Dodgeball is one of my favourite films, in my opinion I’m happy they didn’t use the alternate sad ending where Globo Gym won the Dodgeball Tournament and Average Joe were the sore losers. Average Joe’s are meant to be the heroes of the film and it would’ve been unfair to see them lose after all they fought for in trying to save their beloved gym from foreclosure against Globo Gym as White Goodman was such a greedy, selfish, cocky and arrogant jerk who’d do anything to stop them.
My god! THANK YOU! When I first watched the "Alternate ending" with director commentary, i thought it was a gag. A really funny one at that. But then all these videos and websites talked about it like it was legitimate and I was baffled.
I just realized it, you what is funny is that what Peter did in the film ending betting on his team to win is an action ban by many sporting leagues. While not illegal by State or Ferderal law, the Dodgeball leagues often ban you from betting even your own team. Peter would lose the match on this alone.
The alternate ending of Clerks was depressing...like REALLY depressing. I remember seeing it on Siskel and Ebert and the movie being completely ruined by it.
i wonder what would have happened if he kept the old ending. it comes out of nowhere and adds to the bleak meaninglessness of dantes day. maybe smith makes more serious movies moving forward instead of feel good sarcastic slacker stoner comedies. chasing amy and jersey girl still have snap and wit and funny moments and a pinch of jay and silent bob but they show a road forward in well written dramas if those didnt bomb. could be critically acclaimed in the same breath as linklater tarantino amd the coen bros. but then he backed away mostly from ambition leaned into “what the people want” got high on his own supply literally got lazy rested on his laurels and aside from a few interesting oddities in red state and tusk has been playing the hits ever since. maybe if he cuts out all the weed some ambition can creep back in and he can deliver something great again. unfortunately his primary financiers for years were the weinsteins so hes going to have to convince someone else to give him a real budget again. the last two got made and every penny they could find in the couch cushions wound up on screen but you can still see the limitations.
It's funny to me that while the happy ending seems particularly contrived, it actually makes the original ending more grim. *Peter bet his saving and lost. A loss that he can never hope to bounce back from. His life ruined by dodgeball.*
Would of worked with the "grim" ending if instead of him betting on winning, he bet on losing knowing he was representing AverageJoes against comically elite meatheads. The test audience theory made me remember that Robert De Niro movie where he plays a producer that has to work with an out of control director. De Niro's character is pressured by the studio to convince the director to change the ending of a movie in which a dog is shot and killed. Not "old Yeller" style either. That movie just had the dog die off screen. In this movie the director wanted to show the dog getting shot directly in the head. Like in full view. No cut aways or anything. The producer and director spend the entire movie going back and forth about the ending. When it comes time to show it to the audience De Niro thinks the director did a reshoot and fixed it. At the last minute the original ending is shown and the audience is horrified by what they see. By the end of the movie De Niro's character is left at the airport and presumably fired by the studio for not handling the director better.

The alternate (original) ending was too abrupt and incomplete, not to mention a cop-out. The actual ending allowed for sudden death, which offered a far more satisfying closure. However, a couple of things didn't make sense... 1. If White stepped over the line before hitting Peter, he's out. Game over. The ref should have called that immediately, seeing as he had no problem making a similar call earlier in the tournament. An improved alternate ending would have Peter not losing focus after eliminating Me'Shell, which was incomprehensible at that point in the tornament. 2. (Covered in commentary) How did Peter possibly have time to bet against Globodyne oops Globo-Gym, considering he originally planned to skip the final? He was at the airport already, for the love of Mike. I would suggest that he bought off the judges to evade disqualification, except only Gordon knew the by-law!
An elaborate bit of trolling by the producers director and stars to get more attention from viewers and fans , so as to boost the sales of the DVD after the film was released.
I’m glad to find It was just a gag! One thing I can’t stand is alternate endings in movies. It’s like, “then they persevered, wept tears, overcame and bled to win the tournament…. Or they lost.”
I just never understood why Peter decided not to show up, then at the last minute after they cancelled the match due to lack of players, he then showed up and we find out he bet all his money on Average Joes to win, when originally he thought they had no chance.
There was also an alternative version of when white Goodman gets the warning when he has to kneel in the ‘triangle of shame’ and the crowd throws shit at him. Wish that was kept in.
I absolutely love this movie. Along with Tropic Thunder, it's my favorite comedy movie. I watch it fairly regularly and no matter how many times I've seen it, I still get plenty of laughs. I was unaware of some of these DVD extras, as we did have the DVD and I went through them, but I dont think I watched the commentary so I missed on that absolute gold mine of comedy. Great concept for a commentary and really adds to this already hilarious film.
Tropic thunder can go fuck itself using the pathetic r word countless times it's a form of hate speech and should be banned and doesn't help people with developmental disabilities Ben is a pos for using this hurtful word, setting us back 20 years as a society
Ted Lasso did the subversion of the “underdog storybook ending” the best-albeit as a sports comedy, it’s quite a different tone from Dodgeball. But the S1 finale basically ripped off Rocky only as a foreshadow of the series finale in Season 3, where they’ve set up a context where the ethos about it not mattering whether a team wins or loses is firmly established, and the fact that they didn’t win the league like they set out to is an afterthought. How could this have informed the ending of Dodgeball? Well, if Vince Vaughn’s character had leveraged the payout by some other means (perhaps even by betting against the Average Joe’s). However it ensues or explained from there, it’s a fertile ground for the antics of Ben Stiller’s character to be in a situation where he’s won the silly little dodgeball tournament, but he’s losing his gym and everything that matters beyond the day’s events, and vice versa for the Average Joe’s
Thank you thank you thank you. I did not know this about the movie. I do love the movie and this made it so much cooler. I never bought much for DVDs in my life but I really wish I had bought this one just for this. Thank you so much.
The ending we got was better and I actually thought Joes did lose the first time I saw this in theaters but as soon as the ref blue the whistle I new the tables had turned because of White stepping over the line on the throw.
Honestly... I could believe this. The entire thing was clearly Bad News Bears from the beginning... and talk about movies that would never be made again...
I always wondered why Peter would put 100 grand on winning and barely show up in time not to forfeit. Doesn’t make much sense but them changing the ending last minute kind of adds up.
The alternate ending could have worked with a Hoosiers-styled ending. Panning to a guy playing basketball while they play Stiller's lines, then someone hits the player in the head with a ball from offscreen. Maybe it's just me?
I wish they used the alternate ending for Global Gym to win, but Peter bet against his team on losing, and sponsors loved Average Joe's team and they got more money.
You guys know earlier scenes in a movie can be added in after the ending, right? as in if they needed to increase the movie length, and change the ending in the process, they can add more scenes to set up a new ending
Oh come on! They could bring back every single extra in the crowd, put every single one in exactly the same clothes with the same wristwatches, bracelets, earrings, necklaces and on and on and on and... Clearly done at the time of filming, not a re-shoot.
Pretty much every DVD commentary Ive watched with Will Ferrell has been him doing a long bit and everything becomes a clusterfuck. It's less of a commentary and more of just 2 hours of improv comedy

Maybe among film geeks, but this isnt meant to be a thought provoking Sundance film. They did the right thing with the final cut. Sometimes you have to know your audience, not make the audience to suit your purpose.
I honestly don't even care of it was the original or not. "At Globo Gym we're better than you and we know it." OMG is this where MJF got his catchphrase from? LOL
I mean he would have been around 8 when the movie came out, being a few years older I remember that this movie was *very* popular. So it's plausible
"Have fun in Nerdville!" 😢Don't mind if I do.
“the movie was a massive hit and quickly made its way to DVD” sounds hilarious to me
I wouldn't have rewatched it so many times if it had the original ending I think. So I think they made a good decision, at least IMO
Insightful! I absolutely love this revelation!
Thanks for letting us know.
It Rian Johnson wrote and directed this, I would've believed the "original ending" was the one intended.
When I first watched the "alternate ending" I was absolutely howling. It was obviously a gag.
That was from the actual ending. The alternative ending branches off after that moment without the sudden death.
Great video.
Great now I have to drive back to my childhood home to find my dvd copy and look for those Easter eggs 🙄😏
The director's first film???!!! He made a comedic masterpiece
I had seen the alt ending on Comedy Central years after seeing it on pay per view. It tripped me out
I got a Planet Fitness ad in the middle of the video 😅
I always wondered why Peter would put 100 grand on winning and barely show up in time not to forfeit. Doesn’t make much sense but them changing the ending last minute kind of adds up.
So in other words, the DVD had the same ending but if you wanted to see the alternate ending you had to click through some stuff.
What's depressing about Dodgeball was not how it ended, but that it was given the green light in the first place.
Agreed I wish I had less joy in my life
It would been fun to have the movie to cut to the ending a couple seconds to have that interrupted for the judge and resuming the movie.
I've always loved that they chose someone as skinny as Ben Stiller to play a body builder.
Oh come on! They could bring back every single extra in the crowd, put every single one in exactly the same clothes with the same wristwatches, bracelets, earrings, necklaces and on and on and on and...
Clearly done at the time of filming, not a re-shoot.
And they took dodgeball out of most schools like 3 years after this movie came out. Now they use those foam balls that barely pick up speed
I actually watched it, great thing about being at a cabin with limited movies to watch
Dude. Stiller and Vaughn are method comedians. Damn right they would stick to the funny plan.
Pretty much every DVD commentary Ive watched with Will Ferrell has been him doing a long bit and everything becomes a clusterfuck. It's less of a commentary and more of just 2 hours of improv comedy
The ending you never saw, if you never explored the special features on DVD.
Some of those people Like replaced upstanding people. Doctors, Lawyers, Scientist, Congress men. Then didn't get high as much or stayed high. Have done way worse. I remember what normal was what Average was still after staying high all those years. And you sir are not normal. 👺
I'm here though High cholesterol Close to having Diabetes. It's common when you stay high.
Love this movie!
NOBODY MAKES ME BLEED MY OWN BLOOD
I’m glad they changed the ending even if Vince and Ben didn’t like it. Give the people what they want.
Definitely. I'm counting my blessings that the alternate ending never happened in the theatrical cut because that ending would have sucked worse than anything in human existence and would have ruined my childhood
Heroes pervail is the ending most people come to expect and one as old as time. While it subverting expectations, I don't think this goofball comedy would have been held in the same regard today. Maybe among film geeks, but this isnt meant to be a thought provoking Sundance film. They did the right thing with the final cut. Sometimes you have to know your audience, not make the audience to suit your purpose.
Dodgeball is one of my favorite comedies, I’m so shocked I never knew about this ending!
I honestly don't even care of it was the original or not. But it would've been a hell of a subversion of underdog sports movie-- and ballsy-- to release a movie where the underdogs lose and that's it. I find that hilarious just because that's the most subversive thing you can do in an underdog movie
The good old commentary
I will never not picture Ben Stiller's character when I hear the song "Milkshake"...lmfao!!!
i never knew it was the directors first film. damn, off to a great start.
I just realized their uniforms are the same as the hickory basketball teams
How anyone believed this is beyond me.
For a start, it wouldn’t immediately fade to end credits immediately after the apparent winning point. 🙄
If the original ending was that downer ending, good thing the producers pressured the director to do the theatrical ending instead. :)
This movie, like Team America, was funny as all hell the first time i saw it. The next few times I saw it years later, it just didnt hit the same.
Gonna have to pick it up next time at the flea market.
