The saddest episode of Superman was when Darkseid killed the cop. "The world didn't need a Superman, just a brave one."
Omg!!! I 4got about that episode!!! That was sad
Dan Turpin. That episode was a tribute to Jack Kirby. 😢
Seeing that as a kid in the late 90s early 2000ths was so shocking. They just straight up showed someone being murdered on an animated show intended mostly for children and it wasn't censored and he was truly dead and they never brought him back. The DCAU was hardcore.
Jack Kirby
Yes this cartoon handled death and other serious themes more than the live action films ever could
I feel like the DCAU really helped cement Wally West as the Flash & made him more popular outside of the comics. Other examples include Hawkgirl, John Stewart as the Green Lantern, & of course, Mr. Freeze. It says something when Barry Allen has to take some of Wally's traits in some adaptations.
That’s my evidence right there that Wally is the best Flash. Everything that is popular about Flash as an overall mythos started with Wally. Even some of Wally’s personality traits, storylines, and love interests are given to Barry and everything is retroactively made to revolve around Barry while Wally often times got shafted. It’s so annoying
The funny thing is that they wanted to use Barry but because at the time Barry was dead in the comics, DC didn't let them use Barry so they used Wally. That's why Wally in the DCAU has the same backstory as Barry in the comics.
@@Ren_Davis0531but at least they stayed faithful to the comics
This and the Richard Donner movies are the best adaptations of Superman
💯💯💯
I don't forget Superman and Lois as well
The Fleisher Shorts enter the chat: Am I a joke?
Smallville, Lois and Clark, and don’t forget the old Fleisher cartoons.
Don't forget about Superman vs the Elite
Oh man I’m officially old enough that cartoons I watched when they were new are now retro

This version of Superman is my favorite version because he felt believable. His villains actually felt like they might beat him(showing the threat level of these villains), an actual challenge for him to overcome. Christopher Reeves&the super friends may have introduced me to Supes, but this show made me love&appreciate Superman.
Yes!it's so great to come across somebody else who gets it.
Agreed also he was so dimensional he was not just Superman he was Clark Kent in this. He could get angry but still maintain his heroic qualities.
Gunn said he’ll use the DCAU as one of the blueprints for the DCU. Fun fact Miguel Ferrer voices the weather wizard, he also played him in the unaired Justice League pilot.
Unironically, Superman: The Animated Series handled both Lex Luthor and Batman's first meeting with Superman more maturely than Hollywood has done in live action since. At the risk of angering a former movie reviewing robot buddy of Korey's, that includes Smallville.
DCAU Superman is the best adaptation of the character outside comics bar none
It honed in on the fundamentals and respected the archetype of the character without feeling the need to either oversimplify him to the point of being a basic Boy Scout, or subverting it to the point where it he was unrecognizable to the source material for the sake of being different, and he still meshed tonally with the other characters the shows would eventually introduce. He also gets bonus points for the show delving way deeper into Superman's rogues gallery and spotlighting characters like Metallo, Mr. Mxyzptik and Parasite, which the movies just never did beyond either Lex or Zod
I was a huge Flash fan as a kid, due to the live-action series airing when I was little and the Mark Waid comics. When this episode aired, I recorded it and watched about 50 times.
I used to record episodes I loved on VHS and rewatch them all the time too!
@@JonCom3dygood times
This series, along with Batman, were my favorites as a kid
Stop everything to watch smh
I was a little later so I grew up with Justice League and Teen Tians
Michael Rosenbaum is the best Flash and the best live action Luthor.
Xmen was way better
@@thegreygoblin5165 Me too!
This was the first appearance of the Flash, in the DCAU. But, the most impressive display of his capabilities is in the S2 finale JLU. That’s where he takes down the Lex Luther/Braniac hybrid by running around the globe, dozens of times, within a few seconds. And, with each lap he infinite mass punches Braniac upside the head. Between the animation, the way it’s shot, the voice acting and the music, it’s a jaw dropping scene.
Yes that was such an epic moment. Made even more intense where he almost got stuck in the speed force and his friends had to pull him out
That episode was epic and that day I became a fan of the flash
Y’all made this episode infinitely funnier 😂
Fun Fact: The music used in Flash's entrance was the Danny Elfman theme from the 1990 Flash TV series.
The Fleicher shorts were my first introduction to Superman. Didn’t have cable for a bit growing up, so my Mom bought some dvds of some old cartoons from her time. I used to love those shorts so much I would act them out. Had a Superman Returns outfit that I would put on whenever Clark would change into Superman. Now as an adult, I watch these shorts and I’m surprised just how fluid these animations look for coming out in the 40s. These shorts are better animated than a lot of modern day cartoons.

Man the SPEED DEMON episode was my favorite episode of the Superman cartoon. I love how cocky the Flash was, just came in talking mess and never let up that he was better than you 😂.
They showed his powers, abilities and that he wasn't jus speed but much more
An episode of Superman:TAS that definitely needs a DT retro toon review is "the late Mr.Kent",it involves supes using his skills as a reporter to clear the name of a man on death row and find out who tried to kill him as Clark, great episode. "Mxyzpixilated" would be 1 Korey would have fun with, especially Gilbert Gottfried as the villain
The Late Mr. Kent was probably the best episode. That ending was so perfect.
@@BraxtonWages "Clark Kent, He's Superma....(gas chamber activates)". 100% that ending was perfect.
Incredible episode!
The Flash was on Lois like
HEY WOMAN! HEY WOMAN!
Since Superman ain't got no heart how about you come up to my apartment and I'll show you what a real superhero looks like
I'll accept his invitation
Best way to prepare for “My adventures with superman” is to look back on the Brue Timm and Alan Burnett superman cartoon.
I miss when Wally West was the Flash and acted like a cocky goofball.
Damn we need Korey and the crew to review Justice LEAUGE the Flashpoint Paradox. The animated film was better than the film we got this week.
Zack Snyder watched this and said “nahh”.
Someone gotta tell Chris calling people on the spectrum or with mental disabilities a spaz is extremely derogatory, before people on Twitter and reddit find out 😂
Carl Lumley section is killing me.. @13:30 Both of them kept pointing out the wrong black guy. 😂😂😂 I damn near choked laughing so hard. "let's jus say that's him"
First beast wars now this episode of Superman animated series?! No lie you guys are hitting the nostalgia hard. This was one of my favorite episodes of the show. Just seeing these guys running across the water was so epic and still looks cool to this day. The dcau had some bangers
This show is actually darker than Man of Steel, but he starts the series with the classic Superman hope and optimism but gradually gets darker and evolves. IT'S EARNED!!!!!! Unlike the Snyderverse.
I remember this series actually featured characters getting killed quite a bit; one even died in the gas chamber!
Man of Steel was awesome !! my favorite Superman film-EASILY.
I remember watching this episode and didn't realize it was the flashes debut. Also 100 times around the earth at the speed of light would only be 13-14 secs
Tim Daly was my favorite modern superman voice..OG DCAU voice
Me too
Such a great throwback to the old comics
I recently bought most of the DCAU with Batman the Animated Series,Superman the Animated Series,Justice League and JL Unlimited, and Although its not connected in any way i always considered Young Justice to be the only Animated series of its era to truly match the Quality of the Predecessors before it when it came to tackling Teen Superheroes that no other show really was able to match despite the quality of Seasons 3/4 being debatable among fans.
Nothing has equaled World's Finest and the first On Screen Animated pairing of Superman and Batman and how they discover each other's identities and eventually become allies and friends.
With Kevin Conroy's passing i wouldn't mind this universe never being touched except in maybe comics.
I havent even finished watching BTAS and im eager to start Superman and Justice League.
I believe young justice is only conected to the green lantern animated series trough a specific character that apeared in the latest season of young justice
Yo I loved Justice League and Justice league unlimited growing up, probably the reason I was so critical when the live action movie dropped. Also Static Shock was a pretty good teen hero show too, with cameos from Bats, Supes, and Justice League 😄
@@joshbrosh6626 There's also a surprising connection with Justice League Action. A certain A.I. from Green Lantern: TAS makes an appearance in the JLA episode "Barehanded". Maybe there's some multiverse shenanigans going on.
Batman,Superman,JL & JL Unlimited were my favs when they came out.Just good old fashioned super-hero action and drama. What more could you ask for ??? And I have to tip my hat off to; THE-BATMAN-a new bat series that followed Batman: TAS that was-GREAT.The animation alone was better than Batman: TAS.
@@i.m.evilhomer5084 the way they went with time shenanigans in the last season and the dimension stuff
And the darkseid setup troughout the whole show i wouldnt ve suprised its multiverse shenanigans since darkseid is an multiversal willain
Remember that Superman stumbled when he missed that high five, because he was going to high five Flash's arm off his body.
This was a great episode, but you guys should do a retro review on the Flashpoint paradox. Since the flash movie was based off of that book/special.
I bet Korey had a crush on Lois XD
To be fair...she WAS a baddie.
This version of the Flash is actually Wally West, Ezra's is Barry Allen so they're not even really the same character.
Yeah, but it's not like Barry Allen was that much like Ezra's take to begin with. And this version of Wally West actually has Barry's job. (He works as a forensic scientist)
@@hkr0065 I didn’t say he was… I’m just pointing out that the DCAU flash and Ezra’s Flash are two separate characters since Korey is comparing them like they’re the same…
Also in my experience with speedsters comes a bit of cockiness, The Flash, Sonic, Quicksilver, Swift heart rabbit, Dashiell Parr even Road Runner, are all smug and full of themselves. It comes with the territory of being untouchable (most of the time). 😁
In “World’s Finest”, Bruce proposes to Lois, she dumps him when she finds out that he is Batman. It’s not her fault that she’s cape-bait.
It has bothered me for years that they fucked up the coloring on Flash's head lightning bolt thing. One is more silver than the other and its just like that for the entire episode
Superman: The Animated Series was the greatest thing I ever watched from DC, I always love how they portrayed The flash love that version better than Ezra
Also let's not forget the amazing opening theme. 💯🎧
🤣 Better than Ezra!
Was that on purpose?
This and Batman: TAS are the best ways to tell their stories…they’re both animated
"he's the worlds fastest asshole!"
You guys discussing Ezras take on The Flash having assburgers was brilliant 😂
That series had some great lines, especially from characters like Braniac: "You are your father's son, Kal-El. Headstrong, foolish, easily defeated and ultimately forgotten."
My favorite version of The Flash.
This one was voiced by a young Michael Rosenbaum, who would go on to be Lex Luthor in "Smallville" and the voice of The Flash in Justice League Unlimited. Perfect combo of speed, humor, and charm.
And not a dick.
X-Men TAS, Gargoyles, Spider-Man TAS, Batman TAS, Superman TAS, MIB TAS, Batman beyond all great shows
My favorite episode was "THE LATE MR. KENT", Clark is a victim of an apparent murder and has to stay dead to reveal who the killer is. The ending was awesome.
That’s also my favorite episode too!!! Superman TAS is one of my favorite cartoons of all time, wish more people knew about it, it has the best version of Superman IMO.
Didn't mention that Flash's voice was Michael Rosenbaum, who played live action Lex Luthor in Smallville series.
I hope that Double Toasted eventually does a Retro Toon Review of "Static Shock". Korey would LOVE that show.
Great series and great episode.
Miguel Ferrer is great as Weather Wizard RIP
Agree about great episode and series,if you're a-SUPES-fan this is the series for you. When did Miguel Ferrer die ????
@@powerbadpowerbad About 5 or 6 years ago.
I loved him as Deathstroke he was also funny as him.
Carl Lumley was in Supergirl and he was the Martian Manhunter in OG Justice League
10:37 Clark is like, I'm going to side step and let Superman handle this race.😂
In Crisis On Infinite Earths, Barry didn't actually die. He went into the Marvel multiverse in Quasar #17 under the name Buried Alien. That's where he was that whole time until he returned to DC's multiverse years later.
This is the Flash I grew up watching, Wally West lovable D-bag who will flirt with anything in a skirt, but has a heart of gold. I hope they adapt this version for James Gunn DCU
There's an episode where Batman, Orion and Flash confront the Trickster in a bar. Orion wants to rough him up but Flash just has a chat with him. It ends with Flash telling him to turn himself in after he finishes his beer. The Trickster says something like , "you got me again Flash!" Michael Rosenbaum is the best Flash and the best live action Luthor.
Shirley Walker did compose some music for the show
fun fact: the actor miguel ferrer who plays weather Wizard also played the part of weatherman in a unaired justice league live action pilot. pilot episode on youtube I think.
The art style of the show was supposed to be a retro futuristic look, the term the crew working on STAS came up with was "Ocean Liner Deco"
I know its a minor thing, but, I never understood why they put a black circle around the Flash's symbol. Its supposed to be yellow or gold.
And...the Ezra Miller depiction of Flash was far removed from the real character. The comic book Flash was never socially awkward AFTER he got his powers. Before his powers, Barry Allen was clumsy, awkward, and late all the time. But his powers removed all of that.
10:50 No, they didn't get engaged. They were just dating. Her being a "ho" is stil accurate, though. 😂
Lois literally dated everyone else on the show except for Clark Kent himself lol
There are two great Flash episodes or at least moments that I remember from JL/JLU (for different reasons). One when he shows Green Lantern his creepy Flash Van. The other was the Flash Appreciation Day where Batman and whosname see him treat his mentally-ill supervillains really nicely.
Two diffrent Flashes. The one in the movie isplayed by Miller is Berry Allen while the Flash in the Animated series is Wally West
The origin story for this series was brilliantly refreshing! I remember the first two episodes premiering 8 PM on a Thursday night. Me and my firends were raving about it during lunch the following day.
There's a moment in another DC thing, it might be an episode from the DCAMU but Superman says something like "Flash, we've raced before and you never beat me by THAT much." and Flash deadpan says "Clark.. that was for charity."
We need M.I.B. The Animated Series next
Don't get them started on the aliens
Dancing in the line.
They'll crack up so hard.
😂
@@nehemiahpouncey3607 yeah my favorite opening of all time lol they need Billy for that one
I love the DCAU's Flash. He so cocky but goodhearted.
20:00 The dissatisfied, ominous spectator. 😆 😆 😆 Never gets old!
Unfortunately this show isn't talked about greatly because of Batman the animated series which ironically came back because of Superman.
I recently bought the blu ray of the complete series and man it still holds up years later. Possibly my favorite iteration of Superman.
One of my favorite animated shows growing up
I love the DCAU shows. Batman, Superman, Justice League, Batman Beyond and Static were all great. WB has hit the mark so many times in animation, but have struggled mightily with the live action movies.
I feel like Glen Powell (from Top Gun Maverick) would be the perfect actor to portray THIS version of the Flash
When they showed Flash running through the town in the movie reminds me of that last race at the end of the episode
Miguel Ferreira always played the most entertaining villains
Great Actor too I remember him in RoboCop..Rest in Power to him
Hoping my Adventures of Superman can live up to this.😊
Kory needs to watch the batman episode when he finds out Clark's identity.
They should have done the Justice League episode where Superman and Captain Marvel (Shazam) fought. I bet their take on it would have been hilarious.
Flash around the world multiple times at the finale of the Cadmus arc against brainiac in just a few seconds. Superman in the comics can be at the end of the universe and fly back to earth in like 1 minute.
A lot of people talk about there favourite versions of supes and the bat. For me nothing will ever touch the dcau, Tim Daly, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamil, forever ❤🙏 bless.
Don’t forget Clancy Brown as Lex
They should review the ep where Superman fights Livewire & Parasite and he has to wrap himself in a full body condom so her electricity don't harm him
The best Superman version in my book.
The only thing I disliked about this cartoon (and really the DCAU) is Supes power levels change almost every episode. Sometimes bullets and explosions lay him out, other times he walks right through them. Other than that, S:TAS was great. Not quite as good as B:TAS, but not far off either. Absolutely recommended.
And Clancey Brown as Lex? Best (vilan) casting this side as Mark Hamill
You should watch the Flashpoint Paradox. It's a much more faithful adaptation of the comic that the live action Flash movie is partly based on.
It does have problems. They try to cram way too much in an 80 minute movie, it really should have been two movies. But it's still pretty good. And you do have to keep in mind that it only had a budget of $3.5 million, which is about 1.5% the budget of the live action Flash movie.
This guy came back from vacation and went right back to work
If I'm not mistaken, This Flash is Wally West which makes sense.
You could've done the pilot of the 90's Flash tv show
This era was interesting since for me this was an inroduction to Wally West as the Flash who was side kick turned legacy who succeded Barry Allen. He was the Flash for I wanna say two decades after the former was killed off in the 80's.
I wish that a Batmanless Man or Steel 2 revealed that the Jor El hologram was secretly Braniac and it pushed Kal to fight Zod to gain his trust and take out the only other Kryptonian threat before manipulating Clark to conquer Earth for him. Use that to bring in Lex Luthor framed as Earth's savior from Kryptonians to set him up as the main villain in 3?
Weather wizard is a flash villian but this is his intro. His control of weather gets alot stronger as he advances his tech in later episodes.
Such an underrated superman show. It's the best one way better than smallville
Although I agree, don't shit on Smallville it's a close second 😅
@@latishabuckner8231 smallville is number 3 superman and lois is better
@@christophergarrett7082 I haven't watched Superman and Lois and I have very little interest in watching it, so for me, Smallville will always be 2nd best.
This is the best Superman. He is what a hero should be, a person who saves and someone you 100% trust. I don't trust none of these hero's now, especially Zack Snyder hero's.
A very good Superman story is the Justice League Unlimited "FOR THE MAN WHO HAS EVERYTHING" episode. And of course they are many others, but this one kind of blew my mind as a teen.
The animation for seasons 1 and 2 were the best. Season 3 and 4 the quality of the animation art went down some.
The villian that annoyed Superman the most, has to be Lobo.
RIP Miguel Ferrer! He voiced the Weather Wizard. 🙏🏿 this show was so dope! I couldn't stand Superman, but loved this show.
Did this change your view on Superman ?
@@robertrogers074 actually, "Man Of Steel" did. This show had great writing, but MoS made me see a more "human" side of Superman.
I hate how those cartoons were drawn. They have been doing this style for over 30 years. Maybe if the whole world was 5 years old I would find it appealing. But most of us aren't. If comics were all drawn like this we would have a hard time getting passed the simple sketches. And many of the cartoons are drawn this way today. Better artist, please. It's 2023. Let's go. Some of the greatest art we have seen come from the panels of a comic book. Great artist have made an impact on how we view these novels. Most of us picked a comic up for the first time, not for it's clever title but because of cover art. We deserve better when it comes to animation. All those talented artìst and we can't get a few to draw cartoons? The scripts are fine. Why can't the drawings meet that standard?
I think most studios who do animate choose to use a more simple or simplified artstyle due to time constraints or budget, but as someone who tried animation, simplifying your characters is better when you need do alot of animation frames fast. It's easier to copy and tweak the drawing this way. The more detailed/complex the artsyle used is, the more time it takes to draw these characters, things such as shading, color or background drawing to name a few are whole another thing. Also, I think no matter how talented the artists involved are, if the head of the animation team said that the artstyle would be this then you need to draw like that unfortunately. There's also a matter of how many animators that company has cause if it's small and they have a lot of project to do then simplifying is better or hiring a lot of freelancers is a way to go. Anime has some of the best animation and has a continous production of it, but it's known in the anime community that animators are overworked too much that sometimes seeing a great animation is praised with a sincere want for these animators to get a good rest for delivering such a great animation. There's also the artistic choices that the art director wants in the animation. Western animation or rather western cartoons seems to use the same artsyle due to how many shows are being produced. It could be a lack of animators, but I'm not well informed in that area. I mostly associate these style as western because it noticeable that it uses shapes easily, it's almost like a brand that if you see that artstyle then you know it's usually made by this part of the world cause of association.
Creating an animated series with the same level of detail as the comic books can be done I think, but it should be noted that it will take a lot of time. Arcane and Trigun both have 6 years of production, 2 years of that are probably for the animation part alone. Spiderverse and Puss n boots 2 are really great, but that's a movie. It's much more compact unlike a series. Quality issue is also there like, if they do use this artstyle, can it stay consistent throughout the whole run? This is an issue especially for animated shows that are continous (like boruto which thankfully is now doing a seasonal schedule rather than weekly). But I think the main reason is probably the mindset of "if it works then don't fix it" in a way, like almost doing the bare minimun where as long as the action is animated clearly and understandable then it's good/enough, likr why waste more time and talent for those minor/more details/work sort of thing. This might not be the case but it could very well be. Creative freedom is also probably not excercised as much cause I mean they do look almost the same or has similarities to any other show. It might just be the standard. There's also the commercialization of animation. These could be the various reasons for why animation in present look like this. For cartoons that are much older like the superman and batman aninated series, I don't have a problem cause it shows the time when it was produced, how there are more constraints at that time, and it has become quite iconic, it is its own charm. For cartoons these days, yeah... they tend to look alike. The style definitely caters to young children imo. I also do want for the some of the artstyle used in the comicbooks to be adapted in animation cause it is cool, but some, if not all, will definitely be tricky, afterall animation and illustration are an entirely different fields of art. You could probably draw a whole panel or chapter (some manga artist have weekly schedule) that's highly detailed within one week as an illustrator but as an animator, your progress in one week might just be 1 sec to 1 min of animation of a 20-40 minute episode depending on how much work, time or detail you put into that project. There's also probably a risk involved from deviating from the standard artstyle, like it's too graphic or something. Overall, I think that arstyle is just commonly used nowadays cause it's easier and faster to do (probably cheaper too, but idk). Everything seems to be done so quickly, that if it's scheduled to be released soon, there's no time for exploring new artstyle so just stick to the standard/commonly used style.
Ngl though, I would rather have a a good story with decent animation rather than a bad/messy story with great animation cause for me the story is more important in the long run imho. A great animation might attract me to watch it at first but it's not enough reason for me to stick around till the end. Keeping and looking at a complete comic with messy story and great art is no problem cause it doesn't take as much time as with animated stuff. I like to look at cool visuals too(I'm still in the process of learning how to draw/illustrate so I like drawings even more cause it serves as an inspiration), but if you promised it is a good show, then the story is what I'm automatically inclined to look forward to. I want both aspects to be good/great, but it seems like newer cartoons will continue to look the identical. I don't hate the artstyle, but I'm definitely not excited to seek it out if I ever saw it. The idea of each cartoon doing it's own style is better imo, it will look unique to one another and definitely seems more creative. Raising the standard might be a good idea, but Idk how it should be implemented.
Sorry for the long reply. I hope I was able to express myself properly (or atleast clear enough) about this issue cause english is not my mother tongue. If you've read all of this, thank you.
@@blumae1170 I understand. I do. But they can be drawn better. Anime is everyday. Even John Romita Jr. did a Black Panther animation series(look it up). So it can be done. I'm not talking about perfect panels of comic art in motion. I just want better art.
If only DC adapted their OWN animated movies into the live action features.
"Spaz" is the perfect word Chris!
Loving these retro toon reviews! This version of Superman was my favorite as a kid
Superman TAS was brilliant just finished Season 2
