    Thank you, been fighting a 390fe all day. Haven't got it timed yet. Your video helped me a lot.

    Best descriptive videos . Explaining how, why and why not .

    well done. great points and perfectly explained. just don't trust the marks, things can be off. your combo of removing plug on 1 to confirm cylinder TDC and watching valves to ensure its the compression stroke is the way to go. thanks for taking the time to post.

    You've gotten a good bit of highway and video mileage out of that 289. I can't wait for the 351 build.

    Best way is to pull valve cover and look at number 1 valves--believe me

    I may have missed it, but what did you do with the Mabbco engine you bought a while ago?

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  7 лет назад +1

      I still have it! Just got the cylinder heads for it. I have a feeling it's going to wind up in the rotstang sometime in the summer no doubt.

    good information...I personally use the balancer checking the distributor method....what roller rocker do you have on that almost looked like the ones summit had or has still ?

      @ThunderHead289  7 лет назад +1

      There some very base style comp cams rockets. When she gets overhauled, I'm planning on landing some Scorpions in their place. Those were budget high school pieces

      @thepyrodude 7 лет назад +2

      ThunderHead289 cool comps was going to be my second guess....I've heard good stuff about those scorpions seems like a good choice...are you going to fully rebuild it crank rods pistons cam ect ect.
      Or just freshen it up

      probably just an overhaul on the 289. i did it with iron rings, so i believe that to be the culprit. other than that, good oil pressure and ran good. just replace the bearings, rings, and gaskets. hopefully the cam doesnt show much wear. we will just have to see when i get into it. i have some better heads for it and what not.

      ThunderHead289 old school better heads or new school like some gt40 style heads....I scored a nice set of late 69 or early 70 4v heads for free recently...it pays to look in the trunks of long since abandoned cars...was a good day lol

      +The Dude no doubt! I have a set of parted out 2.02 valve 65 heads Iv worked over a year or so ago. They will be a nice addition. Should keep the compression with the 54cc chambers

    I have a question...let's say the line on my harmonic balancer is too far off because it has slipped from its original position.. Can I use method 1 to find tdc and then make a new mark on the balancer? In other words, once I mark the distributor and line up the rotor with the mark, that should be tdc and I can make a new mark on the balancer? Thanks

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  6 лет назад +1

      I would highly recommend changing the balancer if it slipped for the reason that it may have the rotating assembly out of balance. Search “Thunderhead289 replace harmonic balancer” I have a video walkthrough of this. Would hate for you to damage your engine or even break your crank!

    If you're gonna overhaul it, using a degree wheel and dial caliper will give an exact spot where TDC is, considering there's play in the crank between when cylinder 1 gets right to the top either slightly before or after TDC, which the caliper accounts for, to center the piston right flush with the block deck. Especially important if you're going to do a cam swap and need to match the numbers to the spec sheet that comes with it, unfortunately degree wheels and dials can be outrageously expensive for all that they are.

      I luckily have both for engine builds 👌

    • @MidnightMechanic
      @MidnightMechanic 7 лет назад +2

      Understandably so, since you regularly rebuild engines. Someone just wanting to rebuild their small block at home out of their dependable daily driver might not have one on hand, but that's when renting parts is handy and is cheaper than buying tools outright that only get used once.

      Tool libraries should be more popular, a place where home mechanics can rebuild their dailys using recycled parts and tools would save so much in resources, time, and money!
