    Water lettuce could be a floating plant for the tub, the turtles I have kept have always enjoyed it. Anubias and java fern are two plants you could try, they can stick to structures and don't need substrate. You could also try anacharis/elodea, turtles love it.

    I have two turtles, RES and YBS. I had this same problem with them not eating their plants. You have to deprive them of food for a few days, just a few, and then reintroduce greens into their diet until they eat. Then they become accustomed to the greens and will eat it more often. I also noticed they tend to LOVE the anacharis live plant.

    Valisnaria. I grow it in my tank. The turtles nibble on it. Swim in it. Hide in it. They like it. You can put it in little pots if you don’t want to add substrate. However here’s a pro-tip:
    Put eggcrate / light diffuser over the pot and plant the Val’s through the opening. It will protect it so it can get established. Once established it is hard for turtles to uproot.
    Also, float whole leafs of romaine lettuce in his tank. Replace it every day or two (its cheap).
    Eventually, if he’s hungry enough, he’ll eat it.
    Nice sparkly tanks by the way. Great job.

    as I was watching this I was hoping you'd pick the black plastic stock tanks. Galvinized stock tanks are kinda considered unsafe for aquatic critters. When I had turtles I legit bought that EXACT country line stock tank; and then I returned it because I learned the metal leaks Zinc making the water toxic. Look into it; So I just decided to return it and buy a 110gallon Plastic black stock tank. You may be able to seal the steel with some sort of coating however.

    • @oo63pies00
      @oo63pies00 6 лет назад +4

      also the turtle bangs on the metal, but suction cups dont stick the plastic one. but
      the plastic one is way better. although it looks trashier.

    Nice tub! From experience- if you want to get rid of the shell rot fast and for good, get him a bigger, more stable basking platform, maybe one built out of pvc pipe or other waterproof materials. Or maybe wait for the new pond version of that platform you have to come out. It’s much bigger and better suited for such a big turt. Also, in the short-to-medium term, you’ll want to drydock him for a few hours each day. Put him in an empty large Tupperware tub and put a lamp in the corner and just let him chill for a few hours each day and let his shell really dry out. That’ll kill the bacteria that are reproducing on his shell and eating it. Do it for a few weeks and he should be great. Keep up the great videos!

    "And then they go 'weeeee' " 😂😂 I loved that part
    Edit: I got the black tub for my frogs as a kid. I was a horrible owner cuz I was 5 and my family didn't know what they were doing but I would catch tadpoles at the lake and bring them home to raise I had like 80-100 and they one day all hopped away. There was a frog outbreak in my neighborhood and know one could figure out why. Lol except for me n my family.

    Maybe build a wrap out of wood and stain it? Like... enclose the tub in a box of wood that is the max height of the tub. You could also like.. put a canister filter and put the input to the filter rather low and not as much duckweed would get sucked in? If ya get me? If not then I could probably explain further thru instagram if you want...

    I think you should order some neat stickers and just cover the whole tub in stickers. That, or get someone to paint it to look like his natural environment. As for plants, hornwort grows like crazy for me and I think would be a good choice. It would be neat to see some sort of lilly in the tub and some plants that stick out of the top. Some taro plants are good with low light it seems.

    Float frogbit / duckweed in the pond. The UK has a great site that shows safe plants.
    If you use plastic "needlepoint fabric" you can create a submerged filtration system, and run a tube up to the filter intake.
    Put plants on top of the submerged filtration system.

  • @moons_galaxy

    Put some substrate in it for the plants to be able to hold onto. As for the shiny metal tub, get some water resistant contact paper. They come in all kinds of designs and prints I’m sure you would find one you like. As for the basking spot you can make one using plexiglass and silicone, silicone some gravel for him to get traction on it, you can also add plant holders in it for live non aquatic plants.

    Turtle jello really works. Unflavored gelatin with red leaf lettuce and other good stuff like squash and sweet potato ribbons flavored with a can of tuna. I freeze the cubes and they last for months. After abt a year my turtle would eat any red leaf lettuce but she prefers the tender baby spring mix red leafs. She'll eat other lettuce too now but not happily. But she refused to eat her veggies for years and now she does so it's worth it.

    One of my peeves is a dirty tank, even water spots all over the glass....I get mad at Frankie if he leaves his marks on the glass (that is also my turtles name so weird) but he knows cuz he watches me clean it he is mesmerized by it and gets in my way on purpose I love that little guy!!!! The way he looks at me every time I stand over his turtle tank to talk to him lol he was inherited from my brother who neglected his tank massively and I have become to love him!!!!

    Wow, this is pretty good. My daughter left me a red eared many years ago. Oddly enough, she named it Franklin too. But, that didn't last as he..er...she has been laying eggs for years. I have her in a tank that has always been too small. I was just looking at the plastic livestock tanks, but seeing your metal one, I may change it. Could use PVC for a platform either in the middle or at one end. Thanks for posting this, Think I will give this a try. Sick of cleaning the small tank. Thanks.

    Part II: So before winter I have to figure out an indoor setup. This looks great. I am taking notes. Another thing... Trigger will not eat veggies unless baked inside turkey meatballs. 😁 She loves protein. So can you make a list of everything you used? Where did you purchase the tub may I ask? What kind of cannister filter do you use. It looks like your basking area is partially wet? Should it be completely dry? Is the tub easy to scrub clean? I bought some (recommended) special white grid plastic sheets (used for lighting) at Home Depot for the platform. It works great but is brittle and easily breaks.

    Part I: This is great!!! I was given a 5-year- old (approx.) red-eared female slider who was found in California crossing a road in 107°. I know right. Right now i have her in my fenced in front yard in a kiddie pool with a ramp and basking area. So far so good. I am having to learn fast about aquatic turtles. She stays close to the water but loves to bask. It is the perfect set up for summer only. I dump the water 2-3 times a day.

      Sara Beara I actually got mine at a reptile expo last October. It was the very last anery kenyan so I bought it fast. It's smarter to go to reptile expos so you can hand pick the animal you want and then you'll know if it's healthy, the size etc. I once ordered my blue tongue skink online and received a skink with a respiratory infection. I've healed him now but it took so long and I'm pretty pissed with that seller. It's a gamble if you buy online but it is a lot of fun to get animals in the mail I'll be honest.

    I recommend a canister filter, I know they are expensive but you can diy one or buy one second hand, I have 3 turtles in a 55 gallon ( the turtles are small , in the summer they will get each their own tank) but the canister keeps the water crystal clear , I have to change 25% of water in 1/2 weeks, depends on how much they poop, also you can do with eggcrate those above the tank basking areas

    I recently upgraded my two 12 year old red eared sliders to a 100 gallon black tub. About half full of water with some blocks for their basking area. They were about the size of a quarter when I got them and they went from a 10 gallon tank to a 20 gallon tank, then to a 40 breeder which they have been in for years. They were getting a bit cramped and the 100 tub is a lot roomier. But it took a couple of weeks for them to get used to me suddenly appearing over the top of them instead of being able to watch me coming.

    Try some thinly sliced sweet potato, carrot and yellow squash (like silver dollar or quarter sized), it should float and maybe the bright colors will entice him. You can "tough love it" and stop feeding his normal food for a while, he should eventually eat the veggies, including greens, you offer. Cool stock tank pond!

    Hornwort and Elodea are some nice plants that are cheap and easy to grow under the light conditions for turtles. Duckweed is really good too, my turtle are a whole ounce or so that I put in there. If you get a canister filter, which is good for that tank size, most of it shouldn't get sucked in it if you put the input and output at the right places

  • @CucumbersSC
    @CucumbersSC 5 лет назад

    Edit: oops, forgot when the video was posted! Sorry, you probably have all the advice you need already. I thought I remembered something about getting him duckweed!
    There are bigger floaters than duckweed that you could try, like red root floater or dwarf water lettuce! They will help keep your water good and since it's a turtle it's not a big problem that they lower the oxygen level a bit. Water lettuce will also provide hiding places in it's big roots, and is easy to keep in one place since it keeps it's baby plants attached. If you are looking for something very easy then guppy grass is a good choice, it's fast growing and has very low requirements for light etc, and you can just toss it in loose, plant it in a pot of gravel or tie it to something. Since I only keep inverts that don't eat live plants I sadly have no idea if any of these plants are toxic or extra healthy. But I look forward to seeing Franklin's new home get all green and cozy!
    And I have a zillion things I would do to spice up the look of that tub if it was mine, but IDK which would work for you! Maybe some vinyl decals? Window film? See if someone would like to paint something on it, who lives close enough to you?

    Mine: WillieEarl & BuelaMae are still hatchlings. I have been giving considerable thought to giving mine a "Turtle Tub" I too live on the 2nd floor in a building that has been here for 88 years.
    Question: Where can you go to find turtle tubs? I live in NYC.

    My girls (red eared sliders) love duckweed, it doesn't seem to cause any problems with the filter, and water lettuce. I have to grow them in a different tank though because they eat it all.

    I have no idea if it would be safe incase Franklin were to eat it, but I think some pothos would be nice. It grows well in water and would creep over the walls of the tub creating a noice aesthetic

    I'd personally add a bunch of aquarium substrate, held down by a thin layer of pebbles to hold it down. the substrate should be light enough to not worry too much about weight issues and also displace some water for height.
    Plant longer aquarium plants that have root systems to hold on to the substrate.
    hairgrass, hornwort, small lilies, maybe some water lettuce for a floater that shouldn't get too caught up. Think that would make for a very happy Franklin, and maybe he could sample some of the salad on offer.

    get a hula hoop type circle that will float and contain floating plants in the circle. They will usually eat frogbit, pennywort, duckweed. My turtles will eat the spirulina discs that are made for plecos. I love that tank, I been looking at them myself. I have 2 of the black ones outside with goldfish in them, 100 gal and 120 gal. I want the 8 ft galvanized one. Anyways, good job and I'm sure Franklin is loving it.

    Is that galvanise steel because galvanise steel contains zinc so it could poison the water

    • @cu-2993
      @cu-2993 6 лет назад +3

      I looked it up and that is galvanise steel it will poison the water with toxic zinc

      Also galvanise have a thin layer of industrial oil as a second rust preventing layer on the steel

    Turtles have a super heavy bio load. It's better to have a filter thats like 2-3x the amount of gallons of water you have. So like a 55 gallon tank would need at least an 110 gallon filter even if you only fill the tank half way.

    water hyacinth and anacharis are great plants for turtles to eat! theres also a trick for keeping floating plants in one area where you can float some clear tubing in a ring and have the plants inside. never seen it with a turtle tank though, so im not sure how it would work since they pretty much destroy everything, but it could be worth a try! (also, unrelated but id love to see some little fish buddies in his tank since there is plenty of room now)

    If you do use duckweed, there's this little floating rim some aquascapers use to prevent the duckweed from blocking the light. Idk what it's called but maybe you could use it to keep like a contained patch of duckweed?

    Attach a fine mesh cube around the base of the filter so water can pass through (no bottom on it just around the filters body and flow) and that way duckweed or other floating plants can't get stuck in the filter. Just an idea, not sure how it would turn out in the long run.

    If you want him to be able to see out of it just cut out a piece of the side and put in a piece of acrylic. Also you may want to seal the inside with pond sealant, apparently these galvanised tubs can leak zinc into the water and make it toxic, it would also stop him from making too much noise against the metal with his claws

    Put a fish tank on its side across the tub. Then lead up from the tub to the fish tank. That way he can see you and he can chill for a bit.

    You can tie plants onto logs that they sell at the fish store. I zip tie my live plants into logs for my fish all the time and one they have grown roots around the log and seem secure I cut the zip tie off

    Which floating basking platform are u using?

  • @jackp9589
    @jackp9589 6 лет назад +3

    Those zoo med basking logs are known to cause shell rot since they don’t offer a place for him to be completely dry due to it sinking from his weight

      You should look into this (oasis turtle ramp). It’s what I use, it’s super sturdy and easy to climb up even if the water evaporates. You can find it not from amazon a lot cheaper and it would stick to metal well. It’s much bigger than you would expect too

      You can make a turtle ramp cheap with PVC and plastic sheets like what you already had

  • @sundayf.298

    You could get some contact paper and stick it onto the metal. Or, you could spray paint, that would be cheaper, but you can get all kinds of contact paper like wood or marble.

    that would also be a bad ass tube to do an all natural set up with drift wood and lillys

  • @oliviamalerich462
    @oliviamalerich462 6 лет назад

    If you built a DIY filter (which would be the cheapest option for his new tub) you could make the intake lower in the water so you wouldn’t have to deal with duckweed getting stuck in the filter.

    Have you tried to feed him red leaf lettuce like radicchio? My sliders only eat the red leaf lettuce and sometimes romaine
