Same here. Less stress and I've been following along drawing with the streams for 20 days now. I can feel an improvement in my technique and speed when drawing.
i would say they go hand to hand. When you are learning the fundamentals like shapes/ primitive shapes you should be using ref and looking at other artist who done it right and learn why it works. You cant draw something if you dont know how it looks or how it works.

I wanted to know if learning the basics like anatomy, proportions something I have to do first, or can I start by looking at the image/reference, then put the reference away and try to draw as much as I can remember? But you are saying I should learn the fundamentals first, then do this exercise?
