My biggest problem with From's weapon balancing is that they often put in weapons that are just straight inferior to something else. An example from this video would be Forked vs Flamberge. Other than fashion, there is no reason to ever use Forked over Flamberge.
I wish we could have square off on greatswords, it would be so nice. Also, good to know my assumptions about the knights and banished greatsword being extremely good are more or less correct.
@@Tobascodagama yeah, but imagine if both stamp skills were combined into one? Sweep with R1 and Upward Cut with R2. Would be a much better skill as a result.
I know it's one of the worst ones, but I have a soft spot for the Lordsworn GS, I just like it aesthetically and like that it's the only GS class weapon with higher than 100 crit modifier, at 110. Probably ties to the build I used it on, ran it on a faith build because I didnt need any dexterity investment beyond base 10 prophet begins with, with flame art infusion and Flame of the Redmanes skill. Staggered enemies enough that the higher critical modifier came into play quite a lot.
@@felironmaden1429 for sure, initially I was gonna farm the Lordsworn SS early from that camp because the theme of the build was a Lordsworn sort of character but figured, might as well just use the GS and I'll get the SS to drop eventually.
I used to shit on the Knight's/Banished Knight's GS for not having a thrust r2. But after just finding out their jump r1/backstep/r2 combos into another r1, I'm convinced these are good and slept on. With glintblade phalanx and cold infusion, you can basically decide when to stunlock your opponent. Keep up the good work! Thanks to your vids, we get to see interesting weapons and info to make the game more interesting.
Yeah, I didn't know those were true combos! Anything with a true combo is at least worth looking into. They're not going to be meta, but having a decent reward for hitting certain attacks is at least pretty fun!
I don't know if it's because of latency but my jumping R1s really don't true combo into R1. Even for the R2, it's only the fully charged one that combos and not the regular one. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong cause I'm perplexed to say the least
@12:00 Minor point of correction, the GOGS is implied to be reforged version of Rennala's wedding sword, not Ranni's DMGS, so going by Rennala's titles the GOGS's original sword name would be something like "The Full Moon Greatsword" but we never get confirmation that Ranni isn't somehow breaking tradition with her marriage sword design and name beyond the GOGS weapon art and style similarities.

The Banished Knight's has higher AR on most of the infusions though :) It is a preference thing whether you want the range or the AR (unless it is keen/cold where Knight's definitely wins).

I have and always will love the Bastard Sword no matter what. It's the best looking sword. No excess adornment and ornamental engravings. Just pure functionality. I think it is actually a contender to the Iron Greatsword, as it is lighter and more accessible, as it is very fast and easy to obtain. The AR differences at the highest levels don't always make the heaviest most base damaging weapon the best. Builds can be very complicated, and having low weight and requirements makes it easier to make a versatile build. If you're trying to make a light roll build that uses a Greatsword, you might want to try pick up a Bastard Sword, or more usually the Claymore, instead of Iron Greatsword. Iron Greatsword is the end game min max non-somber heavy weapon.
Why alabaster gs is great : It is the lightest in its class and consumes MUCH LESS STAMINA in all hits, almost twice as many hits with the same stamina the second charged r2 has THE SECOND HIGHEST STAGGER AND MOTION VALUE (which makes the damage astronomically greater) IN THE ENTIRE GAME (more than colossal weapons), second only to greathammers Unlike the video, Ash of War deals 80% PHYSICAL DAMAGE and 20% magical (not just magical) and has an area of effect larger than gravitas and hits through walls
Tbh it’s really frustrating how many greatswords there are compared to say straight swords. Especially when so many of the greatswords like the Alabaster Lord’s Sword just look like straight swords that were scaled up to greatsword size. Unique move sets and weapon arts help different weapons feel unique, but nothing beats using a whole new weapon class - and when it comes to multiple playthroughs, I don’t want to just be using a great sword every damn time.
@@Chrightt My bad, I did not word my comment very well. There are a bunch of straight swords, but almost all of them share exactly the same or almost the same move set and have no unique properties. Aka for those swords it really comes down to a DPS battle; and going off your video on them, it seems like the Broadsword works out as hands-down the best sword for nearly all infusions - at least the physical ones. It’s a shame that unless you push dexterity to its absolute limit, the Broadsword still beats out nearly every other straight sword for Sharp infusion, and still infuses way better with Heavy. With greatswords, it seems like even the ones that lag behind in DPS often make up for it with a unique mechanic or moveset. Whereas it seems like the niche straight swords generally aren’t that remarkable or viable compared to the niche greatswords. I would have much preferred there be best in slot options for all infusions, or more unique move sets. I will forever lament only the short sword having the 2hR2 thrust that’s been in all the Dark Souls games 😢

Iron Greatsword may be the best among the standard regulars, but it is very annoying to farm. So the next best thing is the Gargoyle's Greatsword, which you are guaranteed to get one per game cycle... provided that you go and defeat the namesake boss. Maybe it's just me, but I reeeeeeally hate farming, especially if it's so annoying to do like Iron Greatsword, so I personally would rather settle and be happy with the 2nd best, just to save me some headache... lol. x)
What's frustrating is seeing places like Fextralife where people will go "correct" the data back to something wrong simply because it was correctly fixed to match videos like this. It really favors the groups that pump out rough early data that doesn't track when under scrutiny than it does legitimate testing and calculation. It's one reason I wasn't quick to rush my first character to the "you better play at 150+ meta level" line like everyone else was on release. There's just too much data to make such a rash decision so early.

Gotta disagree with you on the Sacred Relic over the Golden Order. At least for PvE. Let's be honest. They will mostly be used as spell sticks that also happen to have sharp edges. Both have a nice, long-range holy wave attack. And nothing farms pondering Albinaurics faster than SRS because the width and distance of the wave are massive. But it also only affects targets standing in it and terrain bumps will have a blocking effect. The GOG's wave has shorter range and narrower width, but it can hit elevated targets too. But ALSO, the GOG WA is a two-parter- the first part is a mid AoE stagger/ flinch that you can set up and control enemies with. AND you don't have to use the second part, as you just press the WA button once for the stagger, time the second press after for the wave. It has a LOT more utility and fp economy in this respect. Short range save/ control, or hit close some enemies and then some farther enemies with the same moveset.
You need to pay FP on both parts of the cast, so in order to get a ranged attack half as strong, you need to pay roughly the same FP cost. The initial AoE burst around you also takes quite a long time to cast. While it is possible to be blocked by terrain, it mostly has a good register as you can see from casting the sword wave on the stairs. It will still go up/down staircase whereas GoG can technically just have the sword wave run into the stairs with a poor angle or fly too high and miss everything below it. Personally speaking, I just don't cast GoG expecting myself to take a hit in order to knock enemies back. I'd just run out of range in the same amount of time it takes for the skill to go off, or if they're weak mobs that can get staggered I can just swing the greatsword itself. With a slight bit of distance created, relic just wipes. Also, since it is a faith build, you can also use wrath of gold (which is a faster incantation) if it is the AoE damage you need. While I do understand that there are rare occasions like flying monsters where GoG can perform better, I find that far and few in between to require 4x the amount of cast time for the full WA to pop off.

i only run greatswords on my main character becuase i'm very familiar with their movesets. before picking up the flamberge and blasphemous and powerstancing, i was a diehard knight's greatsword user. this video was very informative, well-made, and cohesive. i use the flamberge with a cold infusion because its procs do massive poise damage as well as regular damage. in NG+ i picked up another and used a fire infusion because AR. it is my favorite greatsword.
I'd like to point out that Ordovis' Greatsword is actually a beast of a weapon. You don't use it for the huge damage or something. It's actualy a stance breaking machine. One charged weapon art can break stances of many enemies. One charge and two heavy attacks for bosses. Then you again chain the weapon art as you can push its damage very, very high.

HI. Great analysis once again. One note though. Looking at Blood and Occult, at 45,16,45 (86 investment) you get 619 AR and 131 bleed from the blood iron greatsword, while at 16, 16, 80 (82 investment) you get 651AR and 112 bleed from occult flamberge. IMO it's better for bleed builds to go with blood iron greatsword, despite the slightly lover AR as you get more bleed but also you get to do it with more balanced stat spread allowing for more deserve options. That is a rather unique situation for bleed builds that I think deserves an extra note at the end when talking about bleed weapons, as usually occult weapons with innate bleed are far better then the blood infused options. :)
Unfortunately, i think most bleed builds are just going to slap seppuku on an occult flamberge anyway, and not have to choose between AR and bleed buildup at all. Sad that one weapon art completely defines an entire archetype of builds
I wish that the helphen steeple, blasphemous blade and golden order greatsword would've been intelligence and faith weapons. You all know about the first one; for the second one, gelmir sorceries require more intelligence than faith, Rykard's rancor requiring even 40/18, so I don't understand why this weapon is not atleast an A/C scaling weapon for int and faith; for the third, well, it literally says "golden order" in the title, and the description says that is made out of light, so I don't understand why it's not like the coded sword or cyphred (?) pata, that do weild basically nothing, have no requirements outside of faith and do only holy damage (wich is pretty bad, but that's another discussion), so I just wish this weapon would've had an A/A scaling with int and faith. These builds got so "nerfed" in this game, I don't understand why fromsoftware doesn't like them.
Having a greatsword with 0 weight would be kinda bonkers though Also, holy damage is terrible in PVE, but in PVP it is actually better than fire damage. Fire resistence scales with vigor and any decent player will have high vigor, meaning they will also have high fire resistence.
The reason they are not int/faith weapons is because of how scaling works. Each stat has an associated damage type. Physical scales of strength and/or dexterity. Magic from int. Fire and holy from faith. And lightning from dexterity. You will never find a weapon that does magic damage and scales of faith, or a fire weapon that scales from int. The coded sword scales only from faith, because it only does holy damage. If it had physical damage, then it would also scale from strenght or dexterity. This is why there are "so many" weapons that scale from faith, because faith covers 2 damage types. The only weapon that has int/faith scaling is the sword of night and flame, and it's because it does fire (faith) and magic (int) damage. And just in case someone tells me, "but the lava sorceries do fire damage and they scale of int". No they don't. They scale of your staff, which can scale of anything depending of the staff itself.
I think it's important to note that the DMGS weapon skill also deals incredible amounts of stance damage, so you can stagger enemies while staying at a safe distance.
Ordovis gets the buff from the talisman that boosts your damage after consecutive hits, making it actually incredible at melting enemies in pve and pvp
just wanna say i love your content, it's informative and refreshingly to-the-point which i can definitely appreciate i was wondering if you might have some insight on how best to make cosplay builds emulating different enemies like knights, banished knights, crucible knights, etc. i'm currently doing a run where i'm using gear, ashes of war, and spells from the standard knight variants, and its a bit frustrating how all over the place my stats have to be, with high str requirements for the greatshields, plus 20 dex for the greatbow, plus enough faith for things like the leyndel knights' lightning incants, plus enough endurance to carry all the heavy armor and weapons

Thanks! The type of fantasy would be closer to stuff like Mistborn/Name of the Wind those kind of fantasy like one of the reviews suggested. I'll see if I can get amazon to allow a sneak peak. I think there should be the option! I wanted my job to be something that brings people joy, so I want to be a writer if possible and also make RUclips videos :) But this definitely is a rough journey, and I wish I can continue it instead of going to an office to crunch out numbers.

Greatswords are what I mainly used for my first playthrough, and it seems I chose well by coincidence! I two-handed the Heavy Banished Knight’s with a pure strength build until switching to dual-wielding Cold Irons for the endgame bosses
DMGS also benefits from Godfrey's Icon. Two R2's made for quite the "this isn't my sword" moment against Malenia. Lots of damage, guaranteed stagger if both fully charged attacks hit. My only complaint is that I'd rather have a better R2 moveset and have L2 do the current R2 combo, consuming FP on use. Also, trading with the L2 stab with the stupid high Rally in Bloodborne was more fun.
Alabaster Lord's Sword has a use, it has a high physical base damage and very little magical damage, which makes it favorable if youre fighting against a Faith build with barrier of gold buff if you dont want to cast law of regression. I use it as a backup on my helphens steeple build.
In my opinion moveset is everything, so that really narrows down which greatswords I'd be willing to use. Claymore is king simply because of the thrust attacks. Decent alternatives are the Knight's or Banished Knight's greatswords due to their unique R1's, and the Knight's has good range, but not the Inseperable Sword because sacred blade is lame. If you want bleed the Flamberge is solid enough, if you're a mage the Darkmoon Greatsword has really cool free projectiles and Helphen's Steeple has a cool weapon art, and if you're a faith build and just want to spam weapon arts the Blasphemous Blade or Sacred Relic Sword are good for PVE. I really don't think any of the others are really worth using unless you like the way they look, even if a couple of them do solid damage. But honestly, just use the Claymore.
I think it's a tradgedy that Alabaster and Onyx Greatswords don't have a follow-up attack tied to their version of Gravitas like Radahn's sword do. Alabaster would've been better with a follow-up sweep and Onyx with a charging (not charged) attack. It would've given them just a slight bit more oomph to make up for them being kinda shit. I'm a bit sad that you shit on Ordovis Greatsword. It's so good. Combined with Crucible Knight: Horn, it bullies the hell out of Melania. Horn knocks her in the air, fully-charged Vortex is mostly guarenteed and does a ton of damage while also Poise breaking super easily. Anytime I use this on Melania, If I land a charged Horn, I fully-charge Vortex, which almost guarantees a critical hit. I will admit, though, that I much prefer Ordovis's counterpart, Siluria's Tree. It's my favorite weapon in the game. It's just not a great weapon against Melania specifically.
Would be fun to see a (pve) poise break tierlist for weapon arts. I know everyone loves spamming flame of the redmanes but for max weapon art + crits it locks you into fire or str. Some arts like the straight sword charge seem to have similar poise break values and work with basically any stat spread so you can make your misericorde pretty flexible. The only other easy poise break art i know is the ice spear which due to limited scaling options poses some questions for max damage builds. Would love to see the poise break posture damage numbers for all the options.
Just wanted to mention that for high level (not pvp meta) builds, quality is often outperformed by blood infusion. That goes for all weapon classes. I have 60 str 57 dex and 55 arc. Most weapons have higher AR with quality. But there is always some weapon that takes really well to blood infusion and comes close to quality AR or even beats it (within the weapon class). For example, Iron Greatsword is the best with blood infusion for me. From straight swords, the Longsword has highest AR with quality but Broadsword with blood even beats that AR. In like half of the weapon classes it just happens that the same weapon that is best option for quality, is also the best option for blood. Blood also has the benefit of bleed buildup and pure physical damage. So I really recommend using blood for all weapon classes if you have high level character. Heavy weapons get 164 bleed I believe. So if you hit someone while powerstancing, they get 328 bleed buildup with one hit.
iron greatsword excels with bleed in my experience, I found that using the occult infusion with seppuku gave me some truly obnoxious damage without having to give up bleed proc
For weapons that have no native dex scaling at all, str/arc Occult will beat Quality at similar investments. Although I don't think any of those weapons have innate bleed.
@@IdToaster Yea, the weapons that have innate bleed, are not the best for blood infusion either, as they generally have lower base damage as a drawback. And blood infusion just replaces the innate bleed with a fixed amount. But Cross Naginata is an exception. As far as I know, it's the best spear for every infusion. Stat investment is one thing. But for high level builds you gotta consider being able to reach some soft caps in multiple stats. Like if a blood weapon scales C str, C dex and B arc, then some sort of 3-way soft cap build might be really good. But I'm not sure. Kinda wanna try something like 20/20/30 for blood build.
It's hard to praise From for the great strides they've made in fluid movesets (incorporating HEMA, etc.) and HQ, varied gear aesthetics when they lock most of a category to specific builds and completely ignoring practicality of other categories, like flails.
Darkmoon is cracked, I beat mohg first try while face tanking his nihil by just spamming charged heavy beams. Easily one of the most user friendly PvE weapons
So about the R2-R3 true combo.....Impaling Thrust counts as an combo starter or R1 #1 which is nice. Also, Impaling Thrust into an R2 has vastly reduced animation frames. I know everyone is obsessed with thrust R2s and is all like "if only KGS/BKGS had the R2 of the claymore" but after using them a while I like the fast R2s with the wide arc, especially with impaling thrust.
I know this video is old but if anyone is using or planning to use the Marais Executioner's Sword you're better off investing in STR instead of ARC since STR will boost physical damage much higher than ARC which gets you some magic damage but less physical one, which is actually not good because you want to avoid split damage.
Something that was omitted about the Alabaster Lord Sword: for some reason its R2s have a significant motion value buff. 8 extra MV on uncharged and 45 more on charged. If you focus on R2s this makes it a very potent PvE pick.
Good stuff. My next build is going to be strength, and I want to use Greatswords. Hopefully I won't be tempted by colossal GS as I have my eye on that trusty Claymore, but some of these others are sure to get some play.
I feel like Alabaster just screams to be powerstanced You pull the whole Enemy-group in and follow it up with the wide L1 great Swords have. And since you can find 2 in the Lands between you have 2 with the exact same Scaling

that sword of milos roar weapon art is just the standard barbaric roar weapon heavy moveset for all greatswords, and it retains having a follow up heavy that you didnt show in the video
Something about greatswords irks me in this game, it feels like they have more endlag than other weapons, at least on their 1h R1s. Edit: Well lucky me: their endlag was reduced for almost every attack in the latest patch, they feel way better to use now.

Awesome video, as usual. Can’t even imagine how much work it takes to prepare a video like this. Are you bothered by the fact that storm blade changes the attack pattern for the greatswords? If you spam storm blade the greatswords swing incredibly quickly and if the blade hits are incredibly powerful. For relatively little FP. Kind of makes regular R1 and R2s obsolete. As well as other AoW for heavy weapons. As well as most other weapon builds. Interestingly, the storm blade affinity is quality so I suppose if you do not have a quality build then storm blade will be less powerful. But the remarkable change in weapon movement will still be there.🤔
Love your analysis vids. But wrong on Ordovis great sword. The weapon art hits like an absolute truck. When fully charged, using shard and Godfrey's icon. Plus does massive poise damage. I can often stun lock bosses with it.

I know you've been noticing that Fire/Lightning sometimes get weird outliers (like Lightning Knight GS being underperforming compared to Banished Knight GS), and I figured out why the other day. Fire and Lightning damage aren't based on the normal scalings of the infused weapons, and in fact, they mirror each other (a 50/10 Fire Broadsword has the same physical damage as a 10/50 Lightning Broadsword, and their elemental damages match). I don't know exactly how they determine the scaling, but they're not super high anyway so weapons with higher base damage tend to come out on top. So you get stuff like the Bandit's Curved Sword normally being great with dex but the best choice for a fire infused CS, or str monsters like the Iron GS or Banished Knight GS in this vid topping the charts for lightning. If you click the scaling box on that spreadsheet and get the exact number amount, it's even easier to tell Fire and Lightning are equal but flipped.
Yep, they are mirror scalings of each other if you keep the stat investment consistent like I do. You will see that I often say lightning is basically the dex version of fire or if you're going to run a str weapon on dex it would be better to just run it on lightning (like in my hammer video for example).
@@Chrightt Yeah, str weapons are losing less AR running Lightning since Fire str scaling is terrible compared to Heavy. It's really nice, though, on weapons that have that nice base damage but don't have super high requirements (like the Bandit CS only needs 13 dex for Fire). Like I'm sure Lightning Giant-Crusher hits like a truck, but that 40 str just to 2H it is.... ow.
I wish I had used the Blasphemous Blade sooner. I had no idea what the sword did till only recently while going against Radagon and Elden Beast, and was confused why I had gained so much HP after being brought to near death.
When I finally tried using it along with my Mimic, we just double-teamed Malenia down in an extremely controllable fashion. The WA is an easy to use fire damage floor stripe with high poise-breaking. Which hurts the vast majority of enemies in the game. And has massive buff-stacking potential. AND self-healing!
@@chriskelvin248 It certainly helps that Malenia's poise is so paper thin. And the self healing is freakishly high. I had the sword all this time during my first playthrough, but only decided to use it at the end of my third playthrough. Would've been nice to use for my fights with Malenia.
Helphen's Steeple is also pretty cool for double-buffing your greatswords. Double the status buildup and damage, but more importantly also triple the fashion! There aren't that many ways to viably buff both your weapons in this game, and dual-wielding Helphen's Steeple is one of the few that works!
@@nathreetimesnineequalstwen7172 You two-hand your left-handed weapon, then use the weapon art. Then, use the weapon art in your right hand. Same buff, both hands! You can do the same thing with any weapon that has a weapon art-based weapon buff, like the Eclipse Shotels!

So if I understand this correctly, when comparing Knight's GS vs Banished Knight's GS, if I were to two-hand one of them and invest points into either Dexterity or Strength, Banished Knight's GS would pull even further ahead in AR cause of the additional bonus to strength from two-handing, right? So apart from the range, the main reason to pick Knight's GS is if I already happen to have a Dex build and looking to try a GS without respeccing? Thanks a lot of these breakdown videos btw, all the info you share/explain makes everything a lot more interesting!
I don't think writing off blasphemous blade was good, I think it doesn't have enough analysis in pvp even if it might end up "too slow" It does ubsurd ar even if dual scaling with the right build too
If you the Blasphemous' AR in my video and compare it you will see that it does not have a higher AR than other dual scaling options. If you split investment into str/dex instead of faith after 50 faith more more AR, it still has less AR than the Sacred Relic which is also longer. I also don't think giving up a weapon art slot (and no, it might land on some randoms but the % chance it'll land is definitely low) for a tad bit more AR is worth it.

Question! If I want to power stance the knights great sword, should I use keen or heavy. I sometimes like to 2 hand the weapon and enjoy the extra 50% strength buff.
After watching, I'm sad that the Lordsworn's scored so poorly. It's my favourite looking greatsword in the game and was hoping it would fair better. Still, I guess it at least gets to feel superior to the Loretta's Sickle build I never even finished theorycrafting...
Lordsworn is perfectly fine for PvE because it legitimately has the highest ripostes among greatswords to use with Flame of the Redmanes. The AR deficit on regular hits is small enough that you're probably still able to kill minor enemies in the same number of hits. It's only slightly behind Misericorde in a Fire or Flame Art infusion because of the AR difference, too, and has a much better basic moveset. There are some mitigating factors such as which riposte you do, exactly (big enemy or humanoid). Basically, I think it's a perfectly serviceable weapon for Flame of the Redmanes PvE specifically, being the best Greatsword to spam it with, and one of the top weapons with it in general along with Misericorde, Executioner's Greataxe, and Guts' Greatsword. Also, it's available early, and you don't have to farm for it, which gives it an edge over Iron/Knight for this specific niche in my opinion.

The Helphen steeple only has 10 more frost then the DMGS and has 0 when it's not buffed, the DMGS has 55 frost even when not buffed and 70 when buffed. And with the 60 second vs 30 second buff I think the DMGS has so many advantages over the Helphens that I can never find any reason to use it instead.

DMGS after casting weapon art loses the heavy attack. It only has the sword beam, so you can't hit with both the sword itself and the sword beam.

My biggest problem with From's weapon balancing is that they often put in weapons that are just straight inferior to something else. An example from this video would be Forked vs Flamberge. Other than fashion, there is no reason to ever use Forked over Flamberge.

I know it's one of the worst ones, but I have a soft spot for the Lordsworn GS, I just like it aesthetically and like that it's the only GS class weapon with higher than 100 crit modifier, at 110. Probably ties to the build I used it on, ran it on a faith build because I didnt need any dexterity investment beyond base 10 prophet begins with, with flame art infusion and Flame of the Redmanes skill. Staggered enemies enough that the higher critical modifier came into play quite a lot.
And the best part is, you get it EARLY, as in before you get your second site of grace early.
Not only that, but it's also the legendary weapon used by Rick, Soldier of God himself!

I used to shit on the Knight's/Banished Knight's GS for not having a thrust r2. But after just finding out their jump r1/backstep/r2 combos into another r1, I'm convinced these are good and slept on. With glintblade phalanx and cold infusion, you can basically decide when to stunlock your opponent.

Yeah, I didn't know those were true combos! Anything with a true combo is at least worth looking into. They're not going to be meta, but having a decent reward for hitting certain attacks is at least pretty fun!

I don't know if it's because of latency but my jumping R1s really don't true combo into R1. Even for the R2, it's only the fully charged one that combos and not the regular one. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong cause I'm perplexed to say the least

@12:00 Minor point of correction, the GOGS is implied to be reforged version of Rennala's wedding sword, not Ranni's DMGS, so going by Rennala's titles the GOGS's original sword name would be something like "The Full Moon Greatsword" but we never get confirmation that Ranni isn't somehow breaking tradition with her marriage sword design and name beyond the GOGS weapon art and style similarities.

The Banished Knight's has higher AR on most of the infusions though :) It is a preference thing whether you want the range or the AR (unless it is keen/cold where Knight's definitely wins).

I have and always will love the Bastard Sword no matter what. It's the best looking sword. No excess adornment and ornamental engravings. Just pure functionality. I think it is actually a contender to the Iron Greatsword, as it is lighter and more accessible, as it is very fast and easy to obtain. The AR differences at the highest levels don't always make the heaviest most base damaging weapon the best. Builds can be very complicated, and having low weight and requirements makes it easier to make a versatile build. If you're trying to make a light roll build that uses a Greatsword, you might want to try pick up a Bastard Sword, or more usually the Claymore, instead of Iron Greatsword. Iron Greatsword is the end game min max non-somber heavy weapon.
Why alabaster gs is great :
It is the lightest in its class and consumes MUCH LESS STAMINA in all hits, almost twice as many hits with the same stamina
the second charged r2 has THE SECOND HIGHEST STAGGER AND MOTION VALUE (which makes the damage astronomically greater) IN THE ENTIRE GAME (more than colossal weapons), second only to greathammers
Unlike the video, Ash of War deals 80% PHYSICAL DAMAGE and 20% magical (not just magical) and has an area of effect larger than gravitas and hits through walls
Tbh it’s really frustrating how many greatswords there are compared to say straight swords. Especially when so many of the greatswords like the Alabaster Lord’s Sword just look like straight swords that were scaled up to greatsword size. Unique move sets and weapon arts help different weapons feel unique, but nothing beats using a whole new weapon class - and when it comes to multiple playthroughs, I don’t want to just be using a great sword every damn time.
There are 18 straight swords. Also a lot 😂
@@Chrightt My bad, I did not word my comment very well. There are a bunch of straight swords, but almost all of them share exactly the same or almost the same move set and have no unique properties. Aka for those swords it really comes down to a DPS battle; and going off your video on them, it seems like the Broadsword works out as hands-down the best sword for nearly all infusions - at least the physical ones. It’s a shame that unless you push dexterity to its absolute limit, the Broadsword still beats out nearly every other straight sword for Sharp infusion, and still infuses way better with Heavy.
With greatswords, it seems like even the ones that lag behind in DPS often make up for it with a unique mechanic or moveset. Whereas it seems like the niche straight swords generally aren’t that remarkable or viable compared to the niche greatswords. I would have much preferred there be best in slot options for all infusions, or more unique move sets. I will forever lament only the short sword having the 2hR2 thrust that’s been in all the Dark Souls games 😢

Iron Greatsword may be the best among the standard regulars, but it is very annoying to farm. So the next best thing is the Gargoyle's Greatsword, which you are guaranteed to get one per game cycle... provided that you go and defeat the namesake boss. Maybe it's just me, but I reeeeeeally hate farming, especially if it's so annoying to do like Iron Greatsword, so I personally would rather settle and be happy with the 2nd best, just to save me some headache... lol. x)
Worthwhile to mention that Helphen's Steeple Buff also is an attack which you can weave into your attacks. Just like with Onyx Blade in DS3.

What's frustrating is seeing places like Fextralife where people will go "correct" the data back to something wrong simply because it was correctly fixed to match videos like this. It really favors the groups that pump out rough early data that doesn't track when under scrutiny than it does legitimate testing and calculation.
It's one reason I wasn't quick to rush my first character to the "you better play at 150+ meta level" line like everyone else was on release. There's just too much data to make such a rash decision so early.

Gotta disagree with you on the Sacred Relic over the Golden Order. At least for PvE. Let's be honest. They will mostly be used as spell sticks that also happen to have sharp edges. Both have a nice, long-range holy wave attack. And nothing farms pondering Albinaurics faster than SRS because the width and distance of the wave are massive. But it also only affects targets standing in it and terrain bumps will have a blocking effect. The GOG's wave has shorter range and narrower width, but it can hit elevated targets too. But ALSO, the GOG WA is a two-parter- the first part is a mid AoE stagger/ flinch that you can set up and control enemies with. AND you don't have to use the second part, as you just press the WA button once for the stagger, time the second press after for the wave. It has a LOT more utility and fp economy in this respect. Short range save/ control, or hit close some enemies and then some farther enemies with the same moveset.
You need to pay FP on both parts of the cast, so in order to get a ranged attack half as strong, you need to pay roughly the same FP cost. The initial AoE burst around you also takes quite a long time to cast. While it is possible to be blocked by terrain, it mostly has a good register as you can see from casting the sword wave on the stairs. It will still go up/down staircase whereas GoG can technically just have the sword wave run into the stairs with a poor angle or fly too high and miss everything below it.
Personally speaking, I just don't cast GoG expecting myself to take a hit in order to knock enemies back. I'd just run out of range in the same amount of time it takes for the skill to go off, or if they're weak mobs that can get staggered I can just swing the greatsword itself. With a slight bit of distance created, relic just wipes. Also, since it is a faith build, you can also use wrath of gold (which is a faster incantation) if it is the AoE damage you need. While I do understand that there are rare occasions like flying monsters where GoG can perform better, I find that far and few in between to require 4x the amount of cast time for the full WA to pop off.

i only run greatswords on my main character becuase i'm very familiar with their movesets. before picking up the flamberge and blasphemous and powerstancing, i was a diehard knight's greatsword user. this video was very informative, well-made, and cohesive. i use the flamberge with a cold infusion because its procs do massive poise damage as well as regular damage. in NG+ i picked up another and used a fire infusion because AR. it is my favorite greatsword.

I'd like to point out that Ordovis' Greatsword is actually a beast of a weapon. You don't use it for the huge damage or something. It's actualy a stance breaking machine. One charged weapon art can break stances of many enemies. One charge and two heavy attacks for bosses. Then you again chain the weapon art as you can push its damage very, very high.

HI. Great analysis once again. One note though.
Looking at Blood and Occult, at 45,16,45 (86 investment) you get 619 AR and 131 bleed from the blood iron greatsword, while at 16, 16, 80 (82 investment) you get 651AR and 112 bleed from occult flamberge. IMO it's better for bleed builds to go with blood iron greatsword, despite the slightly lover AR as you get more bleed but also you get to do it with more balanced stat spread allowing for more deserve options. That is a rather unique situation for bleed builds that I think deserves an extra note at the end when talking about bleed weapons, as usually occult weapons with innate bleed are far better then the blood infused options. :)
Unfortunately, i think most bleed builds are just going to slap seppuku on an occult flamberge anyway, and not have to choose between AR and bleed buildup at all. Sad that one weapon art completely defines an entire archetype of builds
I wish that the helphen steeple, blasphemous blade and golden order greatsword would've been intelligence and faith weapons. You all know about the first one; for the second one, gelmir sorceries require more intelligence than faith, Rykard's rancor requiring even 40/18, so I don't understand why this weapon is not atleast an A/C scaling weapon for int and faith; for the third, well, it literally says "golden order" in the title, and the description says that is made out of light, so I don't understand why it's not like the coded sword or cyphred (?) pata, that do weild basically nothing, have no requirements outside of faith and do only holy damage (wich is pretty bad, but that's another discussion), so I just wish this weapon would've had an A/A scaling with int and faith. These builds got so "nerfed" in this game, I don't understand why fromsoftware doesn't like them.

Also, holy damage is terrible in PVE, but in PVP it is actually better than fire damage. Fire resistence scales with vigor and any decent player will have high vigor, meaning they will also have high fire resistence.
Totally understand your point, although I think Blasphemous suits pure faith quite well.
The reason they are not int/faith weapons is because of how scaling works. Each stat has an associated damage type. Physical scales of strength and/or dexterity. Magic from int. Fire and holy from faith. And lightning from dexterity. You will never find a weapon that does magic damage and scales of faith, or a fire weapon that scales from int. The coded sword scales only from faith, because it only does holy damage. If it had physical damage, then it would also scale from strenght or dexterity. This is why there are "so many" weapons that scale from faith, because faith covers 2 damage types. The only weapon that has int/faith scaling is the sword of night and flame, and it's because it does fire (faith) and magic (int) damage.
And just in case someone tells me, "but the lava sorceries do fire damage and they scale of int". No they don't. They scale of your staff, which can scale of anything depending of the staff itself.

I think it's important to note that the DMGS weapon skill also deals incredible amounts of stance damage, so you can stagger enemies while staying at a safe distance.

Ordovis gets the buff from the talisman that boosts your damage after consecutive hits, making it actually incredible at melting enemies in pve and pvp

i was wondering if you might have some insight on how best to make cosplay builds emulating different enemies like knights, banished knights, crucible knights, etc. i'm currently doing a run where i'm using gear, ashes of war, and spells from the standard knight variants, and its a bit frustrating how all over the place my stats have to be, with high str requirements for the greatshields, plus 20 dex for the greatbow, plus enough faith for things like the leyndel knights' lightning incants, plus enough endurance to carry all the heavy armor and weapons

Greatswords are what I mainly used for my first playthrough, and it seems I chose well by coincidence! I two-handed the Heavy Banished Knight’s with a pure strength build until switching to dual-wielding Cold Irons for the endgame bosses

It's honestly dumb that only the claymore have a poke while everything else got sweeps
DMGS also benefits from Godfrey's Icon. Two R2's made for quite the "this isn't my sword" moment against Malenia. Lots of damage, guaranteed stagger if both fully charged attacks hit. My only complaint is that I'd rather have a better R2 moveset and have L2 do the current R2 combo, consuming FP on use. Also, trading with the L2 stab with the stupid high Rally in Bloodborne was more fun.
Alabaster Lord's Sword has a use, it has a high physical base damage and very little magical damage, which makes it favorable if youre fighting against a Faith build with barrier of gold buff if you dont want to cast law of regression. I use it as a backup on my helphens steeple build.
I just like to powerstance them as it is the lightest greatsword and you can get two of them in one save file (without a friend dropping one off)

Quality Knight's Greatsword with the Lion's Claw ash of war basically carried me through NG+, with Black Fireball doing the rest
In my opinion moveset is everything, so that really narrows down which greatswords I'd be willing to use. Claymore is king simply because of the thrust attacks. Decent alternatives are the Knight's or Banished Knight's greatswords due to their unique R1's, and the Knight's has good range, but not the Inseperable Sword because sacred blade is lame. If you want bleed the Flamberge is solid enough, if you're a mage the Darkmoon Greatsword has really cool free projectiles and Helphen's Steeple has a cool weapon art, and if you're a faith build and just want to spam weapon arts the Blasphemous Blade or Sacred Relic Sword are good for PVE. I really don't think any of the others are really worth using unless you like the way they look, even if a couple of them do solid damage.
But honestly, just use the Claymore.
Claymore isn't good, Knight's greatsword is the best, Banished too, but shorter. The claymore thrust is nothing like it was in ds3

I think it's a tradgedy that Alabaster and Onyx Greatswords don't have a follow-up attack tied to their version of Gravitas like Radahn's sword do. Alabaster would've been better with a follow-up sweep and Onyx with a charging (not charged) attack. It would've given them just a slight bit more oomph to make up for them being kinda shit.
I'm a bit sad that you shit on Ordovis Greatsword. It's so good. Combined with Crucible Knight: Horn, it bullies the hell out of Melania. Horn knocks her in the air, fully-charged Vortex is mostly guarenteed and does a ton of damage while also Poise breaking super easily. Anytime I use this on Melania, If I land a charged Horn, I fully-charge Vortex, which almost guarantees a critical hit. I will admit, though, that I much prefer Ordovis's counterpart, Siluria's Tree. It's my favorite weapon in the game. It's just not a great weapon against Melania specifically.

Would be fun to see a (pve) poise break tierlist for weapon arts.
I know everyone loves spamming flame of the redmanes but for max weapon art + crits it locks you into fire or str. Some arts like the straight sword charge seem to have similar poise break values and work with basically any stat spread so you can make your misericorde pretty flexible. The only other easy poise break art i know is the ice spear which due to limited scaling options poses some questions for max damage builds. Would love to see the poise break posture damage numbers for all the options.

Just wanted to mention that for high level (not pvp meta) builds, quality is often outperformed by blood infusion. That goes for all weapon classes. I have 60 str 57 dex and 55 arc. Most weapons have higher AR with quality. But there is always some weapon that takes really well to blood infusion and comes close to quality AR or even beats it (within the weapon class). For example, Iron Greatsword is the best with blood infusion for me. From straight swords, the Longsword has highest AR with quality but Broadsword with blood even beats that AR. In like half of the weapon classes it just happens that the same weapon that is best option for quality, is also the best option for blood. Blood also has the benefit of bleed buildup and pure physical damage. So I really recommend using blood for all weapon classes if you have high level character. Heavy weapons get 164 bleed I believe. So if you hit someone while powerstancing, they get 328 bleed buildup with one hit.
iron greatsword excels with bleed in my experience, I found that using the occult infusion with seppuku gave me some truly obnoxious damage without having to give up bleed proc
For weapons that have no native dex scaling at all, str/arc Occult will beat Quality at similar investments. Although I don't think any of those weapons have innate bleed.

And blood infusion just replaces the innate bleed with a fixed amount. But Cross Naginata is an exception. As far as I know, it's the best spear for every infusion. Stat investment is one thing. But for high level builds you gotta consider being able to reach some soft caps in multiple stats. Like if a blood weapon scales C str, C dex and B arc, then some sort of 3-way soft cap build might be really good. But I'm not sure. Kinda wanna try something like 20/20/30 for blood build.

It's hard to praise From for the great strides they've made in fluid movesets (incorporating HEMA, etc.) and HQ, varied gear aesthetics when they lock most of a category to specific builds and completely ignoring practicality of other categories, like flails.
Also, can we talk about why the claymore sheath is 20% too small?
You could say that, given it has the highest number of options, it is the GREATest category.

So about the R2-R3 true combo.....Impaling Thrust counts as an combo starter or R1 #1 which is nice. Also, Impaling Thrust into an R2 has vastly reduced animation frames. I know everyone is obsessed with thrust R2s and is all like "if only KGS/BKGS had the R2 of the claymore" but after using them a while I like the fast R2s with the wide arc, especially with impaling thrust.

I know this video is old but if anyone is using or planning to use the Marais Executioner's Sword you're better off investing in STR instead of ARC since STR will boost physical damage much higher than ARC which gets you some magic damage but less physical one, which is actually not good because you want to avoid split damage.
Something that was omitted about the Alabaster Lord Sword: for some reason its R2s have a significant motion value buff. 8 extra MV on uncharged and 45 more on charged. If you focus on R2s this makes it a very potent PvE pick.

that sword of milos roar weapon art is just the standard barbaric roar weapon heavy moveset for all greatswords, and it retains having a follow up heavy that you didnt show in the video
Something about greatswords irks me in this game, it feels like they have more endlag than other weapons, at least on their 1h R1s.
Edit: Well lucky me: their endlag was reduced for almost every attack in the latest patch, they feel way better to use now.

Are you bothered by the fact that storm blade changes the attack pattern for the greatswords? If you spam storm blade the greatswords swing incredibly quickly and if the blade hits are incredibly powerful. For relatively little FP. Kind of makes regular R1 and R2s obsolete. As well as other AoW for heavy weapons. As well as most other weapon builds.
Interestingly, the storm blade affinity is quality so I suppose if you do not have a quality build then storm blade will be less powerful. But the remarkable change in weapon movement will still be there.🤔
Love your analysis vids. But wrong on Ordovis great sword. The weapon art hits like an absolute truck. When fully charged, using shard and Godfrey's icon. Plus does massive poise damage. I can often stun lock bosses with it.
You say the Marais ES' magic damage increases with Arcane, but does this hold true for the EDB skill? And is there anywhere I can find this sort of data for other weapons? As the wiki does not always go into this kind of detail

I know you've been noticing that Fire/Lightning sometimes get weird outliers (like Lightning Knight GS being underperforming compared to Banished Knight GS), and I figured out why the other day.
Fire and Lightning damage aren't based on the normal scalings of the infused weapons, and in fact, they mirror each other (a 50/10 Fire Broadsword has the same physical damage as a 10/50 Lightning Broadsword, and their elemental damages match).
I don't know exactly how they determine the scaling, but they're not super high anyway so weapons with higher base damage tend to come out on top. So you get stuff like the Bandit's Curved Sword normally being great with dex but the best choice for a fire infused CS, or str monsters like the Iron GS or Banished Knight GS in this vid topping the charts for lightning.
If you click the scaling box on that spreadsheet and get the exact number amount, it's even easier to tell Fire and Lightning are equal but flipped.
Yep, they are mirror scalings of each other if you keep the stat investment consistent like I do. You will see that I often say lightning is basically the dex version of fire or if you're going to run a str weapon on dex it would be better to just run it on lightning (like in my hammer video for example).
@@Chrightt Yeah, str weapons are losing less AR running Lightning since Fire str scaling is terrible compared to Heavy.
It's really nice, though, on weapons that have that nice base damage but don't have super high requirements (like the Bandit CS only needs 13 dex for Fire). Like I'm sure Lightning Giant-Crusher hits like a truck, but that 40 str just to 2H it is.... ow.
I wish I had used the Blasphemous Blade sooner. I had no idea what the sword did till only recently while going against Radagon and Elden Beast, and was confused why I had gained so much HP after being brought to near death.
When I finally tried using it along with my Mimic, we just double-teamed Malenia down in an extremely controllable fashion. The WA is an easy to use fire damage floor stripe with high poise-breaking. Which hurts the vast majority of enemies in the game. And has massive buff-stacking potential. AND self-healing!
@@chriskelvin248 It certainly helps that Malenia's poise is so paper thin. And the self healing is freakishly high. I had the sword all this time during my first playthrough, but only decided to use it at the end of my third playthrough. Would've been nice to use for my fights with Malenia.
Helphen's Steeple is also pretty cool for double-buffing your greatswords. Double the status buildup and damage, but more importantly also triple the fashion! There aren't that many ways to viably buff both your weapons in this game, and dual-wielding Helphen's Steeple is one of the few that works!

Same buff, both hands! You can do the same thing with any weapon that has a weapon art-based weapon buff, like the Eclipse Shotels!

So if I understand this correctly, when comparing Knight's GS vs Banished Knight's GS, if I were to two-hand one of them and invest points into either Dexterity or Strength, Banished Knight's GS would pull even further ahead in AR cause of the additional bonus to strength from two-handing, right? So apart from the range, the main reason to pick Knight's GS is if I already happen to have a Dex build and looking to try a GS without respeccing? I don't think writing off blasphemous blade was good, I think it doesn't have enough analysis in pvp even if it might end up "too slow"
It does ubsurd ar even if dual scaling with the right build too
If you the Blasphemous' AR in my video and compare it you will see that it does not have a higher AR than other dual scaling options. If you split investment into str/dex instead of faith after 50 faith more more AR, it still has less AR than the Sacred Relic which is also longer. I also don't think giving up a weapon art slot (and no, it might land on some randoms but the % chance it'll land is definitely low) for a tad bit more AR is worth it.

Question! If I want to power stance the knights great sword, should I use keen or heavy. I sometimes like to 2 hand the weapon and enjoy the extra 50% strength buff.

After watching, I'm sad that the Lordsworn's scored so poorly. It's my favourite looking greatsword in the game and was hoping it would fair better. Still, I guess it at least gets to feel superior to the Loretta's Sickle build I never even finished theorycrafting...
Lordsworn is perfectly fine for PvE because it legitimately has the highest ripostes among greatswords to use with Flame of the Redmanes. The AR deficit on regular hits is small enough that you're probably still able to kill minor enemies in the same number of hits.
It's only slightly behind Misericorde in a Fire or Flame Art infusion because of the AR difference, too, and has a much better basic moveset. There are some mitigating factors such as which riposte you do, exactly (big enemy or humanoid).
Basically, I think it's a perfectly serviceable weapon for Flame of the Redmanes PvE specifically, being the best Greatsword to spam it with, and one of the top weapons with it in general along with Misericorde, Executioner's Greataxe, and Guts' Greatsword.
Also, it's available early, and you don't have to farm for it, which gives it an edge over Iron/Knight for this specific niche in my opinion.
Nothing ever quite as sad as the Loretta's....

The Helphen steeple only has 10 more frost then the DMGS and has 0 when it's not buffed, the DMGS has 55 frost even when not buffed and 70 when buffed.
And with the 60 second vs 30 second buff I think the DMGS has so many advantages over the Helphens that I can never find any reason to use it instead.
