In Denmark from 1923-1961 there was a home/clinic on an island for "morally defective" girls, that were infamous for how cruelly they treated the girls, which included forced sterilization.
Well, in China nowadays there are many reformation camps that are just as cruel for girls and even boys who "disobey" their parents, be "Internet or phone addict", have "low grades in school", many even starved or beaten to death.
So like they're 100% being sterilized, right? That's what's happening in that shed. Just based on my knowledge of the treatment of Indigenous women and social undesirables throughout history

The actress playing the woman in charge, is she of white european descent ? or is she a very lightskin polynesian ? because it can really change the reading of the movie.
this looks so good! I hope I can watch it in America! Does anyone know what the song at the end is? It doesn't play long enough for my iPhone to recognize it
The movie was shot on Banks Peninsula, but it looks like some location shots of the real Somes Island were used too. Somes Island has a history of quarantine and internment, but I don’t think it was for social undesirables.
women have been bound by misfortune for this issues but it also other women who encouraged them to more than their traditional role. This is because their significant role in society .
It is more that these specific girls were targeted for forcible sterilization. They weren't being trained to be great scientists or businesspeople, they were just being taken out of the gene tool because a bunch of people decided that they weren't wanted.
Inna lillahi wa inna illayhi rajioon The oppression these people wrought on others has yet not been set right. And their moral and economic heirs don’t believe they owe anything to anyone.
Its good then that some men fought to stop this abuse, reduce their rights to give women equal chances and invented modern technology.... you know - so you can sit on your couch in your peaceful country and whine about men all day long.... Also read about female rulers in history. They werent any better and some even worse. Its funny how they are now glorified in mass media and how people naively belive that the world would be a better place under women rule. 😂
instead of cell phones girls just use to lez out.. i will now finsh watching this to see how right i am… ah well they kinda allude to it we’ll see im on to yall 👀
Spoiler in trailer: Water splashing at the end and the girl on the raft/boat holding on to the wooden stick (most likely a raft) as she escapes the island. The matriarch also displays a lot of Narcissism and some scapegoating. She tends to abuse the girls verbally while displacing her own shadow side on to the girls.
Exciting for these young women to get roles to show their talent! The ensemble cast looks wonderful and the visuals. But, In terms of plot and character development It looks like every other Disney movie for youth - repressive society is holding down rebellious and free individuals who must resort to extraordinary means to break down the power of “the man” And once liberation happens, there is Paradise for all except the repressive head mistress who must die Or be confined to an insane asylum. How about a more three-dimensional character for the head mistress? How about the self-destruction that victims of early sexual abuse often find themselves engage in the age of these young women? How do they overcome trauma? With endemic drug problems, mental health crises, and suicide, worldwide, including in New Zealand among the poor and ingineous, I don’t think this plot is really what young people need anymore. If only the girls on the island discovered botany or Zoology or art skills or entrepreneurship to sell things to the mainland or tribal education from a secret text smuggled into the dorms! if they discovered ghosts and spirits on the island, it would be better than just another coming of age story of “liberation by rebellion”
You can’t really gauge the dimensionality of the headmistress fro a 30 second trailer. And, rebellion against repression doesn’t need to result in drug addiction and sexual trauma, though that’s probably something “the Man” would teach. I like your ideas about tribal education and the supernatural, though.
Same old formula- just another film endorsing the heroine of self and "freedom" and denigrating people of faith as villains- and make sure you get the cross in every character-condemning shot. Not enough courage to take on religions that use and mistreat women like property?
So did plenty of other good things. Not every church is evil, not every pakeha is against Māori. As normmaclean says, it’s another film endorsing anti colonisation. Bravo to Rima Te Wiata though. I met her when I did a performance with my high school in Wellington. One of the nicest and most gracious women I’ve ever met.

@@Sara-dw2qe Oh yeah, that's right.

Well, in China nowadays there are many reformation camps that are just as cruel for girls and even boys who "disobey" their parents, be "Internet or phone addict", have "low grades in school", many even starved or beaten to death.
