A new favorite! One of the most vivacious, sensitive, deeply felt, emotionally involved performances of this beloved work on record. A brilliant rendition that nevertheless fully realizes the intimate quality and subtle implications of the score. So much finer than the hard-edged expertise and empty bombast of those who merely play loud and fast because they can. Clara Haskil was a musician's musician in the truest sense of the word. What a treasure she was!

Delighted to see you also love Haskil's performance of the Schumann concerto, It has always been my favourite recording - ever since I bought the 10 inch LP in the fifties.

She was described as sad and lonely and I guess it's the price any brillant artist has to pay to become immortal.

Can you imagine that we have finally reached an age, an era, an epoch where this sound doesn't mean anything to anyone anymore.

Your fear is very justified at present time. An AI could do so into some years. Meantime, let's enjoy this marvelous music played by this genial woman and let's enjoy her Mozart.

Haskil was not very satisfied by this recording, but it IS good.
There’s a couple of live recordings around, the one with Carl Schuricht is just exceptional ( listen to the slow movement !)

Cortot not always managed to play the beginning accords of this concerto Clara Haskil has no problems with it. She was better than Cortot with whom she studied in Paris. Her chance was that her family was always behind her. specially her mother.
she had a hard life but made finally a great caréer where she kept her independance completely. She wasnot a person who wants to make compromises or sell her convictions for some advantages. Wikipedia describes well her life full of obstacles.
Fact is that Paris was a very fertile ground to let grow fabulous pianists at that time. Today this is no more the case. As Cortot had to leave Paris after the second world war this left a big emptyness. Although there still did happen a lot in Paris. But Cortot did form so much pianists. Nobody totday does such a good work and the system does not allow this anymore. The french governement does no more give the possibilities to have so much good work done. There was Eliane Richepin formed by Cortot and Yves Nat who did form pianists after the second world war till about 1990 . She did prepare pianists like Roger Muraro and Pascal Gallet and many others and was in close contact with Yvonne Lefebure et Olivier Messiaen.

Rachmaninoff said "When the going gets tough, Cortot goes slower." But he was still one of the greats.

Her chance was that her family was always behind her. specially her mother. .... it´s not true, she was educated by her uncle, not a funny man. The only help she had was her sister (lifelong) and the friendship to Dinu Lipatti.

Outstanding performance! I'm not quite impressed by the sound in this recording. One version I enjoy much is the one here on youtube by Helene Grimaud with Ashkenazy conducting, maybe equally worth.
