This is the recording which Charlie Chaplin mentioned in his 1964 book, "My Autobiography."
He wrote: "Often I play her records, the last she made before her death. Before I started the task of rewriting this manuscript for the sixth time, I put on Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with Clara at the piano and Markevitch conducting - which to me is as near an approximation of truth as any great work of art could be and which has been a source of encouragement for me to finish this book."

Beautiful. The perfect performance speaks for itself and I think it is just right the way it is. Evidently Charlie Chaplin had the same feelings about this performance.

As one would expect, this is a finely wrought, unfussy account which really makes the music speak. I suppose it is possible to 'milk' the slow movement for more expression but I loved the eloquent simplicity heard here. Likewise, the finale could be more extrovert but Haskil's understated 'classical' approach also sounds very persuasive. Soloist and conductor seem nicely in accord, and both piano and orchestral sound are excellent.

Min 29:22. Great smiles : Clara dance the rondo better than an 18 years old.

If I had reacted to your comments in 2013, you would possibly have read mine. Who knows if this one will reach you. Perhaps it's not too late. - You mention 4:23 - 5:28 ? To my feelings, any time span would do. So I propose 0:01 - 36:38. This concerto mesmerizes me since I listened to it for the first time, almost 72 years ago. I remember this precisely because a present for my 17th birthday was a small but powerful radio, that transported me from my home in the Netherlands to the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts from London and other great festivals in Belgium and Germany, introducing me to Beethoven (and other composers, of course!). I'm proud to say that Clara Haskil was one of the performers whose piano talked to me personally. :-).

haven't found one who can match Clara in this piece, just so musical with a perfect sense of balance and taste. Gilels is also good, but in certain passages becomes a bit unuanced compared to Clara. Hard to grasp the extent of her genius.

I agree with you! However, even if the music is "classical" itself, I think sometimes a bit more passion and drama are needed, especially in the big cadenza and in the last movement.
