RIP Shirley Walker. She was the heart of 90s animated Batman. Her great music gave them a grander score than other animated ventures and a lot more emotional depths.
24:58 What’s brilliant about that scene is Bruce isn’t really talking to his parents. He’s talking to the darkness inside his head, begging to be released from his vow. He didn’t expect to find happiness, but he did with Andrea. His parents would 100% want him to be happy and give up the vow he made. There’s no way a parent would be okay with their son risking his life every night to fight a never ending war on crime.

Kinda cool how the phantasm is revisited in justice league unlimited when they show the explanation of Amanda Waller trying to make another batman in the batman beyond episode. A great way to call the movie back and show how vast the DCAU universe is
It's kind of neat they brought it back, though that episode was real dumb. It made Terry's backstory really contrived, and made it seem like Batman needed to be genetically connected to the Wayne's when that should never have been introduced.
Joker’s gangster backstory in this is pretty much the same as it is in the 89’ movie. I personally love it. I know some people only love the “jokers past is mysterious” thing, but like Chris and Martin said, I love the whole concept of the acid just being the icing on the cake to an already cold blooded person
For what it's worth, if memory serves me correctly it is implied that Bruce did eventually find some measure of happiness and peace during his time being Terry's mentor and secondary father figure.
Bruces's tragic life makes the eventual revelation that Bruce is Terry's biological father and that Terry would carry on his legacy and be there for him in his final days. That scene and Batman sitting with the girl as she died still bring me to tears and are DC at their strongest.

Actually my favorite Batman film. The scene at the graveyard defines Bruce Wayne perfectly. Also the idea that Andrea had gotten to him early enough she could have pulled him out of the abyss. And then her own story got in the way.
Great movie, and great entry to the overall DCAU. Yet another glaring reminder about how disappointing DC's failure to create a shared universe was, considering the DC Animated Universe, led by Bruce Timm & his creative teams, was such a resounding success from 1992 to 2006. Man the “I didn’t count on being happy” line is so unfortunately so true for a lot of people. The guilt of happiness seems so backwards and self destructive, but that t applies to so many people. This movie was a childhood classic for me, but as always y’all did have some points of criticism that I would’ve liked seen applied to the movie, but still overall a great Batman film and so dark/gritty/mature for something ultimately geared towards kids in the best way possible
Loved this film when it came out(seen it in theaters) and still do. sidenote- I don't know about Korey doing a good Joker laugh, but damn that was a spot on Crypt keeper laugh.
This wasn't promoted very well. It was also originally supposed to be direct to video then it was decided for it to have a theatrical release. This is top 3 of my Batman movie list along with Batman 89 and Batman Begins. I became a fan of the animation style because of it. The expressions didn't bother me at all. I never noticed it until now. The animation was definitely smoother than the show. Those wide angle shots wouldn't have looked the same. The story is so intense. Like an opera.
Wanna know what's really ironic. I first saw this movie 10 years ago around this time, on vhs, my favorite thrift store had this movie and brought it , original clamshell and all. So good, plus the ending theme music is top notch.
Until Batman Begins, always felt this to be the best Batman movie. Also, while BvS was a dumpster fire, the 3 part “World’s Finest” arc, of the Batman/Superman Adventures, is a shining example of how amazing that pairing should’ve been. Bruce Timm and crew were on their stuff.
16:35 and 17:10 If you compare the women's designs in the comic version, they are more attractive. I always asked why did the two ladies look unappealing here. Aside from this and some animation errors, I do enjoy this movie more as an adult. I was 4 when Mask of the Phantasm released, so not understanding who Batman was or some of the elements in the plot, I didn't appreciate the movie then. We see a vulnerable, emotional side to Bruce that I wish was explored more. I love his relationship with Andrea, I prefer if he was with her over Catwoman.
The trick is to never leave an opening in the conversation where Batman can jump in with a response. He'll just sit outside the window all night waiting.
I remember on Christmas Day 1993 I wanted to see this, instead my parents took me to see Beethoven 2nd, which I still enjoyed back then. As soon as Batman Mask of the Phantasm came out on video I remember my parents renting it for me because their aware how much I wanted to see it and I remember do liking it.
The Phantasm character came back in the final episode of Justice league Unlimited in a flashback. Amanda Waller told her to kill Terry' s parents so he could become the new Batman. But she didn't do it at the last moment.
The best Batman film, not just animated, but all the Batman movies. My judgment is clouded by nostalgia, but I really feel it gives Batman more character depth than any other movie.
Just want to point out, calling it a box office bomb is a bit misleading. It was a last minute decision to give it a theatrical release, among other things. It wasn't a bomb because people thought it was bad
I'm sorry. It's not just Nostalgia talking. This is the very first Batman film that I ever saw in theaters. My dad took me. When that pounding opening score hit by the late Shirley Walker, I was in Gotham for the very first time. But the music is just one thing that this film does perfect. The screenplay the dialogue, the voice acting from Mark and Kevin. The twist. It's also actually the only theatrical Batman film with a compelling love story. There's almost a horror element to the film as well . I'm shocked it was PG . It's genuinely a shame that so few people know about it. Thank you for reviewing it. I hope more people watch and it gets the credit it deserves. I know I'd ruffled feathers by saying it beats The Dark Knight even though I like it better but it sure as hell beats every other film. I'll damn sure say that
The only reason this bombed at the box office was because it was put in theaters at the last minute of Christmas season '93. It actually wasn't supposed to be in theaters, but Warner Bros decided at the last minute to do so.
Came out on Christmas Day in 1993. Saw this in the theatres after Christmas dinner and it was the biggest of the presents that I had gotten that day. No doubt that it's one of the best Batman films ever and it follows the legendary animated series without fail. The first-ever DC Animated film. Not too many people acknowledge it as such. To most; it's just another Batman movie and after Batman Returns (1992), all you wanted was more of The Dark Knight. It is a perfect film. Even if the criticism was very high. Would've been nice to see it gross a huge bundle of money though.
5:06 Season 3 Episode 24 Second Chance. Someone is kidnapping Two-Face from the operating room and Batman can't break through the glass to stop the kidnapping.
5:05 This scene is hilarious to me. I was laughing so hard because I thought the exact same thing of what would happen if Batman couldn’t break the window he swings into. 🤣🤣🤣

@@animationfanatic2133 that still doesn't make it underrated and no one is pontificating. Even compared to the live action films Phantasm is one of the most, if not THE most, universally lauded Batman film(s) in history. That's a fact. If you want to say certain people haven't heard of this movie then overlooked/failed to notice is the word or term that fits.
Glad DT covered this amazing film. A good and very funny review. 25:07 had me hollering!!! Korey funy as shit.😫😭😭😭😭
The intro for this movie is still good.😫 The chills come in for the mask part.😫😱😱
This movie is great, Andrea Belmont as the Phantom was a great twist and her reasons where legit.
I knew it was Andrea when she did the Judo move on Bruce. I also saw the sausage coming
This is the best animated Joker performance second to Batman Beyond Return Of The Joker.
Wanna know what's really ironic.
I first saw this movie 10 years ago around this time, on vhs, my favorite thrift store had this movie and brought it , original clamshell and all. So good, plus the ending theme music is top notch.
Loved it then, love it now. Proudly sits in my library with the deluxe blu-ray box set of the Animated Series.
‘Mask of The Phantasm’ is easily my favorite Batman movie of all time.
This Batman 1989 and Returns are my favorite of the character.
@@Thespeedrap Agreed
The best Batman movie easily. Kevin Conroy and mark hamill, can't go wrong
My dad took me and my brother to see this at the movies on Christmas when it first came out, definitely a classic!!
A Batman movie on Christmas.
The gift that keeps on giving.
I saw it after Christmas dinner.
Siskel and Ebert were also impressed by this film, but Siskel stated he disliked Mark Hamill’s Joker voice, which I disagree with
Facts I couldn't believe Siskel didn't like Hamill's voice as the Joker smh.
Actually went to the theater to see this. Gotta put this high on the list of great Batman movies
One of my favorite batman movies
43:35 without spoiling anything, this version of Joker indeed does die later on, but not before scarring Bruce forever and giving him a limp.
Dude, that kind of spoils everything. Haha
"I didn't plan on being happy. "
That line made me cry the first time I saw this movie.
The Phantasm character came back in the final episode of Justice league Unlimited in a flashback. Amanda Waller told her to kill Terry' s parents so he could become the new Batman. But she didn't do it at the last moment.
Lex Luthor actually reinforces his buildings so Batman's grapnel bounce off of them.
Lmao...I did not know that. I know Lex shuts all criminal operations down when Batman comes to Metropolis though.
The best Batman film, not just animated, but all the Batman movies. My judgment is clouded by nostalgia, but I really feel it gives Batman more character depth than any other movie.
The Dark Knight is better, and I liked Mask Of The Phantasm.
Bruce Timm gets a ton of credit but most of the greatest Batman TAS episodes are thanks to the writers, specifically Paul Dini
Mask of Phantasm is my favorite theatrical release Batman movies so far. Dark Knight is close #2 and then Batman Beyond!
RIP Kevin Conroy.
@5:17 ~ Something similar happened in a *Spider-Man* comic. The Kingpin was amused. Spidey, not so much
Love Tia Carria song at the end of the film
I added that to my playlist, lol
So good.
Just finished rewatching this movie and now ready for the review 😃
It's a wonderful movie. My favorite batman movie.
The chanting is actually the choir singing the names of the production crew.
Just want to point out, calling it a box office bomb is a bit misleading. It was a last minute decision to give it a theatrical release, among other things. It wasn't a bomb because people thought it was bad
There was a comic book which came out, set after this movie, which explains a number of the film’s plot points at the end
I'll damn sure say that
"The Bat is gonna kill us! Save me, Joker!"
"Yeah, I could do that. ORRRRR..."
Still my favourite Batman movie, even more than "The Dark Knight". By the way, "Under the red hood" is just as great
Don't forget The Dark knight returns
It deserved better promotion when It came out. Still one of the best Batman films made so far.
The only reason this bombed at the box office was because it was put in theaters at the last minute of Christmas season '93. It actually wasn't supposed to be in theaters, but Warner Bros decided at the last minute to do so.
I hope to see Batman vs Dracula movie review one day on this show.
The DC animated movies are great. I wish they could get their live action movies right.
That was funny af when Chris said “I am the knight” 🤣🤣. Almost had me spitting out my water
It night not knight.

"My daddy said y'all gotta go home" is EVERYTHING!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
33:34 If you look at the silhouette of The Joker, it looks like he just stabbed the guy with something.
I love how they brought her character in an episode of Justice League. When Waller hires her to kill Terry Mcguiness's parents.
It underperformed because back in the 90s there was a stigma that cartoons are only for children.
I'm shocked by how much of this movie went right over Korey's head. 😲
He just be trying to find anything to make a joke about, movie was good, he was tripping.
I’d put this just a step below killing joke but it’s pretty close.
I hope you guys review Batman: Under The Red Hood
Saw this movie opening weekend. I liked it then but I LOVE it now!
this is the best Batman animated movie of all time to me.
The doctor trying to calm down the councilman, reminds me of Mr Martin Thomas!😂🤣💯%
23:42 I'll start digging the grave. 😂 😂 😂 I lost it!
