious jewel. I wish I had a grandpa like him. XD
I wish I had a grandpa

Keep it light
He likes them young, so u gotta chance
Grandpa so you have chosen.... death
You could say he is an... Opal
That old man's like someone right out of a movie. Respect.
Opal Kings I think it is by Discovery, he's one of the main people on that show.
"I could be your grand pop. Doesn't matter, I am your friend." GEORGIE THO

"You can still do it?" "then why i put the rope for?" He is a character.
Meets strange guy, goes out in the desert and gets dropped in a hole... sounds like a weird date to me :-)
a wired date or the start of a CSI crime scene xD
i was waiting for a "it puts the lotion on" reference.
He is Greek that’s why he sounds strange, kardashi means brother and southern Greeks use it to call others like this
Old George showed him just how deep his shaft goes ;)
Sounds like Aladdin to me
Georgie looks like that grandpa or uncle who shows you everything and teaches you all you need to know in life
He's on a tv series done by the discovery network
“WHY I PUT THE ROPE FOR” he isn’t the one we want, but he’s the one we need
*Deserve
I died at that piece of amazing!
He is EXPLICITLY the one we want what are you TALKING ABOUT!!??

1# Rule NEVER DIG STRAIGHT DOWN
At a beach or in soft sand, yes! Hard ground is a completely different thing. You either get it or not. The ground characteristics your digging through is quite varied and determines what's up..
@@sailingsolar Its a Minecraft joke...
@@issame37 Oh! Never played that. I came from a different time. Thanks

@@MH-nx6cf Makes sense,,, if your gigging in Hawaii. I'm in Texas, you would hit oil.
Did you ever play, the game "Gig Dug"? I use to play that for quarters. Cheers.
If this old man started his own RUclips channel, I would defiantly subscribe.
What would you be defying?
"I'm subscribing... but I don't want to!
Old guys like this are a gem themself. They too have a high value.
5:34 "Why is the rope for??" -George
HAHAAHAHAHAHHA.
The Great Courses and Smarter Every Day fit very nicely together. Also I like how you are very honest with your viewers and saying "Hey this is a sponsor that I'm telling you about, you know how these work so let's see if it's actually something you want or not." I really like the idea of you not just saying it like you are reading it from a script but saying it as you actually are a person. Keep doing that

"The rope is there so you can climb up! ...wow ...have you ever had to do that?"

Can you have George on every episode?
Haha that would be amazing but also pretty strange
A cameo every now and then would be welcome.
I love George, he is absolutely grea
That would be AWSOME :D
He is fantastic!
I'm an Aussie myself, about 800 kms from Coober Pedy and George's charisma & attitude is so very common amongst many hard knox happy Australians. Many people from overseas adapt so well to this blessed country's humour, wit and charm.
I know a 77 year old Spanish fella, Jose, who has lived here most his life and has still retained his accent but is absolutely bogan hilarious and proudly Australian. Similarly to this dude.
Sure is a great place to live.
That guide is freaking awesome :x Such a simple guy, such a sense for humor xD
Has that ever happened? Maaany times! It's no problem!
Also, most opals you'll see are faux opals. Real opals are rather expensive and not something you buy in any store.
"Can you still climb it?"
"Why do you think I put the rope?!"
The guide really made the video.
Andy B its like the vice scopolamine video
what a nice and funny man. the last part where he said I could be your grandpa but im your friend was one of the best things haha. and then with the accent makes it even funnier
"We're doing this because women like pretty things on their ears" hahahahahhahaha lmao 8:10
Or maaybee they do that because men like women with pretty things on their ears?

That guy! "Why you think I have the rope for?" LOL!!
That old man made this video entertaining.
Manu Talamoa typical old Greek bloke. We have a lot of them here in Australia, and they're always fun to chat to. I've worked with a couple over the years and always had a good laugh with them ... just don't catch them on a bad day because they tend to swear their heads off at you in various Greek/Italian/etc. dialects haha
Yeah he savage.
Of course, he is Greek ;)
1:18 Καρντάση is greek, it comes from the turkish kardaş and it means "brother".
So "Kardashian" also (probably) means brother? :S
That's armenian and --I think it means "brotherly" or "brother-like"-- apparently it means "stone carver" (see below)
"Kardashian" probably means Bitchy in greek. Q.Q

ErebosGR Love and respect from Turkey my Greek friend :)
While serving as a police officer in the region from 1996 to 2004 I mined opal in my spare time.
Gadassi became a valued and trusted friend and mentor who would no doubt remember my close friend, police colleague and mining mate and I as George and Mick.
As you no doubt learned for yourself from his remarks like 'yeah or what I put the rope there for?'
Gadassi's sense of humor is as dry as an outback summer and his intense, almost limitless energy is analogous to the explosives he uses to mine.
(The shaft on that one was 100 feet deep)
He also classed the occasional bit of opal for us and all the while generously imparted his almost limitless knowledge and understanding of all things related to opal.
You could not have had a better guide and mentor during your stay in Coober Pedy than Gadassi, he is a bit of a local legend among people who know gem quality in men when they encounter it.
(He wasn't joking about the ladies either and I assure you it is a subject he takes seriously indeed.)
If he is your friend, be certain that it is for life.
Woah! Thanks for that amazing insight!
OMG I love that... "Can you still do it?" ... "If not, what the f the rope for?!?" lol. so awesome.
Tunnels *NOT* shafts! LOL
Mexie Mex tunnels are horizontal and shafts are vertical
FINN ROBY Yes, that's why it was funny ;^/
Nice 777 sucks I have to ruin it
Hole is just a shaft sideways.
Its actually a Hole... not a tunnel or a shaft..
This is perhaps my favourite smarter every day episode! Such a great adventure!
3 years later and I've now bought a gem cutting machine and I am saving up to take a trip to Australia to mine opals myself. Thank you
5:23 funniest part! George is hilarious. I want to go to Australia just to meet him lol!
Cool fact: The biggest opal found in Australia was in 1956 and it was 17,000 carats. In todays money it could have been worth up to $250,000,000
That is crazy!!
Hope Georgie finds the next one!
I loved it when you cut to your wife trying on the earrings! That killed me!
"but there's also horizontal shafts right?"
"that's called a tunnel."
**Horizontal, but yes, I loved that quote.
Particularly because as an engineer, I'm constantly correcting people calling columns [vertical members] as beams [horizontal members] and vice versa.
Horizontal
Zorihontal
I think in experiences like these, the people you meet are more valuable than the journey itself.
why doesnt this comment have 20k likes
9:05 I love the way how Destin just says this is dumb
We use The Great Courses in our homeschooling. The courses I've seen are very well put together.
I greatly enjoyed the Medieval History courses. (Early, High, and Late are each a different course)
I use it for homeschooling too. I enjoyed "Understanding Modern Electronics", and I've watched "Chemistry, 2nd Edition" and liked it. I love Great Courses plus because it's a lot easier than ordering DVDs and also its easier to watch on smart TVs.
+OJ The Aviator, +Wordsnwood (Art Mulder)
How much detail do they dive into?
I love how outrageously positive Destin is about everything
that guy has been mining gems so long he became one haha top bloke
"Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?"
"Many times!"
I learned that lesson.
I'm sort of curious if The Great Courses is still relevant as a paid service. I don't doubt the quality of their content, but with the amount of free University level courses there are from places like MIT open courseware and Coursera, I'm just wondering if the value of their service makes it worthwhile over the free content.
"I am your friend I could be your grandpa but I am ur friend" that guy is funny
Destin: “Diamond, sapphire, or ruby... are just a colored rock.”
Me: a geologist no
"You're crazy!" Says the man who regularly blows stuff up... XD
Watch outback opal hunters, gorge is in the show, he's legit crazy lol. He's one of the outbacks few dynamite miners.
i know i'm around 4 years late but georgie is one of the coolest people ever. hope he's still around today doing whatever makes him happy
Yep, still about. An Aussie show called "Opal hunters" follows him and a few others across Australia now.
Here in Australia, we fear change.
Why fix what isn't broken.
Robb Hays beidermeinhof iirc
Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon
Its call being aware...
That's a pretty disturbing name for anybody who knows who Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof actually were and what deplorable acts they committed alongside their fellow terrorists...
It's called Synchronicity. The 20th century Swiss psychiatrist and psychologist Carl Jung elaborated on it a lot.

George Cubitt i thought he said WHY WOULD THE ROPE BE THERE IF I COULDNT USE IT BUT FCKING CORRECT ME IF IM W O N G
@Milostar123 was indeed the funniest part :)
My god that old man is full of life and happiness it brought a smile to my face the entire time

I also love Opal!!! That is my favorite gem alongside Alexandrite. The way she looks, and her bow, and her light arrows, wait, are we talking about the same thing?
JJ Random citrine is my 2nd favorite right behind amethyst and ruby yeah their tied idc also thanks for making my day

YYYYAASSSS STEVEN UNIVERSE
btw to add a little more basic knowledge, once you "peg" a claim, you have 10 days to lodge an application with the department of mines and petroleum, other wise someone else can steal your claim by re-pegging it and lodging their application :D
😂
Just found Smarter Every Day. You mined for opal and found treasure. I found out Great Courses is online and offers a month free through Great. Courses Plus. Learning is my treasure. Thank you!
"Why I put the rope for?" Best answer ever. :)
i toured this few years back, was 55 celsius in Summer with flies everywhere. as soon as you even go a few meters into a tunnel the flies bugger off and the temp drops. you can even camp under ground . the place is crazy. the hotel pool was so hot it was like a bath. not a single person stayed in pool they would simply dip into water for literally seconds then get out to let the breeze do its thing. Its not a exaggeration to consider this place Mars like
thats why they live underground, temp drops no matter what temp above ground, broken hill had to temporarily put hospital patients in one of their silver/lead/zinc mines because of a massive heatwave
That old man genuinely looks like an amazing human being.. I love people like that man
