A couple of things about Scar-face episodes 1. Because Scar-face is a doll, he always died in the most gruesome ways because the tv censors didn't have a problem with dolls being shot up. 2. Multiple personality disorder is a highly contested condition in the mental health field. 3. Batman in the cartoon animated series is not just someone who locks up criminals, as Bruce Wayne, he sponsors half-way houses for ex-convicts, as briefly hinted on in this video.
yep. when scarface came back in the new batman adventures, batman warned the ventriquilist's old gang to stay away from him because he was on the road to recovery.
@@maxacorn Also, mentioned in the episode, the half-way house the ventriloquist was staying at was set up by The Wayne Foundation. So yeah, Batman/Bruce Wayne were criminal justice reformers as well as rogue law enforcement.
"Baby Doll" wasn't necessarily a sad episode, but the ending is definitely somber. The episode y'all talking about with Robin & Clayface's daughter "Growing Pains" is definitely up there as one of the saddest eps.
The first episode featuring Baby Doll was deep too. "I didn't mean to..." Also in later episodes with the Ventriloquist he developed a speech impediment after a fight.
They had me cracking up on the DVD commentary for this episode, talking about how extreme the animators made Batman's expression when he realizes Scarface is a dummy. Ever since, I've referred to any image of Batman with his mouth hanging open in shock as 'It's a Puppet?!' Batman.
I've watched every episode of this show. It's amazing. Mask Of The Phantasm is my favorite Batman movie still today. I was 21 when the cartoon started and saw a few episodes. This is an excellent example of the Dark Deco aesthetic of the show
It also had cursing as well. The early episodes. Some guy told the riddler who The hell are you? My mother heard it and was not Amused. Think she turned the t.v. off.
I forgot just how damn good BTAS was. It not only presented, arguably, the best version of Batman. It was absolutely integral in changing the perceptions of what animation could be, in North America.
Batman has the best villains because he sympathizes with them. Interesting that the ventriloquist got help. I remember an episode of Justice league where they went to another earth and ended up on another earth in Arkham, and all the villains were pretty much lobotomized by Superman‘s heat vision. Look closely, and one of the villains is Scarface being held by the ventriloquist. Except, only Scarface has the lobotomy scars.
I’m kind of surprised we haven’t seen more of Scarface. We get hints in the Arkham games even Gotham knights, but nothing really on screen. I’d be interested in seeing him in more recent stuff and see what they do.
@@COSun25 Understandable, but maybe I’m viewing it as part of the audience, it such a limited view of character they could really go and depth. Like a really flushed out backstory and maybe even horror elements on the part of Scarface could be something he needs.
The spining news paper thing is something old movies from the 30's and 40's did. Which is in theme with the cars, clothes, phrases, and music in the show. All homage to classic cinema, but applied to the world of Batman. This makes for the best representation of Batman in any medium, in my opinion. You guys should review TWO-FACE Parts 1 & 2. So much to unpack there.
I must be old and forgetful. I thought that this cartoon was originally on Fox. I think I remember it originally being a daytime, daily cartoon that gained an adult following and became part of Fox's Sunday night lineup. I remember loving that, for the non-batman comic book reader, this show answered questions regarding Batman that you always wondered about (who makes his amazing toys, from who did Batman learn to do what he does, how does he seem to move so stealthily and get out of no win situations [training with samauri, ninjas, magicians], etc.). Two of my favorite episodes were "Feat of Clay" and "Almost Got'em" and I think "Demon's Quest".
Omg! The ad which played right before this video started was the BetterHelp "Pad Thai" commercial, and your guest in this clip looks SOOO much like the actor from that ad (right down to wearing a hat), that for a moment, I honestly believed I was either hallucinating or that the ad somehow bled into your video! 😅 I mean, side-by-side they do look different, but I definitely did a double take! That's not a knock on your guest though, since both he and the dude from the commercial look like cool and decent chaps, it was just kinda jarring for me initially Lol.
A retro episode for “on leather wings” would be a lot more fun and would be so cool to see Chris praising the episode introducing the detective side of Batman
Not only that but really shows in the future when Batman has to fight claymonsters, crocodile men, werewolves, and other things from the box of how the hell does that work, Batman can take it in stride. "Gordon I had to fight a bat human hydid on my first day...crazy clowns hold my drink.
Scarface and the ventriloquist are the most underrated enemies in Batman franchise, there was a lot of appearance in the animated series but never in videogames beside to be just a cameo / easter egg (and a little part in GOTHAM) but seriously i find that they are creepy, scary and a interesting design, there need a movie with them or better: a movie like "JOKER"
Batman TAS debut on Fox Kids 1992 along with X-men the animated series...total game changers...in 1997 Batman had newer episodes based in Superman TAS series universe changing networks to kids WB
I always loved Batman:TAS epsiodes that featured his "B" tier villains. Like Scarface, Killer Croc, Clayface, and Mad Hatter. Film noir is a strong back bone for the series and works so well.
I just bought the complete series on dvd recently, and so far my favourite episode was “The Grey Ghost” with Adam West. You guys should review that episode because not only was it a good episode, but there was a lot of hidden commentary on West’s life after the 1960’s Batman show.
TAS did something unheard-of, even today, with superheroes and villains. They actually addressed that many of these people have mental illnesses and that they aren't necessarily villains, they're just troubled, out of touch with reality, products of circumstances, or pawns. Batman actually sympathized with some of them, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, even Scarface/Wesker, just to name a few. You'll never see a superhero movie or show that has the hero sympathize with their antagonist. Actually, I take that back, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier did it, and I thought it did a pretty good job. Batman TAS added layers to its characters, especially the villains. It was good story telling.
Even though it's a puppet, they still moved and positioned him oriented around his handler within the frame like an actor. It's like how actors hit their camera angles to help project emotion and intent. Poor guy really was a hostage to that puppet. Not to get dark, but it's kind of a similar dynamic to how Korey does his camera switching to frame the other hosts during their exchanges.
Batman The Animated Series was a huge part of my childhood in the 90's. I remember after school I would watch it with my brother. Kevin Conroy will always be the definitive version of Batman for the animated series and Batman movies and games. You guys should definitely review more Batman episodes especially with Clayface and The Grey Ghost.
Batman the animated series had a version of mr.Freeze that was very sympathetic. But you feel bad about his situation. That was unfortunately poorly translated into Batman and Robin 1997.
WB Kids? That's where it wound up later on in the 90s. However go back and look at the 1992 tv schedule. Batman TAS was so mature that it actually was playing in primetime on FOX Sunday Nights for a short time when it started. Then it eventually went to Saturday Mornings.
I remember back in the day in the comcis he had one of the wildest deaths. I found it way too hilarious but looking at this retro review it really points out that the person he was always the most dangerous to was himself. His death in the comics was he was in his apartment when his Scarface puppet and a sock puppet got into a heated arguement and both had their guns. Needless to say they had a shoot out and The Ventriloquist was the casualty.
So, in addition to "Read My Lips", Joe R. Landsdale was also involved in the "Batman: The Animated Series" episode "Perchance to Dream", where he wrote the teleplay for the episode based on a story credited to Laren Bright and Michael Reaves. "Perchance to Dream" is widely considered one of the best -- if not the best -- episodes of the series. Landsdale also co-wrote a Superman episode called "Identity Crisis" with Robert Goodman, which features the introduction of Bizarro and has a lot of fun with all the implications of that character.

Batman The Animated Series is one of my favorite cartoons alongside The Owl House, Amphibia, Men In Black The Series, Ed Edd n Eddy, Courage The Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, Ben 10 Alien Force, Recess, Rugrats, American Dragon Jake Long, The Proud Family, Lilo & Stitch, Steven Universe, Craig of the Creek, Regular Show, Adventure Time, Pokémon, Batman Beyond, SpongeBob SquarePants and Animaniacs.
Ventriloquists with Dissociative Identity Disorder using a puppet as their evil persona is not an original idea for television. The first time I saw this was the twilight zone episode THE DUMMY. Cliff Robertson played the ventriloquist with George Murdock as the dummy’s voice. I’m sure that there were a couple of television shows or books or movies that have used the same the same premise. Off the top of my head Earle Towne played this type of character in an episode of Barney Miller which is one of his only two IMDb credits. Jay Thomas probably made a career playing characters like these. Thomas played Bob and Chuck on SOAP but he also played a creepy DID ventriloquist on an episode of the short lived Mrs. Columbo. There are probably several more in recent TV history.
I want Scarface in one of the new Batman movies No questions asked Book that shit Do that shit Watch the amounts roll in I'll go see it many times if they do this
I finally started watching the series last year around the time The Batman came out (I was a 2000s kid but for some reason never had friends who were into Batman 🤷🏽♂️) and yea I agree with Korey. It’s not for little kids..it’s kid friendly but not in a Minions sorta way. There are many mature themes that I appreciate more as an adult. Really glad this episode is discussed. RIP Kevin Conroy.
Another fun fact about Batman: He hates Lex Luthor more then any of his own villains and even claims Lex is even worse then the Joker. He even admitted he'd be fine if Superman decided to just kill him and would even help make it look like an accident if he did.
He never fully gets cured. You see him in later episodes up to the "new adventures" series Also to answer Korey's question the reason the villains don't (or can't) pull his cowl off is because it's rigged with a powerful taser that shocks and knocks out anyone other than Bruce who tries to remove it (shown later in the JL cartoons)
Y’all should do a video with reel rejects😅 they mentioned u in their community tab for a review of yours they like a lot a few days ago and u Seeing Greg and Cory AND BILLY on the screen together would be fucking awesome!😂 much love DT crew💯
This animated show was probly the best of its time .. great art and story telling ..batman, superman, spiderman, and the x-men made my Saturday mornings
A lot of good DC animated shows back in the 90s and early 200s. Along with Batman, there was also Superman, Justice League, Justice League: Unlimited, Static Shock, and Batman Beyond.
It was on Fox Kids from 1992-1997 and then moved to WB Kids as part of the alternating Superman/Batman slot that showcased the New Adventures of Batman with all the character revamps.
Underrated!? My nigga, it's the BEST adaptation of the character. Nearly everyone agrees that it's the greatest superhero series of all time. His show alone introduced the DCAU.
Given the recent passing of Kevin Conroy, as well as the failure of the DCEU as a whole, as well as the fact the James Gunn has openly cited this continuity as a major inspiration for the live-action films moving forward, I think it would be cool for you guys to check out different (or key?) episodes of the shows and movies that make up the DC Animated Universe. "Batman: The Animated Series" was seminal in its own right, but it did unintentionally launch the DCAU, that would go on to include "Superman the Animated Series", "The New Batman Adventures", "Batman Beyond", "Static Shock", "The Zeta Project", "Justice League", "Justice League Unlimited", as well as a handful of movies like "SubZero" and "Return of the Joker" to name a few. Every series was solid in their own right, and by the time you get to "Justice League Unlimited", they were calling back to stories & characters that were brought up in previous series, and built on them. This really was the first real successful on-screen superhero shared universe that took its continuity seriously, and did it pretty well overall.
No it wasn’t. The Incredible Hulk tv show in the 80s had Daredevil and Thor in it. Spider-Man would’ve showed up with a symbiote but Bill Bixby passed before filming.
@@wilcee238 Ehh, Thor & Daredevil only showed up in that one Incredible Hulk movie. And if Spidey didn’t officially show up, then it didn’t happen. I guess what I really mean is that In the case here, we actually had legit crossovers between characters from these different shows, which eventually culminated in storylines that happened years down the line. And these weren’t just one and done crossovers either. Later storylines in JLU called back to events and story points of previous shows and movies; some of which occurred at least a decade or so prior. And these callbacks, to varying degrees, informed story developments that would come to pass in the future. MAYBE we can make an argument for the 90s Spidey adapting Secret Wars, but his teaming up with other Marvel Characters didn’t have the extensive backstory/history that the DCAH had built.
If they ever decide to bring the character to the big screen, they need to get Mike Smith to play him. If you are a Trailer Park Boys fan, you will know what I mean :)
I think Scarface is an underrated, tragic villain like Baby Doll or Clock King. Unless you watched the Animated Series or read the comics, not many fans are aware of him. I hope you can review more episodes when you have time, like Channel Awesome and his Bat-May series. Please review Mystery of the Batwoman if you can. 🙏🏾
Before it was on WB, it was on FOX's afternoon show. It was the last show to be broadcast Mon-Fri at 04:30p.m. it went to WB once FOX decided to move all cartoons off its platform
Late comment. Good reaction fellas. I never would've thought this was an actual character from the comics. Arnold Wesker (Scarface/ Ventriloquist) actually debuted 35 years ago in Detective Comics. He was voiced by George Dzundra. Who would also voice Perry White on the Superman animated series. This episode was a real cluster of madness. It was a very gangster story and deeply effective psychodrama. The ventriloquist has been live-action already. Played by real-life ventriloquist Andrew Sellon during seasons 4 and 5 of the live-action 'Gotham' (2014-2019).
One thing I love about Batman the Animated series is Bruce and Batman don't feel separate. We see Bruce react to messed up stiff as Batman and it humanizes him. This version of Batman will be timeless because it's him at his best, a human (with minimal plot armor) who has to use his brain to deal with any and all threats to Gotham.
Im rewatching BTAS. This is one of the best cartoons of all time! I remember watching as a kid after karate class. As adult I understand dark deco, noir, and 1940s aesthics. As a child I like the villians and old vibe and it was dark. At that time Batman was the only super hero that I liked. Its worth the watch!
In the 90s comics western lost scarface and created another personality called socks. Dcarface was found and they fought, both shot each other as wesler yelled noo. Last panel has wester on ground eyes closed, apparently bleeding out.

Off the top of my head
Earle Towne played this type of character in an episode of Barney Miller which is one of his only two IMDb credits.
Jay Thomas probably made a career playing characters like these. Thomas played Bob and Chuck on SOAP but he also played a creepy DID ventriloquist on an episode of the short lived Mrs. Columbo.
There are probably several more in recent TV history.
I want Scarface in one of the new Batman movies
No questions asked
Book that shit
Do that shit
Watch the amounts roll in
I'll go see it many times if they do this
I finally started watching the series last year around the time The Batman came out (I was a 2000s kid but for some reason never had friends who were into Batman 🤷🏽♂️) and yea I agree with Korey. It’s not for little kids..it’s kid friendly but not in a Minions sorta way. There are many mature themes that I appreciate more as an adult. Really glad this episode is discussed. RIP Kevin Conroy.
I had a theory that Scarface was a dummy haunted by the ghost of a mobster.
Another fun fact about Batman: He hates Lex Luthor more then any of his own villains and even claims Lex is even worse then the Joker. He even admitted he'd be fine if Superman decided to just kill him and would even help make it look like an accident if he did.
Really?
He never fully gets cured. You see him in later episodes up to the "new adventures" series
Also to answer Korey's question the reason the villains don't (or can't) pull his cowl off is because it's rigged with a powerful taser that shocks and knocks out anyone other than Bruce who tries to remove it (shown later in the JL cartoons)
I feel like this is what happens when Korybot comes to the company meetings.
Y’all should do a video with reel rejects😅 they mentioned u in their community tab for a review of yours they like a lot a few days ago and u
Seeing Greg and Cory AND BILLY on the screen together would be fucking awesome!😂 much love DT crew💯
Look up the Movie Trivia Schmoedown, it was a trivia show on youtube, and DT actually went up against Reel Rejects. Its a great episode
@@Smokey1419 oh shit thanks man!🙏🏾
Series didn't feel like anything else on TV. I remember when new episodes used to premier on Sunday nights on Fox.
Scarface would be a good villain for a Batman movie
The Batman Animated Series is the one True Batman!!
Yeah, DC used to be THE BEST! Hate how far they've fallen with crap like Harley quinn.
Batman The Animated Series takes me back to my childhood. I would never miss it after school. I miss those days.
BTAS knew how to tell a story.. kids and adults can still appreciate this gem...Greatest cartoon of all time!
Of all the episodes this is one of a few that really stuck with me and I still remember, even though I haven’t seen the episode in a couple decades.
14:25 Stop it! I'm 75 years old! 😆
It was on Fox Kids from 1992-1997 and then moved to WB Kids as part of the alternating Superman/Batman slot that showcased the New Adventures of Batman with all the character revamps.
Used to watch this tough when I was 5 or 6. My poor mom had no idea how dark this batman was 😂
Batman The Animated Series remains one of the most underrated shows of all time.
Hardly underrated since its considered by so many people to be the best animated show ever
Underrated!? My nigga, it's the BEST adaptation of the character. Nearly everyone agrees that it's the greatest superhero series of all time. His show alone introduced the DCAU.
@@Shng275 Facts
Nah not Underrated at all
I don't think it's underrated. This, X-Men Animated Series & Gargoyles get a lot of praise
Anthony Hopkins could play the Ventriloquist vs Robert Pattinson's The Batman.
He did play corky/Fats in Magic (1978) so that would be cool
Now THAT'S what I want to see!
I'm so glad you love this villain too! He's one of my favorites - well, villains lol. Scarface and Ventriloquist, so beautiful.
Korey talking about Batman again. Take a shot when he mentions The Dark Knight.
RIP, Kevin Conroy.
FYI, The entire series is on HBO Max right now
Does anyone else think that this would be a compelling story for Matt Reeves to pursue in " The Batman " sequel? The realism is there.
Yall gotta do the 90s spiderman cartoon especially the black spiderman suit episode😂
"SHOCKKKERRRRRR!!!! I'LL CHASE YOU TO THE ENDS OF THE EARRRTTTTHHHHH!!!!
"Almost got 'em" best episode
If they ever decide to bring the character to the big screen, they need to get Mike Smith to play him. If you are a Trailer Park Boys fan, you will know what I mean :)
I feel like they should watch 'Ringing Bell/ Chirin's Bell'
I think Scarface is an underrated, tragic villain like Baby Doll or Clock King. Unless you watched the Animated Series or read the comics, not many fans are aware of him. I hope you can review more episodes when you have time, like Channel Awesome and his Bat-May series. Please review Mystery of the Batwoman if you can. 🙏🏾
Before it was on WB, it was on FOX's afternoon show. It was the last show to be broadcast Mon-Fri at 04:30p.m. it went to WB once FOX decided to move all cartoons off its platform
I hope the they review more Batman TAS episodes. I'll love to see a review of Feat of Clay, Baby Doll, Two-Face, Heart of Ice, and Joker's Favor.
Batman’s most underrated villain, I hope John Lithgow plays The Ventriloquist in the next Matt Reeves Batman movie
Fun fact: Tim Burton asked John Lithgow to play the Joker in Batman 89, but he turned it down.
@@MrKrk221988 I have heard that, he would have been pretty good.
Have Twoface and Scarface ever met in comics? Would be an interesting gang war.
I just want the Ventriloquist in the Penguin tv series
Just wanna say the show Gotham captured the city perfectly in my opinion
In the 90s comics western lost scarface and created another personality called socks. Dcarface was found and they fought, both shot each other as wesler yelled noo. Last panel has wester on ground eyes closed, apparently bleeding out.
Anyone know what happened to cohost? Does he have a channel?
RIP Kevin Conroy... He will always be my Batman. The DCAU will always be my DC universe. Joker, Twoface, Penguin, Robin, Batgirl, Alfred, Superman, Lex, Darkseid, Brainiac, Steward, Flash, MN, WM, etc... I can name them all.
