I was a 46 year old Business Manager with no business to manage; I was drinking too much and ready to throw my life away. Welding literally saved my life.
I am a PhD Chemical Engineer and I hate working for the big pharmaceutical companies and its even worse everywhere else. I am starting a Mobile Welding/Fabrication along with Masonry restoration business. My best friend is a Master mason and a pretty good welder. We are restoring all the stone walls and flagstone patios on a 200 year old estate along with metal fences and railings. We started picking up vintage vending machines because his father owned a vending business and he is a whiz repairing the really cool old machines. We are just starting because 18 months ago I was run over by a F350 on my antique Harley and left for dead on the side of the road. I realized I want to be happy with what I am doing from here on out.

I’m 18 got my LLC and started my welding business, struggling now to just find time to sleep😂. So much contract work going on for welders I had to bring in a few friends of mine. Working on expanding to greater levels

I been a welder since high school and have had the same blessing as you. Times will get tough but you always have something to fall back on and then rebuild. I'm getting back on the horse and starting a welding company again after some tough times. This time I got a bus I'm riggin up with all my tools and welder.
Great video, Trevor! My buddy and I work for a company that is in the custom railing and custom office furniture business. We love what we do (he is the lead fabricator in our steel shop and I am in project management/installation), but with where the company is going and ownership not treating employees super well, we are in the conceptual stages of starting our own thing on the side while we still work full time. Our goal is to develop the side hustle into something full time so we can win back our time, do things we love, and make what we're worth so we can better take care of our families.
I would love to say running a business can win you time, give you the time to do what you love and make you what you are worth. At times it is quite the opposite. Right now you are an operator, once you become a business owner most, if not all of your waking moments will be spent working in the business. That is if you run a good business. It is NOT easy and not for the weak. I’ve given up everything I love to do in trade to grow my business. At times I don’t make any money but at times I do win and that’s when it is worth it. Don’t let the internet make you believe running a business is easy. It’s not by any means. But it is possible and it is a grind. Everyday. So be ready, it’s a drastic jump to go from operator to business owner.

Getting screwed over by an employer who doesn't treat you well or truly wants what's best for you is worst than all the heartache and difficulty of being your own boss. You're giving them your time and the fruits of your labor are never recognized. Times this by 40-60 years and you have NOTHING to show for your body of work and what you have put in. The risk is worth it to me.

A wise person told me if I was going to be successful in business I should learn a trade and mature . You have matured fast. Another wise person told me you should not need to borrow money to start a business. If you have a skill and work hard you can build from the ground up. You will really know and appreciate it if you have all the experiences. Another wise person told me that many businesses fail due to cash flow. Managing cash flow is integral. It is the time tested key to being a business. I would say you have someone who manages the accounting. Few people are willing to take the risk. fewer people can endure the struggle without being over come. KUDOS to you and who ever is with you on this journey.

Thank you for posting this video, i own a small welding business and did most everything my self from bidding to taxes and building the jobs, and it was extremely hard and seems like i could never make enough money ect no matter how hard i worked or how many hours i put in. i ended up needing help on a job and a friend sent over a guy who had just started his own small repair business and from there we started helping each other out on each others jobs, and things started getting more steady and a little easier. currently there are 3 of us and we are far from over the hill but it is so much better than going it alone, having other people with your same drive and passion and most importantly have different skills and talents than you do make business much easier. we often talk about getting into mfg but we still kinda struggle with how to do it. i have several ideas id like to produce but i am unsure how to patent them with out taking loans. its kinda refreshing to see someone who has been in a similar place and have made it over the hill, Congrats on your success and thanks for sharing your story
I bought a welder and taught myself to weld by watching RUclips. It has been a game changer in my hobby (automotive) and in my life doing jobs for others. Wish I would’ve dived in sooner (I’m 35 now).

Been there, done that. Started a Heavy Duty Truck Repair business on a unemployment check in 1981 due to the Ronald Regan recession of fighting inflation. What you are saying about having a skill is right on as to being able to have stability and security as to providing for a family. I am only a service not a manufacture as you hence a vast difference in wealth. But your message as to acquiring skills which can't be outsourced would make Mike Rowe proud.
A welding machine is a money printer! Especially a mobile rig. I welded a bunch in highschool and went to welding school after that. But when i got out of welding school the pipeline crashed and the pipeliners took all the other welding jobs in my area. I ended up going to work with my dad at his framing and drywall company. Ended up getting comfortable there and have been there ever sense. I did purchase a mobile welding rig with the full intention of getting back to welding asap. But it didn’t go that way unfortunately. Im not passionate at all about drywall lol so every day is a drain for me. I hate it. But occasionally the opportunity to weld on a jobsite comes up and i get so into it and i make sure everything is perfect. I have come to realize that welding is what i do best and what im happy doing. I plan on making my own company and achieving my own success. I already have what i need. Its just hard moving away from stable income
@@sigridqwq5198 go out and get some work. People pay good money if you have a mobile rig. I have been cleaning up on tractor bit repairs and fencing. Just gotta get your name out there. I got my first big fencing job, it was a big ass entrance for a long horn rancher. 7” posts and 5 runs of 2 7/8 1/4” wall pipe. Did that shit all my myself and people kept seeing me working driving by and stopping to get my info. Now i keep getting repair calls and stuff. Just gotta get out there and work your ass off then you build a reputation. Repairs are the best for me because im $150 an hr with a 1 hr minimum. So if it takes me 15 minutes im still getting $150. If you really want it then take it serious. I have learned that reputation is everything. I didn’t make that much on that big fence but it has kept paying because of the word of mouth and the rancher wants me on atleast 2 other projects. He actually had a different welder but he got booked up so he gave me a shot and now im his welder for when he needs things. Just keep plugging away and that welder will make you a shit load
Fantastic story for people that don’t know any better. No question that welding is a great trade as that I have a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing and numerous certifications for many different areas of welding. Chances of making it to a million dollar welding business in completely unrealistic. If you want be successful in that industry I would suggest getting all your certifications and college degree in science, engineering is more realistic in this world because only hard work and determination pays off. Great introductory video on the subject!
You must be the type of person that needs certifications and degrees for validation. Most of these guys do not. It would be great if people like yourself. Would stop trying to crush others. Good luck as an employee.
I started welding as a hobby! I tough myself. I learned a lot from family and friends in the business. During my career, I was involved in a head on collision with a drunk driver. I was seriously injured, forcing me to make some life changes... Thank God, the organization I was employed with was willing to relocate me and give me the welding shop! The top boss knew I had the skills needed. I can't tell you how happy I am for learning a SKILL!!
congrats on your journey! I enjoyed your story. I started my journey over a year ago. Went to school. Got a job in production making cattle chutes. Then moved into ventilation systems. Learned alot and enjoyed alot. I also have a bit of experience in business so I was hoping to eventually discover something during this journey that I could possibly get into. I currently just lost my ventilation job and currently looking for new opportunities and I am really seeking maybe get into business with welding but since I am a city boy. Its harder to get permit and permission because of the noise cant just work in the yard. So I need to look into getting a small shop for starting or just get a welder and a truck like you. But ideally I'd like to either start to do custom sub contract work to build it up to manufacturing. I think thats where my passion is taking me.
Hey bud don’t know how to get a hold of you but my biggest problem with welding is finding work I just opened up my own welding shop and I have problems selling the things I build and can’t find work to do I shouldn’t have to beg people to give me work you’d think run a add and they’d call you I’m starting out building trailers on a moth going to start there so if you have any ideas on finding work please let me know love what you do keep it up brother thanks
I’m on this path right now three years on my own grinding to earn that breakout of what I would consider success. For me it was surrounding myself with people through my talent’s. having a friend that owns a construction company helped me I stepped in and started repairing all their broken stuff with quality and efficiency spread to hey I know a guy that needs this or needs that after countless hours working nights and weekends I was able to make the jump and leave my old job. I also rooted myself in a niche doing heavy equipment repair(there’s very few around that do it and less that do it right) it takes time or just meeting the right person but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I just completed a 200 hour cnc class because I wanted to learn about it. The welders were in the next room welding, so I was wondering about welding too. I am much older though - 61

I’m 31 and interested in becoming a welder in OKC. Can’t afford the $7000 for welding school and my high school didn’t offer any sort life skill classes.
Go apply at some local welding shops. There are lots in OKC. Start at the bottom and go in and work hard- at that point they would be happy to train you.

The thing you did not touch on at all; is the ability to charge the customer, the right amount of money for a project. This to me is the most difficult thing. You can be good in whatever field; welding, driving, construction, baking, photography, auto mechanic, writing, etc,… but it won’t succeed unless you can get paid the right amount. And saying things, like building stuff for your mom, and building things with your brothers, does not explain how you got money for doing those kinds of things. Sounds to me that you were extremely lucky in the beginning, and did indeed get tremendous assistance from others. Still tho, Good job! Keep it going. Because a lot of us got helped a lot too, and still failed.
This was my story on how it all started. It's not a step by step on how I created my business and how to charge customers. I'd say there was luck involved but it was also thousands of hours of hard work, treating people right, being honest, showing up everyday, learning and staying focused that lead my company to what it is today.
I am with you, I got tired of working out of town ,being gone all the time, having my shit stolen while I was out of town, cashed in my 401-k, payed the taxes and penalties started my own business, I had all the tools and skill been welding for almost 30 years, I hit the ground running things was going great, THEN one morning I could not get my breath.... now I am on disability!!!! but I am still a live,,, still pick up a little side work but still don't know how much to charge people I know... thinks for sharing . If money is tight I would recommend going to work for a welding shop and start at the bottom and eventually work your way up. Just let them know you strongly desire to be a welder and if you have the right attitude and work ethic they will train you for free. In my company we train anyone to weld with the right attitude starting on day one. That’s my two sense. Hope it helps!

Looking for welding works, 3 welders are, they re out of works, is there recession going on in toronto around in ontario? Is the war keeping us living dead trap? we do railing, doors, garden design, fences, gayes, bracket of custom designs. Parts, auto, and special projects. Now almost 1 - 2 jobs with small qty. I took a cnc course at a local vocational school. We were training right next to the welders . They even had some female welders in the class. I was thinking about signing up for the welding class next for $5000. I am 61 years old
@@tbugofficial It's been a few months since I touched a cnc machine. I have seen jobs where they offer to train you. I suppose I could do it. I used to maintain printers onsite. A printer job is one of the few I can walk onto a site confident and ask for work.
what a nice guy, i've been working as a assistant to this older welder. The guy is miserable. grumpy all the time and won't teach me anything. Fortunatly the owner allow me to pratice with the company tig welder. i practice it during my breaks and lunches, slowly my welds are starting to look decent. in a year or 2 i'm gonna leave and find a company with nicer people to learn from.

Hello, I'm great! I would start in your area. Go around to all the welding/steel shops to see if anyone is hiring. With the experience you say you have you should not have a problem finding work.
Learning to weld changed my life. At 19 years old I started at $15.22 in 2005 as a first year apprentice. I parlayed that job into one with an oil company and now usually do between 150k-160k a year. I know its not millions and I know guys doing more, but for me its a great living. If you're a kid that really doesn't like conventional school and likes working with your hands get out there and learn to weld by any means necessary.
One of the secrets to having a successful business is to live in the states. If you live in Canada it is extremely difficult to do this. HUGE difference. That is why when Canadian craftsmen go to the states they are very successful is because they are used to fighting for every dollar while in the states it is much easier. Lots of friends have left here for there and are always, still to this day, amazed at the difference between countries. Also remember that taxes are insane in Canada and everything cost way more money.
I know a handful of very successful business people from Canada. But I definitely understand what you are saying. However, I do think you can be successful no matter what country you are from.
@@weldingbusinesssecrets Indeed. As I am. I never said I wasn't. But the facts stand that the states, even as bonkers as it is right now, is a way better place to make money than Can'tada. Take a wild guess how much I pay in taxes for a company! We also pay taxes on taxes which is insane and should be illegal but when you are the Can'tandian gov't you can do whatever you want. We are literally one step away from full fledged socialism. And what happens to socialist countries? Every single one that has ever existed has completely destroyed the livelihood of their citizens. Venezuelan is the perfect example. But there are far too many liberals in this country to have the right to vote. So the liberal disease runs rampant and the country is getting destroyed at an alarming rate. To top off my point there is a mass exodus of business people from here to there. There is a reason for that. Can'tada is dead. I have been in business for about 30 years. As soon as liberals got into power the bottom dropped out of many businesses including mine in many ways. Luckily I had a world wide product that kept me going. When you specialize in one area and all your customer base is built around that and then the gov't destroys that for you then you have to start over. Or leave for greener pasture. And as completely insane as the gov't is in the states it is still better than here. Can you even imagine that?? It is still better. Crazy!!
@@davidpayumo23 I have a corporation here. The government makes it very difficult to do anything here. I pretty much have to close it and start over. Then they want a huge amount as penalty for closing the business. Then when you move outright the Canadian government taxes you again on your net worth. Taking half of everything you have worked so hard to build. The best I can do is start a business down there and still love in Can'tada. This place is on the fast track to Communism and the future looks pretty bleak. Even the ridiculous mess that USA is in at least it is still a capitalist country and they are rewarded for being so.

A welding machine is a money printer! Especially a mobile rig. I welded a bunch in highschool and went to welding school after that. But when i got out of welding school the pipeline crashed and the pipeliners took all the other welding jobs in my area. I ended up going to work with my dad at his framing and drywall company. Ended up getting comfortable there and have been there ever sense. I did purchase a mobile welding rig with the full intention of getting back to welding asap. But it didn’t go that way unfortunately. Im not passionate at all about drywall lol so every day is a drain for me. I hate it. But occasionally the opportunity to weld on a jobsite comes up and i get so into it and i make sure everything is perfect. I have come to realize that welding is what i do best and what im happy doing. I plan on making my own company and achieving my own success. I already have what i need. Its just hard moving away from stable income

@@sigridqwq5198 go out and get some work. People pay good money if you have a mobile rig. I have been cleaning up on tractor bit repairs and fencing. Just gotta get your name out there. I got my first big fencing job, it was a big ass entrance for a long horn rancher. 7” posts and 5 runs of 2 7/8 1/4” wall pipe. Did that shit all my myself and people kept seeing me working driving by and stopping to get my info. Now i keep getting repair calls and stuff. Just gotta get out there and work your ass off then you build a reputation. Repairs are the best for me because im $150 an hr with a 1 hr minimum. So if it takes me 15 minutes im still getting $150. If you really want it then take it serious. I have learned that reputation is everything. I didn’t make that much on that big fence but it has kept paying because of the word of mouth and the rancher wants me on atleast 2 other projects. He actually had a different welder but he got booked up so he gave me a shot and now im his welder for when he needs things. Just keep plugging away and that welder will make you a shit load
Fantastic story for people that don’t know any better. No question that welding is a great trade as that I have a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing and numerous certifications for many different areas of welding. Chances of making it to a million dollar welding business in completely unrealistic. If you want be successful in that industry I would suggest getting all your certifications and college degree in science, engineering is more realistic in this world because only hard work and determination pays off. Great introductory video on the subject!
You must be the type of person that needs certifications and degrees for validation. Most of these guys do not. It would be great if people like yourself. Would stop trying to crush others. Good luck as an employee.

I started welding as a hobby! I tough myself. I learned a lot from family and friends in the business. During my career, I was involved in a head on collision with a drunk driver. I was seriously injured, forcing me to make some life changes...
Thank God, the organization I was employed with was willing to relocate me and give me the welding shop!
The top boss knew I had the skills needed. I can't tell you how happy I am for learning a SKILL!!

congrats on your journey! I enjoyed your story. I started my journey over a year ago. Went to school. Got a job in production making cattle chutes. Then moved into ventilation systems. Learned alot and enjoyed alot. I also have a bit of experience in business so I was hoping to eventually discover something during this journey that I could possibly get into. I currently just lost my ventilation job and currently looking for new opportunities and I am really seeking maybe get into business with welding but since I am a city boy. Its harder to get permit and permission because of the noise cant just work in the yard. So I need to look into getting a small shop for starting or just get a welder and a truck like you. But ideally I'd like to either start to do custom sub contract work to build it up to manufacturing. I think thats where my passion is taking me.

It all depends on what you are wanting to do. There are thousands of machines and so it all comes down to what you do.

I’m on this path right now three years on my own grinding to earn that breakout of what I would consider success. For me it was surrounding myself with people through my talent’s. having a friend that owns a construction company helped me I stepped in and started repairing all their broken stuff with quality and efficiency spread to hey I know a guy that needs this or needs that after countless hours working nights and weekends I was able to make the jump and leave my old job. I also rooted myself in a niche doing heavy equipment repair(there’s very few around that do it and less that do it right) it takes time or just meeting the right person but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m 31 and interested in becoming a welder in OKC. Can’t afford the $7000 for welding school and my high school didn’t offer any sort life skill classes.
Go apply at some local welding shops. There are lots in OKC. Start at the bottom and go in and work hard- at that point they would be happy to train you.

I’m making a jump into welding now at 28. A little background I got out the army and police wants me but idk about going that route so college and welding..seems like good money now and there’s a very high demand here in Houston Tx..I would like to travel weld after a while tho

The thing you did not touch on at all; is the ability to charge the customer, the right amount of money for a project. This to me is the most difficult thing. You can be good in whatever field; welding, driving, construction, baking, photography, auto mechanic, writing, etc,… but it won’t succeed unless you can get paid the right amount. And saying things, like building stuff for your mom, and building things with your brothers, does not explain how you got money for doing those kinds of things. Sounds to me that you were extremely lucky in the beginning, and did indeed get tremendous assistance from others. Still tho, Good job! Keep it going. Because a lot of us got helped a lot too, and still failed.
This was my story on how it all started. It's not a step by step on how I created my business and how to charge customers. I'd say there was luck involved but it was also thousands of hours of hard work, treating people right, being honest, showing up everyday, learning and staying focused that lead my company to what it is today.
I am with you, I got tired of working out of town ,being gone all the time, having my shit stolen while I was out of town, cashed in my 401-k, payed the taxes and penalties started my own business, I had all the tools and skill been welding for almost 30 years, I hit the ground running things was going great, THEN one morning I could not get my breath.... now I am on disability!!!! but I am still a live,,, still pick up a little side work but still don't know how much to charge people I know... thinks for sharing . And I am sorry for rambling just wish I had his good luck
bro i’m 31 years old i work in the bio chem field making 60k i fractured my ankle 2 months ago playing soccer and the money has been so low trying to survive with the little money my medical leave has been paying I believe welding can change me and my family life I live in baltimore maryland the welding school is $4252 should i pay that to become a welder who will eventually own business
If money is tight I would recommend going to work for a welding shop and start at the bottom and eventually work your way up. Just let them know you strongly desire to be a welder and if you have the right attitude and work ethic they will train you for free. In my company we train anyone to weld with the right attitude starting on day one. That’s my two sense. Hope it helps!

I took a cnc course at a local vocational school. We were training right next to the welders . They even had some female welders in the class. I was thinking about signing up for the welding class next for $5000. I am 61 years old

@@tbugofficial It's been a few months since I touched a cnc machine. I have seen jobs where they offer to train you. I suppose I could do it. I used to maintain printers onsite. A printer job is one of the few I can walk onto a site confident and ask for work.

what a nice guy, i've been working as a assistant to this older welder. The guy is miserable. grumpy all the time and won't teach me anything. Fortunatly the owner allow me to pratice with the company tig welder. i practice it during my breaks and lunches, slowly my welds are starting to look decent. in a year or 2 i'm gonna leave and find a company with nicer people to learn from.
It’s always good to work around good people! It’s quite miserable working around nasty people. Life is to short, don’t let that guy ruin your days.
I have just did the same thing a month ago I was laid-off and already had a welding machine but I been welding for 15 years and I have always wanted my own business...So a month ago I took my last 500$ and started my welding company Carolina Welding Kingz LLC and so far have completed one job. Learning to weld changed my life. At 19 years old I started at $15.22 in 2005 as a first year apprentice. I parlayed that job into one with an oil company and now usually do between 150k-160k a year. I know its not millions and I know guys doing more, but for me its a great living. If you're a kid that really doesn't like conventional school and likes working with your hands get out there and learn to weld by any means necessary.

One of the secrets to having a successful business is to live in the states. If you live in Canada it is extremely difficult to do this. HUGE difference. That is why when Canadian craftsmen go to the states they are very successful is because they are used to fighting for every dollar while in the states it is much easier. Lots of friends have left here for there and are always, still to this day, amazed at the difference between countries. Also remember that taxes are insane in Canada and everything cost way more money.
I know a handful of very successful business people from Canada. But I definitely understand what you are saying. However, I do think you can be successful no matter what country you are from.
@@weldingbusinesssecrets Indeed. As I am. I never said I wasn't. But the facts stand that the states, even as bonkers as it is right now, is a way better place to make money than Can'tada. Take a wild guess how much I pay in taxes for a company! We also pay taxes on taxes which is insane and should be illegal but when you are the Can'tandian gov't you can do whatever you want. We are literally one step away from full fledged socialism. And what happens to socialist countries? Every single one that has ever existed has completely destroyed the livelihood of their citizens. Venezuelan is the perfect example. But there are far too many liberals in this country to have the right to vote. So the liberal disease runs rampant and the country is getting destroyed at an alarming rate. To top off my point there is a mass exodus of business people from here to there. There is a reason for that. Can'tada is dead. I have been in business for about 30 years. As soon as liberals got into power the bottom dropped out of many businesses including mine in many ways. Luckily I had a world wide product that kept me going. When you specialize in one area and all your customer base is built around that and then the gov't destroys that for you then you have to start over. Or leave for greener pasture. And as completely insane as the gov't is in the states it is still better than here. Can you even imagine that?? It is still better. Crazy!!

@@davidpayumo23 I have a corporation here. The government makes it very difficult to do anything here. I pretty much have to close it and start over. Then they want a huge amount as penalty for closing the business. Then when you move outright the Canadian government taxes you again on your net worth. Taking half of everything you have worked so hard to build. The best I can do is start a business down there and still love in Can'tada. This place is on the fast track to Communism and the future looks pretty bleak. Even the ridiculous mess that USA is in at least it is still a capitalist country and they are rewarded for being so.
