    The very 1st HID I used was a 400w metal halide, with a Philips hpi T plus bulb. Which was "borrowed" from a local football park, didn't realise how big those black boxes with the safety caging over the glass were till I had it cut, and in hands,! The weight, awquared size N that weight, also the noise of all the clattering bout,!, Sheesh! Anyhoo eventually got it home with the help of a sulo bin, took to bits then began. Made a reflector from the dimpled metal from inside the lamp, screwed together, got some jack chain and attached a metal "L" shaped bracket to attach the porcelain fitment too. I had to buy several feet of electrical wire, wired the ceramic to the transformer aka ballast, which was just a white magnetic box which I kept attached to the base plate from inside the actual light system, attached more wire to a plug a hey presto, my first HID, free, but quite a bit work involved.
    Used this for about 5-6 years with huge results, then decided to go a bit more pro, TBH I've still got that very light to this day, made by the company "Faeber" if I mind correctly,?? The bulb, Philips hpi T plus MH replacement was £85 back in the late 90,s,. Just for the bulb . lol

    Thank you so much man. You really saved a co worker and I. We wired the whole thing up to 277v, but we couldn’t figure out what cap meant on the wiring diagram. Then we saw the round cylinder said 240 on it, so we left it in the box, assuming it was only used for a 240v application. We flipped the switch and nothing happened, so we quickly turned it off to prevent any damage to the ballast.
    We found your video and as soon as you said the round cylinder was the capacitor, it all made sense. Again, thank you for taking the time to post this.

    Nice presentation! Would you be able to lead me to any information on how to test a Low Pressure Sodium ballast, perhaps taking resistance readings? I maintain 55Watt LPS tunnel fixtures and I'm trying to figure out when it's the capacitor that's bad, and when it's the ballast that's bad. Thanks!

    On this ballast. i have two questions, please if you can tell us, I do not know what it will be the right voltage to hook this fixture up, if I have a reading of 120v and 210v at the building but I would like to hook this to either 208v or 240v and how is the wiring process? Thanks a lot for a very great video.

    I followed your instructions to attach a MH ballast to my hood but I'm running into a weird problem. I connected a plug adapter to my ballast and plugged it into my hood but the bulb would not turn on. I started tinkering and found that when i disconnected the green ground wire that runs from the hood to the screw on the ballast, the light would go on. It's nice that it works now but i'm not keen on leaving the ground disconnected. Any idea why this might have happened?

    how would you wire up a bypass switch to bypass the ignitor to run a MH bulb of the same wattage ???

    • @ThomasOrdon
      @ThomasOrdon 8 лет назад +1

      metal halide and HPS even on the same wattage to the lamp itself the voltage and amperage is different even though there are switchable ballast out there we don't like them because some of them are basically an HPS ballast with a switch that takes the igniter out of play but then still feeds the lamp the wrong voltage and amperage the ones that are designed as HPS metal halide that are double coil has a tap point to change the current and wattage

    hey so i have one of these ballasts got it wired up perfectly.....i plug it in warms up and functions good.....but then the breaker starts rattling obviously the breaker that the light is running on. Also when i unplug it and try to plug back in the light wont come on but the ballast starts you can hear it vibrating and everything.
    So im trying to troubleshoot this to make sure my light doesnt turn off when im gone or something, im gonna try and find a circuit that is less busy to connect to today and see if that helps. At first i thought there was just a bad connection somewhere or the incorrect capacitor was being used i dont believe that is the case though.
    If anyone could provide any input you would be a great help!!!

      +Jacob gallegly everything you have is correct. The bulbs will not start up right after being hot. you would haveto wait for the bulb to cool down for it to start again.

    • @ATSLLCUSA
      @ATSLLCUSA  8 лет назад +1

      if your breaker is shaking or vibrating or whatever I would replace that breaker they're relatively inexpensive and that means that there's something wrong with the breaker itself bad contact inside you're better off being safe than sorry as far as a lamp not firing back up right away the lamp has to cool down from anywhere from 6 minutes to 12 minutes depending on the lamp

    • @superiorlongboards
      @superiorlongboards 8 лет назад +1

      thanks i really appreciate your guys help since i made this post i actually got into an electrical apprenticeship haha. so i have come to an understanding that yes the breaker does need to be replaced and the light just put the breaker over its limits. im thinking about installing a 240 plug and have a designated circuit for these lights.

    I have a question, I hope you can help with. I am trouble shooting an hps light system that died, but was first intermittant, going off, and turning back on for awhile, before it died completely. I noticed you said the capacitor had a 55uf output, easy enough to check. the question is, would the igniter play any role in the light working once it is turned on? Example, after ignition, the igniter could die, and the light would continue working, but of course would not turn on again. Or would the death of the igniter cause the bulb to go off immediately?
    great video btw...

      the cap balances = evens pulling of current ,,,, when thats bad u get flickering,dimming, fluctuation of power .and the . Iginitor does just that. jumps starts. sounds like Cap. is bad .. Good indicator the top will be dome'd or look bulged out! hope that helped . older stuff can be faulty/ dangerous . mabe buy new kit advance is about 85-95$ 400 w and 100$ for 600 worth it . Venture is good too!

      if you have a meter that can measure capacitance what you would do is to be energized the capacitor by using a metal object to short there two poles together preferably something that has a good amount insulation for your hand well necessary and then read the capacitance you don't want to put a charge capacitor on your meter

    You talk about a negative effect when you cross the live wire with the common wire at the lamp holder. What negative effect are you talking about? Fire hazard, or just having a better chance of getting shocked? What if you crossed these wires on an overhead florescent? What negative effect would that have? I've heard none to many. I agree it's bad practice, but some say it makes no difference in some situation. Which is it?

    • @ThomasOrdon
      @ThomasOrdon 8 лет назад +1

      Even though the lamp is AC voltage the height if you look at the center pin does directly into the arc tube and the what would be white wire the surrounding screw part has a metal ride that goes up to the top side of the arc 2 and has Apia in pana so even though there AC ran bulbs there's still a hot in common on the bulb that is a cross the board for all bulbs you never want to hook them up backwards and you look when you screw the bulb in there's a little bit of a metal from the lamp visible if you ever were to touch that and not have good insulated shoes you will be shocked by the 400 watts when its hooked up properly it's not an issue

    • @ThomasOrdon
      @ThomasOrdon 8 лет назад +1

      Typo in the beginning when I use speech to text so maybe a few typos the light does have a positive and negative the center pin that goes directly to the arc tube is the black wire not white wire the white wire is besides screw base which is basically the negative I hope they make sense ask any further questions
