Minitrucks have always been special to me. I bought my 2000 S10 brand new and still own it today. 4" drop all around, 17x8 wheels, stereo system etc. I just love it! Hopefully in the future I can drop a 5.3 in it. Funny you mention seeing an Impala SS because I just picked up a 1995 Impala SS. It needs some TLC and paint but it is a solid car and the interior isn't trashed like most out there.
I had an s 10 with zq8 and a Colorado with zq8. Love to get a new Colorado withzq8 and turbo 4 from my Sierra. Think it would be more fun and pretty fuel efficient. For a truck
Howdy LT, all GM calibrations are configured to unlock the converter with a throttle lift or brake circuit sense. It becomes more apparent with higher stall speed converters and a stronger TCC. Also, the weak point in a 4L80-E is the overdrive roller clutch. This component was redesigned for 2001 moving forward with smaller rollers that are now each captive in alignment foots to prevent skewing which is apparently a problem that affected some units although I've never seen it happen personally. The smaller rollers unfortunately don't hold the torque the old larger pre-2001 ones did, so due to that component, having the TCC unlocked during the 3-4 should help it hold up.
I put the bell tech 5978 leafs on right before you bought it! Technically it's supposed to be lowered 6" after your mods, I don't think they lowered the truck 3" in reality. The 5" blocks were also there so I can air the suspension all the way up and have it level with some engines/fab material in the bed vs level at lower air PSI in those air shocks
I can relook at my tune when I get home this evening and tell you which setting it was to keep the converter locked when it shows 0% throttle. It was bothering me locking and unlocking with the cruise set going down the highway so I fixed mine
Under the transmission tab, go to torque converter tab, then apply/release and adjust the minimum throttle release parameters. You will need to fine tune your speed release and apply as well so it doesn't pull the engine down at slower speeds with the tc locked
Glad you factored in the pinion angle. I bought a kit for my truck that said to get max drop you remove the shims under the leaf. the shims had the angle built in. It ruined my rear end in no time.
All 4l80e transmissions unlock the converter on deceleration so the engine can idle. I assume it’s for better fuel economy. It’s hardly noticeable in a heavy duty truck with stock exhaust. But it’s incredibly annoying in a lighter vehicle with exhaust. Also if your running a larger throttle body it’ll get annoying because it doesn’t take as much throttle angle to maintain a certain speed. There is a min tps unlock parameter in hptuners that allows you to set when it’ll unlock based on tps. I use the bluecat transmission tool and it makes setting up shift points and lockup fairly easy.
For the converter to stay locked when you let off the gas you can adjust the minimum throttle release low and high speed tps under trans , TQ converter, apply/release. And for the converter staying locked during the shift you have to have shift lock enabled under TQ converter general tab
i set my triple to lock up in third around 120-130mph in third with tow haul mode. its a setting for the lockup during shifts. transmission tab> torque converter> general > shift lock disable or enable.
This sounds weird coming from a guy to a guy, but dude! Keep the longer hair! It actually makes you look younger. The shorter hair makes you look like an old guy trying to look young. IDK why but it just does. 😂 Keep up the great work! I love your videos.
You kinda crack me up complaining about the firm shifts. You want a fast hard shift otherwise you're just wearing clutches and raising temps. I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work
@@TravisFabel I have three automatic vehicles and two manual vehicles. Got to have a little variety. Oddly I prefer manual transmission in traffic. Especially if it's a sports car.
A 5.3 would be cool in my humble opinion… I can go pound sand though if you’re against that lol. Had a 2003 Tacoma lowered and it was a beast on curvy mountain roads.. love the show!!
Please LT do NOT put the big block in the COPO truck leave that one ls u already have a big block to play with. I did the brake conversion on my 03 Silverado this weekend used 14 Silverado 1500 parts and man what a difference it made in stopping power thanks for the content 2jz on the Toyota or an L33 5.3 there still pretty cheap and easy to get if you want an aluminum LS.
For your converter unlocking issue: Trans>torque converter>apply/release Under minimum throttle release, change high speed TPS Lo and High Speed TPS High both to 0%. Had this same issue on an 04 P59 with 4l80 segment swap. Stays locked on decel when cruising.
Also maybe a small engine awd combo would suit the Tacoma? Sounds fun to have a fantastic 60ft time. Maybe a subaru STI motor and drive train in that. Or maybe a Honda k20 and awd drive train? Two super cool choices. Great channel..
Once the COPO gets the bigger motor, put that 4.8 in there. Upgrade the brakes all the way around because every Tacoma I have driven from generation had horrible brakes. 4 link and coilovers would take a bunch of the roughness out of the ride so yes!
First gen facelift owner here. 2001 year model base with manual trans has PLENTY of brakes, I've moved over to 225/45/17 Lexani tires on Fauxbra SVT wheels and I stop reeaalllyy well. You're only as good as your tires are, not your brakes, but it really helps when your truck weighs like 2600 pounds lol
I could be wrong but I believe the TCC unlock with 0 pedal problem is under Torque Converter/Apply Release/Min Throttle Release. Set TPS fields to 0% and VSS to 256. ...Obligatory try at your own risk.
I would be curious about the lockup under decel as well. Doesn't bother me but always thought it weird as well on my 4l80. Mines a towing application though.
I wanted a 6bt in the taco but the 8.1 is a fair compromise. Build it and do a giveaway? Best thing you could do for your channel. You'll make it to 100k this year buddy!
Have you ever considered mounting the trans cooler under the bed somewhere, maybe behind the rear axle? Then you could put an auxiliary fan on it and not have to worry about routing the lines past any heat sources.
My converter in my 07 Classic does the exact same thing. Its a 4l70 with 3.23 gears and its like the converter is hunting, in high gear it can't decide if it wants to lock or not, its annoying.
The TCC lock up may unlock during DFCO. A throttle pedal module might let you set a minimum throttle percentage so the BCM, TCM, and/or ECM think the throttle still has a bit of "tip-in", as if your foot is holding it just barely above idle. Without it going to full idle, DFCO may not engage, which could be unlocking the TCC.
The 4 link and coilovers would go well with a V8 NA build...we have seen you build with boost, maybe show how much power you can pull without boost? That little bit of extra tire looks great!
You could go 1jz with a turbo (much cheaper than the 2j) if u want to keep it as light as possible u could put a rotary in it. Or go crazy and put the 8.1 in her. Maby with some 3.33 gear to tone down the tq
Rotory isn't light at all man. I've had 2 lt1 swapped rx7 turbo 2s and they were 50 pounds light with that iron block aluminum headed v8 over the rotory drivetrain
Do it in stages try taking the rad cooler out of the loop and retest before you start changing other things like the blower cooler the an lines would be a good idea or some sleeves for the hard lines
Would the Taco have been shipped to a place such as a new work shop since a new work shop would be like free parking until decisions are made on the trucks fate?
Since the lowering blocks were angled to correct pinion angle, wouldn't shortening the blocks change the pinion angle and also change the angle that the block has built in?
I'd put an aluminum block LS (LS3 maybe?) in the Tacoma and keep it NA built for high rpm and swap in a T56 or your choice of 6 speed. Keep the light weight theme going with it and gut it and make it a road course machine.
I've got a premo 98 f-150 lariat 5.4, short wheelbase, step-side, white grey leather that I plan to build but it only has 180K and these are known for lasting 300K++ miles. So not sure I want to do it. I've thought about buying a Toyota truck like yours and building it, so I would be very interested in seeing the little truck built. I knew the weight of the little trucks and know that 400-500 wheel horsepower would make a 2600 lb. scream.
I think a 1JZ or possibly 2JZ would be awesome in the taco, but if you really want a lightweight sport truck you could do a 3S, or even a 2ZZ and turbo it. The 2ZZ revs to about 8200 RPM, it comes factory with forged rods, and it’s an aluminum block, so it should be lighter than just about anything else on the market.
Couldn't the converter lock up parameter be changed in the TPS? Example: Transmission/Torque Converter/ Apply-Release/Minimum Throttle Release (HP Tuners)
Im wondering if the lockup from 3rd to 4th then it unlocks is where the vehicle speed for lockup in 4th is set. Not sure ive never really messed with tuning programs other than TunerPro.
If you keep the Taco, I would either put a LC Engineering Stage V turbo stroked 22RE in it or swap in a old school aluminum Buick 215 V8 with a Olds F85 turbo setup. Keep COPO and Ugly Truck intact.
4g63t swap it. You saw what it did with the Mitsubishi Mighty Max you raced. And they're STUPID easy to get like 800-900hp out of. And ridiculously reliable.

2JZ Tacoma with a six speed would be cool, by the time you put the 2JZ turbo fit and six speed what would the weight be? Maybe an all aluminum 4 cylinder turbo on methanol would be lighter?
I’d encourage you to do a 4BT swap with TKX trans and 3.05 gears. Won’t be the fastest, but it would be a ton of fun to drive and would cruise wonderfully. Should be able to get high 30’s, maybe 40mpg.
4bt and trans that goes with it is 1/4 the weight of the truck. A 6speed Camaro drivetrain could knock down 25 on the highway, weigh less so it handles better, and 2x the power.
I'd build the engine in it and turbo it. I've done a V8 taco. Unless you're drag racing it only they ain't very friendly without dumping tons into the suspension. A V8 takes up all the room under the hood which makes working on it a pita.
My fwd 01 Audi A4 without a sunroof and with me and my subs and amps weighs in at 3280lbs. And it didn't take much to make that a fun car. It would be wild if it was almost 700lbs lighter!
Ok a 8.1 Tacoma would be absolutely insane and I would love to see that and it would be a lot more cost friendly considering the spare 8.1 from ugly truck but I would also really enjoy seeing a 1UZ build that does a little bit of drifting and drag racing.

Definitely do the 4-link and coilovers. The 1UR or 2UR swap would be fun to watch. Everyone does an LS or 5.0 swap. This would be different.
22R would be a sweet build for the Taco, possibly add some boost! Hard to beat a turbo K-swap, if looking for an engine
