I would sell my teeth to have Nesmith's superb voice.,,,!!!..even though he is clearly much older now it still retains the lovely velvet tones and now sadly he has gone..RIP Nez
This is absolutely one of the most beautiful versions of the song. And I appreciate all the other comments here and agree. But the special beauty of this is that you have the 3 surviving monkeys playing the instruments they played on the original record. If you watch the mike and Mickey show and see someone else playing the harpsichord solo it will really make you cry and miss Pete.
2014 and Nez sounds just like he did in the old days. I always loved his vocals. For a "fake" band, they sure put out some great music. RIP Mike, Peter and Davy. Stay healthy Micky. Monkeemen forever!
I am a R&B guitar player and singer......this is absolutely beautiful!!!!!!....love the harmonies and the bass lead-in to the final verse. The final verse almost brought tears to my eyes ("My fingers are still burning from the last time"...OUCH!!!) as it probably would to anyone who has been hurt by love and can relate to the story that this song tells.......I am working it on my axe even as I write this.......
I love that this isn't massively over produced. You can hear Nez and he sounds great! I would guess Christian had something to do with the vocals and other members of the and backing off a bit to put Mike , Micky and Peters abilities in the forefront. I love that Mike always announciates his words. Most singers don't bother with that. I always thought he was underrated by so many.
I was there, at this concert!!! It was awesome!!! It was the first time in nearly 50 years as a Monkee fan, that I got to see Michael Nesmith "live" in concert!!!
Still amazes me that the Nez tours from 2012-14 even happened in the first place. I saw them all and never took it for granted. The later Mike & Micky shows weren’t as good. Great video you have here!
Its sad Mike is gone now a year ! He was a very talented gifted sweet man ! Always loved Micky ! Peter was sweet gifted talented and Davy had the most talent and was so cute and sweet !
1967: recorded at the last of the Don Kirshner sessions; he decreed Nesmith could not sing on singles because Kirshner thought he was too 'country' and his records wouldn't sell. Mike sang it anyway, but Micky took lead for the 45 version as a result. And, in the pre-electonic days, they used a real harpsichord on the session.
This is a bit closer to what the original line-up SHOULD'VE been, with Peter playing lead. If Davy had been there playing, maybe bass or drums and Micky on either rhythm guitar or drums--depending which combination more comfortable---that would've been IDEAL!
It may be interesting to note that Mike sang the original version in A major, whereas the other version was a bit higher in C major, sung by Mickey. This one is even lower in G major ...
A comment for fellow-guitarists: Kudos to Mike Nesmith: 1. For the beautiful main riff 2. This is the only song I know which is in C major and goes to D# minor in the bridge (or from A major to C minor, if you play it in A). How did he come up with such a fantastic idea? Plus, he goes from there down to Bb major and G# major, which brings him smoothly to G and back to C again ... Incredible.
It's a matter of preference of course. But I like seeing Mickey on the drums which is more authentic to the record and singing a beautiful backup part. On the headquarter sessions you can hear this version so it certainly was recorded with Mike on lead vocals. Great commentary and great to share this appreciation

"Although it was unbeknownst to the record-buying public upon its release, "The Girl I Knew Somewhere" was the first song recorded by the Monkees to contain vocals and instrumentals performed by the band members. It was first recorded on 19 January 1967 with Nesmith on lead vocals; however, a second version was taken on 23 February 1967, with Micky Dolenzreplacing him to create a more commercialized sound. The song became very accessible with its breezy melodic shifts, catchy rhythm, and relatable lyrics."
+George Mortimer -- Peter played harpsichord on the original recording (in fact it was a second recorded version of this song, he accidentaly invented the solo during a rehearsal) on the Headquarters album and I'm sure he is playing this now on keyboards.
+Pani_Dubito Thanks for that, it's perhaps my favourite use of a harpsichord in pop music. I assume they used a real harpsichord in the original (2nd) recording?
+George Mortimer -- I suppose it was a real harpsichord. At least it sounds real and the digital synthesizers as we know them today, imitating sounds of real instruments, were not in use until 1980s. But I might be wrong. I've just found an interesting perspective on Peter's musical input: psychobabble200.blogspot.com/2012/02/ten-memorable-musical-moments-from.html
R.I.P. Mike.
R.I.P. Mike! thanks for the music and memories!
The older they got the better they got - excellent 60s pop
I would sell my teeth to have Nesmith's superb voice.,,,!!!..even though he is clearly much older now it still retains the lovely velvet tones and now sadly he has gone..RIP Nez
Rest in peace my friend. This song got me through so many hard days. Love you

Love seeing Nez smile at the end. Just priceless!

growing up watching the Monkees I can remember a better time. I can't help the tear running down my cheek.
I was there, at this concert!!! It was awesome!!! It was the first time in nearly 50 years as a Monkee fan, that I got to see Michael Nesmith "live" in concert!!!
We really got two for the price of one with this song. I love both versions of the song and listen to either one depending on the mood.
On the version in which Mickey sang, Mike sang the answering phrases in the final verse. ("My fingers are still burning from the last time.")
Still amazes me that the Nez tours from 2012-14 even happened in the first place. I saw them all and never took it for granted. The later Mike & Micky shows weren’t as good. Great video you have here!

This was "THE TOUR" guys look sound and play great...backing band outstanding....
Michael Nesmith does a great job at this song. But despite Michael being the one that wrote the song, I always preferred Micky Dolenz on lead vocals.
Totally agree. Micky's one of the all-time best vocalists in R'n'R.
I agree. I liked the original,Mike's background was great. Love the harpsichord. Excellent song, music, arrangement, lyrics love the Monkees!!
We get to have both ❣️
Mickey is better on that song.Door into summer and sweet young thing are examples of songs Mike Nesmith is better at.wish he didn't his accent.
Didn't lose his accent.he didn't sound Texan
ONE OF MIKE'S BEST SONGS, LONG OVERLOOKED.
1967: recorded at the last of the Don Kirshner sessions; he decreed Nesmith could not sing on singles because Kirshner thought he was too 'country' and his records wouldn't sell. while I'm used to Mickys version of this tune. Nez rocks it!!!
He should, he wrote the song.
They sound so good! Ripike and Peter amd Davey.
Nice video. Great hearing and seeing all 3. Mike is not bad for being, what, 72? He is still my favorite! But love them all. Love you, Mike!
This is a bit closer to what the original line-up SHOULD'VE been, with Peter playing lead. If Davy had been there playing, maybe bass or drums and Micky on either rhythm guitar or drums--depending which combination more comfortable---that would've been IDEAL!
SEMPRE ESCUTO THE MONKEES
Great old song. nice to see the very talented Christian Nesmith and Circe Link doing B/G vocals.
Miss you Nez!
love it mike.
Damn they still sound wonderful!!!!
Thanks for all the good sound and fun times.
Such great close-ups on this one ~ thanks!
Fabulous as always
I Love this guys. Forever!!

Love Christian and Circe!!
A GREAT monkees song written by Mike. Randy Scouse Git a GREAT ONE by Mickey,
Wonderful live performance of this classic song .
I luv this song. Big shot out to Mike & Mickey ❤️💯 Thanks for the great music 🎵🎶❤️
Looks like clips of Davy in the background. Love this version, and I think Mike should have sung lead on the original.

Good Very good
👍❤😀
I wish the person recording would have zoomed in on Peter during the harpsicord solo.
Mike still sounds like 1968.Cool!
Thanks, but the camera work!: Everything BUT Peter during his "harpsichord" solo!
geez..sorry....I did the best I could with dodging heads and all..
wish Mike would wear a hat like Mickey is wearing! ( or a cowboy hat...any hat...just a hat!) Love Mike's singing !
My favorite Monkees song but I will always prefer Micky singing it.
The camera should have been focusing on peter playing the keys during the solo.
Cripes, I didn't recognize Nesmith. I hadn't seen his face since Tropical Campfires, so it was a bit of a shock.
Show
Peter's keyboard solo featured the guy playing the cowbell.
I know it's mike's song but Mickey sang it way better !
It's a matter of preference of course. But I like seeing Mickey on the drums which is more authentic to the record and singing a beautiful backup part. On the headquarter sessions you can hear this version so it certainly was recorded with Mike on lead vocals. Great commentary and great to share this appreciation
is different to have Mike sing this song
Not enough cowbell

+Peter Hogan The audience did give it up for the band at the end. Deaf?
Hogan sit on it love the monkées abut there were no girl in the group
Never give it up, PLEASE🙃
Still I Rise...no he didn't. Micky sang it

You are pretty good at copy and paste from Wikipedia, lol
Why, thank you. I added the quote marks all by myself, though. ;-)
Mike Nesmith doesn't southern.Sounds like a yankee.He sounds different.
nez sounds tired
He's 70 years old and on the last stop of a tour.
Harpsichord? Hmm.
+George Mortimer -- Peter played harpsichord on the original recording (in fact it was a second recorded version of this song, he accidentaly invented the solo during a rehearsal) on the Headquarters album and I'm sure he is playing this now on keyboards.

Performed in a lower key, probably because they can't sing it in the original key.
Roy Martin Mike usually sang in a lower key And he did write the song.
